The Pixies Guardian: Learning to Fly

Kagome was flying through the woods when she heard what sounded like a puppy whimpering. Heartbroken at the sound she flew towards it as fast as her little wings could carry her. When she came to the side of the cliff she peered over the edge in confusion. Had the poor helpless creature fallen to the bottom? Determined to find out she followed the sad sound over the edge. She gasped in shock at the sight that greeted her. Inside a tiny crack along the hillside was an injured inu hanyo pup.

He looked to be no more than five summers old in human years and was covered in dirt. He had the most adorable little puppy ears on the top of his head and terribly tangled silver hair that reached just past his shoulders. He was wearing a matching red suikan and sashinuki hakamas and had little scrapes and cuts covering his hands and feet. He was huddled up against the back wall with his arms wrapped around his legs and his face pressed against his knees. It was a pitiful sight and it brought tears to her eyes.

"Oh honey… what happened?" Kagome soothed as she cautiously flew into the tight space.

"Who are you?!" gasped the little hanyo pup. He trembled with fear and pressed as far back against the cold stone wall as he could. "Wh-what do you want?"

"I'm Kagome!" Kagome smiled as she hovered before him so he could see she meant no harm. "Don't worry. I'm not here to hurt you. I heard you crying and came to see if I could be of help."

"Oh…" the little pup sniffled as he wiped his snotty nose on his sleeve. "What are you?"

"I'm a pixie!" Kagome said as she stood on the little pup's knee. "What's your name?"

"Inuyasha." he said as he looked at the sparkling fairy with curiosity.

She looked to be around four inches tall with elfin shaped ears and long wavy black hair. On her back were two sparkly silver wings that shimmered when they moved. He loved how they reflected different colors like a diamond when the light hit them. She had big doe brown eyes and a bright smile that made him feel warm and fuzzy inside. Her outfit looked to be made from a scrap of green cloth and her daisies scent made him feel... happy?

"What's a pixie?" Inuyasha asked as he continued to check her out.

"A pixie is a magical creature born from a baby's first laugh." Kagome explained making his eyes widen in surprise.

"Really?" Inuyasha awed in amazement.

"Yup! We love to play games, do tricks, sing and dance!" Kagome exclaimed as she flew around the cavern making Inuyasha smile. "Some pixies can fly like me and others can do special skills like tinker, care for animals, alter the weather and garden. I'm a healer fairy so I'll be able to fix your injuries right up!"

"That's amazing!" Inuyasha exclaimed as Kagome came to stand on his knee. "Do all pixies look like you do?"

"We all look about the same but come in different colors, shapes and sizes." Kagome said as she flexed her wings behind her. "I'm actually short for a pixie. Most fairies are just a little bit taller than me."

"How much taller?" Inuyasha asked as Kagome placed her hand less than an inch over her head. "Pst! That's nothing."

"To me it is!" Kagome pouted with her hands on her hips. She looked too cute when she was upset and the sight made him giggle. "Every little bit of height helps!"

"That's true." Inuyasha agreed. Only being three feet tall he'd had his fair share of being bullied by others. Not a day went by he didn't wish he was bigger and stronger so he could put them in their place. "Do all pixies dress like you do?"

"No, we make our outfits with whatever we can find." Kagome explained as she twirled around his head. "This dress is made from a handkerchief I found but I have other clothes made from leaves and flowers."

"Interesting." Inuyasha observed as he took in the tiny stitches on her make shift dress.

It was a light green color with off the shoulder sleeves. It stopped just above her knees and twirled out like a bell when she moved. Never having seen a pixie before he wasn't sure what to compare her too. He wondered if all fairies were as pretty as she was. Whatever the other fairies looked like Kagome would always be his favorite. Seeing her eyeballing his own outfit he held up his suikan's sleeve.

"My father gave me these robes. Mama said they were made from a fire rat." Inuyasha explained.

"I wondered that!" Kagome smiled as she ran her tiny hand down the course red fabric. "It's the perfect play clothes for a young pup like you. Anytime you snag it on something it should mend on its own and grow with you as you get older."

