The Legend of Mala
This is the story of Mala, the Avatar after Korra. Set 16 years after the passing of Avatar Korra, a 10 year old Earthbender girl from Republic City was discovered to be the next Avatar and in only six years, she had become a master of earthbending, firebending, and airbending. Now, she must master waterbending to become the new Avatar.
Disclaimer: I own nothing from the Avatar Universe except my own OCs.
Author's Note: Some of the characters that help Mala come from people I'm in a Facebook group with. Also, this will start after Mala just turns 16
Fire. Air. Water. Earth.
The world has known much change thanks to my wife, Avatar Korra, who had taken on the Sato name upon marrying me. The Spirit Portals at the North and South Poles were left open, the Airbenders were brought back from the brink of extinction, and a new Spirit Portal was even created in the heart of my home, Republic City.
As stated by her Airbending teacher, Tenzin, Korra changed the world in a few years more than any Avatar before her did in their lifetimes. Sadly, though, she'd passed away, and the Avatar Cycle rolled on.
Walking through Republic City one evening was a teenage girl with light tan skin, braided jet black hair to the middle of her back, and green eyes seemed at ease. At her side was a teenage boy about a year older than her with onyx black hair in a half ponytail, caramel skin, and green eyes, as well as a right arm made of rock and earth. They were the new Avatar, Mala, and her best friend T'kar respectively.
"Nice day today." T'kar said.
Mala smiled and nodded. "Yeah, it is."
"I meant to ask you how the waterbending's coming along."
She sighed. "Master Yarok says I'm making some progress day by day."
"You know you have Korra to ask for guidance."
She nodded. "Still, it wouldn't hurt to get help from the past lives before her. I wish I could try to restore that connection."
"Maybe Padma and Pong's mother knows something."
"...Master Jinora! Of course! She'd read all about the adventures her grandparents and their friends were on. Maybe Aang's stories mentioned a way he reconnected with his past lives!"
"Exactly." He smirked.
She immediately hugged him tightly. "T'kar, you're a genius!" She said as she pulled back. "I have to get to Air Temple Island to talk to Jinora." She said then started running, letting out a loud whistle. A few seconds later, an adult Sabertooth Moose Lion came running behind her. She used airbending to launch herself to a saddle on the creature's back. "Come on, Zira! Let's head to Air Temple Island!"
The Sabertooth Moose Lion, now identified as Zira, ran towards the docks. Once there, Mala used earthbending and made a platform big enough for Zira to stand on then the animal stood on the platform and Mala smiled. "Good girl!" She said then used airbending to move the platform to the island. Once they reached the shore, Zira stepped off and Mala climbed down then used an air scooter to reach the temple while Zira relaxed outside.
Mala opened the doors of the dining hall and spotted the person she was looking for and smiled as she walked to her. "Hey, Jinora?"
The woman with airbending tattoos and graying brown hair looked at Mala and smiled. "Well, there's my airbending student!" She said then stood up and hugged Mala, who hugged back. "How are you, Mala?"
"I'm good. I wanted to ask you something."
Jinora nodded and gestures to the seat across from her at the table. "Please."
Mala sat across from Jinora. "How can I help the new Avatar?"
"Is it true that you read all the adventures your grandfather and his Team Avatar went on?"
Jinora chuckled and nodded. "I did. Every single one. Several times, actually."
"...Was it mentioned how your grandfather restored his connection to his past lives?"
Jinora began to see why Mala was asking these questions. "You believe you can restore the connection to the Avatars before Korra."
Mala looked down. "Please, Jinora. If it'll help me get a better grasp on waterbending, I have to take the risk."
Jinora sighed. "It was mentioned that my grandfather had to reconnect with the lives of Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, and Yangchen, the Avatars before him, to restore the connection to all his past lives."
Mala looked at her. "I'm already connected to Korra. Do you think I could connect with Aang, Roku, and Kyoshi in order to restore the Avatar Cycle?"
The airbender thought that through as another woman walked to them with a smile with a man at her side. Mala smiled at her. "Hi, Ikki. Hi, Meelo."
"Hi, Mala." Jinora's younger sister, Ikki, said then the two hugged them Mala and Meelo hugged. "How've you been? How come you haven't visited in the past few weeks? And why do I feel like we're interrupting something?" Ikki asked.
Mala giggled. "I've been great. I haven't visited because Master Yarok is still helping me with waterbending. And I was just asking your sister if I can possibly restore the connection to your grandfather and the Avatars before him." She answered the the three looked at Jinora.
"...I can't be certain if it would, but I think it might be possible. I believe to do so, you'd have to journey to the Spirit World." She said. "But Mala... the Spirit World is dangerous."
"Don't worry. I won't go alone. I'll talk to Korra and Asami's daughter, Anna, along with T'kar, Chai Si, Hazaka, and Padma about coming with me."
Jinora sighed. "I know you won't stop at anything to see this through, so please be careful."
Mala nodded. "I will. Where's Padma?" She asked.
"At the rotating gates."
Mala smiled then headed to the training grounds.
There, she saw a girl with light skin, shoulder length black hair, and an airbender wingsuit training new Airbenders then walked to her. She blushed as she looked at her. "...Hi, Padma." She said.
The girl smiled at Mala. "Hey. One sec." She said then looked at the other airbenders. "Take a little break, you guys."
