KORRA'S POV:
I walked around the earth kingdom, big round, and uncomfortable. I was carrying his baby and he didn't even know it. I walked around, hid well, and made my way to the next boat heading for the next city. I was going to give birth in the Foggy Swamp, but first, I needed to get there. Katara said something once about how dirty it looked, but how healing and magical the Swamp was.
She said, once, that the spirits were a cleansing place, and since I was giving this baby up, it would help me in a way that I needed after. He couldn't know I had his baby, and knowing that the Avatar had a child made them a target.
I boarded the boat, silent, calm, rubbing over my belly as we started moving over the water. He or she was kicking hard, Katara had tried to help me learn how to tell the gender and the bending of kids, but I never got it. She could tell with Pema so easily, but she wasn't around me. No one was.
"Foggy Swamp huh?" I looked over and saw an older man looking at me and then at my belly.
"Yes sir." I nodded at him and he sighed.
"You don't look like you're from there." He told me and I shook my head.
"No. I have heard the stories, the spirits and the vines and the people. I am giving him or her up..." I rubbed over the belly that sometimes felt so foreign to me, and looked at him. "Can't afford the baby, and the father isn't in the picture." I told him and he nodded slowly.
"I get it. The Swamp is a good place for any water bender to escape." He told me and I nodded slowly. "Do you have a plan?"
"No. I was told once to look for the village elders and seek refugee if I ever needed it." I told him and he smiled wide.
"Well... pleased to meet someone coming to see me. I am the head chief of the main village." He held out his hand I took it quickly and shook it. "Paksan." He told me his name and I took a breath.
"Katara." I lied and he nodded slowly. "I guess you know who I was named after." I joked and he nodded slowly.
"I knew Master Katara, the one married to the previous Avatar. She was a good woman." He told me and I nodded slowly.
"I met her once, she was a little flattered but I think mostly shocked that I was named after her." I told him another lie and he nodded and laughed.
"Katara was never one to get recognition. She's the only one that doesn't have a statue in Republic City." He told me and I acted shocked.
"Really? Why not? Not even outside the hospitals? She was an amazing healer." I said and he shook his head.
"She didn't like it. Never said why." He told me and I nodded and we talked about the baby, how far along I was, things like that. "May I?" He gestured to touching my belly and I nodded and let him. Maybe he could tell me the bending and gender.
"Can you tell what it is?" I asked him as he pushed his fingers into my belly here and there and closed his eyes to concentrate.
"A boy... and a waterbender." He told me and I took a deep breath and smiled out a shaky breath. Thankfully that might help me find a family in the swamp that was looking or in need of a baby.
"I should have known the waterbender part but I wanted to make sure. Apparently, he, likes to be on the water. He kicks a lot whenever I am on a boat or relaxing in the water." I told him and he nodded and looked over my belly again.
"You may seek shelter with me and my wife, as long as you need Avatar Korra." He told me and I paused at the use of my real name and he gave me a small smile. "All in the touch." He told me and I opened my mouth. "Your secret is safe with me. My wife is a midwife, and while I am a great healer, she will tend to you when your time comes."
"Thank you sir, so much." I told him and he nodded slowly. "Know any families that might want a baby?" I asked him and he looked over my face and gave me a sad shake of his head.
"Doesn't mean one wont take interest. We're big on family in the swamp, someone might want to add onto their hoard." He told me and laughed. "I had 6 kids, all of them have left het nest, or rather the vines by now."
TAHNO'S POV:
Every year I have to go back. Mom was adamant. It didn't bother me as much since the schedule I kept was gone. I didn't pro-bend, I was a teacher. I took off when I wanted since I did so many private lessons, and now, heading home after months of chaos in the big city, I couldn't wait to see home.
I rode the boat, thinking about how and what we would all be doing together. I knew two siblings wouldn't be there, but that left the rest of my sisters. I only had sisters, and I was number 4. I had lessons on hair treatments, I had lessons on makeup, and sass, and just about everything else.
But now, now, I was a big deal in the big city where thankfully none of my family lived. But each time I came home I was always leaving with a sense that I was missing something in RC. Some sort of filling sensation I only got after being annoyed and teased by my family.
My sisters. I huffed at the thought of them even now. I would arrive first and see them all come in. Shina was the oldest and a healer in the Fire Nation, she has a small family, meaning a husband and a goat dog. My next two sisters in line were twins, Fox and Luna. They wouldn't be there, they were in the United Nations Army and usually never got leave for the most important times in our family, but they liked it that way. My two younger sisters, Amaya, and Yana, they were still 'finding themselves' they went through RC once in their journey and seemed to like the life but said it stayed busy at all times and they liked the slow pace of other places.
