FLASHBACK BEGINS.

EXT. CANADA MINISTRY OF DEFENCE, OTTAWA, ONTARIO - NOON

The large clock tower of the Parliament building in Ottawa, Canada's capital, looms over the pristine grassy lawn.

SUPERIMPOSE: CANADIAN NATIONAL MINISTRY OF DEFENCE, OTTAWA – 1969

WOLVERINE, dressed in a full suit and carrying a briefcase, walks up to the front door of the Ministry of Defence and goes inside.

INT. CANADA MINISTRY OF DEFENCE – RECEPTION – NOON

Large marble pillars line the walls of the Reception, matching the white marble floor. Wolverine steps inside and walks up to the Reception. He politely leans in over the large counter to the RECEPTIONIST.

WOLVERINE

Um, my name is Logan.

The Receptionist remains focused on her work, visually ignoring Wolverine.

WOLVERINE

I have an appointment with General Chasen.

The Receptionist suddenly looks up.

RECEPTIONIST

Oh! You're in the wrong place.

WOLVERINE

(Confused.) I was told the General would be here this morning.

RECEPTIONIST

Oh, he is. You need to go out the door, turn right, and go to the end of the hall. Go in through the door there. That's where General Chasen is.

WOLVERINE

(Smiles.) Thanks for your help. Have a good day.

Wolverine turns and heads out the door.

INT. CANADA MINISTRY OF DEFENCE – HALLWAY – NOON

Wolverine walks down the Hallway until he reaches the end. The door, like the rest of the hallway, is covered in solid oak wood. The only distinguishing feature of this door is that there is a sign on it. The sign has only one letter on it: H. Wolverine shrugs and steps inside.

INT. CANADA MINISTRY OF DEFENCE – DEPARTMENT H - RECEPTION – NOON

Wolverine steps inside and looks around. This Reception is noticeably smaller and more organic. The carpet is basic and unappealing. The walls have pictures of unnamed military officers and other important-looking people. Wolverine walks up to the desk.

WOLVERINE

Excuse me, I'm here to see General Chasen.

CHASEN

Ah! You must be Logan!

Wolverine turns to see Chasen standing behind him, and immediately stands at attention, saluting the General.

WOLVERINE

Sir! Reporting as ordered, sir.

CHASEN

At ease, soldier.

Chasen, dressed in full military uniform, walks up to Wolverine and shakes his hand.

CHASEN

I'm General Chasen. It's a pleasure to finally meet you. Please, step inside my office.

INT. CANADA MINISTRY OF DEFENCE – DEPARTMENT H – CHASEN'S OFFICE – NOON

Chasen's Office is brown. The walls have wood paneling. The desk, chairs, and bookcases are all made of wood. The blinds are uninteresting and brown. The picture frames are made of wood. The plant pots are also brown. In fact, the green of the leaves is the only element of a colour contrast there.

Chasen walks behind his desk and looks down at a series of files.

CHASEN

I've gone over your file, Logan. Your performance under the Weapon X program against the Nazis was beyond impressive. The reports we got from Captain Campbell show you to be a cunning, inventive warrior, and an intelligent soldier. (Picks up the top file, opens it, and flips through several pages.) In his words, "When given a mission, Mister X has demonstrated, on repeated occasions, innovative and abnormally sound tactical and logistical analysis. Furthermore, his hand-to-hand combat and weapons expertise is second to none. He has demonstrated level-headed thinking on the ground, easily able to adapt his strategies to counter any adversaries or obstacles previously unforeseen." (Looks up at Wolverine.) It goes on and on like this. (Smiles.) Jesus, I think he'd like you to marry his daughter and give him some grandchildren.

WOLVERINE

(Laughs.) Well, that's definitely tempting, but somehow I don't think you called me here to offer to chaperone.

CHASEN

(Laughs.) No, can't say that it is. I've got something even better!

WOLVERINE

(Smiles.) Oh really! Let me guess: YOUR daughter!

CHASEN

(Laughs loudly.) Oh no, no. Nothing that dangerous. I've got a job for you. Ottawa was impressed with your work in France, very impressed. They decided to put your services to special use in the Canadian military.

WOLVERINE

So you want me to enlist in the army? Become a GI?

CHASEN

Not exactly. Before I go any further, I need to remind you that everything said in here is classified.

WOLVERINE

Understood, sir.

CHASEN

Good. The Ministry's developed a new section, simply known as Department H. You might have noticed our impressive sign on the door coming in. Our function is to enlist people with… special talents, such as yourself, for special operations.

WOLVERINE

(Nods.) And, by "people with special talents", you mean mutants.

CHASEN

Exactly. See, Ottawa's not as bigoted and racist as other governments. We know that mutants exist, and that they, like everybody else, have something to contribute in the service of their king and country. The purpose of Department H is to get the best mutants on board for special ops missions. As advanced and sophisticated as our military equipment is, there are and always will be some things that mutants can do that normal humans can't. I've been assigned as the department's coordinator. Through me, and through Department H, you'll be operating in special ops missions involving national security.

WOLVERINE

What kind of ops are we talking about?

CHASEN

The kind dealing with extreme, direct threats to national security. You'll be involved in counterterrorism and responses to other threats to the stability of Canada, the West, and the world at large. You and your team will be operating similar to the US Black Ops and Navy SEALs teams, except much more advanced.

WOLVERINE

Team? I'll have a team? Sir, I don't really work-

CHASEN

Play well with others? Yeah I know. Campbell pointed that out as well, but he also noted you did a hell of a job with your partner. Must be an enhanced thing. We're hoping that'll continue with these guys.

WOLVERINE

(Intrigued.) Alright; am I team leader?

CHASEN

(Smiles.) Does that mean you're in?

Wolverine smiles.

FLASHBACK ENDS.

INT. CHANNEL 6 STUDIO – CHANNEL 6 NEWS – MAIN SET - AFTERNOON

ANCHORWOMAN

Good afternoon, America. We're so glad you're with us this afternoon, and we're going to bring you a breaking story. We're heading over to Framingham, Massachusetts, where US senator Robert Kelly is about to make an announcement. We take you live to Agatha Dang, who's live in Framingham right now. Agatha, are you there?

INT. FRAMINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS – FRAMINGHAM TOWN HALL – CONFERENCE ROOM - AFTERNOON

The Framingham Town Hall Conference Room is very small; it can hold perhaps fifty people comfortably. Despite this, the Room is packed with reporters, both from local and national agencies. There is a makeshift stage and podium along the back wall, and six noticeable security guards stand watch, keeping the reporters at bay.

DANG

Thank you. I'm here at the Framingham Town Hall, where Senator Robert Kelly has called a press conference to make an announcement. I'm almost certain that he'll be announcing his candidacy for leadership of the Republican party, and for president of the United States. He's been asked in recent weeks by reporters and people close to him, and has been, thus far, indecisive, not making an official confirmation, but not denying the possibility either. And he's called a conference in his home town of Framingham, which is what is usually done when a senator wishes to make such an announcement.

The din in the room suddenly kicks up, and KELLY, his family, and several aids enter the room and step up to the podium.

DANG

Oh! Senator Kelly has just arrived. We now take you live to hear what he has to say.

Kelly walks up to the podium, bathed in camera flashes, and stares at his notes nervously. After pausing for several moments, he speaks.

KELLY

Ladies and gentlemen of the press gathered here, friends and family who have come to show their support for me now, and to everyone watching at home, thank you for being here with me this afternoon. My fellow Americans, there has been a disturbing change sweeping this great nation of ours. Since America's creation, we have pledged ourselves to be a free nation, a prosperous nation, a nation in which you and your children can grow up in happiness, and secured in the notion that you will be safe, safe from the threat of violence from both abroad, and home. However, such security and such happiness come at a price. To make sure that we can maintain such security, constant vigilance and dedication must be maintained. It is the responsibility of the government to be constantly monitoring all threats, to reach out to those threats in their infancy, and nullify them, before they threaten the lives of our citizens. Recently, the current administration has begun to falter on this. It believes that our country is secure as it is; all the while organisations like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants wage a continuous and repeated war of terror upon the rest of us. But it isn't just Magneto and the Brotherhood that's the problem. It's the general threat of mutants, the idea that their powers allow them to breach all our security measures like they were nonexistent, to bypass all our means of defense, leaving us exposed and vulnerable to any number of means of our destruction. And it is naïve to assume that mutants have a sense of morality so superior to our own that there aren't those among them who would use their powers to their advantage, and at the expense of our security and prosperity. And yet, this administration seems more concerned with protecting the rights of these mutants, no matter how destructive and violent they may be, than with protecting the rest of the country. Now, I've always considered this to be an unacceptable and obscene violation of that same safety I just spoke of, but I've tried to be silent, to support my president and have faith in his ability to lead this nation. However, I can no longer do that. I can no longer stand idly by while our children hide in their homes, frightened of what Magneto, the Brotherhood, or any mutant deranged on his own power might do today, tomorrow, next week, or next year. So, as of this moment, I am officially announcing my candidacy for leader of the Republican party, with the intention to be the next president of the United States.

Immediately, reporters jump to their feet, and a flurry of questions bombard Kelly. A photographing frenzy erupts. Kelly waves them down to be quiet.

KELLY

As your leader, I will not allow such betrayal of the American people to continue. I will not allow mutants to move about this nation unchecked and unregistered. This is not a call for the enslavement of mutants or anything even remotely close to such a notion. This is simply a demand that we know what mutants in this country are capable of, and understanding how we can protect ourselves against mutants who would use their extraordinary abilities against us.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – RECREATION ROOM - AFTERNOON

The Recreation Room is empty, except for STORM, who watches Kelly on television, fixated on his words.

KELLY

As your leader, I promise you swift, decisive action to make this country great again, for all Americans. Thank you.

There is an immediate thunder of din and discussion from the various reporters on hand. Storm watches, frowning, as ICEMAN walks into the room.

ICEMAN

Hey Big O, what's going on?

Storm remains fixated on the television.

STORM

Senator Kelly has officially announced his intention to run for the leadership of the Republican party, and eventually the post of president of the United States.

Iceman turns at the television.

ICEMAN

(Smiles.) No shit. (Laughs.) Good luck. That dicknuts will never get elected.

STORM

I am not so sure. He has a sizable following across the country, as demonstrated from the latest polls. He could definitely be a frontrunner for party leadership, perhaps even a threat to President Conroy's platform.

ICEMAN

O, you gotta be kidding me! You really think this guy has a shot? He's the biggest racist in the country! People won't stand for that shit!

STORM

Anti-mutant sentiment has been steadily on the rise over the last several months. The efforts of Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants have done much to fan the flames of hatred and prejudice. Thanks to him, and a subtle campaign of anti-mutant propaganda, the American people have good reason to fear mutants. Mutants like Magneto undermine our efforts at every turn, and make our goals of peaceful coexistence that much harder.

ICEMAN

(Nods in understanding.) Someone wanna explain to me one more time why we don't just kill him? That fucker talks about how he's helping mutants; everything he's done just makes our lives even more miserable than they already are!

