*Sound effects*
I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh! or Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. I only own my OCs and the story I write.
The last things he ever heard were the sounds of a girl screaming and a truck blaring its horn. As soon as his mind registered those noises they suddenly ceased into silence. It's almost as if everything in the world just disappeared. When he tried to open his eyes to see what happened, he couldn't. It was as if he had no eyes to open and everything around him and himself were just a black void. Then after a few minutes, hours, days, or even years drifting, he didn't know, he heard a voice call to him.
"Max Jeffries"
Finally given the use of his eyes again, Max opens them with a start.
"Where…?" He quietly says as he tries to take in his new surroundings, which isn't saying much. He looks down and sees an ordinary plastic chair that he is currently sitting on. The room is only lit up by a mysterious light from above, that only illuminates what is currently around and in front of him. Across from him there's a more lavish, white chair with a matching table next to it. Then there's a-
"HEY!"
"Agh!" Max's attention is snapped away from whatever he was looking at next by a screech coming from the blue haired girl sitting in the chair… that he was just looking at…?
How on earth did I not see her there?! He wonders as his eyes almost want to bulge out of his skull for missing such an attention-grabbing character.
Sitting in the chair was an annoyed looking girl, about his age (16-17), with long sky blue hair, blue eyes, and a…magical girl costume…? She has white arm warmers, dark blue boots, and her dress is blue and sleeveless, with a green ribbon. Her skirt is a very short blue with…
Oh god there's nothing underneath it! Max panics and slaps his hand over his eyes to block his view. She can't kill me if I didn't see anything…wait…I'm already dead… Can I be even more dead? Would I just skip going to heaven and just cease to exist? Would I just swim around some more in that black void from earlier? Maybe I'll be-
"MAX JEFFRIES STOP IGNORING ME!" The blue girl yells at him causing him to sit ramrod straight and look her dead in the eyes. "Seriously, I have better things to do then watch your sorry a-" She then cuts herself off and sits back in her chair and crosses her left leg over her right leg and clears her throat.
*Ahem* "Max Jeffries." She now continues in a more serene tone of voice rather than the shrill banshee from a few seconds ago.
"Yes…?"
"I regret to inform you that you have recently passed away."
"Well, that sort of happens when you get hit by an eighteen-wheeler hehehe…" He sheepishly rubs the back of his head.
"Quite…" She looks at him as if she doesn't really care, but he just ignores it cause he would rather get an explanation on what's happening. "Anyway, I am the goddess Aqua and I have brought you before me to help you move on to your next life."
"Wait! What about that girl I pushed out of the way? Is she okay?!"
"Oh her?" Aqua lazily leans over and looks at a piece of paper labeled "WHY THIS DORK DIED" for a few seconds. "Yeah… she's fine… Actually, if you didn't push her out of the way she would be here in your place." She then slowly leans back to her original position.
"Oh thank god." Max wipes his forehead. "I thought that my death would've been meaningless in a "Yu Yu Hakusho" type of situation. Glad that's not the case." He smiles knowing his death wasn't in vain.
"Don't let Botan hear you say that…" she murmurs.
"Wait what?!"
"Nothing…now stop interrupting me! I have a script to go through you know! Just let me get on with this already!" she pulls out said script from under her chair and slaps it down on the table.
Script…? Am I being pranked right now? You know what I'm just gonna let this "goddess" finish her speech and see where to go from there. He finishes his thoughts with a nod for Aqua to continue.
"Now if you go to Heaven you can't do anything sexual up there, so it's really boring." And it looks like she had already continued reading off the script while Max was thinking of how to handle this. "Now, the third option!" Guess I missed the first one… Aqua then stands up with her arms held out. "I can send you too-!"
*Knock Knock Knock*
Aqua and Max look towards the source of this new interruption as a brown stone door with a golden Ankh appears out of nowhere.