I worked my way through the small town that was close to home, getting into a boat and nodding to the man who knew me, I paid for the way alone since I didn't want to wait and tossed my bag onto the seat and waited and watched the trees of my childhood come into sight.
"It's good to see you home and happy Tahno. Your father got a woman on a ride in a couple weeks ago. She was pregnant, didn't seem to know who he was at first." Half way there the man started to tell me about how there would also be a surprise tenant at our house. It wasn't that out there, but to have someone not from the swamp seek refuge in the head chiefs house was a big deal. Usually they would put the woman up in a separate hut and my mother would tend to her.
"Thanks." I told him as we pulled in, I had changed a long time ago so I was mostly looking like a regular guy getting home. Thankfully we wore more than just a leave now a days, though there were many days that I did walk around with a nice breeze like that as a kid. I was never one to wear a hat of leaf before.
I walked through the village, getting my usual snacks, saying hello to the people I knew before I left, and nodding to the elders I saw on my way up the tree. When I got there, I saw my mother right away, she was in the garden outside and I smiled and whistled making her stand from the woman behind her and she turned and screeched before coming out and around the gate and launching herself at me.
"Tahno I can't believe you're here a whole two days early!" She shouted and hugged me so tight and I buried my face in her neck. She was home, the hut could burn down and I could be in RC making her come visit and I would feel ten times better when I hugged her. She was a little thing, the best mom you could ask for though. "Here, come." She pulled back and grabbed my hands and pulled me in close. I tossed the bag down I carried and looked at the place she was pulling me, the pregnant lady they had taken in was having a hard time getting up.
"Here." I held out my hands and she sighed after a moment and set her hands in mine. She was a darker brown, a caramel coffee color. Her hands were a little rough and dirty, and her hair was hanging over her face and I could tell parts were sticking to her from sweat.
However I was not prepared to see who the woman was when she looked up at me. "Tahno." She smiled softly, nervously pulling her hands away from me and placing them on her big huge belly.
"Korra."
"You know each other?" I heard my mother and I turned to her. "Oh please tell me this isn't his baby!" She covered her mouth in shock and I shook my head right away.
"Mother-"
"It's not his. Tahno and I never... he was just a friend I knew before this happened." Korra told my mom and I looked back at her. "May I go inside and sit down?" She asked and I noticed she only asked because she had to get past me and my mom on her way there.
"Let's all go inside. Tahno you can get your bag inside too." She told me and I backed off and did as she said, leaving Korra alone with her for a moment and I reeled thinking about how Mako the Fire Rat left Korra like this, to deal with a baby all on his own. I put my bag in my old room, putting some things away and then I paced for a bit.
Korra, Avatar Korra, was knocked up and left all alone. I shook my head and went out and down the small stair case to see Korra wincing in pain as she sat down. "What happened?"
"What do you mean?" My mother wasn't around so her tone was a just a bit snippy.
"You defeated your uncle, something happened between you and Mako... did he tell you to leave?" I asked and she sighed and shook head before gulping hard and I saw her eyes start to water and I moved on the other side of her. "Korra, I am not judging, but if he did this to you and left you-"
"He doesn't know. I don't want him to." She told me and her hands went o her belly again, wincing and I sighed, looking around for my mother and then noticing that she probably left. "She went to get supplies." She told me again and I moved closer and reached around. "What-"
"My mother is a midwife, I know what to do." I told her and she shut her yap and I put pressure on her spin, my other hand moving around until I found the right muscle and she moaned and arched and she sighed softly when the pressure on her back subsided. "Better?" I asked and she nodded and leaned her head back. "Feet up."
She looked confused but I got down on the ground, making her foot go a little higher than what she gave me and started pushing the pressure points there and she seemed to relax even more. "I can't believe you're helping me."
"Korra, you gave me my bending back. You're pregnant and in pain with my mother gone. You're the avatar. I have a lot of reasons to help you." I told her and pushed on another and she gasped and seemed to sink into the couch. "That one..." I muttered moving her other foot up and doing it again making her hum in satisfaction.
"Your mother doesn't do this." She muttered and I smirked.
"She doesn't believe in doing this kind of thing until you're in labor." I told her and she sighed and gave a slight face. Apparently someone was not looking forward to labor. "Why are you in the swamp to give birth?"
"Well Republic city wasn't an option, Master Katara is gone, and I know no one else. She spoke about this place a lot. The culture and the was the Swamp could help a water bender in ways she couldn't pin down." I nodded at the thoughts and sentiments.
"But why?"
"He's going to go to a good family." She told me and swirled her finger over her belly, and I saw the water starting to fill her eyes again.
"Is that really what you want? Giving him up?"
"He doesn't have a daddy, and he has an avatar as a mommy... he's going to need so much protection if I keep him." At least she had thought about keeping the baby.
