A/N: Please note that this is my interpretation of the battle from the 1986 Transformers movie in a series that is still in the making.
Changes in this version:
- Those who died in the movie survived.
- Megatron has already been reformatted into Galvatron but is still called Megatron.
- The Decepticons turned against their leader with a few exceptions i.e. Starscream and Shockwave.
- This version takes place in 1986 unlike the movie which is depicted in 2005.
- Spike can turn into a Transformer which will be explained in my Transformers Ultimate storyline when I get round to it.
- Cyclonus and Scourge were created by Galvatron as seperate entities, not from the remains of Skywarp, Thundercracker, and the Insecticons.
I only own my OC's.
Enjoy.
Prelude - Attack on the Shuttle
"Such heroic nonsense!" - Megatron to Ironhide.
Following their victory at the Space Bridge Nexus, the Destructicons had succeeded in driving the Autobot army off of Cybertron entirely, even rooting out Elita One's underground female Autobot resistance group and others like them. However, the Autobots and Decepticons retained staging grounds on Cybertron's two moons and were in the final phase of preparations for their counterassault. All that remained was the transport of a final shipment of Energon cubes from Autobot City's production facilities.
Optimus Prime dispatched a shuttle to Earth for this purpose, interestingly crewed by most of his command staff including Ironhide, Prowl and Ratchet with Brawn tagging along to help with the heavy lifting.
Unfortunately for the Autobots and Decepticons, Leadsweep, casetticon of the Destructicon's communications and intelligence officer, Pyrowave, got wind of the Bots and Cons' plans and warned Megatron, ruler of the Destructicons about it and left no doubt as to his next course of action. In a move reminiscent of the Decepticons' boarding of the Ark before their initial arrival on Earth so many years ago, Megatron led a sizeable contingent of Destructicons against the small Autobot crew on the shuttle who were distracted by an oncoming meteor storm.
Despite being heavily outnumbered and outmatched, the Autobots put up a fierce resistance before they were overwhelmed. Brawn was the first to fall, wounded by a blast from one of Starscream's null rays. Prowl was next to follow after being shot by the Terrorcon Blot. Ratchet and Ironhide then also fell to Cylconus and Scourge's marksmanship respectively, though Ironhide clung onto what strength he had left just long enough to be sent into stasis lock after avoiding a blast from Megatron's fusion cannon.
Having taken control of the shuttle, Megatron's plan became clear: the shuttle was to be used as a "Trojan Horse", conveying the Destructicons for a surprise attack on Autobot City itself. Given how somewhat easy it had been to storm and take control of the ship, Megatron seemed to think that his plan would easily surprise and vanquish the Autobots and Decepticons forever in one swift, decisive stroke.
On the other hand, Megatron, despite being a combat veteran from his days in the gladiatorial pits of Kaon, was never really known for his tactical genius, something Starscream was, and had been, quick to point out time and time again.
The Battle Begins - Battle of Autobot City - First Phase
"Springer, Arcee, Tracks, Grapple, transform Autobot City!" - Ultra Magnus giving orders.
Megatron had calculated correctly in the fact that the Autobot shuttle would not set off Autobot City's automated defence system, even if it was carrying a Decepticon crew. It was sheer chance, and sheer luck, that the Autobot's human ally, Spike Witwicky, noticed there was a hole in the shuttle and alerted the young Autobot, Hot Rod, both of whom investigated further and quickly learned the dire truth of the situation.
Spike and Hot Rod both opened fire on the shuttle, damaging it to the point that it nearly exploded and nearly went into an uncontrolled crash had Prowl and Ratchet not regained control after repairing themselves to a functional state. The actions of the former pair also alerted allowed other nearby Autobots and Decepticons, including Kup, Hound, Huffer, Bluestreak, Sideswipe, Blitzwing, Ramjet, Nacelle, Triggerhappy, and Hotlink to realize something was wrong.
With what he thought to be the shuttle's destruction imminent and the Destructicons' cover blown, Megatron ordered his troops to disembark and begin the attack on the city immediately. A number of Destructicons transformed to alternate mode and immediately began to commence attacks on Autobot City and attempted to pick off the Autobots and Decepticons caught outside.