Aqua suddenly looks very nervous and starts to sweat profusely. "Uh oh… I'm in trouble…" she starts to lean back into her chair as if it will somehow save her from what's about to happen.
"Wait why are you in trouble?" Max asks as he glances in the blue girl's direction and back to the door.
"SHHHHHHHH! BE QUIET! Wait no, I mean" she calms herself down and looks as if she hatched a brilliant idea." …no one's home…"
…
…
…
"Did that actual-"
*SLAM!*
The stone door opens abruptly, and thankfully cutting Aqua off, and then a golden light floods the entire room. The light is so brilliant that Max needs to shield his eyes from the glow.
Max slowly reopens his eye and is stunned at the new sight before him. Instead of the dark and rather plain void of a room, the area had transformed into a gorgeous desert oasis. The floor had turned into grainy sand that would shift at the slightest movement. The sky was now clear and blue with not a cloud in sight, and even though the sun was directly on them, there was no heat. The climate was the most pleasant atmosphere he's ever felt in his life. As if he was actually feeling a nice, cool spring breeze rather than the desert's harshest heat waves.
"Yep, she's pissed if she dragged us over to her room…" Aqua flinches as she hears the sand shift under someone's footsteps walking towards them from Max's left. Looking in said direction leaves Max speechless with what he sees.
The void that once surrounded the stone door had changed to a massive, golden pyramid. Walking out of the door was a beautiful, caramel skinned beauty. She wore a dazzling, yet conservative, red dress with gold trimmings. Her hair is as black as the night and covering the top of her head is a golden band tied back with an ankh dangling onto her forehead. Her eyes were the tanned brown of the sands that they currently stood upon, with a little eye liner to add that cool Egyptian eye design. The most fascinating part of her attire, however, were the two armbands that she wore. Connected to those armbands were two multi-colored wings that fluidly moved along with her arm's movements.
Now she screams goddess much more than the blue banshee over here. Maybe she'll be able to give me some answers. And actually be pleasant to talk to for that matter. He thinks to himself in hope.
"He-he-hey, Isis. Fu-funny seeing you he-he-re." Aqua stutters out knowing that she's gonna get it.
"Aqua…" the now named goddess, Isis, speaks in a calm yet firm tone. "You stole the young man I had summoned once his death occurred…"
"Well… yeah… I kind of did… But I had a good reason for it!"
"And what reason is that?"
"All of the ones I get to send to my world to be saved are a bunch of idiots, so I thought you wouldn't mind since you and the others get all the decent ones." She speaks out in sudden, newfound confidence as if she knows Isis will listen to her. "Now, if you don't mind, I was just about to tell him about my world."
Isis' hand has now moved up to meet the bridge of her nose in frustration. She closes her eyes and breathes in deep to calm herself down. After a tense few seconds…
"No."
Suddenly, the water from the oasis shoots out from its pool and grabs Aqua by the leg. Before she can offer some kind of whiny complaint she is dragged into the water and disappears into a fit of bubbles.
"Oh thank goodness she's gone." A relieved smile spreads across her face. She looks towards Max and waves her hand. The two chairs are transformed into wooden thrones with very comfortable red cushions and arm rests. She walks over to her own chair and looks back at her guest.
"Sorry about little Aqua. She tends to be very hard to deal with unless it goes her way."
"Oh no! It's fine! She was just a little loud is all." Max waves his hands rapidly in front of him in embarrassment for being apologized to by a divine being.
"It is okay to admit it. Even I know she's quite the brat." She laughs into her hand. "Anyway, she was not the one who was meant to receive you."
"She wasn't? How come?"
"There are many different beings that receive the dearly departed and Aqua is one of them. However, you are not part of the small region that Aqua must take care of. She thinks that she deserves a larger region to take care of, but due to her behavior towards us and the ones she must see to that won't be happening anytime soon."
"Wait… How come I'm in your domain? I'm not from Egypt and I'm quite sure I didn't have any family members or ancestors from there." He crosses his arm and tilts his head to the side as he begins to think of an answer.