STORM

(Looks at Iceman.) You find your life miserable, Bobby?

ICEMAN

(Suddenly backpedalling) You know what I mean! It's all because of the Professor. He's got a soft spot for Magneto bin Laden and his army of douche bags. Maybe all those Friends of Humanity sheep have a point. Maybe Xavier's the reason why we have to worry about Magneto.

STORM

Magneto, like it or not, is a symbol to many mutants, not just in the United States, but worldwide. He symbolises the desire to rise up against our oppressors and exact vengeance upon them. This appeals to many mutants, especially those who have been the victims of prejudice and extreme violence stemming from that prejudice. You, more than anyone else, should appreciate that idea.

Iceman nods in understanding.

STORM

He has the ear of many mutants in America. If he were destroyed, he would become a martyr, and his death might trigger a reaction even more violent than his current acts of terrorism. Remember the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles?

ICEMAN

Yeah I know. Even if the guy was breaking the law at the time, the violence that came afterwards was A LOT worse than anything King would've been capable of.

STORM

Exactly. Professor Xavier feels that Magneto is far more valuable alive than dead. His voice carries influence on the mutant population; many will follow where he leads. If he could be made to understand our point of view, his followers would agree, and it could help end all mutant-related violence in this country.

Iceman shakes his head. He understands Storm's point, but cannot believe the complexities of politicking.

ICEMAN

This is bullshit. When did our lives get so complicated, O?

STORM

(Smiles.) Bobby, we are mutants. Our lives were born complicated.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – AFTERNOON

Wolverine closes his eyes, concentrating and taking deep, slow breaths. Slowly, his blades retract into his hand as he opens his eyes and starts to head towards the school.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – PROFESSOR X'S OFFICE - AFTERNOON

CYCLOPS cleans up some of the files on Professor X's desk when EMMA knocks on the door.

CYCLOPS

(Remains focused on the files.) Yeah?

The door opens and Emma steps in.

EMMA

Scott, how are you doing?

CYCLOPS

(Shrugs.) I'm fine. Why do you ask?

Emma slowly walks towards Cyclops.

EMMA

Well, it's been an unimaginable day for you. You were there when the Professor was shot. You probably also saw Magneto kill his attacker. And then Kevin also left today. You've…you've been under a great deal of stress. I…I just wanted to make sure you were alright.

CYCLOPS

(Smiles.) You been reading my thoughts? I've already got one telepath to keep an eye on; don't need another.

EMMA

(Suddenly nervous.) No, I wouldn't do that! (Smiles.) Scott, you know I'd never invade your mind like that. (Smiles playfully.) As much as I'd want to get to know all your dirty little secrets, your…hidden fantasies…

Cyclops, obviously oblivious, continues working on the files. Emma, noticing, goes back to her first card: sympathy.

EMMA

It's just that, with the Professor unable to work, you're in charge. Seeing the Professor wounded like that, must have been terrifying.

CYCLOPS

Yeah, it was. (Shakes his head.) It was…it was horrifying. (Looks up at Emma.) I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe someone would just walk up to the front door of a school and shoot the Professor like that! I mean, who does that! How the hell can someone… (Looks back down at his files.

EMMA

Well clearly, the man was deranged and confused. Who knows what was going through his mind at the time.

CYCLOPS

(Looks back up at Emma, frustrated.) Just the same, a deranged man walked up to the front door, in broad daylight, pulled out a gun, and shot the Professor point-blank. If his hand wasn't shaking so much, he might've had some aim and actually killed him! If Magneto hadn't killed him- (Stops, suddenly realising what Magneto had done.) Wait, Magneto killed him. Shit, I didn't even realise it until now. I mean, I knew, obviously of course, but it didn't even occur to me that-

EMMA

Scott, relax. It's okay. This is what I mean. You've been thrown into the role of leader, not just of the team, but of the school. And under very…frightening conditions. Obviously, you've been in this role before, but never like this. It's a lot of stress. I… (Plays with her hair.) …I just want you to know I'm here if you want to chat.

CYCLOPS

Thanks, Emma. But right now, I'm looking at the problem. Someone walked up to our front door – armed with a gun and with the intention to use it. Nobody saw him coming; nobody sensed his intentions. For all we knew, he could've been carrying a bomb! The security we've got in place isn't doing the job! He's the first, and I bet he won't be the last! For all we know, there's more of them coming up the steps right now!

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – AFTERNOON

Wolverine slowly climbs the stairs towards the door.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – PROFESSOR X'S OFFICE - AFTERNOON

CYCLOPS

We need to scan everyone who comes here from now on. We can't simply have faith that whoever comes here doesn't have hostile intentions. We need to know if the next person who shows up at our door is going to try and shoot or stab us.

The doorbell rings. Cyclops looks up towards the door. Emma, worried, glances towards the door, and then back at Cyclops, who motions for her to telepathically scan him. Emma closes her eyes and concentrates.

EMMA

There's…it's so clouded. His intentions are…I'm not sure. Good…I think, but…but there's…there's a dark side. He's… (Opens her eyes, suddenly alarmed and terrified.) …he's dangerous, and he's here for the Professor!

Cyclops takes his glasses off and puts them into his pocket. He then reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his visor.

CYCLOPS

(Puts on his visor.) Get the others. Make sure the children are secure. I'll see what this is about.

Cyclops marches past Emma towards the door when she suddenly grabs him.

EMMA

Scott! (Stares straight into Cyclops' visor.) Be careful.

Cyclops nods, turns, and heads for the door.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – AFTERNOON

The door opens and Cyclops eyes Wolverine, arms folded. At first, he doesn't see him, but then looks down at Wolverine's small stature. Wolverine stands there, shaking slightly and twitching, like someone overstimulated by too much caffeine.

CYCLOPS

Can I help you?

WOLVERINE

(Twitching anxiously, confused.) I'm, um…I'm looking for Charles Xavier.

CYCLOPS

He's not available right now. May I ask what this is about?

Wolverine suddenly changes from disoriented and confused to predatorily focused.

WOLVERINE

(Snarls.) No, you may not. Now, where is he? I need to talk to him.

CYCLOPS

(Annoyed and apprehensive.) Hey, what part of "not available" are you having trouble with? Now, get off the premises peacefully, or I'll have you removed!

Wolverine cracks his neck angrily.

WOLVERINE

Yeah?

With lightning speed, Wolverine grabs Cyclops by the shirt and tosses him over his shoulder. Cyclops flies towards the flight of stairs leading down to the Driveway. As he does, he fires an optic blast at Wolverine. It hits him in the chest. Caught off guard, he flies in through the door and into the Main Building.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Wolverine flies through the air, slamming hard into the back wall. Stunned, he falls hard to the ground. As he sits up he shakes his head.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – AFTERNOON

Cyclops tumbles backwards down the stairs, landing in a heap. Slowly, he gets up, shaking his head. He then recovers and gets to his feet.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Meanwhile, Wolverine leaps to his feet, his animal instincts kicking in. He looks around frantically, and then something catches his nose. He sniffs several times, and then runs off down the Hallway, past the old man, who quickly scuttles to the side.

Just as he disappears, Storm hurriedly heads into the Main Hallway, followed by Iceman and POLARIS. They're met by Cyclops as stumbles into the Hallway.

CYCLOPS

(Anxious.) Where is he?

STORM

(Looks around, confused.) Where is who?

CYCLOPS

Shit! Get the others! We've got an intruder! Lorna, Bobby: sound general quarters. Get the kids into their dorms and lock them down. Storm, get the others and get out the radios. We need to secure the Professor; this guy's come looking for him. I'll keep looking. Go!

Cyclops, Storm, Polaris, and Iceman each turn and run off in different directions. Wolverine, sitting silently in the rafters in the roof, watches them all run off. Once they're gone, he leaps down onto the floor, crouches, and looks around. First, he looks down one end of the Hallway, then turns and runs down the other end, following Iceman.

Iceman cautiously walks down the Hallway towards the Boys' Dormitory. Every few steps he glances around him. His phone rings. He takes it out and answers it.

ICEMAN

Bobby here. (Pauses, listening.) Nope, I got nothing here. It's quiet. I'm on my way to the Boys' Dorm. (Pauses, listening.) Got it. Give you a call when I'm done.

Iceman hangs up, and then dials Polaris.

ICEMAN

(Smiles.) Hey babe, anything on your end?

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – GIRLS' DORMITORY – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Polaris walks through the Main Hallway, making sure all the girls are in their rooms and their doors are closed.

POLARIS

Hey there, nothing exciting here. Do you know what's going on?

ICEMAN (ON THE PHONE)

I don't have a clue.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

ICEMAN

Some asshole's apparently running around here. Maybe Scott's playing some stupid joke on us.

POLARIS (ON THE PHONE)

That doesn't sound like Scott.

ICEMAN

No, suppose not. Guess there really is an intruder. Don't know what he wants, but he'd better not run into me. I'm kind of itching for a fight now.

POLARIS (ON THE PHONE)

Hey, don't do anything stupid alright? We don't know what we're up against.

ICEMAN

Oh please! It's ONE guy! How much trouble could he be? He's probably another one of those crazies, like the guy that took a shot at the Professor. Don't worry baby, I got this one. Hey… (Whispers.) …by the way, am I gonna see you tonight?

POLARIS (ON THE PHONE)

Of course!

ICEMAN

(Laughs, then whispers.) Good girl. And you're gonna wear that thing I like, right? (Pauses, listening, and then laughs.) Hey, hey! I'm only doing that if you promise to wear the thing; you know the one!

Iceman hears something, and comes to a stop, suddenly nervous.

ICEMAN

Hey, I'm gonna call you back in a bit. Just heard something.

Iceman hangs up, slowly puts his phone away, and transforms. He cautiously walks towards a turning point in the corridor. As he does, Wolverine descends from the roof and lands silently behind him. With Iceman still oblivious, Wolverine tries to step forward, but is stopped unexpectedly. He looks down at his feet, which are surrounded by a thick layer of ice up to his shins. Surprised, Wolverine tries, in vain, to silently break free.

ICEMAN

(Smiles and turns around to face Wolverine.) Damn, you suck at this! Didn't expect that, eh! That's what happens when you mess with the X-Men, especially the Iceman!

Iceman points at Wolverine, and fires several streams of ice at him. Wolverine is covered, starting with his feet, in ice. Iceman encases his entire body, but stops short of covering Wolverine's head.

ICEMAN

That's better. (Looks Wolverine up and down.) Wow! You are one furry little munchkin! You remind me of the ugly one from the Wizard of Oz-

Wolverine's claws slice through the ice around his hand, smashing it into pieces. Iceman is stunned and instantly terrified.

ICEMAN

Whoa! What the fuck!

Wolverine gets his hands free, and then his arms, and finally smashes through all the ice. He uses his claws to smash through the ice holding his feet. Iceman backs away, terrified.

FLASHBACK BEGINS.

EXT. MILITARY INSTALLATION – EVENING

ICEMAN

STAY BACK!

