Second Light

The blood moon night spilled into the cosy pub, where everything was tinted gold: amber cider in a glass, candlelight on mahogany, and ice blond hair falling over slate grey eyes. Sitting at the bar in companionable silence, Harry and Draco watched a tea-light play patterns on the countertop.

"Have I ever told you I'm in love with you?"

Taken aback, Harry turned to Draco, whose visage betrayed neither drunkenness nor falsehood. It wasn't a joke, he realised. His heart skipped a beat, Harry looked away from Draco and nursed his drink, all the while grasping at words in the dark.

"No. I... didn't know."

"Loquacious as always, I see." There was faint amusement in Draco's voice. "I'm not asking for anything. I just want you to know." Draco slid off the stool and leant forward, his warm breath teasing Harry's cheek like a prelude to a kiss. "Good night." And with an unreadable smile he departed.

Draco's words haunted Harry long after the haze of intoxication had faded. Whenever he thought about Draco, something inside him would stir awake. A spider thread, invisible yet keenly felt, coiled ever so tightly around his beating heart and would not let go.

Finis.
