When Adam was still in Essex trick or treating and Halloween were not exactly that diffused.

When he moved to the States he found himself overwhelmed with both the cultural shock and the amount of work expected by all his Nyada's classes.

So it wasn't until his junior's year that Adam actually had enough time on his hand to look around and trying to understand why Halloween was such a big deal.

What he saw didn't really hit any special spot for him. He wasn't interested in finding an excuse to round up friends to party while dressing up and wearing make up.

All in all it didn't seem that different from a theatre group rehearsal. Or maybe growing up in a performing oriented family and pursuing a career in the performing arts had not helped in making the event seem like something special.

Maybe it was also a mix of his relatively older age, and the fact that he had been legally allowed to drink since he was eighteen, made the other part of the not so exciting either.

Considering that at that point in time he was already legally able to buy alcohol on his own. And that after all he was living on a budget, with that came also the appreciation of buying the booze by the bottle and drink at home instead…

If he added to the picture that most of his friends were part of the Apples. And that the few who were not Nyada's students, had super packed class schedule.

All that made joining in the touring of clubs and other similar social activities quite difficult to handle.

Kurt had very fond memories of Halloween, up until the time his mother died.

Burt Hummel had done his best. But for a mechanic with absolutely no idea or understanding the difference between a costume and fashion, Halloween was not exactly the kind of holiday he was equipped to handle.

The fact that there was just the two of them, and they had basically no community to fall back to. Living in a small town, and with Kurt being himself from young age… Well, it left Kurt pretty much on the sidelines of such celebrations.

And in the years growing up while it was just the two of them, Kurt made Halloween just another day. And in reverse, as a shield from all the mean words being thrown his way, he took each and every day as an occasion to wear the most outrageous and outspoken clothes he could conjure up in his mind.

After all fashion knew no boundaries nor gender. And if in doing so he was starting a portfolio hoping that one day it might be his ticket out of town.

Well all the better, after all Kurt was a rather accomplished multitasker…

Moving to New York as soon as he the teachers at McKinley gave the okay that as graduating student, and with his scores there was really nothing he would have missed nor gained staying during the last week before the graduating ceremony had been the best idea Kurt ever had.

Maybe right after accepting Blaine's very public and very humiliating break up during Whitney's week.

Clearly his ex hadn't planned on Kurt to find back his backbone. Not if all the rest of the gleeks' efforts of hinting at Kurt that he should have apologised and fought to get Blaine to forgive him and get him back.

Apparently in the divorce Blaine gained absolutely all of Kurt's friends. It had hurt, but mostly it had pissed Kurt off. It was like the previous year had never happened.

If those were supposed to be his friends, well there was a saying that stated how with such friends one wouldn't want to see their enemies…

So Kurt moved to New York earlier in the summer, and since New York was expensive, he found himself a few afternoon shifts at a local mechanic while taking an internship at … Efficiently spending the summer networking and eliminating basically a semester worth of credit for college all in a single go and even before his freshman year started.

All in all Kurt had kept himself pretty busy and worked really hard to settle into the city.

After a whole summer of blissful silence from people from home he received an unexpected call. Rachel was in New York and felt lonely despite being in the school of her dreams.

It didn't matter that Kurt had humoured her and still auditioned for Nyada, obviously not taking her crazy cool aid into believing the whole let's put all our chances to leave Ohio into a single school that held nationwide auditions only to accept about twenty new students per year per specialisations…

No, if there was one thing Lima Ohio managed to actually hammer home in all the years of mistreatment was the fact that even if for some miracle the odds were in his favour, there was always going to be something that would turn them on him. With that in mind, Kurt had then managed to send out applications to schools all around the nation.

But when the acceptance letters arrived and it had been time to choose his future, he had found himself once more standing alone.

Well not completely alone, Finn had been more or less there, despite the tension between them because of the Finchel engagement.

But when even that fell apart the two brothers had grown closer once more.

So when Rachel, now in New York as well, asked Kurt to meet, Kurt had felt inclined to give the girl one last chance.

Which of course she bombed and burned down at the first opportunity, but something good had come of it.

While Kurt had been at Nyada visiting Rachel during one of his own free periods, she had been lamenting that she felt so alone. She had hinted, with her non existent subtlety, how it would be so good if Kurt tried to transfer to Nyada so they could both have friends. Or alternatively how they could go live together.

But to Kurt, who had managed to find for himself a small place he didn't have to share with anyone else, right in between his well paying mechanic job and his school. The whole idea sounded like the worst thing he could have done.