Iceman quickly throws up a wall of ice, but Sabretooth's sheer bulky stature easily smashes through it, crashing into Iceman and sending them both to the ground. The ice deflects Sabretooth slightly, and he tumbles and rolls away. Iceman, stunned momentarily, shakes it off, and quickly jumps to his feet. Sabretooth also leaps to his feet and charges, roaring. He tackles Iceman, lifting him up and charging him into the wall. Sabretooth slams Iceman into the wall with so much force that he knocks the wind out of him. Iceman drops to his knees, unable to breathe.

FLASHBACK ENDS.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

ICEMAN

(Panicking.) Jesus! STAY BACK!

Iceman fires a solid blast of ice, but Wolverine leaps up against the wall, dodging the blast, and lunges at Iceman, knocking him down. Iceman flips Wolverine over onto his back, and then lands on him. Without hesitation, he starts wailing viciously on Wolverine.

ICEMAN

(Furious.) YOU! WON'T! GET! ME! AGAIN!

Wolverine blocks each punch, retracting his claws.

ICEMAN

(Swinging furiously.) YOU! FUCKING! ANIMAL! I'LL! KILL! YOU!

Wolverine kicks Iceman off, sending him tumbling. As he does, he rolls backwards, getting to his feet right beside Iceman. He quickly grabs Iceman by the throat, wrapping him in a suffocation lock. Iceman grabs onto Wolverine's arm, trying to free himself. Rapidly losing consciousness, he struggles to get free. He starts freezing Wolverine's arm, his resistance to pain and discomfort lets him keep his grip, and Iceman passes out before he can finish. Iceman goes limp in Wolverine's hands. He gently lowers him to the ground and looks around, checking to see if anyone else was nearby. He then picks up Iceman, tossing him over his shoulder, and heads towards the nearest equipment closet.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – GIRLS' DORMITORY – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Polaris continues patrolling the halls. She tries dialing Iceman's number, but he does not pick up. Instead, it goes to voicemail.

POLARIS

(Worried.) Bobby! Pick up! Let me know what's going on! Bobby! Come on, it's not funny!

Polaris, noticeably shaken up and fearful, hangs up and dials Cyclops' number.

POLARIS

(Frantic.) Scott! Bobby's not picking up his phone! I talked to him about ten minutes ago – he was on his way to the Boys' Dorm, but I don't know if he got there – and, and he said he heard something there. So, um, he hung up, and he hasn't called back. And I've been trying to call him. I called him, like, four times, and he hasn't picked up! I don't know what's happened to him, and maybe the intruder got to him! I don't know what to do!

CYCLOPS (ON THE PHONE)

Okay, okay. Lorna, remain calm.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

CYCLOPS

I'm in the Main Building. I'll go and check it out. Let me know if you hear from him.

Cyclops hangs up, and picks up his pace as he goes down the hall.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - AFTERNOON

Emma walks into the Medical Bay, where BEAST, JEAN, and ANGEL are discussing Rogue, who is still unconscious on a bed beside Professor X's bed.

EMMA

What is the Professor's status? We have an intruder, and Cerebro could probably track him.

BEAST

An intruder? What sort, and what do you suppose-

EMMA

I don't have time to explain, Hank! Can the Professor be woken up or not?

BEAST

(Nervous.) Emma, regretfully, the Professor is still indisposed. His system is still flooded with painkillers and sedatives. Even if I were to wake him – which is inadvisable at the moment – he would be in no condition to use Cerebro at the moment.

EMMA

(Huffs.) Alright. I will do it then. Scott's orders are to protect the Professor. Apparently, the intruder's after him.

JEAN

Does he know about the Base?

EMMA

I don't know. But the Professor has been identified as the target. Keep a close eye on him.

Emma turns and leaves. Jean looks at Beast, frightened. Beast in turn looks at Angel, who turns around and looks down at Professor X, who remains unconscious on his bed.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – GIRLS' DORMITORY – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Meanwhile, Polaris continues walking down the Hallway. She is no longer checking the doors; instead, she is focused on her phone, sending repeated text messages to Iceman. The sound of the wood floor creaking ahead of her causes her to jump, startled. She stares ahead, terrified. Seeing nothing unusual, she slowly creeps forward. After a few steps she stops, closes her eyes, and takes several slow, deep breaths to calm herself. She then opens her eyes, and advances forward. As she does, JUBILEE and SHADOWCAT step into the Hallway. Startled, they scream. Polaris screams as well. She stops and tries to catch her breath.

POLARIS

Jesus, girls! What the hell are you doing out of your rooms! You were told to close your door and lock it!

JUBILEE

We…we wanted to help! We figured we're the X-Men in training, and here's our chance to join the team!

SHADOWCAT

Besides… (Looks at Jubilee, and then back at Polaris.) We, um…we don't like being…confined…at the moment…um…

POLARIS

(Nods, still panting.) I understand. Okay look, keep absolutely quiet, and stay close to me!

Polaris turns and starts heading back down the Hallway, with Jubilee and Shadowcat nervously behind her. She swallows hard, trying to remain calm, if not for herself then for the girls. Nervously, she looks right to left, then left to right.

As Polaris slowly walks forward, Wolverine drops down from the ceiling, landing right behind Polaris and in front of Jubilee and Shadowcat. Before anyone can react, Wolverine swings his arms backwards, knocking Jubilee and Shadowcat completely off their feet. Jubilee lands flat on her back, stunned. Shadowcat, also stunned, falls through the floor and disappears. Dazed, she plummets through the second storey floor and lands hard on the ground floor, slamming her head on the floor and knocking herself out.

Polaris spins on her heels to face Wolverine, shrieking in terror. Quickly, Wolverine buries his forearm into Polaris' throat and grabs the back of her head, pushing her neck deeper onto his forearm. Polaris stares at him, wide-eyed and unable to make any noise. He stares directly into Polaris' eyes with a savage precision, snarling and yet completely calm. Polaris points the palms of her hands towards Wolverine. Instantly Wolverine, still holding Polaris, is sent flying through the air. He slams hard into the ceiling, his head hitting first. The two of them instantly fall to the floor, Wolverine landing on top of Polaris and knocking her out. He quickly rolls off of her.

Meanwhile, Jubilee slowly sits up, still stunned. Before she can get up, Wolverine runs up to her, grabs her by the collar, and hauls her to her feet. Jubilee breaks out in hysterics, scream and crying.

JUBILEE

(Screaming.) PLEASE! PLEASE DON'T HURT ME! PLEASE!

Jubilee continues to scream, paralysed with fear. The last person to grab her in such a manner was a guard on Genosha, and it felt eerily similar. Wolverine stares at her, watching her wriggle in fear. Slowly, he calms down, eases his grip, and backs away. Jubilee continues to freak out, so Wolverine gently pulls her towards him. He hugs her close, wrapping his arms around her tightly.

WOLVERINE

I'm…I'm sorry. It's alright. I'm… (Pauses.) …please don't cry.

Jubilee, tears streaming down her face, finds herself actually feeling oddly safe and welcome in Wolverine's arms. Maybe it's the soothing whisper of his deep voice, or maybe it's the strong, masculine arms around her, but whatever it is, it gradually calms her down. Once she is relaxed, Wolverine gently releases her and steps back, and then looks down at Polaris.

WOLVERINE

She's not dead. Nobody is. This is a non-lethal low-resistance quotient operation…um…I mean, I'm not here to kill anyone. I, um…I need help. I need to find Charles Xavier. (Looks around, seemingly confused.) I have to go now. (Looks back at Polaris, and then back at Jubilee.) Please…um…take care of…I'm sorry…must go…

Wolverine slowly turns and casually walks down the Hallway, while Jubilee, more confused now than anything, leans against the wall, watching him.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Storm calmly walks down the Hallway, heading towards the secret elevator leading to the X-Men Base.

Wolverine watches Storm from the rafters as she presses the secret button, opening the elevator door. His eyes widen when he sees the secret elevator. With complete silence and lightning quick speed, Wolverine drops down, swinging from the support beam.

Just as Storm is about to step inside, Wolverine lands behind her. Before she can react, Wolverine grabs her in the familiar suffocation hold. It takes only a few seconds to knock her out. She her eyes close, Wolverine slowly lowers her to the floor. As soon as she is on the floor, a powerful optic blast hits him in the side of the head, sending him flying down the Hallway. He hits the ground hard, sliding across the floor for several metres. He comes to a stop, rolls over, and instinctively hides behind a nearby wall.

Cyclops emerges from his sniper spot and slowly walks down the hall, his hand on his visor.

CYCLOPS

Target located. All units: converge on my location: Main Building, ground level. Units incapacitated. Situation urgent.

Wolverine shakes off the latest hit, and slowly stands up. He stands ready to pounce on Cyclops as soon as he gets into range. As he does, Wolverine swings his leg out to roundhouse him. Cyclops, predicting the attack, catches the leg and uses it to swing Wolverine around, tossing him across the floor.

WOLVERINE

YOU!

Wolverine rolls over backwards, getting to his feet. Snarling, he lunges at Cyclops, who fires his optic beam. Wolverine leaps over the beam, side-kicking Cyclops in the forehead. He is only stunned, but it is enough of an opening for Wolverine to attack. He delivers a fierce elbow to Cyclops' jaw, knocking him to the floor. Wolverine instantly pounces on him. Growling ferociously, Wolverine lands hard on Cyclops' chest, knocking the wind out of him. His right hand grabs Cyclops by the throat, while his left winds up to punch him. As the hand comes back, his claws extend. Just as Wolverine is about to bury his claws into Cyclops, Beast grabs his hand and hauls him off.

BEAST

Logan, my old friend! Why are you attacking us? What have we done which may have caused offense?

Wolverine stares at Beast, partially recognising him but also clearly confused and disoriented.

WOLVERINE

Wha…um… (Pauses, trying to remember Beast.) Ha…Hen…Hen-ry.

Beast smiles.

WOLVERINE

Your name…is…Hen-ry.

BEAST

Yes, old friend! We met several months ago, in Vancouver!

Cyclops, confused, stands up.

BEAST

You helped my friend Kevin and I out of a rather precarious situation. You and I also met once more at the United States congress; however, that time it was with Professor Xavier.

WOLVERINE

Professor…Xavier…X…I, um…Professor…I, um…

Wolverine closes his eyes and shakes his head, obviously wrestling with his thoughts.

BEAST

Pardon?

WOLVERINE

Must…find…Xavier… (Opens his eyes and stares at Beast.) XAVIER!

Wolverine spins around with lightning speed, punching Cyclops square across the jaw with full force. At the same time, he side-kicks Beast across the jaw, stunning him and knocking him backwards. Howling and snarling, he dives through the air, both claws extending, flying towards Cyclops.

JEAN

STOP!

Wolverine freezes in mid-air, confused. He looks around, as though checking to see if he had snagged some invisible wires. He starts swimming and clawing at the air, howling and growling.

