In which the little red Cardinal Palismen stays with Luz, and teaches the members of the Owl House a few things. Including King.
"Wait – little buddy. You actually want to stay?"
The cardinal chirped happily in response. Luz's eyes sparkled like diamonds. "My own Palismen! Ooh what to call you – I know! Reggie! Your soo cute!"
Reggie chirped and cooed as they were rubbing up against Luz's cheek affectionately. "Just wait until I show Eda and King!"
Luz wasted now time showing her new Palismen "Ta-da, welcome to the newest member of the Owl House! Meet Reggie!"
"Reggie?" King and Eda said in unison, titling their head sideways. Said Reggie hopped off of Luz's shoulder and onto the table, then nuzzled up against Owlbert.
"Ooooh they're just cute beans."
King twitched in irritation. "Hey! I thought I was your best-friend slash-cutest buddy!"
Eda snorted, looked in affection at the two Palismen who were nuzzling into each other. "Cute, Luz. Cute. So… Where'd you find this little guy?"
The Palismen had a scar over his eye, which wasn't good. Luz scooped him up and flushed. The whole bout with the Golden Guard – Hunter. She then realized if Hunter was okay, and then King snapped his talons back at Luz. "Hey! Wake up Luz! Your spacing out! Jeez, what's with you? Your face is also a questionably shade of pink. What are you playing at?"
Luz yelped. Hunter – what? Then Reggie landed on her shoulder. He eyed her. "Uh… I – uh. Did not totally learn the Golden-Guard's identity and uh – um. Oops!" Luz was rambling until Reggie extended his wing over Luz's mouth.
"What? The Golden Guard was just some powerless witch working for Belos, sent on a mission to capture Palismen because of their 'wild magic'! What a load of boloney! I can't believe Belos would do such a thing! He doesn't care about wild magic, he just cares if someone is strong enough to stand up to him or not!"
Luz winced. "Wow Eda… I… Didn't know you disliked Belos that much."
"Disliked?" Eda now had an apple in her hand that she pulled from the fridge. "No. More like I think of him as the worst, far most vile and sickening creature known to all witch, demon, and now Palismen kind – aside from myself – and that's saying a lot – "
She caught herself.
"Eda…" King shrunk down. "Your not… Any of those things! You're not Belos! If Belos is really that bad, then your not him!"
King looked like he wanted to cry.
Owlbert hopped up to Eda and chirped.
"Eda… Are… You okay? Do you – need to talk?" Luz's eyes fell.
Eda rubbed her temples. "It's the curse. If I don't get angry, I won't turn into, that thing. If I beat myself down before it beats anyone 'up' and allow myself to get too 'wild' and angry to speak my mind – " Luz gasped.
Then the human-magic user wrapped her arms around her mentor. "That's awful! It's not there to control magic, it's there to hurt you!"
Eda smiled and patted Luz's head. "Yeah well that's not what they thought when they cursed me. Funny thing is I hardly remember who cursed me in the first place."
Luz hugged Eda tighter. "Ah shucks kid. Come'er you too King."
"Ahhhh. Edaaa you maybe a grumpy old owl lady but your my grumpy old owl lady!" King latched onto the cursed witch.
Eda made a face. "I'll ignore that."
"We care about you, you just need to find a more positive outlet for your magic and your emotions." Luz said – and Eda blinked rapidly. "I mean you kind of have a messed up relationship with your mom and your sister. No offense."
Eda chuckled. "If anything I have a messed up relationship with my dad. Though truth is I'm missing some details of that too. He was hardly there for most of my childhood."
"So… If it'll make you any better… Let's focus on practicing some Glyphs! Come' on King! You can practice too! I know you can do magic, if you try hard enough, I know anything you put your mind to is possible!" Reggie chirped.
"Aw, I dunno. That was just a one-time thing." King drooped his tail.
"Glyph session time!"
Eda leaned her hand back on the floor, Owlbert and Reggie were happily chirping to one another. "So, I guess this little rascal is staying. One more mouth to feed."
"We don't have to practice all night, but lets see what we can get done and how far we can go for now, okay?"
Turns out Reggie was a really good learner and the more he learned the more they all followed. It was late into the night – well – early in the morning when King practiced his first Glyph and casted it. A light spell, the first spell Luz learnt.
"I – did a magic!" Both Eda and Luz rubbed their eyes. "Aw, that's too bad. You weren't even watching!"
"Oh my gosh I have school tomorrow! I'm sorry King, you and Reggie can keep practicing but I gotta hit the sack!"
King grumbled and wagged his tail. Reggie nudged King further. Eda smiled though she was tired, she didn't get a lot of sleep most days anymore due to her curse wearing on her body even more. "You can show me, kiddo."
King grinned and smiled, drew the Glyph with his pencil and showed the spell being cast – a light spell. Eda's eyes lit up and she laughed. "You can do magic! That's great!"
"You're not impressed?" King let go of the spell. "I knew it was just a fool's dream that I could – "
"Hey, I didn't say that I wasn't impressed. After I found out about how your horn was and it's connection to you; I thought you might not able to cast magic ever." King's eyes widened and then he looked to his paws. "Demon's aren't like witches, King they don't use the tools like we do. But here you are, adapting the way of the life of a witch, and yet – "
"I'm a demon. Does that make me weird?"
Eda grinned. "A total weirdo. But we're all weirdos here, kid."
King chuckled, then petted Reggie on the head, and wagged his tail. "Well, I've had a pretty good teacher so far today."
Reggie chirped and danced.
"Alright fuzzball time to go to bed. Even demons need their sleep." Eda grabbed King and pulled him to the couch with her. "Oh," She said to Reggie who nestled into a corner of the sofa, on the arm rest. "You want to join too."
The cardinal chirped.
