Chapter One
CalSci
9:30 AM
Charlie was looking through some equations when Larry entered the room with Amita, who was holding several folders to prepare for a meeting. She was nervous, as it was with a new teacher, Max Scheiffer, along with the Dean, and she wanted to be prepared, as Dr. Scheiffer had a reputation of having extremely high standards and she hoped to meet them when she met with him.
"Do not worry, Amita." Larry assured the young woman, "You will do fine in meeting with Dr. Scheiffer, as his reputation as being difficult is blown out of proportion."
Charlie wasn't really paying attention as he was writing down some equations for his upcoming classes as Don hadn't needed his help on a case recently and Don told him he'll let him know when he will.
"Charlie." Amita asked a moment later, tugging on his shoulder, trying to get his attention.
"Yeah, Amita." Charlie said after a few seconds, "Something you need?"
"Not right now, but after my meeting with Scheiffer, I want to go over some notes from the meeting, as we may be working with him on some projects." Amita answered
"I thought Scheiffer wasn't doing any projects while teaching at CalSci for a while." Charlie commented, as the man had just come off a three year project that was said to be draining and took a great deal to get done.
"Not right away." Amita answered, "but his email said that he wanted to discuss any possible projects when his wife comes back from visiting the in-laws, as one of the reasons he can't take on a project right now is because he is taking care of both their daughter and their nephew, as the boy's mom is his wife's sister, and they couldn't bring the kids along and he wanted to have a head start on any lessons and/or projects he may be doing so he can work in a schedule for the kids."
"Oh." Charlie answered, forgetting about Schieffer's family situation at the moment, as his sister-in-law has been living with them after her husband's death.
"It's okay, Charlie, we all forget things at times." Amita said with a smile when there was a knock on the door.
It was Schieffer, and there were two young children with him, presumably his daughter and nephew and the man looked a little concerned.
"Dr. Schieffer, it's nice to meet you." Amita greeted the man with a handshake, "Is this your daughter and nephew?"
"They are, and I was wondering if you guys knew anyone available to take care of Marie and Jack while we are in the meeting." He asked anxiously
"What about the daycare center?" Charlie asked, as he knew a couple students who are parents had their kids there.
"They had to close for the day." Amita said, remembering that those parents talked about having family members taking care of their kids because the people in charge of the center had to leave for the day on short notice due to their own family matters and no one else was available to look after the kids.
"How about us?" Charlie suddenly said, "I mean the meeting won't be long and me and Larry don't have classes for the rest of the day and the kids would be fine with us, right Larry?"
"Of course, Charles, as I only have papers to grade and I could do that while watching your young wormholes." Larry said, getting amused glances from everyone else in the room with the last part.
"I don't have any other options at the moment, so that works for me." Schieffer said in relief.
"Thanks Charlie." Amita said with a smile, proud of her friend and teacher for stepping up to the plate.
"No problem, guys." Charlie said with his face reddening in embarrassment and flattery.
"The meeting should take a couple hours, so we can see you guys again around lunchtime and what we can do from there." Amita said as she and Schieffer left the room.
"Thanks." Charlie said as he and Larry looked at the kids, wondering what to do next.
'Baby sitting, how hard can it be?' Charlie thought, as it can't be that hard to take care of young kids, though neither he nor Larry had any idea on how difficult it can get.