The Autobots and Decepticons, though surprised and outnumbered, quickly rallied to the defense. Ultra Magnus and Soundwave, commanding the City, ordered Blaster to contact Optimus Prime and Skywarp on Moonbase One and Jason at the Ark to obtain reinforcements, Springer, Arcee, Tracks, and Grapple to transform Autobot City into its battle mode, and Blurr, Runabout, and Runamuck to assist in alerting the other Autobots and Decepticons to the attack.
Springer, Arcee, Tracks and Grapple, however, delayed transforming the city for as long as possible to try and allow Spike, Hot Rod and Kup to get back inside. Eventually running out of time, they began the transformation, offering the city (and its Autobot and Decepticon defenders) greater defensive capability to meet the Destructicon assault. One of the main parts of the transformation also had the added bonus of causing Starscream to shoot and effectively maim his right ped to avoid being crushed.
Kup, Spike, and Hot Rod, the latter pair meeting the former after they avoided the Terrorcons, Rippersnapper and Cutthroat, and he saved them from Motorjump and Shockjaw before narrowly avoiding Starscream and Cyclonus's attempts to shoot the road out from under them, speeding towards the city, saw that the two Insecticons Fragment and Throwback were eating through one of the main doors, but Throwback was taken across the chasm by the retracting bridge with both nearly dropping into the stream below the entrance.
Using the Insecticon as a springboard, Spike, Hot Rod and Kup were able to clear the gap and enter the city (crushing the horns on Throwback's head and ramming Fragment out of the way in the process) moments before the armored doors closed. On the downside, Hot Rod would be briefly reprimanded by Ultra Magnus for his recklessness, which most likely contributed to him wanting to aid Optimus and Jason against Megatron later in the battle in an attempt to prove himself.
Meanwhile, Blaster did manage to make brief contact with the Autobots and Decepticons stationed a the Ark and on Cybertron's moons, but the signal was cut off thanks to the intervention of Pyrowave and the four henchmen he had with him: Rough, Tumble, Volley and Dagger. However, Blaster quickly evened up the odds by putting his own quartet of counterparts into the fight: Ramhorn, Steeljaw, Rewind, and Eject.
Though unable to penetrate Autobot City's defences by conventional means, the Destructicons succeeded in taking down the Autobot and Decepticon soldiers, such as Wheeljack, Windcharger, Runabout, and Runamuck. Realizing that a full frontal assault was futile, Megatron ordered the Terrorcons to merge into the gestalt Abominus. The giant robot quickly made his presence felt, easily penetrating the first line of defences by literally tearing them open.
Even one shattering attempt by Springer, Kup, Spike, Hot Rod, and Arcee was unable to put him out of action. But even so, the two sides were so evenly matched that the battle continued over the course of the remainder of that day and throughout the night with apparently neither side gaining any significant ground until, bit by bit, the Destructicons slowly but surely began to push the Autobots and Decepticons back.
Turn of the Tide - Battle of Autobot City - Second Phase
"One shall stand, one shall fall." Optimus Prime on confronting Megatron.
Despite the spirited resistance, however, the city could not hold out forever; by the next morning the Autobot and Decepticon defences had been broken by relentlessly continued Destructicon assaults, and the likelihood of a mass slaughter was extremely high. It was at this crucial point that Autobot and Decepticon reinforcements commanded by Optimus Prime, Jason Marshall, and Skywarp arrived.
The Dinobots were deployed by Optimus to attack Abominus, with some success, but it would eventually take the combined efforts of both the Aerialbots and Combaticons combining into Superion and Bruticus and working together to put a stop him to give the Autobots and Decepticons a breathing space along with the chance for them to regroup. By that time, reinforcements had arrived in the form of Skyfire, Tex, Elita-One, her team, the Fighting Femmes, the Stunticons, Dinobots Squad II, and the Aquabots.
Although they too made a valiant effort, shooting down and crippling many of Megatron's soldiers, including Mechawing, Zodiac, Barrage, and the Seacons, even they could not halt the Destructicons' relentless advance into Autobot City. In the end that task fell to Optimus Prime and Jason, who, supported by those with them, both made heroic solo frontal assaults against the massed firepower of some of the most elite members of the Destructicon army.