"Yup." Inuyasha nodded. "Mama said the same thing."

"Speaking of which... where are your parents? How did you get all the way out here?" Kagome asked as she noticed his eyes starting to mist with tears.

"Mama died over a month ago and father died protecting us the day I was born." Inuyasha hiccupped as he tried to wipe away his tears. "The people in our village didn't like me. I ran away when they tried to cut off my ears to make me look like them. I've been on my own ever since."

"Oh honey…" Kagome soothed as she hugged her tiny body around his forearm. "I'm so sorry."

"Mama said I have a brother somewhere in the west. I tried to find him but kept getting attacked by angry villagers and demons." Inuyasha sobbed. "That's why I look like I do. If I hadn't found this place I would have been eaten by ogres."

"Well you're no longer lost kid. Somehow you made it to the west." Kagome said as she gently patted his head.

"I am?" Inuyasha choked out as he tried to stop crying. He was so tired of crying.

"Yup!" Kagome giggled as she wiped away one of his tears. "You're actually sitting in the middle of the western wood!"

"Huh..." Inuyasha sniffled as he thought over what she'd said. "Now that I'm here, I have no idea where to go."

"Why don't we go look for him together? We could head to the capital and work our way outwards from there?" Kagome suggested making his amber eyes widen in surprise.

"You'd really do that?" Inuyasha asked. "You'd help a half-demon like me?"

"Why not?" Kagome shrugged. "Being a human, half-demon or a pure blooded demon doesn't matter to me. You are simply Inuyasha. The cute inu pup who's looking for his brother."

"Wow..." Inuyasha awed. "No one besides my mama has ever been nice to me."

"Well we'll just have to fix that won't we?" Kagome giggled as she pulled on his sleeve to help him get up. "Are you well enough to move?"

"I'll be fine." Inuyasha grit his teeth as he limped towards the exit. "My demon blood is already healing me."

"That's good but I'd still like to check on your wounds." Kagome nodded as they came to the exit. "My home isn't too far from here. Let's stay there for the night so you can rest. We can head to the capital to look for your brother tomorrow."

"Alright." Inuyasha nodded as he gripped the vine on the side of the cliff.

"Inuyasha wait!" Kagome gasped when she noticed the vine starting to give at the top of the cliff. "You'll fall if you go that way."

"Well how else am I going to get up there?" Inuyasha frowned as he too noticed the fraying roots. They must have come loose when he was fleeing from those ogres earlier.

"You'll have to fly like me!" Kagome said, making his eyes widen with fear.

"Fl-fly?!" Inuyasha gapped as Kagome began to sprinkle green dust all over him. "Are you crazy?! I can't fly!"

"You can if you think of a happy thought." Kagome smiled as he began to glow a soft green color. "Once you have that happy thought hold onto it."

"Wah!" Inuyasha panicked as his legs lifted out from under him. "What do I do now? I don't want to fall!"

"Take my hand." Kagome giggled as she began to pull him up the cliff. "You won't fall as long as you remember to hold onto that happy thought."

"Got it!" Inuyasha nodded as he screwed his eyes shut and chanted his happy thoughts over and over in his head.

Once they were safely on top of the cliff Kagome lowered Inuyasha to the ground. As soon as his feet were planted on the grass he stopped glowing a soft green color.

"Well that was fun!" Kagome giggled when she saw Inuyasha collapse onto the ground.

"Maybe for you!" Inuyasha panted as he tried to steady his racing heart. He closed his eyes and sighed as he relaxed with his back against the grass. "The ground suits me just fine."

"Fine by me!" Kagome said as she stood on his chest. "Using my pixie dust makes me tired. The longer I use it the longer it takes for me to recover."

"Good thing it was only a few minutes then." Inuyasha grunted as he got to his feet. "How far is this home of yours?"

"It's about a ten minute walk from here but let's swing by the river first so you can wash up." Kagome said as she flew in front of him to lead the way. "The smell of your blood might attract unwanted visitors and I want you good and clean before I patch you up."

"Good idea." Inuyasha nodded as he slowly walked behind her.
