The Doctor had just dropped Amy and Rory off for their honeymoon. He had promised to leave them alone for the whole thing, knowing they would probably never see him again if he did! Even River said she was busy! True never knowing where they were on the timeline didn't exactly help either.

"Oh bother!" The Doctor whispered to himself, trying to think of where to go next.

The TARDIS then started to chime. The Doctor stepped back from the console as it continued to do so. He had no idea why it was doing this, River might have meddled with it when he wasn't watching.

"Doctor? Doctor, can you hear me?" A voice started talking out of the console.

The Doctor put his hands on his hips searching the console to see where it came from. The console then moved, sending the Doctor flying. He held on for dear life just hoping the TARDIS would come to a stop soon.

The nurse poured out another glass of whiskey next to the one she had already poured. The brigadier barely lifted his head as she did this. She just hoped he still had some hope left that someone would drink this but it was slowly drifting away.

"Will there be anything else Brigadier?" The nurse asked, looking towards the half asleep Brigadier.

"Not at the moment." The Brigadier sighed deeply.

"He'll come along one day. I'm sure he won't let you down." The nurse tried to keep his spirits light.

"He's done it before." The Brigadier responded.

The nurse nodded in some agreement and then left the Brigadier to himself. The brigadier looked over to the two glasses. He sighed heavily. He wanted to believe the nurse was right but it was very highly unlikely the man would ever turn up! A knock came at the door of his room. He smiled brightly as Kate appeared.

"Hey dad." Kate beamed sitting down.

"Hi sweetie." The Brigadier gave a small smile back.

"Is this for me? You never give me whiskey." Kate spotted the whiskey set out.

"It doesn't matter. How's UNIT going? They're not treating you too badly are they?" The Brigadier sounded somewhat threatening.

"I'm a scientist. I don't think they're ever going to take me seriously."

"Well report them to me if they are mean to you. I still have some power, you know."

"Yes dad. Haven't heard from you know who for a while but I'll take that as a good thing for now." Kate mentioned knowing her dad will want to know.

"I wasn't expecting you to. You can go for years not hearing anything and then out of the blue something comes along." The Brigadier shrugged, smiling more.

A whining outside then caught Kate's attention. The Brigadier noticed her sudden change.

"Kate, what is it?"

"I'm just going to check something. Wait here." Kate patted the armchair heading outside.

"Like I could go anywhere else." The Brigadier sighed waiting for her return.

Kate nodded.

The TARDIS finally landed. The Doctor moaned as he got off the floor, wiping his hair out of his face. Nothing broken at least!

"Where have you taken me this time?" The Doctor whispered in frustration.

There was then a knock at the door. The Doctor didn't move. Maybe the person or whatever on the other side would go away. It didn't. The knock came again.

"Come in!" The doctor called.

The door creaked open. He really wished he had put some oil on it before his next adventure. Kate slowly came in the door.

"Kate!" The Doctor smiled, opening his arms wide.

"I knew it was you! I mean you've got to fix that whining otherwise anyone could see you." Kate moaned.

"Well I would if I knew how." The Doctor shrugged.

"What are you doing here anyway?" Kate finally got around to asking.

"It's not my fault. The TARDIS brought me here and now I'm here, I don't know what to do. Where am I anyway?" The Doctor asked after beating around the question for ages.

Kate looked back at the door and then at the Doctor. The Doctor was very confused as to why she didn't answer but knew it wouldn't be long before he did receive one.

"Come with me." Kate held out her hand.

"Curiouser and curiouser. How do I know I should trust you?" The Doctor continued to ask.

"Just come with me or I'll get a UNIT team round here to arrest you instead."

The Doctor didn't have a comeback for that. He didn't want to get in trouble with UNIT again. He grasped Kate's hand and followed her.

The Doctor was still very confused as Kate made her way back into the care home. The Doctor let Kate do the talking as they made their way through, it was probably the best idea.

"Where are we going?" The Doctor finally whispered as they seemed to walk forever.

"We're going to see someone who wants to see you but you haven't seen him in years!" Kate exclaimed quietly.

"That could be literally anyone in my life! Well they'd have to be male but that is still a very large number!" The Doctor fought back.

Kate stopped where she was for one second. She shook her head at the doctor and then carried on. If she took everything the Doctor said seriously, then she would go mad.

"You're going to ignore me now aren't you?" The Doctor joked.

Kate ignored him. The Doctor wanted to say more but decided not to make her more angry then she already was. They then came to a stop outside a room. Kate tentatively knocked on the door.

"Yes." A small voice answered.

Kate pushed the Doctor in front of her. He looked at her and then opened the door, not aware of who was on the other side.

The Doctor stopped as soon as he came through the door. He soon recognised who was in the chair. Kate closed the door quietly behind her. The Brigadier looked up at the Doctor.

"Was that your car that made all those sounds? Sounds like you need a new mechanic." The Brigadier pointed out of the window.

"Yes. Kate has gone to get me one." The Doctor lied.

"You know Kate?"

"Somewhat. I've seen her around a few times."

"Well sit down then man!" The Brigadier could see how awkward the Doctor was being.

The Doctor quickly went to the chair. He didn't usually listen to the Brigadier.

"This anyone's?" The Doctor nodded at the whiskey.

"I'm always saving it for someone but I doubt he's turning up so go ahead." The Brigadier waved his hand.

"Thanks. Who's this person then?" The Doctor began to drink the whiskey.

"A man I used to work with. Said he would be back in five minutes and then disappears for twenty years." The Brigadier scoffed.

The Doctor spluttered on his drink. He knew it had been a while.

"I always keep one out though, you know just in case he does come back. Kate sometimes works with him too but she has the same problem apparently." The Brigadier chuckled thinking back to their conversations.

"Was this man nice?"

"Depends. Some days he was. Most days he was just annoying and bothered me in everything I did. UNIT was a mess most days because of him."

"Sounds like an annoying person."

"Had a heart of gold. Not only that he shone gold as well."

"I'm sorry?"

"He shone and then managed to change face and almost personality. It was like knowing four different people. That's how many times I saw him over the years." The Brigadier continued to spill.

The Doctor then put his drink down on the table. His hand began to twitch, he managed to cover it up but the Brigadier soon noticed.

"You alright?" The Brigadier sounded worried.

"It's nothing. Just reminding me of something, that's all." The Doctor mumbled.

"I never should have told you all of that. I guess I had to tell someone though because I would have gone mad."

The Doctor had to do something. He couldn't leave the Brigadier without telling who he actually was. He then stuck his arm out and tried to make it shine. It then shone. The Brigadier stared at it.

"Hello mate." The Doctor said after a while.

"No! It can't be!" The Brigadier shook his head and then faced the Doctor.

"Doctor?" The Brigadier sounded exhausted.

Kate heard whining coming from outside and then rushed into the room. Her father was smiling and the whiskey was gone.

"Dad? Where did he go, the man I helped to get in here I mean?" Kate continued to lie just in case.

"Yeah right. You think I wouldn't recognize the Doctor when I see him?!" The Brigadier scoffed.

"I told you he'd be back." Kate folded her arms but smiled at the same time.

"Lucky I kept some whiskey for him then." The Brigadier looked over at the empty glass.

The Brigadier had never really given up hope that the Doctor would return and was glad to see his trust wasn't misplaced for once!
