This is in the same AU as the Doctor Who coffee shop AU I wrote for last year's Writer's Month which you can read in the story 'Writer's Month 2020 - Doctor Who' chapter 2 via my profile.

"So I told Venyamin," said the Doctor, half empty travel mug hanging from her fingers as her free hand waved in the air as she talked, "that shooting the polar bear was just cruel. The poor thing was just hungry."

Yaz turned from the coffee machines and slid the mug across the counter to the waiting customer. She smiled at his thanks as the Doctor continued to talk.

"And Polina, oh Polina. Now she was one fearless woman. When that polar bear charged she stood her ground and let out a most almighty roar. You would not believe that noise she made! For such a small woman she has a hell of a set of lungs on her! Frightened the poor polar bear stiff, he did a sliding stop on the ice and everything! Stared at her confused for a second then he ran off!"

The Doctor paused as Yaz greeted the next customer and took their order, only resuming her recollections when she started getting the machines to expel their delicious beverage.

"Ah, Yaz. I wish you could meet her, I think the two of you would get along like a house on fire!"

"I'd wish I'd been there and seen it," replied Yaz over her shoulder. "I've never even seen a polar bear in real life, only on TV. There's some in a wildlife park not too far away that I've always wanted to visit but I've never got round to visiting. Seeing one in the wild must be amazing, even if it is trying to attack you."

"They're scaredy cats really," said the Doctor after Yaz had served the last customer then settled opposite her with a hip against the counter. "It was just defending the only food source it could find. Desperation can make both people and animals do things they wouldn't usually do."

"But you saved the polar bear, right? Didn't have to shoot it?"

"Called in a few favours and he was relocated a few hours north where there was more food. So he still should be living a happy life out there, far away from the town rubbish dumps." She took a sip of her forgotten coffee and winced finding it cold. She shrugged and downed the lot before Yaz could offer a refill. "You really should see those polar bears if you want to, Yaz. Life is short and you need to take what you want from it before you can't."

"One day I will," sighed Yaz. "It's just finding the time to organise it, there always seems to be something else that needs to be done. And I've found places like that aren't as fun on your own, you know? I've always liked having company. Ryan would come with me but we can't both leave the shop, we're too short staffed."

"I could come with you," said the Doctor. She motioned over her shoulder with her thumb at the blue camper van parked outside. "The old girl always has a seat spare if you want it. Just let me know when you have a free day."

Yaz looked down, heart starting to race at the thought of spending the day alone with her favourite enigmatic customer.

"I've got next Tuesday free, if that's ok?" The Doctor suddenly beamed.

"Great, it's a date!"

Yaz reached for a cleaning cloth to wipe down the already spotless counter top, blushing lightly.

"I'd like that."