Jean emerges from behind a wall, her hand pointed towards Wolverine. He sees her, and instantly calms down, awash with tranquility. He stares at her affectionately – and confused for feeling such a way - for several seconds. Jean stares back at Wolverine, concentrating on her task.

WOLVERINE

What…what's going-

JEAN

He's…heavy!

Several tranquilizer darts hit Wolverine in the back. He looks behind him.

BEAST

(Holding a tranquiliser gun.) Forgive me, my friend.

Wolverine loses consciousness, and goes limp in mid-air. Beast and Storm, who has just recovered, slowly walk towards Wolverine, who is still hovering, limp, in the air.

CYCLOPS

(Keeps his hand on his visor.) Stay back. May be a trick. Emma?

Emma walks up, closes her eyes, and concentrates.

EMMA

No, he's unconscious. You can release him.

Cyclops looks at Jean and nods. Jean slowly lowers Wolverine to the ground.

CYCLOPS

Get the restraints on him. Take him downstairs and lock him up. Hank, get Warren to help you restrain him once you're downstairs. Jean, go with them. Ororo, you alright?

STORM

I am slightly shaken up, but otherwise unhurt.

CYCLOPS

Good. Emma, go find Lorna. I'll go find Bobby. Neither of them are picking up their phones.

JEAN

Could they be dead?

CYCLOPS

I doubt it. I don't think he came here to kill us. You saw him.

Beast puts several restraining devices on Wolverine.

CYCLOPS

He could've easily killed Ororo if he wanted to, but he didn't. I'm betting Bobby and Lorna are alright, too. Thanks for being our decoy, by the way, Ororo.

STORM

(Rubs her head.) The important thing is that the threat has been neutralised. Who is he?

Cyclops shakes his head.

CYCLOPS

I don't know.

Beast looks up at Cyclops.

BEAST

I am afraid I do.

Cyclops folds his arms. Beast looks back down at Wolverine, who is still unconscious.

INT. CREED'S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – EVENING

CREED anxiously paces back and forth in his Living Room, staring at his cell phone, while Mrs. Creed stands in the doorway to the Kitchen.

MRS. CREED

Has he called yet?

CREED

No. I've sent him text messages.

Creed stops and turns to face Mrs. Creed.

CREED

I didn't want to call him, in case he was hiding from Xavier's people. But he hasn't checked in at all.

MRS. CREED

Call him then. Maybe he'll pick up. (Turns and heads back into the Kitchen.)

Creed looks at his phone for a moment, and then dials the number for the Spy.

INT. NEW YORK POLICE DEPARTMENT – INVESTIGATION LABORATORY – EVENING

The Investigation Laboratory is divided into several independent labs, each filled with elaborate equipment and computer systems. The lab Davis is working in has a large flat table in the center of the room, which is lined with various computers and scanners.

DAVIS applies talcum powder to the handle of the gun identified as the Spy's murder weapon. He then brushes the excess talcum away as GILL walks in. He is carrying a sealed bag with a cell phone in it.

GILL

Hey, you got anything?

DAVIS

(Shakes his head.) The only prints on it are those of the victim. But they're not consistent with the shot.

GILL

What do you mean?

DAVIS

Well, the only prints I'm finding are his, but they're not dispersed in a way to confirm he put the gun under his chin and pulled the trigger.

GILL

Maybe the gun fell out of his hand, bounced backwards, and caught him in the wrong place at the wrong time.

DAVIS

(Shakes his head.) No. There's GSR under his chin. If it fell, we'd see the residue on his shoe, if we saw it at all. What do you have?

GILL

This is the vic's cell phone. He's been getting a bunch of text messages all afternoon. Wanted your permission to open it up.

Davis takes the phone from Gill and examines it through the bag.

DAVIS

You know who's messaging him?

GILL

No, the display doesn't show the name. Just says "new text message".

DAVIS

Alright, take a look at it, but-

The phone suddenly starts ringing. Davis looks down at the phone. On the display, it shows Creed's name and his cell phone number.

DAVIS

It's Creed! Creed's a friend of his.

GILL

You think something's going down?

DAVIS

Either that or something's about to. Let's go.

Davis puts down the phone and immediately heads for the door. Gill follows.

INT. CREED'S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – EVENING

Creed hangs up his cell phone.

CREED

He didn't pick up. They must've gotten him.

MRS. CREED

So, what are you going to do about it? If they've got him, who knows what they're doing to him. We can't just leave him to those…monsters.

Creed pauses for a moment, thinking. He then looks at his phone again, and dials a new number. The person on the other end picks up.

CREED

Father Winchester, the plan is a go. Spread the word.

Creed hangs up and looks at Mrs. Creed.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - EVENING

Professor X, Rogue, and Wolverine all lie on beds beside one another, unconscious. Rogue and Wolverine remain heavily sedated, as well as restrained.

Angel walks up to Professor X's brain monitor. His brain waves begin to return to alpha and beta waves. He turns to look down at PROFESSOR X, as he slowly opens his eyes and groggily looks around.

PROFESSOR X

Where…

ANGEL

Take it easy, Professor. You were injured. Hank and his dermal regenerator fixed you up, but we kept you under until the process was fully complete.

PROFESSOR X

Magneto…he…

ANGEL

He's gone. He left us a gift.

Angel points over to Rogue. Professor X slowly lifts his head up and looks beside him, to Rogue.

PROFESSOR X

Yes…I, um…I remember. She…she needs our help. (Glances at Wolverine.) What about him?

ANGEL

(Shakes his head.) We don't know who he is.

Professor stares at Wolverine, worried.

PROFESSOR X

I do.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM - EVENING

Beast, standing in front of a monitor, turns to face the others.

BEAST

His name is Logan. Kevin and I first encountered him during our symposium in Vancouver. It was he who aided us when we were accosted by several anti-mutant sympathisers during our last evening there. When we spoke to him, he identified himself as an officer working for the Canadian government. However, he would not say more about what his specific function was. Based on what we now know, one probable conclusion is that he is involved in Special Forces of some sort.

Cyclops is the only other person standing. Storm and Jean are sitting upright in their chairs. Emma and Polaris are sitting back, relaxed. Iceman is leaning back in his chair, emphasising its reclining feature.

BEAST

Fortune was indeed with us that evening. Had Logan not intervened when he did and in the manner in which he did, we would certainly not have escaped.

CYCLOPS

Aside from what he told you, what else do you know? How would describe his demeanour? Was it anything like what we saw today?

BEAST

Quite the opposite, actually. When we first spoke to him in the bar, he was quite calm, rational, and even pleasant. Despite his now-apparent prowess at close-range combat, he made every attempt to dissolve the situation through communication. It was only when it became apparent that our assailants were no longer satisfied with verbal abuse and instead decided to engage in physical abuse that Logan engaged them.

ICEMAN

Maybe he's…you know…a psycho. One of those people who's super-normal ninety-nine percent of the time, but you look at them the wrong way and BAM! Serial killer with torsos in the basement freezer.

POLARIS

That's disgusting, Bobby!

BEAST

And also seemingly unlikely. I encountered him once more, in Washington, DC, this time with the Professor. We were preparing for the Professor's segment during the discourse on the Mutant Registration Act when he noticed us and approached. He bore much of the same, familiar personality traits I had noticed in Vancouver. It seems highly unlikely that he could harbour two such contrasting personalities so…cohesively.

STORM

What was he doing in Washington?

BEAST

He was dispatched by the Canadian government to monitor discussions on the MRA. He said that they were very interested in seeing how we responded to the proposal. Perhaps their government was looking at our reaction to see whether they should pass similar legislation in the future.

CYCLOPS

(Shakes his head.) This isn't making any sense. You're telling me this guy was a calm, sensible person. Nothing we've seen today indicates any of that. Clearly, something's not right in his head. (Turns to Emma.) Emma, what did you sense when you read his mind?

EMMA

Very little. There was a great deal of confusion, more than I'm used to. Thoughts were rush into the forefront of his mind, and then disappear just as quickly. It was hard to get a positive lock on any one thought or train of thoughts. It was as though several different minds were locked in a struggle with one another for dominance. I wasn't able to discover his exact purpose, but the one constant thought which remained was an intense, incomprehensible need to see the Professor.

JEAN

What do you mean, 'incomprehensible'?

EMMA

His mind never stayed on one thought too long, so it was impossible to understand his logic. It was as if he knew, more than anything, that he wanted to see the Professor, but didn't know why.

BEAST

Emma, you suspect that there were perhaps several personalities within Logan, and that each one was competing with the others for establishment. Is it possible he is suffering from a sort of Multiple Personality Disorder?

EMMA

Not in the traditional sense. There is definite evidence of some sort of mental trauma, but I can't say what it was or how it affected him.

STORM

(Looks at Cyclops.) Scott, you were the first to encounter him. Did he exhibit these behaviours then?

CYCLOPS

Not sure, to be honest. When I opened the door and saw him, he looked dishevelled, confused, and disoriented. I went back and looked at the CCTV footage as he walked up the Driveway. Same kind of behaviour. He said he needed to see the Professor. The way he talked to me…it sounded as though being polite and civil was…was a strain for him, like he was holding back more…animalistic instincts. But when I told him to beat it, his entire body language changed. Suddenly, he wasn't dishevelled or confused. He was focused, organised, and determined. And look at how he behaved once he was inside: methodical, calculated, efficient. He dropped Bobby and Lorna without a sound.

ICEMAN

Hey now! Wait a minute! This super-ninja here didn't get the drop on me! I stopped him cold in his tracks – literally! (Everyone looks at Iceman, doubting his story.) (Mumbles.) He just…he was just a lot stronger and faster than I thought is all.

POLARIS

Well, I'll fully admit he got the drop on me. I was with Kitty and Jubilee when he got me. Knocked the two girls out and then got me before I could do anything. Those poor girls!

CYCLOPS

Whatever. The point is he took half the team out in a matter of minutes. Our security systems didn't stop him. We didn't stop him at first either. As Hank pointed out, he's clearly trained in hand-to-hand combat, and he's an expert at infiltration.

EMMA

He also knew exactly when to strike at us, and how. I think Scott has the right idea. Logan was indeed methodical and organised. His movements suggest he possesses the mind of an experienced tactician.

CYCLOPS

But we're still missing a piece of the puzzle here. This doesn't explain what happened. When he was walking up, he was a mess. He met me; still a mess. Wanted to see the Professor; I said no. Suddenly, he's a super soldier. What triggered him? What is there about him that we don't know?

PROFESSOR X

A great deal, I'm afraid.

All the X-Men turn and look at Professor X.

STORM

(Elated.) Professor!

Angel, looking very frustrated, wheels Professor X into the Ward Room in a conventional wheelchair. He still has his hospital gown on.

STORM

Welcome back!

PROFESSOR X

Thank you, Ororo. I'm relieved to see you're all alright.

CYCLOPS

Warren! What the hell were you thinking! The Professor needs to rest!

PROFESSOR X

This is too important, Scott. I insisted Warren bring me in at once. We must find out what happened to Logan, as well as Rogue, as soon as possible. Both are incredibly dangerous to the outside world, to themselves, and to us. The more we delay, the more we risk the safety of everyone here, including the children. What else have we learned?

