Hi! I've been in a bit of a writing slump so I've been watching a lot of Gravity Falls when this fic idea came to me! Anyways I hope you enjoy this first chapter about baking cupcakes ;D
Also fair warning this series/fic will start out really fluffy and sweet but then get dark pretty fast. But the first 4 chapters are good, so yeah. Oh and I cross-posted this on ao3 so check it out there if you want.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything except this idea. All characters belong to Alex Hirsch
Also thank you so much HearOfAKid for beta-ing this story! I've never had a beta before and my story is so much better now because of you!
Now enjoy the fic! :)
Lethal Qupcakes
Baking cupcakes is not how Dipper would usually spend his Saturdays. Yet here he is, baking batch after batch after batch of cupcakes with his twin sister, Mabel. He groans internally, placing yet another muffin tin in the oven.
"Haha! Dipper this one looks like you!"
Dipper turns around and sees Mabel holding up one of the cupcakes she decorated. However, this one isn't sparkly and full of rainbows like her other ones are. No, this cupcake is red and blue and its icing is melting off the top. Dipper can see where Mabel attempted to draw a face, but that too is drooping off the sides.
"Mabel, that looks nothing like me!"
Mabel holds up the cupcake next to Dippers face, her eyes darting from Dipper to the cupcake, Dipper to cupcake, Dipper to cupcake. After a few moments she nods, and lowers the dessert.
"Yup! This one-hundred percent looks like you!"
Dipper groans - out loud this time - and turns back to his batch. The icing on his is much less chaotic than Mabel's; he chose to do a simple blue swirl and top it off with some pink sprinkles. As far as cupcakes go, these ones aren't too bad. They won't win Dipper any awards, but he's still pretty proud of his work. He frowns, now just like a million more cupcakes to go.
"Mabel, why exactly are we baking dozens of cupcakes again?"
"Because they're for the school's bake sale!"
"Since when do you participate in bake sales?" Never has Mabel done any bake sales or talent shows or any of that school fundraising stuff. So why is she doing it now?
"Can't I just want to help out my school?"
Dipper raises an eyebrow at her. Mabel holds his stare for a few seconds before sighing in defeat and giving in.
"Okay, fine, fine. I'm doing it for Henry."
"Who?"
"Henry Valenstein. He's in my math class and he's super cute!"
"Ah, I get it now. You're making me bake all these cupcakes to impress a boy."
Mabel blushes and looks down at her feet. She doesn't need to say anything for Dipper to know the answer, her silence is enough.
"...yes?" Mabel finally says.
"Unbelievable! I was supposed to spend my day geocaching with Dylan and Mark, but I cancelled because you needed my help to bake cupcakes!"
"Dipper please, don't be mad. I just knew I couldn't do this without you! I mean, look at my cupcakes compared to yours!"
Dipper rolls his eyes, she has a point there. Dipper's cupcakes were neat and elegant, while hers were a mess of frosting and sprinkles. Who knew he would be the better baker of the twins?
Dipper smiles to himself as Mabel gives him her best puppy dog face. I guess I'm having a bit of fun, Dipper thinks. Mabel keeps things from getting boring, that's for sure. Dipper could go geocaching some other time, but he can't always bake cupcakes with his other half. Not like this, at least. Dipper smirks and grabs a spoon from the counter, discreetly dipping it in the icing bowl. He sticks his tongue out at Mabel and flings some of the icing at her just as she looks up.
"That's for making me spend an afternoon baking!" Dipper's words come out much harsher than he meant them to and Mabel's shoulders hunch. No, that won't do at all. Dipper flicks another glob at Mabel and it lands right on her nose. "And that's for making me actually enjoy it!"
Mabel laughs this time - a loud, hearty laugh - and Dipper finds himself smiling at the sound. Without a doubt, Mabel's laugh is the best sound in the universe. She catches her breath and looks at Dipper mischievously. His eyes widen as she takes a spoon of her own and flings a giant heap of icing at him. It lands on Dipper's chest, right above his heart.
"Oh, it's so on!" Mabel shouts, laughing hysterically.
Dipper grabs his spoon and starts preparing more ammo. Mabel does the same, and stacks up cupcakes as a shield. Soon icing is flying across the kitchen, splattering the walls, counters, stove and each other. Not a single surface is left untouched. Dipper laughs and realizes there's no other way he would want to spend his afternoon. Geocaching would have been fun, but this is even better. And judging by the smile on Mabel's face, she agrees. She really is Dipper's other half, and he doesn't know what he'd do without her.
Now of course our parents grounded us. When they came home and saw the mess we made, they were furious. They lectured us, and told us how they can't trust us to be home alone anymore and how we had to "clean up this mess or so help me you will never see the light of day again!". Oh, and we never ended up finishing those cupcakes.
"What now? We're stuck in the house and have absolutely nothing to show at the bake sale tomorrow! We've let everyone down!" Mabel cries, slumping to the ground in defeat.
"And by everyone, you mean Henry, right?"
Mabel nods and Dipper rolls his eyes. He pinches the bridge of his nose, already regretting what he's going to say before the words even leave his mouth. "What if we tell mom and dad that the bake sale is a school-related thing. I mean, it technically is."
"But we don't have any good cupcakes! We can't show those monstrosities to Henry!"
Dipper watches as Mabel deflates, the hope he gave her leaving as quick as it came.
"Hm…you have a point there," Dipper scrunches his eyebrows and thinks. There has to be something we can do! Suddenly his eyes widen and he feels as though a lightbulb just flickered above his head. "We can run to the bakery across the street and buy some! We can then add our own sprinkles and whatnot so they don't look too store-bought."
"Oh Dipper! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!" Mabel throws herself forward, wrapping her arms around Dipper. She squeezes tight - how can she be this strong?! - and doesn't loosen her grip until he hugs back. After a few seconds we both stiffen and awkwardly pat each other on the back. Why are sibling hugs always so awkward?
"No problemo sis. You're my other half after all, and I'll always be there for you."
Dipper feels Mabel smile against him, and he knows the words ring true. Sure he could have spent a day hanging out with his other friends, but why would he want to go anywhere when his best friend is right here? Mabel pulls away and looks Dipper in the eye.
"I'd never have it any other way."
Dipper smiles and thinks to himself, "And neither would I."
