Gibbs grabbed his phone from the kitchen table as he put down his glass of bourbon and answered the phone.
"Gibbs." He answered in an annoyed tone. Gibbs was shocked when he heard a familiar voice crying on the other line.
"Help me, Gibbs!"
His heart started to race. "Katie?! What's wrong?"
The line started breaking up, "Fight with...threw a rock...fire."
Gibbs' heart stopped, "Fire?"
"Yes!" Kate cried before screaming. "Jethro, please!"
"I'm coming, Katie!" Gibbs shouted before the line went dead. He grabbed his keys, forgetting about his jacket and ran out of his house and jumped into his car as he called Tony.
"Another case? Boss, we-"
"Get to Kate's apartment now."
Tony paused for a moment before speaking, "Why? What's wrong?"
"Her place is on fire."
"Oh, god. Okay. I'll call the others."
Gibbs hung up the phone and sped all the way to Kate's apartment. Once he reached there, he could see the whole building in flames and everyone was standing outside, the whole place covered with smoke. Gibbs shot out of his car and ran over to the building before getting stopped by a policeman.
"Sir, you can't go inside."
"There's someone still inside!" Gibbs yelled, trying to push the officer away from him.
The policeman called another officer over and the two men held Gibbs back before the roof of the building started to fall in.
"KATE!" Gibbs yelled as he punched one of the officers before pushing away the other and ran towards the building right as Tony, Abby, McGee, Ducky, and Jenny arrived.
"What's going on?" Jenny asked one of the officers.
The officer turned around and answered, "The building caught on fire and we're trying to evacuate everyone but a man just ran inside."
All five of the NCIS agents looked at each other and sighed, "Gibbs."
"How was the building set on fire?" Ducky asked with a concerned look on his wrinkled face.
"We don't know, sir."
"Well, what are you waiting for?! Find out!" Jenny yelled, making McGee, Ducky, and the officer jump.
"We are trying to, Ma'am."
INSIDE THE APARTMENT
Once Gibbs reached Kate's door, he kicked it down and ran inside, covering his nose with his arm as he looked around for Kate.
"KATE!" He yelled out before hearing a small whimper and a cough.
"Jethro." He heard making him turn, looking around the room.
"Katie! Where are you?!"
"Jethro!" Kate yelled before yelping when a part of the ceiling fell down behind her. Gibbs ran further into the house and found the room Kate was in. Fire was surrounding her, pieces of the ceiling fell around her. Kate started coughing before looking up to see Gibbs standing at the doorway.
"Jethro!" Kate cried as Gibbs took in the sight before him.
"Kate! Just-just stay there." He said as his heart started to race once again. He didn't know how to get to the brunette but he had to find a way soon otherwise the two will burn to ashes with the whole building.
"Gibbs, hurry!"
"I'm coming!" Gibbs yelled before he heard something creaking above him. He looked up before jumping out of the way as the door frame fell to the ground.
Kate gasped, "Are you okay?!"
"I'm fine." Gibbs groaned out as he stood up and looked around.
"Give me your hand, Kate."
Kate reached out to grab onto Gibbs' hand but then yelped when something fell behind her, sparks of fire burning onto her legs. Gibbs reached over and grabbed her hand, pulling her towards him. Kate gasped as she felt herself pressed against Gibbs.
"Are you okay?" Gibbs asked, wrapping his arms around Kate.
"I'm okay." Kate breathed out as she wrapped her arms around the older man. Gibbs kissed her head before looking around the room, the only way out...the window.
"Katie." Gibbs said softly as Kate hummed.
"Don't let go of my hand, okay?" He asked before feeling Kate nod her head on his chest. Gibbs grabbed Kate's hand and led her to the window. Pushing the frame up, he managed to open it and peek out to see the only way down was to get onto the ledge and jump which made Gibbs inhale sharply since they were on the second floor.
"Katie, listen to me."
"What is it, Jethro?"
Gibbs took Kate's hand and kissed her palm before explaining, "There's only one way out and that's the window. But, we're going to have to jump."
Kate's eyes widened, "Jump?!"
Gibbs nodded his head before feeling Kate grip his hand.
"But, Gibbs. We're on the second floor."
Gibbs nodded his head once more, "I know."
"If we jump, what the hell are we supposed to land on? There's nothing there to land on!" Kate exclaimed, peeking out of the window.
"I know, Kate."
"But, Gibbs-"
Before Kate could finish her sentence, she felt Gibbs' lips cover hers. She was stunned for a few seconds before moaning softly and kissing him back.
Gibbs broke the kiss and gave her a small smile as he cupped her cheek, "I love you, Katie."
"Now…" Gibbs started before Kate could say anything, as he turned her towards the window, standing behind her. "Get onto the ledge, carefully."
Kate nodded and hurriedly but carefully got outside and onto the ledge, Gibbs following behind her. The two heard crashing behind them which made Kate grab onto Gibbs hand. Gibbs smiled and squeezed her hand.
"On my count, we jump. Alright?"
"Gibbs-"
"One."
"Jethro."
"Two."
"I love you, Jethro."
Gibbs took a deep breath and whispered, "Three."
The two jumped off the ledge as the whole building started to collapse into flames. Gibbs pulled Kate into him as they fell to the ground.
Tony heard a yell before he and the rest of the team ran to the sound to see their boss and co-worker jumping off of the ledge before the building collapsed.
"GIBBS!"
"KATE!"
For Gibbs, all he felt was himself falling to the ground and the woman of his dreams in his arms before the whole world went black. For Kate, she felt as if she was tucked into a hard but soft corner before landing onto the ground. She felt a sharp pain in her shoulder making her scream painfully as another sharp pain was felt in her right ankle. Kate opened her eyes and turned her head slowly to see Gibbs laying next to her, ashes in his hair, his face and clothes covered in black spots from the smoke.
"Gibbs." Kate called out as she tried to get up. Her shoulder was aching but she still tried to get closer to him.
With her good arm, she shook him gently, "Jethro."
"Kate!" She heard someone call out. Turning her head, she saw the director and her co-workers running towards her and Gibbs.
Jenny fell onto her knees next to Kate and picked her up carefully, laying her head in her lap.
"Kate. Oh, my god."
Kate turned her head and looked at Gibbs as everyone's voices started to fade out and her vision started to get blurry. She could hear Tony and McGee calling out Gibbs' name while hearing Ducky talk to someone about a hospital.
"Jethro." Kate whispered before everything went black.