ICEMAN

A whole lotta nothing, Professor! So far, he's a pissed off MMA champion-turned-feral-hobo with a chip on his shoulder and a creepy obsession with meeting you. Other than that, we got nothing.

EMMA

Now that he is subdued, I could re-enter his mind. I could try to make sense of-

PROFESSOR X

(Sharply.) No. (Looks at Emma.) I appreciate your enthusiasm, Emma, but Logan's mind is far too fragile right now. There exists in him a raging tempest of thoughts, memories, and emotions, often in fierce conflict with one another. If you were to get lost in there, you could cause irreparable damage to both of you.

EMMA

With all due respect, Professor, I'm up to the task.

PROFESSOR X

I know you think you're ready, but believe me when I say this is far too delicate an operation for you. His mind must be explored gently. I don't even trust myself alone to handle it; I'll have Cerebro guide me. Please, let me handle this.

At the risk of looking petty and indignant, Emma says nothing. She simply nods submissively and sits back in her chair.

POLARIS

(Breaking the awkward silence.) Um…one thing I should point out. When he grabbed me, I was able to magnetically throw him across the room. Now, I figured he had a lot of change in his pocket or something or maybe a metal implant or two, but I was able to grab his whole body.

CYCLOPS

(Looks at Beast.) Any idea how that could've happened?

BEAST

Yes, indeed!

Beast enters some commands into his console, and the holographic image changes, now emphasising his skeletal structure.

BEAST

Upon performing a more invasive examination, I discovered that Logan's entire skeletal structure has been fused with a rare metal known as adamantium. It is artificial; it is not known to exist naturally anywhere in the world. It was discovered as a by-product of fusing steel with another virtually indestructible metal: vibranium.

Cyclops and Storm are both shocked. Cyclops leans forward, and Storm leans against the table, to get a better look.

ICEMAN

(Shocked.) Jesus!

Polaris tilts her head, staring at the image. Iceman sits up to examine. Emma stares at the image, amazed. Angel walks around one side of the image to study it further. Jean leans forward on the table.

JEAN

Hank, is this even possible?

BEAST

I believe it may very well be. During our symposium, Kevin and I were treated to a seminar on exactly this: a process of grafting adamantium onto the human skeletal structure. It featured one Doctor Cornelius, who discussed the origins and properties of adamantium. He explained how it is only malleable in its liquid state; once hardened, it is virtually indestructible. He postulated that the unique properties of adamantium made it possible to graft it onto a human skeletal structure. According to his research, he was confident that he was very close to developing a technique for fusing living human tissue with this allow, thereby making his bones indestructible.

ICEMAN

This is crazy! You're saying this guy's a tin man?

BEAST

Far stronger than that, Bobby. His bones are now unbreakable; they could withstand a virtually limitless amount of pressure or attack.

POLARIS

So, you think Logan underwent this procedure? How did Doctor Cornelius get his hands on him?

EMMA

Maybe he volunteered.

BEAST

Unlikely, Emma. Based on what Doctor Cornelius explained, as well as my own assessment of his findings, I can safely say this process would be extremely painful, and almost certainly fatal. The adamantium-bonding process, as he described, would eradicate every nerve connected to your skeletal structure. The process would be neither fast nor painless. And because of the systemic impact to the patient's nervous system, it is highly unlikely they would be given sedatives, numbing agents, or any other form of chemical pain relief.

CYCLOPS

So, again, why the hell would anyone do this to him?

PROFESSOR X

(Leans in towards the hologram.) He's a weapon.

Everyone turns to look at Professor X.

PROFESSOR X

Look there, in his forearms. Hank, are those what I think they are?

BEAST

In each forearm are three retractable blades, each approximately thirty point five centimetres in length. They are razor sharp, and protrude from his knuckles at will.

PROFESSOR X

Precisely. You've all witnessed him in combat. He clearly has extensive training. Ororo, you attributed to him the mind of a skilled tactician. Obviously, he's been well-trained in that field, as well as infiltration. Hank, you told us he was an operative for the Canadian government. It seems likely he was involved in Special Forces or counterterrorism. Perhaps… (Pauses, thinking.) …perhaps this experiment was the last stage in their attempt to develop a 'super soldier'.

CYCLOPS

(Confused.) Professor?

PROFESSOR X

During World War 2, the United States government developed a serum, designed to transform any normal human being, augmenting his or her physical strength, stamina, speed, and sensory awareness. The only successful candidate we know of is the super soldier named Captain America; since then, every major government in the world has attempted to develop their own version of a 'super soldier'. It's possible this is what Logan's government was doing.

ICEMAN

Alright, but I thought Hank said this thing would kill him. How the hell did he survive?

PROFESSOR X

He's a mutant… (Turns to Beast.) …right, Hank?

BEAST

(Smiles affectionately.) Quite right, Professor. It would appear our guest Mister Logan is indeed a mutant. I am unsure as to the full extent of his powers, but they do feature a superhuman ability to regenerate damaged cellular tissue in all areas, including organs. This is undoubtedly how he was able to survive the process. Only someone who could naturally heal himself this rapidly would be able to withstand the intensity of the experiment.

STORM

How rapid is his ability to heal?

BEAST

I submit, Ororo, that his healing factor utterly humiliates my dermal regeneration technology.

POLARIS

(Amazed.) Wow.

ICEMAN

Okay look. So he's some sort of Canadian super-weapon. Why was he so messed up before? And why, for that matter, did he show up at our door?

BEAST

The answers to those questions, dear Bobby, are, unfortunately, beyond the scope of my investigation.

PROFESSOR X

This is where I come in. Only by accessing his thoughts and memories can we determine where he came from and what he wants. This will take time.

EMMA

Professor, let me help you with this. I know enough about the psyche, and I am strong enough to at least navigate inside his mind. You have no idea what you'll find in there. His mind may be too badly damaged for even you to enter safely. I could be there to provide support. And, to be perfectly blunt, I'm not a teenager anymore. I can handle my powers; I was doing so long before I met you.

PROFESSOR X

I appreciate that, Emma, but for now, I need to work alone. Logan is obviously quite volatile and unstable. He is already familiar with me; he'll recognise me, and that just might be enough to reach him. If more than one person enters his mind at once, especially someone with whom he's unfamiliar, he may become defensive, and put up unnecessary walls, and that could-

EMMA

(Offended.) Alright, alright, you've made your point. (Turns away and pouts.)

Professor X frowns at Emma's annoyance, but then something he senses catches his attention. He stares away for a moment, concentrating, but quickly stops, wincing in pain. The others notice right away.

CYCLOPS

Professor?

Cyclops, seeing Professor X in pain, immediately bolts around the table. Iceman watches Cyclops with disgust at his eagerness to run to Professor X's side. Slowly, Professor X starts to recover as Angel and Cyclops come to his sides.

ANGEL

Professor, what is it?

PROFESSOR X

(Still wincing.) I'm fine. My head is still…still a little…sore. There's…um…security cameras…

Beast, now worried, enters several commands into his console. The holographic image changes. Now, it displays an overlay of the school grounds. At the front gates are several dozen people, who appear to be trying to break through the large steel gates. Most are armed with impact weapons like baseball bats, crowbars, and sticks. A few others are also equipped with knives. A more than small number of them are equipped with firearms.

CYCLOPS

(Looks up at the image in awe.) What the hell is that?

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – FRONT GATE - EVENING

In almost cliché fashion, FATHER WINCHESTER stands at the Front Gate, waving a burning stick, whooping up the crowd. The mob, ranging in the dozens, cheers and screams in excitement and anger.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM - EVENING

Beast stares at the image, his jaw wide open.

BEAST

Oh dear.

Cyclops, Professor X, and Angel all stare in terror.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – FRONT GATE - EVENING

Winchester stands at the Front Gate, waving his hands and shouting to get people's attention.

WINCHESTER

(Yelling.) THESE WRETCHED ABOMINATIONS HIDE BEHIND THEIR GATE, BECAUSE THEY'RE AFRAID OF THE TRUTH!

The crowd in front of him cheers and hollers.

WINCHESTER

(Yelling.) BEHIND THESE GATES, MUTANTS, THOSE DEMONS DISGUISING THEMSELVES AS HUMANS, ARE HARBOURING SOME OF THE WORST TERRORISTS AND CRIMINALS IN THE UNITED STATES! ONE OF OUR BRAVE YOUNG MEN CAME HERE TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON HERE. HE SAW THESE MUTANTS CONSPIRING WITH NONE OTHER THAN THAT MOST HATED OF ALL THESE DEMONS, MAGNETO!

The crowd boos and hisses at the mention of Magneto.

WINCHESTER

(Yelling.) RIGHT! WE HAVE PROOF CHARLES XAVIER WAS IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH MAGNETO, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! AND, WE WERE TOLD, IT LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE HAVING A GREAT TIME!

The crowd boos in anger.

WINCHESTER

(Yelling.) AND THERE'S MORE! OUR GREAT LEADER, GRAYDON CREED, WAS ASSAULTED, IN HIS OWN HOME, BY ONE OF THESE MONSTERS!

Creed stands in the back of the mob, arms folded, staring angrily.

WINCHESTER (OFF CAMERA)

(Yelling.) THE MUTANT FREAK CAME TO HIS HOUSE, DREW A GUN, AND SENSELESSLY, SAVAGELY SHOT HIS CLOSE FRIEND, AKIRA YAMAMOTO, KILLING HIM RIGHT THERE! AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT CRIMINAL, THAT ASSASSIN? HE LIVES RIGHT HERE, IN THIS MANSION! HE'S PROBABLY IN THERE RIGHT NOW!

The crowd, filled with rage, hollers and screams.

WINCHESTER

NOW, ARE YOU HARD-WORKING, GOOD CHRISTIAN AMERICANS GOING TO STAND BY AND ALLOW THESE MONSTERS TO EXIST HERE? KILLING US, DESTROYING OUR WAY OF LIFE, AND RUINING THIS COUNTRY?

The crowd screams out 'no'.

WINCHESTER

(Yelling.) I DIDN'T THINK SO! AND NOW, HERE IS YOUR LEADER, YOUR CHAMPION, THE MAN WHO WILL LEAD US TO THE TRULY RIGHTEOUS PLACE: GRAYDON CREED!

Creed makes his way through the crowd, amid thunderous cheers and pats on the back, to the front of the crowd.

CROWD

(Yelling.) CREED! CREED! CREED! CREED! CREED! CREED! CREED! CREED!

CREED

(Yelling.) YOU'RE HERE BECAUSE YOU'RE MAD, AND YOU SHOULD BE! I'M MAD, TOO! IN FACT, I'M FURIOUS! SOME OF THE MOST SAVAGE CRIMINAL MUTANTS LIVE RIGHT HERE, IN THIS HOUSE! WE'VE ALWAYS SUSPECTED THAT XAVIER LOVED MUTANTS A LITTLE TOO MUCH, THAT HE'D ALWAYS PROTECT THESE DEVIANTS AND MONSTERS THEM FROM THE LAWS OF SOCIETY, EVEN WHEN THEY WERE BLATENT CRIMINALS! TERRORISTS MUST BE DESTROYED, AND SO MUST ALL OF THOSE WHO HARBOUR TERRORISTS!