"Actually, that is quite easy to explain."
"Oh? What is it?"
"America has always been one of the few neutral grounds for those of the divinity. There are many kinds of religions that are worshipped all over the country. And because there is so much, there can't be just one being watching over that region, so we all work with whoever worships who, or whoever we meet first."
"So…you found me when I passed away?"
"Yes…Now…" Her smile starts to lessen and changes from one who is happy to explain things to someone who is in mourning. "I am so sorry for you untimely death, Max Jeffries…"
This catches Max off guard. "Wait! Why are you apologizing? There's nothing wrong here. It's fine, really!" He tries to wave off her concern.
"Oh, but there is… You were taken too soon…"
"What do you mean by that?"
"All people have a time when they are supposed to pass on. It is all pre-written. However, your time was not yet up. There was so much more you were supposed to do. So much more that would have improved your life… And now it is gone…"
Max is stunned into silence. Most of his life he had been alone. The family he came from was incredibly loaded and pompous to go with it. He never fit in with his parents and the lifestyle they wanted him to play apart of. Once he had fully dedicated himself to be an artist, he was thrown out of his house faster than he could pick up a brush. And that was just a few months ago… He had been living on his own earning art scholarships for the pieces he would paint to make enough to live. When he had saved that girl's life, he was just about to meet with a museum curator to finally sell one of his pieces…
"Man…that's actually a little depressing…" He looks downcast towards his feet. "But…" He looks back into Isis' eyes, surprising her with the resolution in his eyes. "If I was able to make someone's life better with mine then that's okay by me!"
Isis smiles at Max like a mother proud of her child. "Thank you for that, young Max. With that declaration said, I would like to offer you a chance."
He furrows his brows in confusion "A chance at what?"
"A chance at a new life. A new family." Max widens his eyes at this. "And an adventure."
"What kind of an adventure?" His brows return to their furrowed position thinking of what kind of adventure could await him.
"I will send you to a world that you are somewhat familiar with. And fear not, it will not contain ways for you to be easily slaughtered like the one Aqua was trying to send you to."
"WAIT WHAT?!"
"In her world, the weakest monsters such as, giant toads, could kill anyone without much effort…" She deadpans with a twitch in her eye.
…
…
"I hope whatever religion Aqua has fails…"
"We all do, young Max…"
…
…
*Ahem* "Let's get back on track, yeah…?"
"Yes. Now, I will not be sending you to this world on your own. You will still retain your memories, and I will be giving you a couple gifts during the first few years of your new life."
"Hmm…" Max takes a moment for him to think. This isn't sounding too bad. I'll be sent to a world that I'll already know, so I should already know how to make things work there. And…I'll also be given a new family. And from how Isis is talking, it will be one that actually gives a damn about me… That's worth it on its own…
Max looks Isis in the eyes once again with determination and nods. "I'll take it."
She smiles at this and waves her hand to the oasis waters. The surface of the water begins to glow and symbols start drawing themselves in the light. When the light fades, the water is covered with a large circle with rings of hieroglyphics surrounding a large ankh.
She lowers hand and gestures to the pool. "Step into the center and you will be on your way."
He nods and makes his way onto the circle. As he steps onto the diagram, the water shimmers, but his shoes don't feel wet at all. It's as if he is walking on water. I wonder how often Jesus does this. He smiles to himself and continues to the center. When he stands on the part where the loop and the cross of the symbol meet in the middle, he begins to slowly float upwards.
Isis walks over to the circle and raises her arms, spreading out her wings. "In your next life, you will see me when I have decided what gift to give you. Use them as you see fit. Now…" She raises her arms higher and as she does so, Max begins to pick up more speed upwards. "Go! And live your new life proudly henceforth!"
"WHOA SH-!" Max is skyrocketed out of Isis' domain. Past the sky and back into the black void. As he ascends, his eyes begin to close and he leaves the domain of the gods to his new life with two last words he says for the kind goddess of life.

