There's one word for how Ash Ketchum makes Goh feel: electric.
There's one word for how Ash Ketchum makes Goh feel: electric.
Ash and Pikachu were on a whole other level. Goh had watched them battle and they were a powerful pair, to be sure. But this battle showed Goh how shockingly small his perspective was, and reminded him why he was better equipped for the lab and couldn't ever do what Ash and Pikachu did. Even the Pokémon World Coronation Series opening match between Leon and Lance, massive and awesome as it was, didn't fully capture the degree to which two Trainers' competitiveness could grip the heart!
On the opposite side of things, it reminded Goh that Gym Leaders weren't opponents to scoff at just because taking them down was so routine. It was their job to jolt and supercharge a Trainer's growth, and therefore they purposely held back in Gym battles.
Not so here.
Kanto's burning "gonna getcha" destiny collided with Sinnoh's stand-up "in it to win it" heroism.
Their battling may have been bracketed under Ultra Class, but for Goh, it might've been up there in Master Class, befitting the Champion Ash was, but who nobody was talking about.
The speed of the returns. The strategic exploitation of status conditions.
The crash and clash of Iron Tails.
That Z-Move!
Volkner and Electivire were on fire as well. At two points, Electivire was actually on fire thanks to his Fire Punch.
Yet Ash sparked Goh's admiration. He absorbed the energy of each hit like Electivire's Motor Drive, till his fighting spirit and Pikachu's attacks were amplified and they gleamed more intensely than the lights of any city Electivire could power for a year.
Shining through their skin.
Burning Volkner and Electivire's engine out.
Stunning the audience.
Paralyzing Goh.
This was the true Ash Ketchum. The Ash Ketchum who struck him with a 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt!
Goh was on electric terrain.