The crowd screams in excitement.

CREED

(Yelling.) BUT SHOULDN'T THE POLICE, OR OUR POLITICIANS, BE TAKING CARE OF THIS? LOOK AT WHAT THEY'VE DONE SO FAR! SAN FRANCISCO! BROOKLYN! NEW JERSEY! YOU THINK THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT BRINGING THESE WRETCHED, VILE MUTIES TO JUSTICE? THE POLICE ARE IN ON IT! I HAVE PROOF THAT THERE ARE MUTANT-COLLABORATORS IN OUR OWN LOCAL POLICE FORCES! THERE ARE OFFICERS WHO TOOK AN OATH LONG AGO TO SERVE AND PROTECT, BUT WHO BLANTENTLY TURN A BLIND EYE TO THIS SCHOOL, AND THE TERRORISTS IT HARBOURS! THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT PROTECTING THE RIGHTS OF THOSE DEMONS IN THERE, BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR RIGHTS? WHAT ABOUT OUR RIGHT TO NOT LIVE IN FEAR? WHAT ABOUT THE RIGHT TO HAVE A GOVERNMENT WILLING TO DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO KEEP US SAFE? DO YOU FEEL SAFE AT NIGHT, KNOWING THESE MONSTERS ARE IN THERE? DO YOUR WIVES AND CHILDREN FEEL SAFE?

The crowd boos and hisses again.

CREED

ARE YOU GONNA JUST STAND HERE AND LET THEM LIVE IN THERE, HIDING FROM US, FROM THE AUTHORITIES, FROM THE LAW?

The crowd hollers "no".

CREED

WELL, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? ON TO VICTORY!

The crowd, howling in rage, charges the Front Gate. Several people at the front of the crowd start to break down the Front Gate. Eventually, the locks snap, and the gate swings open.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM - EVENING

An alarm siren goes off. Everyone looks around nervously.

POLARIS

(Frightened and annoyed.) What the hell is that noise?

BEAST

(Yelling over the siren.) The perimeter alarm, a security system Kevin and I installed along the perimeter fence. It's triggered whenever the fence has been compromised, or motion detectors perceive unidentified movement.

Beast turns to look at Cyclops and Professor X.

BEAST

(Yelling over the siren.) Orders, Scott.

Cyclops looks down at Professor X, and then back at the rest of the group.

CYCLOPS

(Yelling over the siren.) Angel, Polaris, Jean: evacuate the dorms. Get the children out of their rooms and move them into the Main Building at once. Once they're in, lock it down. Storm, Iceman, Emma, you're on perimeter duty. Emma, see if you can create a diversion to scare them off. Hopefully, we can get rid of them without firing any shots. Storm, go up to the rooftop. In case Emma's not able to convince them to back off, create a storm to get rid of them. Remember everyone: NO human casualties! The last thing we need is a body showing up on the news!

ICEMAN

(Yelling over the siren.) Are you kidding me? Yeah, great plan, Scott! I'll try do as little as possible while they're fucking shooting at me!

CYCLOPS

(Yelling over the siren.) Listen, Drake! Any humans die, and we are done! Do you hear me? They will come in here and shut us down tomorrow! And everything we've ever worked for, all our sacrificing and efforts, will be wiped out! No! Human! Casualties! Avoid it at all costs, that clear?

Iceman says nothing, but rolls his eyes and looks away, his version of an acknowledgement.

CYCLOPS

(Yelling over the siren.) Move out!

Storm and Jean look at each other for a moment, then back at Cyclops. They nod at him, then turn and head for the door. Polaris and Iceman get up and head for the exits. Iceman stares angrily at Cyclops as he leaves. As Angel heads off, Cyclops turns to Beast.

CYCLOPS

(Yelling over the siren.) Beast, are your defensive systems operational yet?

BEAST

(Yelling over the siren.) Technically, yes. However, only the primary defensive systems have been completely installed, and they have yet to be tested in an actual combat scenario.

Cyclops shrugs.

CYCLOPS

(Yelling over the siren.) No time like the present. Lock and load, Hank.

Beast nods nervously. He turns, sits down at his console, and starts entering commands. Cyclops looks at Professor X.

CYCLOPS

(Yelling over the siren.) I'm going up.

Cyclops turns and leaves. Professor X watches Cyclops leave, but senses something. As Beast loads the defense program, Professor X turns and leaves.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – GIRLS' DORMITORY – JUBILEE'S DORM ROOM - EVENING

Inside the Girls' Dormitory, Polaris wades through a sea of girls, all frantically making their way to the far exit. Most are still dressed; a few are in their PJs.

POLARIS

Hurry up, girls! Leave everything here! You'll be back soon enough! We just need to get you to safety! Leave everything and go!

Jean stands at the door, directing the girls where to go.

JEAN

Quickly, ladies. Head straight to the quad. We'll get you blankets and things like that. Just go there now!

Jubilee and Shadowcat slowly move through the long mass of girls, towards Polaris.

JUBILEE

(Yells.) Ms. Dane, Ms. Dane!

Polaris' attention is obviously on getting all the girls out. She half-cocks her head towards Jubilee and Shadowcat.

POLARIS

Yes, girls? I need you to head to the exits right away.

SHADOWCAT

We want to help. What can we do?

Polaris moves slowly through the crowd, towards the girls.

POLARIS

Alright, I need you to do a quick run-through of all the rooms on this floor. Check and double-check to make sure the rooms are clear. Check under beds, in closets, anywhere someone can hide. Call out for people, just in case. I'm going to check upstairs. Wait for me at the door once you're done. Make sure no one else comes back in. Go.

The girls nod and immediately head off.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING - EVENING

Storm stands on the edge of the roof of the Main Building, watching the attackers sprint towards them.

Dozens of angry people charge across the field, heading towards the school, armed with guns, knives, baseball bats, and whatever other weapons they brought with them. They sprint across the main field, screaming and howling in a whooped up frenzy. A few stop to take a swig from their flasks before resuming.

Storm puts her hand to her earpiece.

STORM

Emma, I am in position. Are you ready?

INT. X-MEN BASE – CEREBRO - EVENING

Emma is in Cerebro. She has put on the helmet, activated the system and is concentrating, eyes closed.

EMMA (TELEPATHICALLY)

Cerebro is online. I am initiating contact.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING - EVENING

As the crowd sprints forward, the sudden image of Fin Fang Foom, the colossal green and yellow dragon-like creature, taller than the tallest spire on the school's roof, appears, hurling balls of acid at the mob. The people in the front are startled and horrified. They stop dead in their tracks, staring at the enormous beast before them, screaming in terror. Several armed hooligans instantly draw their weapons and start firing at the monster.

STORM

Emma, they are firing at the target. Cease your telepathy at once.

One person, who has brought a rocket-propelled grenade, puts the weapon onto his shoulder and fires. The RPG flies through Fin Fang Foom, hitting the Girl's Dormitory.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – GIRLS' DORMITORY - EVENING

Jubilee and Shadowcat close the door to the room at the end of the hall. As they start to head down the hall, the RPG hits. There is a deafening explosion from inside the room they were just in. The explosion shatters and splinters the door they just closed, sending shards flying. A fireball bursts through the door frame, knocking the girls to the floor, screaming and crying. Their heads bounce on the ground as shards of wood and metal rain down on them.

Polaris, startled by the explosion, turns and looks towards the sound.

JEAN

(Horrified.) What was that?

POLARIS

Jean, I'm going to grab the girls!

Polaris starts running down the hall towards Jubilee and Shadowcat.

Shadowcat and Jubilee lie flat on the ground, covering their heads and screaming as pieces of wood and shrapnel cover them. Polaris runs up and grabs both girls.

POLARIS

Let's go girls! Go, go, go!

Jubilee and Shadowcat, dazed, stumble to get to their feet.

SHADOWCAT

Oh my God, what the hell was that?

POLARIS

No time for questions, Kitty. Just move!

Jean stands at the exit, waving to the girls.

JEAN

Come on! We need to move quickly!

Jubilee and Shadowcat, being hastily ushered by Polaris, run through the door.

JEAN

Everybody out?

POLARIS

Yes!

Jean exits and quickly closes the door.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING - EVENING

Storm stretches out her arms. Her eyes turn clear white, and the clouds above her heads quickly start to gather and churn.

As thunder starts to crackle, the crowd looks up. The wind begins to violently pick up. The sky quickly fills with thick, dark clouds. Lightning strikes the top of the Main Building around Storm, bolstering the bravado and savagery of the approaching tempest. The wind reaches hurricane-speeds, and becomes so intense that several rioters tumble backwards, screaming, and try to cover themselves.

While most of the other rioters are turning away, Creed, armed with a baseball bat, marches forward slowly.

CREED

DON'T RUN! THEY WANT YOU TO BE SCARED OF THEM! DON'T BACK DOWN NOW, NOT WHEN WE'RE THIS CLOSE!

Another vandal, also armed with an RPG, loads it and fires in Storm's direction. The RPG soars through the air, aiming for the roof of the Main Building. It bounces around in the wind, but stays on target. It hits the Main Building, erupting in a massive explosion.

Storm leaps into the air and flies away just before impact, but the explosive flying debris knocks her out of the sky. She crashes down onto the roof.

The crowd turns and continues its advance. Several rioters armed with rifles and machine guns open fire aimlessly on the school buildings.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – GIRLS' DORMITORY - EVENING

Bullets riddle the outside of the school, shattering windows and sending class and shards of concrete and brick flying in all directions. The crowd continues to advance on the school. One rioter charges forward, but a red optic blast knocks him to the ground. Several others are knocked down by quick optic blasts to the chest.

CYCLOPS

Bringing guns to a school? Pathetic.

Cyclops puts his hand to his visor, and fires again. The rioter is hit in the chest, and is knocked backwards. He hits the ground and doubles over in pain.

CYCLOPS

(Shakes his head.) Morons. (Fires again.)

Another rioter is hit. He is running so fast that the optic blast flips him over backwards. He lands hard on his chest.

CYCLOPS

(Keeps firing short bursts.) Beast, are the defense batteries ready?

BEAST (VIA RADIO)

Defensive systems are online and operational.

CYCLOPS

(Fires several more short bursts.) Hit it!

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM - EVENING

Beast enters several commands into the console on the center table.

BEAST

Primary defense systems engaged.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS - EVENING

Dozens of rioters continue to race across the front grounds. As one of the rioters runs towards the school, a large net of thick, intertwined nylon juts out of the ground. The net mesh is eight feet by eight feet, and attached to two large steel poles. The rioter crashes into the net, which immediately snaps forward, like a mousetrap, pinning the rioter to the ground. The poles immediately stretch out until the mesh becomes taut. The rioter, now pinned to the ground, struggles to free himself from the net, swearing and cursing as he does. Suddenly, there is the sound of an electric current being activated, and the rioter jumps momentarily. He then goes limp, twitching only lightly.