The ones she was training spread out a bit around the training grounds as Padma and Mala walked a little bit away.
"What's up?" Padma asked.
"...Would you like to join me and a few others on a Spirit World journey?" Mala asked.
"Are you kidding?" She asked then smiled. "I'd love to!"
Mala smiled. "Great. I'm gonna go ask T'kar, Hazaka, and Chai Si if they want in."
Padma nodded. "I'll get some supplies loaded into Rose's saddle. Let's meet tomorrow morning at the Spirit Portal downtown."
Mala nodded then whistled for Zira, who was at her friend's side in a few seconds. The two then headed back to the mainland and headed to the Pro-bending arena.
Mala walked in and watched the current match.
"The Future Industries Fire Ferrets have really come far this season. They've advanced as far as the did in their rookie season." Shiro Shinobi said as Mala walked to the sponsor of the Fire Ferrets and CEO of Future Industries, Asami Sato. Her hair was grey but she didn't look much different. Sitting beside Asami was a teenage girl with Asami's raven black hair to her shoulder blades, and Korra's skin color.
Mala cleared her throat to get their attention. "Hi, Asami. Hi, Anna." She said.
The two looked at the Avatar and smiled. Anna had two different colored eyes, one light green and the other cyan.
"Hi, Mala." Asami said then hugged her. "How are you?"
"I'm good. I was hoping to talk to Anna about something."
"What is it?" Anna asked.
"I'm headed to the Spirit World with Padma and hopefully, Hazaka, T'kar, and Chai Si, if they'll say yes, for a little mission I've given myself. I was wondering if you would like to join us."
Anna looked at Asami. "Can I, Mom?"
Asami smiled and nodded. "Of course, sweetheart." She said.
"Great! I'll ask Hazaka when the match ends." Mala said when suddenly...
"IT'S A KNOCKOUT! With her teammates out of the round and the match, Hazaka singlehandedly secures the Ferrets' spot in the championship tournament, where they'll face off against several other teams for a shot at the finals and the championship pot." Shiro said then Mala and Anna ran to where the Fire Ferrets took their uniforms off.
On the team were firebender Hazaka, waterbender Tiala, and earthbender Hong, all three of whom had black hair, Hazaka's being kept in a ponytail, Hong's being shorter, and Tiala's kept in a braid. Mala and Anna walked to Hazaka, who looked at them with a smile.
"Hey, girls." She said.
"Hey!" Mala said.
"Great match!" Anna said.
"I'll say." Hong told them.
"You really saved our asses tonight." Tiala said with a smile to her teammate.
Hazaka smiled then looked at her friends. "So, what's up?"
"Mala has given herself an Avatar quest in the Spirit World and is putting together a team for it." Anna said.
"Who all's on it?"
"Padma and Anna right now. I was wondering if you would want a part of this." Mala said. "I'll be asking T'kar and Chai Si soon after."
"Sure. Tournament's a couple weeks away, anyhow." Hazaka said. "Plus, I'm curious about what the Spirit World is like."
"Great!" Both the Avatar and non-bender said in unison.
"Pack light, ladies. I've gotta talk to the boys now. Meet at the downtown Spirit Portal tomorrow morning." Mala said then headed out.
She and Zira met up with T'kar and he looked at them. "You two seem to be in a rush."
Mala nodded. "Long story short,I'm putting together a new Team Avatar for a Spirit World based self-given mission I have and would like you to join it."
"Who all's on the new Team Avatar?"
"Me, Padme, Hazaka, and Anna right now."
He smirked. "Then I'm in!"
Mala was a bit surprised. "Just like that?"
He nodded. "Just like that."
She smiled. "Great. Now I gotta go ask Chai Si if he wants in."
He winced a bit. "Good luck."
"If it's coming from me, it should be okay." She said. "Spirit Portal downtown tomorrow morning."
He nodded then Mala and Zira rode to the outskirts of the city.
They spotted a cabin near a forest and ran to it.
When they stopped, Mala walked to the door and knocked.
"Yeah?" A guy called from inside.
"It's me! Can I come in?" Mala asked.
"Sure." He replied then Mala walked in and looked at a guy who had long black hair tied back, Water Tribe clothes under a black cloak, and greenish blue eyes.
"Hey, Chai Si."
"Hey. What's up in the life of the Avatar?" He asked.
"I've given myself a mission in the Spirit World and have a team going with me. I was wondering, since my own waterbending is still a bit on the novice side, if you would like to join us."
"Depends on who is on the team."
"Me, Padma, T'kar, Hazaka, and Anna."
He arched a brow. "Korra's daughter, eh?" He asked and Mala nodded.
He thought it over then nodded. "I'll join you. And if it were anyone else, I'd have said no."
Mala nodded. Her reason for choosing these five were because she's known them for years and could trust them with her life.
"Be ready tomorrow morning. We'll meet at the Spirit Portal in downtown Republic City."
He nodded then Mala and Zira left for their house. Asami had a house as big as the Sato Estate to accommodate the Avatar and a fully grown Sabertooth Moose Lion built for them. Zira curled up in the living room and fell asleep while Mala went up to her room, packed a few things for the trip, then passed out in her bed.
That's chapter one.
Before y'all say anything, yes I know that forming the new Team Avatar was a bit rushed and I'm sorry that. But once I got the idea for this chapter and the second part, I couldn't slow down.
Anyway, review and I'll post more chapters