October 8th, 1989:
On a grand island in the middle of the ocean, lays a large castle surrounded by forests of trees and small mountains. Amongst the pouring rain, on this dark night, screams can be heard from the castle. The screams filled the castle for hours on end along with orders being shouted from person to person. Then, as if by some miracle, the screams finally started to quiet down. There was now a peaceful, yet somber atmosphere easing its way into the castle.
In one of the castle's many chambers, filled with medical equipment, doctors and their nurses, lays a beautiful, yet frail and worn out young woman. Her normally voluminous golden hair is matted down with sweat. Her eyes, a deep ocean blue, are slightly hazed with dark rings around them. This is Cecilia Pegasus and she has just had her first child… at the age of 16.
She catches her breath and manages to keep her eyes open, despite the slight temptation to close them. The doctor's look to her in worry but say nothing as a nurse opens her door with a blue bundle in her arms.
"Madame Pegasus, your baby is ready for you." The nurse looks at her with a small, yet grim smile. Cecilia holds her arms out for her child as the nurse hands him to her. The doctors look at the heartbeat monitor and shake their heads slightly. "Mrs. Pegasus, we've informed your husband about your new child, and he's trying to get here as soon as he can, but those brutes at KaibaCorp have been holding him back…" They look towards her and see the smile on her face as she looks and cooes at her baby. "Is there anything we can do for you…?"
She shakes her head, "Just leave me and my baby alone for a while…" she responds without even looking at them. The staff silently respect her wishes and make their way out the door.
Once they leave, she looks at the door and begins to think… Cecilia Pegasus has always been a weak and frail girl and she knows this. She was always treated like a glass doll rather than the energetic girl that was full of life that she wanted to be. That is why she fell in love with her Maximillian. While he treated her with care, it wasn't because he felt like she would break, it was because he was such a gentleman and loved her. He loved how honest she was and wanted to preserve that, but not in a way that would keep her locked away. So, he would paint her in all of her vibrant beauty. And then she would paint him, and only manage a silver haired stick figure standing on a green mess.
He was hers and she was his… But Cecila knew that it would not last… Her recent visits to the hospital the past couple years had shown a decline in her health. She would be lucky if she lasted until she was 18. She wanted to fight it, but knew that it was inevitable… So…she would go down swinging.
There were two major things that she had on her bucket list that she knew could not stand to pass on without fulfilling these. The moment that she had built up enough courage, she dragged her beloved Maximillian into their private garden, put on a brave face and proposed to him. Pegasus, at first, was stunned with his mouth agape. And then he started to laugh out loud, which almost made Cecilia throw the ring box at his head. However, he got down onto one knee as well and proposed to her saying "I was going to propose sooner or later, but it seems that you have more courage than I do."
A couple months later and they were happily married at the ages of 15 and 16. Many thought they were going too fast, but she would not hear it. She was going to fill the last years of her life with happiness.
Once they were married came the most difficult task on her bucket list…Having a child. She knew it would be the last thing she would ever do, but she did not care. Cecilia wanted to bring their own bundle of heaven into the world. With a slightly selfish determination, she sabotaged their honeymoon. Anything that would prevent her from getting pregnant, she either did not take or ruined so it would have no effect.
A few weeks later, and she was expecting. Pegasus was immediately concerned about her health, but she lied and said that she would be okay and more than happy to have this child, knowing her fate. She wanted to name them after her love, if he was a boy, because she said that she would love to have two of him running around. Her husband shook his head in exasperation but laughed at the idea all the same and agreed to their child's name.
Maximillian J. Pegasus Jr.
Shuffling in her hands broke her out of her memories and she looked down. Her baby was opening his eyes for the first time. Looking upon her newborn, she couldn't hold back the tears of joy she had building up. Looking at her son, she could see his hair was identical to her husband's silver locks. But now that his eyes were open, she could see her own ocean blue eyes staring back at her. This was the child that she always dreamed of.