Several nets crop up all over the field, catching advancing rioters, pinning them to the ground, and lightly tasing them.

BEAST (VIA RADIO)

Can you provide me with a preliminary assessment of the efficacy of our defense network?

CYCLOPS

(Keeps firing short bursts.) Looks good from up here.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM - EVENING

CYCLOPS (VIA RADIO)

How's it looking from your end?

BEAST

Defensive systems are operating perfectly. We've contained nearly thirty rioters.

CYCLOPS (VIA RADIO)

You've got the taser levels on their lowest setting, right?

BEAST

Of course, Scott. I am also monitoring vital signs of incapacitated rioters. Fear not; I understood your "no casualties" speech quite clearly.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS - EVENING

CYCLOPS

I know you did, Hank. Keep me posted.

Winchester, followed by six rioters, charges towards Cyclops. However, two nets spring up, catching the six rioters and pinning them down. Winchester pauses for a moment, seeing them fall. He turns around, looks down at his trapped comrades, and gasps. Suddenly realising he is alone, he slowly turns around, staring at Cyclops. Before he can react, an optic blast knocks him to the ground.

WINCHESTER

Oh Lord, I am dead. I await your loving embrace!

Cyclops walks up to Winchester and looks down at him.

CYCLOPS

(Annoyed.) You're not dead…dumbass. You've been hit in the chest by an energy blast. You'll live.

WINCHESTER

DEMON! HEATHEN!

Winchester tries to get up, but the pain in his chest keeps him on the ground.

CYCLOPS

(Rolls his eyes.) Jesus…

Cyclops gently steps forward and boots Winchester in the forehead, knocking him out.

CYCLOPS

Dumbass.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM - EVENING

Beast works hard at the controls, coordinating the net deployments.

BEAST

When will humans and mutants learn that violence is little more than an archaic form of expressing frustration, with little regard for either the art of diplomatic negotiation, or the positions of those against whom they fight. Would you not agree, Professor?

Professor X has long since disappeared, without Beast's notice. Beast looks around, surprised. Now perplexed, Beast looks behind him.

BEAST

Professor?

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY – EVENING

Wolverine slowly wakes up. His mutant healing factor overcame the sedatives and woke up back up. Instinctively, he bolts upright. Like a frightened animal, he looks around. He sees Rogue lying on a bed beside him, and then turns to the bed where Professor X was lying. He jumps out of bed and runs over to Professor X's bed. Wolverine bends down and sniffs the bed.

WOLVERINE

(Growls.) Xavier.

PROFESSOR X

Logan.

Wolverine, startled, turns rapidly to look at Professor X.

PROFESSOR X

My name is Charles Xavier. Do you remember me?

WOLVERINE

X…avier.

PROFESSOR X

That's right. Do you remember me? We met in Washington several months ago. It was only for a few minutes. I was with Hank McCoy. Does that name sound familiar?

WOLVERINE

Hank…Hank McCoy. (Starts looking around.) Where…where am I? I was…I was looking for…

PROFESSOR X

I think you were looking for me. You came here because you wanted my help. You came here looking for answers. I think I can help you find some of those answers.

WOLVERINE

(Still cloudy and confused.) Xavier…Charles Xavier.

Wolverine rubs his head, trying to remember things, and rapidly growing more and more frustrated. Professor X concentrates, reading Wolverine's mind. His eyes widen, and he suddenly becomes nervous.

PROFESSOR X

Logan? Logan, listen to me!

Wolverine stares at Professor X, his programing once again kicking in.

WOLVERINE

Charles Xavier. Target identified. (Extends his claws and starts walking towards Professor X.)

Wolverine continues to advance on Professor X.

PROFESSOR X

Logan? Logan, listen to me! Logan!

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS - EVENING

The Channel 6 helicopter hovers over the main grounds of the Xavier Mansion. Dozens of rioters are pinned down on the nets, clearly visible from the helicopter, but the majority of rioters are still charging ahead.

REPORTER

(Yelling over the helicopter's engines.) I'm currently hovering above the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, a private school in upstate New York. For an as-of-yet unknown reason, nearly a hundred rioters have stormed the gates and are attacking the school.

ANCHORWOMAN (VIA RADIO)

What are the rioters armed with? Are they just smashing with whatever they can find?

REPORTER

(Yelling over the helicopter's engines.) I'm afraid not. Most seem to be armed with baseball bats, crowbars, and the like, but several have brought guns, and a few have even brought automatic or heavy assault weapons like rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. Earlier we saw at least two RPGs fired at the school. One hit what looks like a dormitory, while the other hit the Main Building.

ANCHORWOMAN (VIA RADIO)

It sounds like a war zone over there! How is the school responding? Is there any mutant activity going on?

REPORTER

(Yelling over the helicopter's engines.) Well, we are seeing some mutant activity, but it seems that the school has its own defense systems in place, and they're holding the rioters off for the time being. We're going to keep watching the story as it developed. Back to you.

Cyclops keeps firing at protesters.

Several rioters who are free work on ripping through the nets holding their fellow protesters, freeing them up. After a quick recovery, they rejoin the attack.

CYCLOPS

(Puts his hand to his earpiece.) Polaris, Jean, and anyone else who's available, get up here. They're breaking through.

POLARIS (VIA RADIO)

On our way.

The rioters continue to charge, their numbers returning to their original levels. Several of the ones armed with rifles advance on the school, firing in all directions.

Cyclops bobs and weaves as bullets fly past him. He continues firing, knocking down one rioter after another.

Rioter after rioter is knocked to the ground, their guns flying off in all directions. One rioter, hit in the chest by Cyclops, sends his gun flying. It hits a nearby rioter in the head, knocking him out. He crumples onto the grass.

Cyclops shakes his head in disbelief, but keeps firing.

A lone rioter has snuck past the nets and Cyclops' defense, and is now behind him and off to the side. He slowly sneaks up behind Cyclops as he continues firing, completely unaware of the rioter. The rioter pulls out a handgun and points it at Cyclops. Cautiously, he puts the gun to the back of Cyclops' head and pulls the trigger. The sound is deafening, and Cyclops instinctively drops to the floor, screaming. The rioter, amazed at the sound, also screams, and stumbles backwards. Cyclops turns around and looks at the rioter.

CYCLOPS

(Alarmed.) WHAT THE FUCK!

Cyclops fires a powerful optic blast, lifting the rioter into the air, knocking his gun from his hand, and dropping him twenty feet away in a crumpled heap. Cyclops, panting and terrified, gets back to his feet. Hovering in the air, inches from where his head was, the bullet fired from the gun hovers, still spinning. Cyclops looks to his right. Polaris has her arm stretched out, holding onto the bullet, while Jean clasps her chest, heaving a sigh of relief. Once she has caught her breath, she runs to Cyclops and hugs him tightly.

JEAN

Oh my God, are you alright?

CYCLOPS

(Obviously shaken up.) I'm fine. A little deaf at the moment, but I'm okay.

JEAN

You know how close that was? That man was going to kill you! He had a gun to the back of your head!

CYCLOPS

Jean, it's okay. I'm fine. Relax.

Jean hugs Cyclops closely, burying her face on his shoulder. Cyclops hugs her tight. Meanwhile, several heavily armed rioters run up. They stop and raise their weapons, but are met with a wind so thick and powerful it knocks many of them back. One of the rioters tries to cover his face from the wind, but a massive snowball hits him in the head, knocking him out. A thick wave of snowballs hit the rioters, knocking them to the ground and pummelling them mercilessly.

Storm and Iceman, standing on top of the Main Building, point at the rioters. Storm pushes hurricane-force winds on the rioters, while Iceman hurls snowballs at them.

ICEMAN

(Laughs hysterically.) Like shooting fish in a barrel, except these fish are assholes! Hey Storm, watch this!

Iceman launches a barrage of snowballs in all directions.

Rioters are hit with hundreds of snowballs, knocking them over and pounding them down. Many rioters simply drop to their knees and cover their heads. Several rioters try to return fire, but end up firing in all directions instead, smashing windows and shattering brick. One turn and runs, and a large snowball hits him in the butt, sending him flying.

ICEMAN

(Laughs hysterically.) HAHAHAHAHA! Hey Storm, triple XP if you send one of them into a tree! Betcha I can do it before you! (Laughs even more.) This is great!

STORM

Iceman, your job is to incapacitate the attackers, not play with them!

ICEMAN

Oh whatever! These fuckers need to recognize who they're messing with!

Storm turns angrily to Iceman.

STORM

Iceman! Bobby! Do as you're instructed, or else you will be removed!

Iceman glances at Storm momentarily, snarling as he does.

ICEMAN

Fine! Geez, just trying to have a little fun, Ororo!

Cyclops moves back to where he was standing, with Jean and Polaris on either side. He resumes firing, while Polaris and Jean point towards the rioters.

Several armed rioters charge forward, but their guns and weapons suddenly leap from their hands and fly up into the air. One rioter stares at his gun, confused, as it flies into the air. He watches it until an optic blast sends him flying backwards.

More rioters run forward, but are bowled over from the side by a soaring Angel.

Storm leaps into the air and flies off. She glides through the air, over the rioters. Several lightning bolts light up the sky, and slam into the ground beneath her.

The rioters, now terrified, jump in all directions as deafening lightning bolts rip the earth all around them. They all quickly turn and run for their lives, many of them dropping whatever weapons they had with them and sprinting for dear life. Storm continues to bombard the ground with ferocious lightning bolts as the rioters scramble in all directions. She aims for areas around them, but makes sure not to strike anywhere too close. The rioters sprint away, even faster than they ran coming in. Several optic blasts fly through the air, further terrifying them. They scream and howl as they run, covering their heads.

Creed watches the rioters flee in disgust.

CREED

NO! DON'T RUN! WE HAVE THEM! DON'T GIVE UP! COME BACK!

Cyclops notices Creed to his left in the distance, screaming at the rioters. He turns and takes a few steps towards him, putting his hand to his visor as he does. He comes to a stop, drops to one knee, and fires a single, short burst. Creed is hit in the shoulder by Cyclops' optic blast, and knocked to the ground, grunting as he does.

CYCLOPS

(Smiles with satisfaction.) Wow, that felt good.

The panicky crowd runs towards the Gate through which they entered, only to be blocked off by six police vans, four police SUVs, dozens of police cars, and Davis' car. Davis and Gill jump out of his car. Davis has a bullhorn. All the officers fan out and begin rounding up rioters.

DAVIS (THROUGH THE BULLHORN)

Everyone stay where you are! Get down on the ground with your faces down!

The crowd tries to scatter, but the officers quickly fan out, grabbing as many rioters as they can. One rioter tries to run past Gill, but he tackles him to the ground and starts handcuffing him.

GILL

Whoa, easy there big boy! Don't make this harder than it is!