He still remembered how he had barely tolerated Rachel during school hours. There was no way he'd be able to not commit murder if they were to share the same living place… Plus he and Finn had made plans for his brother to come and visit Kurt. And he had no intention of hurting his brother that way.

So while trying to keep his comments as neutral as possible he suggested that maybe it was time for Rachel to join one of her school's clubs. Kurt found it very difficult to believe that there was absolutely nothing that could intrigue her, or at least her desire to find even more opportunities to perform in front of an audience.

When they walked next to the bulletin board he started listing the clubs he saw and Rachel kept shooting 'em down after barely letting Kurt finish the name.

When he reached The Adam's Apples the reaction he got from Rachel throughly shocked and disgusted him.

In barely few weeks she had turned into one of the mean girls spitting her venom on others for no reason except reputation within the school's wall.

Kurt didn't even know the students in the show choir group, but after hearing, from Rachel of all people, how they were just a group of losers unworthy of her talent.

Kurt simply was done with her, and he was done keeping his tongue in check. So he laid it down on her just what he thought.

How disappointed he was to hear such rash and shallow judgement coming from the girl who had declared show choir her whole and sole reason to breath.

And then as final nail in the coffin of their friendship, Kurt spitefully reminded her that, she might have been willing to pretend otherwise here in this new fancy school of hers.

But he had not forgotten where they both came from, nor who they used to be… Before reminding her that secrets have a way to come up at the most inopportune moments if one insisted on being mean without reason or rhyme.

Needless to say that Rachel turned and stormed away in one of her rather famous moves.

It truly was a pity how the lack of doors to slam, not to mention the all too frequent occurrence in the years Kurt had known her, had lessened the impact of such gesture in Kurt's eyes…

Shaking his head after a moment Kurt simply decided it was time to move on. Not expecting anyone in the desert hallway, hearing someone saying a breathless "Thank you for defending us." had stopped Kurt in his track.

He turned and in front of him there was an older guy, British if Kurt had been correct in guessing the accent… Kurt just smiled and replied with a sincere "It's nothing, I'm sorry she was like that, believe it or not, we were part of the same show choir back in high school, I don't know what made her change this way…"

The blond man in front of him just smiled back and offered a teasing "Oh I do know why, and I'm willing to share that in front of a coffee, what says you?"

Kurt heard the teasing tone and grinned. Having spent months in the city, and having had the chance to work with Isabelle and Chase actually had done wonders for Kurt's self esteem. It had also afforded him an opportunity to understand how to flirt.

Half teasing half serious Kurt answer the invitation with a proposal of his own "Add your name and the most wonderful cheesecake you can think of to share next to that coffee and you'll have a date kind ser."

Adam chuckled and blushes lightly "Sorry it's just you were breathtaking, and I mean I'd love to go out with you and make it a date if you want, it's just you know you don't have to be part of Nyada, we don't really compete but we are a group that just want to have fun together. It would be a pleasure if you'd join us, that's it if you want to…"

Kurt raised an eyebrow surprised and a little bit thrilled of being the reason why this still unnamed handsome man was so flustered. So he offered his hand and said "I'm Kurt by the way."

The blush on the blonde's face deepened a little bit and was still in what appeared breathless awe as he replied softly "Adam, I'm Adam nice to meet you Kurt, and really you have no idea how epic it was to see someone take her down a peg or two. But you were saying something about a date with cheesecake and coffee?"

Kurt grinned secretly pleased to hear the hopeful tone and see the open smile on Adam's face "Indeed we were talking about a date. That is if you're interested in the offer"

As he said so, Kurt smiled and squeezed gently the hand still holding his.

That day had been the first of many more dates together. And as Adam had said from the very beginning Kurt found himself very much welcomed into the Adam's Apple. The group was all that Kurt had hoped to find back when he had been a founding member of the original New Directions. When all he had wanted were some real friends.

When their fist hallowing as a couple came around Kurt had been well ingrained into Isabelle's entourage. That netted him a formal invite to the Annual Vogue Masquerade, of course with a plus one since it was well known in the office that he had a boyfriend.

Despite any of the worries Adam had about not fitting in, as Kurt had been telling him all along, the event was proceeding just fine and all worked out without an itch.

When they were close to the end of the evening Kurt went closer to Adam and whispered in his ear "Trick or treat?"

At which point Adam smiled brightly and said "I suppose trick, as long as it's not you being a trick of my imagination because it is a treat having you in my life every single day."