In tractor-trailer mode, Optimus mowed down Cyclonus and Fragment and nearly did the same to one of Scourge's Sweeps who flew out of the way just in time, before transforming to robot mode and using his ion blaster to single handedly blast the Destructicons Pummel, Turbine, Dropraider, Throwback, and Pillage before it was knocked out of his hands by the Sweep he had attempted to run over on his initial charge.
Meanwhile, Jason, also in robot mode, alongside Skywarp, rallied the others and launched a counter attack, with the human turned transformer leading the way. Like Optimus, he too squared off against and beat some of Megatron's more elite soldiers, including Scourge, who tried to offline Firestar, and got his left optic smashed for it, Octane, Motorjump, and Cannonside.
Both he and Optimus made their intentions clear as they fought their way to engage the Destructicon leader in what they both assumed, as they often did, would be their final battle with the tyrant. While that was happening, Mirage stealthily blasted Backtrap before getting shot at by Megatron but was rescued and carried away by Motormaster while Ultra Magnus, Tracks, Sideswipe, Red Alert, Thrust, and Dirge finally brought down Abominus with a missile barrage.
In retaliation, the Terrorcons subsequently wounded Red Alert heavily as the sextet retreated but they were luckily provided cover by Ramjet, Bombshock, Shrapnel, and Kickback, saving the Autobot security chief as the others carried him away to safety. Before the battle between the two main leaders began, several Destructicons, mainly the ones he had fought on his initial charge, dogpiled Optimus Prime only for him to trounce them all single handedly.
The clash was brief and intense, with both of the two leaders pulling out every move and trick in the book they knew and had learned over the course of the First Earth War to try and beat the other but in the end it resulted in what appeared to be a seemingly flawless victory for Prime. Following his and Jason's example, all the other Autobots and Decepticons immediately increased their efforts against their attackers.
After retrieving his ion blaster, which had been knocked out of his hands by the Sweep he had attempted to run over earlier, Optimus prepared to finish off the Destructicon leader once and for all. But Megatron had spotted a gun hidden merely a matter of yards away from him. Stalling for time with false pleas for mercy, Megatron crawled towards the gun while Optimus pointed out the irony of his former brother in arms, who was "without mercy," and was now pleading for it.
Before Optimus could take his shot, however, Hot Rod, in a brave, yet rash, attempt to help, intervened as the Destructicon warlord grabbed the gun, trying to, at best, hamper the tyrannical leader. But his efforts backfired, as Megatron easily overpowered the young Autobot, and used him as a shield which prevented Optimus from shooting him without also harming his hostage. Fortunately, Jason intervened by blindsiding Megatron at the last minute before he could shoot Optimus, tossing Hot Rod into the clear.
Rouge Leo then, after ordering Hot Rod to "get out of here if you value your spark", before he briefly went one-on-one with Megatron and successfully scored a deep wound on his enemy's left shoulder with his energy blade. Stepping back, he allowed Optimus the chance to finish off his longtime nemesis. It was then that Nightbird, who had remained out of sight until that time, mainly making sniper shots, shot the Autobot leader in the abdomen, causing him to lose his ion blaster and, in doing so, save Megatron's life.
After thanking her, the Destructicon leader prepared to finish what he had started and aimed his fusion cannon at Optimus. Prime, however, managed to gather all of his remaining strength to deal a haymaker powerful enough to knock Megatron off a ledge and into a fall that would prove almost-lethal before collapsing from both his injury sustained from Nightbird's rifle and the exhaustion of the battle with the Destructicon warlord.
Seeing their leader conclusively defeated in this way nearly broke the Destructicons spirit. That was, until, Starscream, taking interim command, ordered them to cover their retreat while ordering Octane to transform and prepare to ferry the injured Destructicons away in a general retreat while those who could still fight were to cover the evacuation by those who, while wounded, could still move at a decent speed were to help the more heavily wounded on board. The Autobots and Decepticons were quick to do the same.
