Every story has a beginning and every great Witch has a past.
Hecate stood infront of her mirror. For the first time in two years the young fifth year was taking her bun out. To Hecate the bun represented the start of a new path. The life where rules were rules, and shall not be broken. Slowly taking the pin out, her black hair fell down. As her hair flowed freely she couldn't help but gaze out her window toward the forest. The reason that Joy was no longer. Hecate shook her head wanting to enjoy the silver gala for fifth years. She couldn't allow the memory of Indigo Moon ruin her night. The girl looked down at her fitted gown. The silk silver dress almost looked like ice upon her body. For the first time in years she didn't feel like the awkward ugly girl that others saw. She felt sophisticated and beautiful.Normally her presence would be on time for any event, but Hecate wanted her final day at Cackles to be magical. She wanted to make an entrance. A Grand Entrance. Waiting till she knew the hall would be filled with fellow pupils and Wizards from another school she took a deep breath. Clasping her right hand into a gentle fist, her silver nails gently pierced her skin while her body disappeared from her bedroom. Mummering the smoke spell under her breath that she created a week ago for this exact moment.
Smoke cold as ice filled the hall as Hecate's ears filled with gasps of shock. She appeared gracefully in the middle of the floor. Her pale complexion was complimented by the silver fabric that clung to her skin long figure. making her looking like an angelic angel. Her dress and look was captivating everyones attention. She watched their eyes follow the silk train, upon her silver dress up until they reached her flawless face. Giving everyone a kind smirk with her ruby red lips; she recieved a pleasant applause. Hecate was pleased with herself.
"Beautiful" Ada Cackle whispered. Hecate offered her headmistress a true smile before both witche's ears heard the main doors swing open.
A gorgeous blonde stood at the entrance. Her dress was bright as gold making her skin seem flawless as if the sun kissed it. It was the exact dress Hecate wore but the golden material instead of silver, the gold was unique since it stood out at the Silver Gala. Everyone except Hecate Hardbroom was in awe. She couldn't help but feel a bit annoyed. For once the girl wanted the attention upon herself. Instead, all eyes fell upon Pippa Pentangle. Pippa was the most popular girl at Cackles. Hecate didn't understand the girl as they grew older. Long ago the pair were childhood friends until their second year at Cackles. Hecate felt like their paths no longer crossed, that Pippa was one to out shine everyone by popularity and looks. Hardbroom couldn't help but feel that her former friend was proving the point that Hecate thought. As the crowd that once surrounded Hecate faded toward Pippa. The dark witch allowed herself to walk toward the shadow of the hall. She felt like being alone. Not wanting to sulk, because sulking was beneath her. She couldn't help but wipe a tear that fell from her dark brown eyes. The thought of feeling silly wearing a dress and makeup crossed the young girls mind.
"Hiccup" she heard her old nickname that only one person ever used. Pippa's voice was soft and smooth while her blue eyes were filled with care. Hecate rose a dark brow at the girl she once called Pipsqueak.
"Yes" not calling her by any name. She couldn't deny that Pippa looked amazing, the dress clung to the blonde's figure perfectly showing off the young girls curves. Hecate couldn't help but compare herself to Pippa. She was taller then her and more of a straight line and not as curvy.
"You look beautiful" Pippa whispered looking Hecate up and down. "I heard you had an amazing entrance" she teased.
Hecate chuckled at first "yes...well nothing compared to wearing the wrong color at a Silver Gala" her voice became serious as the two girls locked eyes with one another. Pippa was a bit unsure what to say as the music started to play. Silence passed while both girls watched fellow students chat and have fun with other pupils from other schools. This was the year Cackles was hosting the main event.
"Did you apply at WeirdSister college" Pippa questioned breaking the silence.
"I've recieved my acceptance letter, already" Hecate added feeling proud of herself. WeirdSister college was hard to get into, and she knew that her gift with magic would pay off.
"Me too...oh Hiccup...it will be just like Cackles" Pippa squeaked as her hands grasped Hecate's. Hecate couldn't hide the shock from her face, Pippa was ok at magic, she wasn't terrible. But Hecate couldn't understand how the witch before her could possibly be accepted. She did not want to believe that they would continue college together.
"Joy" Hardbroom added with no emotion pulling her hands from Pippa. She noticed that Pippa's nails were gold matching the dress she wore.
"I bet you are going for potions" Pippa teased. Hecate nodded never asking Pippa what her major was.