REPORTER

(Yelling over the helicopter's engines.) Now, the police have arrived, and are starting to round up the rioters. It looks like things are getting under control now. The rioters are fleeing into the woods, but the police are in hot pursuit.

INT. MAGNETO'S LAIR – DINING ROOM – EVENING

The footage on Channel 6 is showing on Magneto's television.

REPORTER (VIA TV)

Now it's rumoured that this attack was organised by the grassroots anti-mutant online group Friends of Humanity, and that the leader of this group, Graydon Creed, was personally on hand to lead the attack. We'll try and get that confirmed.

Magneto stands and watches, arms folded, disgusted.

ANCHORWOMAN (VIA TV)

Now, how many arrests do you think will be made tonight?

REPORTER (VIA TV)

Well, from the looks of it the number of arrests will range around one hundred. Undoubtedly there will be more arrests for this attack in the coming days.

ANCHORWOMAN (VIA TB)

Do you think any of the mutants will also be arrested?

REPORTER (VIA TV)

It's too early to tell right now, but it doesn't appear to be so. Right now the police are concerned with only the rioters. The mutants are remaining put, and not engaging the rioters.

Magneto snarls angrily, turns, and walks away.

MAGNETO

Mystique, ready the jet!

Magneto waves his hand forcefully, and the television turns off.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – FRONT GATE - NIGHT

Davis watches as the police round up as many of the rioters as they can. A few are still kicking and screaming anti-mutant obscenities, but most are docile and calm. The flashing lights from the cruisers light up the entire area brilliantly. Gill walks up to him.

DAVIS

Anything?

GILL

(Shakes his head.) Nope. If Creed was here, he's in the wind now. He and about a dozen others managed to book it before we could nab 'em. Word is there was also a minister here, too, but he's MIA too. Either way, we only got the chumps.

DAVIS

Look around you, Eddie. Look what's happening here. The people at this school may have done a couple things that aren't on the level, but a riot? Is this really what we're coming to?

GILL

People are scared. Mutants are freaks, far as they're concerned. They don't understand how mutants exist, or what they can and can't do. That frightens them, and people don't like to be frightened.

DAVIS

True, but are we going to turn New York into seventeenth-century Salem, and just go around burning mutants at the stake? People are reacting to potential violence with actual violence.

GILL

(Nods.) No argument here, but look. Like it or not, tension's rising. People are getting more and more antsy. We can't keep the lid on this pot forever. Sooner or later, it's gonna boil over, and this is just the first stage. Baton down the hatches, 'cause there's a war coming.

Gill pats Davis on the back and walks off. As he does, Davis sees someone in the distance. Squinting, he notices Cyclops standing off to one side, staring at him. He calmly walks over to Cyclops.

DAVIS

Rough night?

CYCLOPS

You could say that. You?

DAVIS

Hell of a night. Everyone alright?

CYCLOPS

I think so. A few cuts and bruises, but nothing serious. A lot of structural damage; one of our rooms got hit by an RPG, and there are bullet holes everywhere.

DAVIS

Jesus. They weren't fooling around, were they?

CYCLOPS

Do they ever?

DAVIS

Look, this is getting out of hand. This wasn't just a random attack by a bunch of drunks looking for a fight. These guys might have been amateurs, but they were organised, they were coordinated, and they knew exactly how to get here. What the hell is going on here?

Cyclops continues to stare in the distance.

CYCLOPS

I don't know what you're talking about.

DAVIS

Don't bullshit me! You know exactly what I'm talking about! This whole time, you guys have been keeping me in the dark about this place. We both know this is more than just a school, so don't feed me some practised bullshit line about how this place is completely transparent, and all you do here is educate young minds. You going to tell me those electrified nets are part of some outdoor sports club you guys are running? What the hell else is in that field, or for that matter hidden around the school? The Professor's made it obvious that there's more going on here, and my guess is that even Creed and the rest of these clowns know more about this place than I do. I've bent over backwards to keep the press and the rest of the force out of here, but it seems the word's out anyway! Now you don't have a choice. I need to know exactly what's going on here, right now!

CYCLOPS

(Staring into the distance.) I think you need to talk to the Professor first.

DAVIS

Yeah I think I do. Where is he?

CYCLOPS

(Staring into the distance.) Does this have to be done right now? It's kind of been a rough night.

DAVIS

Yeah, it has to be done right now! Go get him, or I will!

Cyclops snarls in indignation and turns to look at Davis, but then puts his hand to his earpiece.

CYCLOPS

Professor, this is Scott, come in.

There is no response.

CYCLOPS

Professor? (No response.) Hank, find the Professor!

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM - NIGHT

CYCLOPS (VIA RADIO)

He's not picking up.

BEAST

Consider it done.

Beast types several commands into the computer, then turns to the monitor behind him. It displays a schematic of the X-Men base, with Professor X highlighted. Beast leaps up and heads to the door.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MAIN CORRIDOR - NIGHT

Beast walks down the hall, tapping his earpiece.

BEAST

Professor? Professor Charles Xavier?

Beast looks around the corridor, but there is no sign of Professor X. Worried, Beast turns and heads to the Medical Bay. As he gets to there, he notices fresh blood on the floor.

BEAST

Professor!

Beast, terrified, turns the corner and looks into the Medical Bay.

Beast looks inside and sees Professor X slumped over, his eyes closed. There is a small amount of blood on the floor beneath him. Wolverine is on one knee, his head down, kneeling before Professor X.

BEAST

(Gasps.) PROFESSOR!

Beast starts running towards Professor X and Wolverine. As he sprints towards Professor X, he suddenly raises his hand to stop him. Beast halts in his tracks, stunned.

BEAST

(Confused and alarmed.) Professor?

Professor X slowly lowers his hand, concentrating. Wolverine gently lifts his head, tears running down his cheeks.

WOLVERINE

Why…why did they do this to me? What am I? What have they turned me into?

Wolverine starts sobbing again, and lowers his head. Professor X slowly opens his eyes, looking down towards Wolverine.

PROFESSOR X

Together, we'll find the answers. Welcome, Logan. At last, the Wolverine, feral and savage, has found a home. (Smiles gently.)

Wolverine slowly raises his head, smiling. Beast smiles, and heaves a sigh of relief.

BEAST

(Still tense.) We thought…I presumed…I noticed blood on the floor, and thought…thought you had been injured…or worse.

PROFESSOR X

I had.

Professor X turns to look at Beast, displaying three large lacerations on his other cheek. The slices match Wolverine's claws exactly. Beast looks on, concerned, but nods nervously in understanding.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MORNING

The next morning, the entire staff is busy making repairs to the school. The window where the RPG hit is being repaired, and all the bullet holes are being filled and concealed. The nets that were deployed and damaged are being replaced, as is the stone on the Main Building destroyed by the other RPG. Fencing has been put up to keep the children away from the repair zones, but they still stand nearby, watching eagerly.

DAVIS

From here, it doesn't look too bad.

PROFESSOR X

Brick and concrete can be repaired, even replaced. The impact on the students, however, is much more damaging, and much longer lasting. Many of the children here fled their past lives of violence and abuse to come here, in the hopes that they will be safe. Until last night, they were. Now, their feelings of security have been shattered. This place is no longer a safe haven for them.

DAVIS

Unfortunately, this is a mutant institution; it's no surprise that anti-mutant sentiment would be drawn here. It's only a matter of time before this place becomes a lightning rod for hatred against you and your people. What happened last night, with the armed mob, this is only the beginning. (Sighs, upset.) The war is coming. Mutants and humans are going to continue to push against each other. Magneto and the Brotherhood will continue to attack US citizens, and people like Senator Kelly and Graydon Creed will continue to spew hatred and racism. Sooner or later the two sides are going to meet, one person will take the first shot, and the entire country will erupt. You'll be forced to choose.

PROFESSOR X

My only choice is for peace, Bill. Peace is the most important goal of all. I refuse to believe that we're too far gone to turn back. What happened last night was disturbing to be sure, but it was an isolated incident, orchestrated by a small handful of misguided individuals. This doesn't reflect the general population.

DAVIS

Are you sure? Are you so certain that it's only a handful? Look at the Friends of Humanity website. He's got thousands, hundreds of thousands, of supporters all over the world. And the more the Brotherhood continues to attack, the more supporters they'll get. You need to be on your guard, because this won't be the last time they come after you.

INT. KELLY'S OFFICE - NIGHT

The door opens, and Kelly steps inside. It is late at night, and everyone else has gone home. Kelly hastily comes in and closes the door. He has taken off his jacket, and has it slung over his arm. He goes around his desk, to find a Post-It note on it. He picks it up and reads it. The note reads "Congratulations (future) Mister President! We're all behind you! Let's get 'em! -Martha"

Kelly smiles and looks up. Feeling exalted, he goes around the desk and back to the door. He opens it and looks up and down the corridor.

KELLY

Martha? You here?

No response. Kelly looks once more up and down the hall.

KELLY

You know how I feel about surprises…

No response from anywhere, so Kelly goes back inside and closes the door. He goes back behind his desk, unlocks a drawer and opens it. Inside is a file. Kelly takes it out and opens it up. This file contains all the information regarding sentinels. The first page is the blueprint for a sentinel.

There is a knock at the door. Kelly looks up, startled, but smiles, thinking it is Martha. He puts the folder back in his desk and locks it before getting up. Once the file is secure, Kelly heads out from behind his desk.

KELLY

Let me guess: a not-so-surprise party?

Kelly opens the door, and Magneto is standing on the other side. He is in his full uniform, including his helmet. Kelly jumps back, startled and suddenly terrified.

KELLY

My God!

MAGNETO

(Smiles sinisterly.) Surprise!

Kelly is speechless, frozen in terror.

MAGNETO

Good evening, Senator! I hope I'm not catching you at a bad time.

Kelly backs up, so terrified he stumbles.

KELLY

What…what do you…what do you want!

Magneto calmly follows him into his Office.

MAGNETO

Oh, I just want a moment or two of your time. I understand that being a candidate for the leadership of our party demands so much more of one's time than being a simple, lowly senator. I just assumed that I should speak with you now, before you find your day planner all filled up.

KELLY

You take one step closer, and I'll scream!

MAGNETO

(Smiles patronizingly.) Spoken like a true man of courage.

KELLY

I'll have a dozen Special Forces men in this room in less than ten seconds if you don't get the hell out of here!

MAGNETO

Go right ahead. Call them, if you wish. They are, for lack of a will to provide a more precise explanation, indisposed at the moment. I wanted to make sure I could reach my senator, without having to go through any bureaucracy.

KELLY

(Trembling.) What is it you want from me?

MAGNETO

I told you, Senator, a moment of your time…or two.

KELLY

Well-well you have it. Now speak quickly, and then get out!

MAGNETO

(Shakes his head.) Senator, Senator, this isn't the proper venue. I prefer somewhere more…intimate. We need to talk.

Magneto starts moving towards Kelly. As he does, he slams the door behind him.

BLACK OUT.