While some of them escorted the wounded into the inner part of the city where they would be safe. Jason, Elita One, Skywarp, Thundercracker, Soundwave, and Tex led a final, last ditch, all out assault to drive their enemy away. After a brief blaster fire exchange, the three sides once more dived into close quarters combat like before, only this time, the Autobots and Decepticons fought more fiercely than before, enraged at the sight of their wounded comrades and leader.
Elita One in particular showed this resentment by going one-on-one with Nightbird in retaliation for what the Ninjabot had done to her sparkmate and hammered the Destructicon femme without mercy until the latter used her flashbang power to escape to Octane, albeit with heavy injury. Chromia, Greenlight, Lancer, Virtue, Stromaya, Jazz, and Inferno, also greatly incensed, Chromia, Stromaya, Jazz and Inferno by the damage done to their sparkmates, Ironhide, Mirage, Prowl, and Red Alert, tore into the Destructicon ranks.
Unlike what he would have done previously, Starscream, surprisingly, was clearly not going to leave Megatron to die of his injuries, and personally carried him to and onboard Octane before returning to lead the defence while the evacuation was carried out. Gathering up the rest of their wounded, the Destructicons made a fierce effort to keep the Autobots back before, at last, they all boarded the triple changer and finally fled the smoking city to their earth base at New Kaon to regroup and recover.
They were pursued a short distance by Tex, Powerglide, and the Aerialbots to make sure, leaving the Autobots and Decepticons to similarly gather up their own casualties and tend to their wounded and those in need of care. However, not all the Destructicons had been evacuated. As Grapple, Hoist, the Constructicons, Slag, Snarl, Warpath, Blitzwing, and Perceptor were sifting through the wreckage in an early salvage attempt, they made a startling discovery.
Underneath a wall panel which had fallen during the ferocious firefight between Superion, Bruticus and Abominus, was an unconscious Cyclonus who had been knocked into stasis lock by the force of the impact he had sustained. Needless to say, it was an opportunity that was certainly not going to be passed up by the two sides. While they knew that Cyclonus wouldn't give them any vital information, they knew that he would prove to be a high value prisoner.
After the storm - Battle of Autobot City - Aftermath
"This attack is merely the beginning of a new war here on Earth." Jason to the Autbots and Decepticons.
Large numbers of Autobots, Decepticons, and Destructicons had been heavily wounded as a result of the battle. Windcharger, Wheeljack, Huffer, Beachcomber, Thrust, and the Insecticons were merely the tip of the iceberg among a sea of casualties, and even the mighty Optimus Prime had sustained major damage from his fight with Megatron and the surprise attack from Nightbird.
Being unable to lead the Autobots in his current state, he chose, without much surprise, mainly from Jason, Skywarp, Soundwave, Thundecracker and Ultra Magnus, Elita One as his temporary successor while he recovered from the battle. Hot Rod felt deeply responsible for what had happend to Optimus and got an audio receptorful from Jason, berating him for his recklessness and telling him, in no uncertain terms that the next time he went toe-to-toe with the Destructicons he would not "come out alive".
Despite coming at a heavy cost, the Battle of Autobot City was a definitive victory for the Autobots and Decepticons, with particular praise going to Grimlock, Silverbolt, Onslaught and their teams for tackling and defeating the Terrorcons, Motormaster for saving Mirage, a point which he was quick to commend the Stunticon leader for, and Ramjet and the Insecticons were also credited for helping to save Red Alert and the rest of Ultra Magnus's combat team.
Ironhide, Ratchet, Prowl, and Brawn, also received high praise, the former pair for fighting on against the odds despite being outnumberd and outgunned, and the latter pair for landing the shuttle despite being heavily wounded by the attack it had suffered after leaving Moon Base One. The Second Earth War would be the next major battle in the War of the Transformers, its events spinning directly out of the Battle of Autobot City.
By 1987 Autobot City had been fully repaired and had more armour and defensive capabilities than before. Also by that time, the Earth bound Autobots and Decepticons would have recieved reinforcements for both sides in the form of the Wreckers and Sky Lynx for one faction, and and the Decepticon Heavy Brigade for the other, who came to Earth following Elita One and Soundwave's message for any and all available Autobots and Decepticons to come to the planet to help in the new war and eventual overthrow of Megatron, the Destructicons, and the end of the Great War entirely.
