Chapter 1: Initiation
8:00am
"Youth of Kanoha and neighboring nations, welcome to your special training regimen."
Within the Hokage's office in Kanohagakure, ten shinobi stood before Lady Tsunade who sat behind her desk, with Kakashi Hatake standing at her side.
None of the youth knew why this special meeting was called.
Lady Tsunade continued to speak.
"So, as you may be aware, all of you have been hand-picked to take part in a… social experiment of sorts," Lady Tsunade says.
"An experiment, you say? Will this be an exercise of one's prowess?" Rock Lee asks, excited at the thought of any sort of physical training.
"I hope not, I'd rather focus on tactics than working up a sweat," Shikamaru responds dryly.
"Shikamaru is correct. This special scenario I'm assigning to you all will test your mental aptitude and put the trust of your allies in your own hands," Lady Tsunade explains. "Kakashi will explain in detail of this directive."
"Very well, listen closely everyone," Kakashi began. "As mentioned, the ten of you have been hand-picked for this mission. These people are:
Rock Lee
Neji Hyūga
Kiba Inuzuka with Akamaru
Shikamaru Nara
Sakura Haruno
Naruto Uzumaki
Gaara
Temari
Hinata Hyūga
and Choji Akimichi."
Kakashi turns to the wall behind him and pulls down a map of the Hidden Lead Village with various key points circled throughout the nation.
"Your mission is simple. There is a set list of tasks that need to be completed around the village. These wide range of menial to challenging duties can range from standard chores like cleaning up refuge, delivering items to designated citizens, to patrolling the borders for potential intruders. Each of you should have received a packet containing a copy of the village map and a list of tasks that are tailored specifically to the induvial. The end-goal is to complete all of your individual tasks before sun-down," Kakashi explains.
"Well that sounds rather simple. With all of us working together, this will be a cinch!" Naruto says optimistically.
"That's right, this will be a piece of cake, right Akamaru?" Kiba responds confidently, with Akamaru giving an acknowledging bark in response.
"Sounds a bit too easy if you ask me, something tells me there's a catch to all of this," Gaara says, suspicious of the seemingly simple mission.
"Very perceptive, Gaara. There is indeed a caveat to this operation," Kakashi responds. "As you are completing your assigned tasks, you all must beware of imposters among you."
The ten shinobi all respond in a range of shock and intrigue at the revelation.
"I-Imposters? What do you mean?" Hinata says with apprehension.
"That's right. Before you all arrived, two individuals within your group have been secretly designated as 'Imposters'. Their goal is to sabotage your tasks and prevent you all from completing your collective efforts. To make things more challenging, these imposters too have tasks, but those tasks are fake, and do not count toward the mission-at-large. This was implemented as a ruse to ensure they are not easily identified by the rest of the non-imposters," Kakashi continues.
The shinobi's mix of concerns and excitement at the complexity of the mission audibly grew at each new revelation.
"Wait, if there are fakers chosen between us, how are they going to stop the rest of us from completing our own jobs?" Temari questions.
"Simple. They will try to take each one of you out one-by-one, either by knocking you out or incapacitating you to the point where you are unable to continue your tasks. In addition, the imposters may invoke a mass-sabotage where if the rest of you do not immediately attempt to fix said sabotage within a set-time limit, you all automatically fail the mission. Remember: if the imposter takes out too many of you, or they succeed in ruining your entire mission through an unresolved sabotage, the imposters will claim victory, and this simulation will end immediately," Kakashi reveals.
"That sounds kind of scary. How are we going to identify the imposters then?" Sakura inquires.
"Good question. If a shinobi has been taken-out and their body is discovered, you must report it to everyone else. I recommend you all gather in a central location and discuss/defend your most-recent actions to prove your innocence. If someone's testimony doesn't add up or they seem too suspicious to let go, or if you actually witnessed the scene of the crime, you may vote to eject them from the mission. If your team correctly identifies an imposter, you will be immediately notified of your successful deduction skills. If you eject an innocent person, however, you will be penalized, ultimately dwindling your numbers that will make finishing tasks much more difficult while the real imposters continue to lurk among you," Kakashi continues.
"So, wait, can't we just call a special meeting or something before an incident happens if we suspect foul play?" Choji asks.
"Yes. Located in the center of the village is a button that will sound an emergency alarm. Use that to gather everyone together to discussion your findings if something doesn't seem right," Kakashi explains.
"That sums up the bulk of the mission details. Are there any more questions before you are sent off on your mission?" Lady Tsunade asks.
All ten shinobi shake their heads in a collective 'no' in response.
"Good. It is 8:15am, you have until 12:00 midnight to complete your tasks before the imposters attempt to take you all out. Good luck," Lady Tsunade tells them all, dismissing them from her office.
As the ten shinobi began to leave the room, they all start darting suspicious and curious glares at one another.
Ten shinobi.
Two imposters.
Who was innocent among them…
