Mikan has never had anyone care for her. Whenever she gets hurt the people around her say they don't care, then hurt her more. No one has ever cared for her except for… Chiaki Nanami. They both met during their first day at Hope's Peak Academy. Mikan was very nervous to meet her classmates. "Would they be able to forgive her for existing, and not hurt her?" She has always believed that the reason why people hurt her is that her existence itself is bad, and that she deserves the abuse just because she's her.

During the first month of school she was glad most of her classmates didn't target her. But they were all eccentric and had intimidating personalities. So she found herself spending more and more time around Chiaki. Her calm and laid back personality really made Mikan feel at ease.

They sat together in class, at lunch, and hung out after school also. Chiaki taught Mikan how to play videogames and she loved it. When she played video games with chiaki she felt all the stress and anxiety melt away. Like she can just exist without all of the emotional baggage.

Everything was going good for the two of them until SHE made her grand entrance. Junko Enoshima, The Ultimate Gyaru. While she was very pretty, she was vile towards everyone and anyone. Chiaki watched as Mikan fell in love. A love that she knew would not end well for her.

One month later Mikan Tsumiki and Junko Enoshima were officially a couple.

It took everything in Chiaki to not act and protect Mikan. Wanting to respect Mikan's wish to be with Junko. She watched as Junko used and abused her. Manipulating her emotions, using her abusive past against her, caused her pain. And it came in the form of Mikan knocking on Chiaki's dorm door at least once a week. In tears, absolutely wrecked. Chiaki would try to comfort her the best she could. She tried to convince her to leave Junko every time… but it never worked. Mikan was so devoted to the Fashionista, she still had hearts in her eyes clouding the true picture. Chiaki was so scared she would never leave Junko, no matter how much she abused her. Mikan has had so many people abuse her in the past, she thinks that love and care is not possible for her. Only pain, and for her if it's not pain it's… nothing… loneliness. Abuse is the only type of attention Mikan knows, so that is what she seeks out. It was driving Chiaki mad watching her best friend get hurt over and over again. That was until a saving grace came upon the two of them.

Six months into their relationship, Junko was arrested. She was charged for murder of her own sister, Mukuro Ikusaba. She was locked up for life. This saved Mikan even though she saw it as the opposite. Mikan was devastated, and Chiaki was the one to comfort her about it. She held her when she cried and consoled her when she needed to talk.

One month after Junko was arrested, Mikan was crying in Chiaki's arms. Chiaki held her cheeks in both hands and kissed her for the first time. She told Mikan how she loves her, always has, and always will. Mikan was stunned, Junko had never done anything like that before. And it felt nice. Mikan thought "this type of attention feels better than the type I get with Junko and my parents. It doesn't… hurt. I feel good around Chiaki. Chiaki equals good" Chiaki told her that she doesn't have to have an answer right now, and that she can take more time to process her feelings.