"Would you like tea" a young first year asked. The Silver Gala were for fifth years only but certain first years were requested to serve everyone. Hecate looked down at the young Hallow that stood before her. Shaking her head.
Pippa smiled at the girl "No thanks, Ursula" the young girl walked toward a group of wizards. Hecate watched Pippa glance at the wizards that were eyeing them.
"Well they look dashing"
Hecate looked unamused at the boys before shrugging her shoulders "Go meet them" thinking it would allow Pippa to leave her alone. Pippa shook her head "Oh no, I couldn't" she giggled as she gave them a subtle wave. Hecate rolled her eyes. Watching Pippa flirt was making Hecate uncomfortable. She needed to escape the situation before it would become a group conversation.
The fifth year took it upon herself to leave Pippa alone since the Wizards were making their way toward the blonde. Hecate walked toward the double doors planning to escape an event that she started to feel overshadow at.
"May I ask where you are headed, Hardbroom" Ada asked. The headmistress had a silver cloak on, while her face wore a warm smile. Hecate couldn't help but return the smile "To study" she retorted. The pair definitely been thru a lot in the past but Hecate was determined to do right by her wrong. Studying to become the best witch that she could be
"Preparing for WeirdSister College, I heard you recieved a perfect mark on your potion requirement"
Hecate was proud of the achievement that she couldn't help but beam. Feeling she earned her spot within the walls of WeirdSister, she could'nt help but feel Pippa did not deserve a spot.
"Yes, my goal is to learn more and excel" magic came easy to Hecate that when she applied herself more, her powers grew and she became stronger.
"I can not wait my dear" Ada added before she allowed Hardbroom to leave the Silver Gala. Hecate walked up the wooden stairs toward her bedroom. Once she entered Hecate noticed all three of the bats were still out in the night sky. Allowing her hands to slowly wipe her makeup off, using a black cloth. She couldn't help but notice the ruby red lipstick leaving a stain upon her lips. She never felt beautiful but for once she believed she could be. Hecate felt like she was wiping off the mask that she placed upon her face to be someone different just for this night. Even though Pippa ruined her entrance, the beginning was extraordinary. She did make a mark appearing in the middle of the dance floor.
"Hiccup" Pippa whispered as she slowly opened Hardbrooms bedroom door.
Hecate never turned to face the blonde but instead allowed her firm voice to exit as she continued to clean her face.
"What"
"Are you alright"
"Yes...I'm fine" Hecate lied. A lie she would hold for over thirty years until a brave future pupil would trick them into speaking about their past.
"Oh. Good...I was planning to introduce you to the Wizards...but you were gone"
"I do not need to meet foolish boys" she turned to look at Pippa.
"They are not all foolish"
"Foolish to me"
"Well I feel a lot of people are foolish to you" Pippa added.
"Indeed" Hecate replied not wanting to continue this conversation. But Pippa was correct, lately a lot of people were foolish in Hecate's opinion.
Pippa took a step forward as Hecate stood in the same spot. "We have a good bit of years at WeirdSister College together, can we start over...begin again...like old times..."
Hecate looked down at Pippa. She was much taller then her former friend. She wasn't sure on moving on. Though she wanted Pippa to get out of her room, pushing people away was something Hecate was making a habit.
"Maybe.." Hecate added. Pippa's smile lit up the room before she excitedly jumped up and down.
"Perfect" the bubbly fifth year gave Hecate a hug.
"You have to come downstairs and meet Northam, Simon Northman"
Hecate pushed away from the one sided hug as she started to comprehend the name. Of course she recgonized one of the most powerful family names in their magical world. Northam were known as amazing Wizards. A strong magical family.
"He's dreamy" Pippa piped up as she bit her bottom lip. It was as if the girl's thoughts went to the young Wizard and no longer in present time. Hecate rolled her brown eyes once again from Pippa's actions.
"I think I'll stay here...but you go along" Hecate felt like she had no need to meet Northam. Pippa left but still tried to convince Hecate to follow, the dark hair witch stood her ground.
Hardbroom was ready to start her new chapter at WeirdSister College, snapping her fingers she made the beautiful silver dress dissapear and she was in the traditional school night clothes, one last time. The new journey would begin next term.
Notes : Thanks for reading this! while I was typing the new chapter for Broken, this scene came to my mind. Not sure if I will continue with this, but it was a nice muse to use to help. Hecate Hardbroom is an amazing character and the friendship she has-had with Pippa is something I enjoyed watching on the show.