"H-hello… Max." She said with a small, but beautiful smile. "Oh, you are so beautiful, my little one. I'm your mom…my…"
Cecilia looks at her baby and starts to sob. "I'm…" She breathes in, trying to gather her words. "I'm so sorry Max… I wish that I wasn't so pathetic and weak… I… I want to see you grow up…I want to be a part of my baby's life… but…"
As if responding to his mother's feelings, Max begins to silently cry and grabs her arm.
She feels the tugging on her arm and laughs a little. "Here I am crying for your loss and yet you're trying to cheer me up. You are going to be so smart and so strong. I just wish…that I was strong enough to see it…"
Why…why does it have to be me… I was prepared for this…and yet… Cecilia looks back down at her little bundle and then closes her eyes to sob. I've just now held him and… I don't want to let him go… It's… just not fair… It's not fair to me… It's not fair to Maximillian…and it's not fair to Max…
IT'S NOT FAIR! She screams in her mind.
As this is happening, a figure begins to form into the corner of the room, and slowly begins to walk up to this scene of sorrow.
Out of options in her mind, Cecilia does the only thing that she thinks may help… Pray…
Please… She starts. if anyone can hear me… Please don't take me away from my baby. I cannot leave him. I know I don't usually do this, but please…if anyone is listening…let me stay with my son…
The figure in the corner reaches the mother and son, the baby looks towards the figure and gives a small look of surprise (at least a look of surprise that a newborn can give).
It's Isis.
The Goddess of Life sees Max's gaze at her and gives him a sad smile. She holds out her hand and it begins to glow, but only Max is able to notice it. Once her palm is shining with magic, she places her hand on Cecilia's shoulder. The weakened mother of the room begins to glow with the same color of magic.
Cecilia's eyes snap open and her breath hitches in her throat. She feels… light and free. As if nothing is holding her down anymore. When she's about to question it, a voice speaks to her.
I have heard your pleas. You shall stay with your child. Now and forever to watch over them.
The voice recedes and she feels as if she's fading away from herself. She looks down at her crying child and puts her forehead to his. "I will never leave you…" she whispers. At what feels like her last moment, she gives a final Thank you to whoever listened to her and closes her eyes with a small on her face, holding Max close to her.
Isis withdraws her hand from Cecilia's shoulder, and with it comes a small orb of light. Max looks at it in confusion and Isis gives him a knowing smile. This is the first gift. Treasure it always. She speaks to him in his mind. Her hand lowers the orb to his chest and the orb absorbs into him. The baby's eyes then begin to droop, and he falls asleep.
The goddess pulls her hand back, now orb-less, and walks back to the edge of the room. She looks back at the two and then…
*Snap*
She disappears.
*Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-*
The moment the goddess disappears, the heartbeat monitor flatlines…
Outside of the room, hurried footsteps start getting closer and closer until the door to the chamber is slammed open.
The drenched form of Maximillian Pegasus Sr. hurriedly rushes into the room with his doctors. However, the moment he sees the bed he stops. No…
The doctors continue towards the machine. They observe the monitor, check Cecilia's pulse, count the seconds… Nothing…
"I'm sorry Mr. Pegasus…but…she's gone." The doctor checking her place says while observing the still form of his employer. The doctor by the monitor shuts it off and shakes his head in dismay.
"Get out…" Pegasus whispers in disbelief.
"I'm sorry, sir- "
"Get out!" He cuts them off in a harsh tone without even glancing in their direction as they run out of the room.
…
…
…
You're really gone…aren't you…? He looks upon her still form, walking slowly closer. "Cecilia…" he reaches the edge of the bed, tears forming in his eyes. "I'm so sorry…" He collapses to his knees and begins to let his tears fall from his face.
"I should have been here…!" He yells out in a whisper. "I should have been here, so I could do…something!" He starts to get louder as his emotions start to run. "I could have helped you! I could have gotten better people to take care of you! I could have saved you! But…!" He cuts himself off as his gaze meets the floor.
"It's too late…"
…
…
…
Pegasus gathers his emotions, steels himself, and raises his head to look at his late wife. The first thing he notices is the smile still radiating off her. Beautiful even in death. His eyes make their way down to what she was smiling at. As his eyes move lower, they start to widen in realization as they meet the bundle held close in her arms.
"Max…" His father whispers out. His shaking hands reach out towards his newborn son. As they get closer, the trembling seems to worsen, and he stops himself. He looks to the ground in shame. "I cannot hold you now… Not when this is my fault… I don't… I don't deserve you right now…"
…
…
…
"I need to fix this…" He said to no one in particular. His brown, yet reddened eyes, look towards his son's sleeping form with resolution. "I will fix this. It is what you deserve."
Maximillian Sr. slowly rises back up to his feet and begins to make his way out of the chamber.
There has to be a way to fix this! He declares in his head.
He begins walking towards his study, ignoring the medical staff as they run by.
Meanwhile, outside, the storm begins to take a turn for the worse.
Hello everyone! Middl Mo (pronounced Middle Mo) here! I would like to thank you for taking an interest in my story. This is my first time ever writing a fanfiction. However, I have been wanting to write one for years. Seriously, my head and my phone are filled with notes on like, 5 other stories I want to write so badly. Unfortunately, I'm in college and have a bad case of procrastination. Hopefully, I can write whatever I write at a decent pace, but we shall see.
Anyway, enough about me, let's talk about "The Next Millennium." We have just witnessed the rebirth of a random artist named Max Jeffries into Maximillian Joseph Pegasus Jr. the son of Cecilia and Maximillian Sr. Now in the anime/manga, Cecilia dies of some random illness before she reaches the age of 17. This leads Pegasus to eventually travel to Egypt to receive the Millennium Eye at the age of 18. In the English dub, these two were not just lovers they were married. So, I thought that if she was going to pass on it would be for something more important than "Sad death-osis".
In this story, I wanted to give her a personality of a sheltered, but free spirit. I needed to give her an actual personality because if you can't tell, she'll be pretty integral later on. Since, she will no longer have a frail body or have people that can have her conform to regal society, she will have a very free personality that I will have fun developing as the story goes on!
Now, something I want to talk about for the cards in this fanfic. All of the cards that Max will use in this game are personal decks owned by me. I am in no way a professional player. I don't play online that much because it isn't that fun when most people's goals are an OTK. So, I will be using the decks that I have fun with. I have some plans for an Arc-V fic, so when that happens, I will put more into the decks I use for that story.
The last note I want to bring up about the cards is that my cards will be Max's cards from his old life. And Max is an artist and the son of Pegasus, so he will be creating those cards with his father. However, a lot of the cards are synchro and xyz types and those don't exist in GX. So, with a bit of the power of a cheating card maker, these cards will be turned into fusions in some manner.
Okay, now the final FINAL note that I want to bring up is that Max will have knowledge about the original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime (he doesn't get involved that much) and GX. His GX knowledge will only be around the plot of season 1 and a little of season 2. This is like my own knowledge of GX. I only remember most of the beginning and unless I dig deep enough, I don't really remember the other two seasons. So, Max will be mostly experiencing things after season 1 blind. Now, there will be changes due to his interactions with some characters. The changes will vary, but won't change the major plots. Also Max's knowledge is not every single deck that every random student/bad guy uses. He will know about the major cards that the main characters, like Jaden and Chazz use, but not much else because I don't know every card the characters have.
Alright, I'm gonna let you go now. I hope you enjoy whatever I manage to cook up for you guys. Please leave a comment or a review if you want to! I'm always up to listening on how to fix what needs fixing.
Farewell!
