"You know not all men are created equally," said Hisashi Midoriya to his son as he put the finishing touches on the device he was currently working he turned to look at his son who ignored what he said he got up to and started walking over to him, Hisashi Midoriya was a tall thin man with unkempt dark hair, the bags under his green eyes showed his lack of sleep which was self-imposed so he could work on his inventions even longer, he walked over to where his son sat; still ignoring him, as Hisashi walked his lab coat covered in green stains flapped around wildly before he suddenly grabbed his son and shook him violently "Come on I'm trying to say something profound and wise over here the least you could do is pay attention to me," he whined as his son tried to break free his grip on him.
"Come on cut it out dad," said Izuku Midoriya in an annoyed tone, when he looked up his emerald green eyes locked onto his father as a scowl formed on his face, Izuku Midoriya let out a groan when he still couldn't get away from his dad, he sighed when saw that it was useless "Yeah, yeah I know how it goes," he said in a huff.
"While some foolishly chase dreams, others forge their own future," they both said Hisashi proudly and Izuku boredly
"Dad no offence but you say this every time you attempt this and every time it blows up in your face most of the time literally," said Izuku, pouting as he saw his father was already ignoring him so he could inspect his newest device, Izuku wasn't surprised at his father's behaviour; even before his obsession; his father was never around that much when he was younger, the fact that he was in the same room as him, was a miracle but he wished his dad would make an effort to be with him, after watching his dad fawn over that stupid machine in his hands Izuku finally caved and asked "What even is that thing?" the excitement in Izuku's voice was very obvious, he may have found his father's behaviour annoying but he couldn't deny more often than not he made amazing inventions he just wished his father cared about him as much as he cared about his machines.
Hisashi turned to look at his son a smile spreading across his face, Hisashi cleared his throat and stood up straight so he could brag about his latest invention "This is the Ecto-Filtrator as you are well aware my ghost portal is fueled by pure Ectoplasmic energy but that is just the initial phase, once the ghost portal is fully operational it will begin to draw fuel from the ghost world itself and that's when this bad boy will come in; it will filter out all foreign material from the Ectoplasmic Energy which can cause the fuel to become very unstable, so you see with this device I can eliminate that pesky problem of blowing up," he said showing off the metal rectangular box with a large vial that had the words Ecto-purifier written on it in English while the box also had Ecto-Filtrator in English.
Izuku, of course, knew he was talking about the discovery he made while he was in America eight years ago where he found a secret underground lab full of so-called "ghost research" he remembered his mom yelling at Hisashi about him quitting his job so he could focus on this stuff, so it was no surprise to him when his parents got divorced at least he got to spend time with both of them without them always arguing, Izuku honestly thought the all this ghost science research was bullshit but he couldn't deny that the green goo that his dad had found was very useful being able to be turned into different forms of matter and was a great source of energy but why he needed to waste that rare material on a ghost portal was beyond his understanding.
"So kiddo wanna help me get this bad boy set up I'm at least 75% sure this one won't expose us to any deadly radiation," Hisashi said nonchalantly already dragging Izuku over to the octagon-shaped ghost portal but Izuku seemed to focus more on what his father had just said.
"What do you mean by this one not causing radiation," he asked with the worry in his voice obvious and the look of horror on his face clear as day.
"Oh, that don't worry about it," Hisashi said without elaborating any further about that subject.
As they reached the portal Hisashi quickly let go of Izuku to install his newly made Ecto-Filtrator, while Hisashi was doing that Izuku ran his hand over the edge of the ghost portal his mind occupied by what his father had sacrificed just reach this goal he had sold his support tech company over to Shield industries, ended his marriage and Izuku was afraid that once his dad finally got this machine working he would abandon him as well, but until then Izuku was determined to spend as much time with his father even if it killed him and if Izuku could achieve his dream of being a hero maybe his father would finally care about him; Izuku thought with a sad smile on his face.
Hisashi noticed his son had been staring at the ghost portal for a couple of minutes now but thought it best to give him space he figured he was thinking about school since starting next week he would be starting his third year in middle school and him not having a quirk would make it difficult but Hisashi believed he had no reason to worry about his son's school life what worried him was what he planned to do after he finished middle school;l when he heard his son wanted to attend his Alma Mater: UA high he was excited cause he thought Izuku was trying to be a support tech inventor like him but that excitement had turned to pure terror when he learned he wanted to try out for the hero course he knew there was nothing wrong in trying but the thought of his son being so hell-bent on this dream of his terrified him the fact that he was quirkless meant he already had no chance in passing their entrance exam but he knew that wouldn't stop him, this was actually part of what led to Hisashi and Inko splitting up she wasn't too happy with Hisashi making Izuku believe he could actually be a hero and Hisashi was appalled that Inko wouldn't even believe in her own son's dream; Hisashi believed that Izuku needed to see for himself that being a hero without a quirk was impossible if people kept on telling him he couldn't do it he would just try to prove them wrong Izuku may not have inherited neither his nor Inko's quirk but he had gotten their stubbornness and that made him just as dangerous, so what Hisashi needed to do was put some false hope in him and when he eventually fails he would come to realize that being a hero was just a pipe dream for him and he would be ready to pick a different course to study at UA, Hisashi knew it was a terrible thing to do to his son but at some point he knew izuku would come to thank him for it.
Hisashi quickly shook his head so he could focus on his work, out of the corner of his eye he saw Izuku moving over to the power cables that would help jump-start the ghost portal "Careful not to touch that Izuku or you'll get nothing short of 50 million volts of electricity running right through you and trust me it won't be a pretty sight," Hisashi said while he attached the final tube from the Ecto-Filtrator to the ghost portal.
Izuku noticed his father was finally done with attaching the Ecto-filtration device to the ghost portal and quickly went to his side where Hisashi was putting on a pair of dark goggles while standing next to a lever as Izuku got closer his dad without even looking thrust one of the goggles at him while motioning for him to put them on "Trust me kiddo machines like these tend to get bright and believe me having your cornea's being fried suck just as much as being electrocuted," Hisashi said very nonchalantly ignoring the incredulous look his son gave him.
Izuku was excited, to say the least after 8 years of his father working on this project both of them finally got see the results together "Alright once I pull this lever your father is about to be the most famous person on the planet," said Hisashi proudly to Izuku, "So get ready cause by the count of three, get ready for me to make a tear in the fabric of space-time," said Hisashi excitedly.
"Yeah...Wait do what now?" Izuku asked his initial excitement turning to confusion.
"3."
"2."
"1, GO!." Hisashi said with a yell.
And with the pull of the lever, the ghost portal shuddered to life it began to shoot sparks before it suddenly went silent and became as cold and lifeless as every other machine in the lab, Izuku was a bit disappointed at the result of his father's hard work but what Izuku was feeling was nothing compared to his father Hisashi who had fallen to his knees, overwhelming despair taking over him; thoughts of what he had sacrificed in his pursuit of ghosts had surfaced to his mind with a yell of pain and anger a torrent of fire escaped his mouth the heat causing Izuku to cry out in pain as the right side of his face got caught in the flame he stumbled away blindly from his father and in doing so had tripped and tumbled into the presumed malfunctioning ghost portal Izuku tried to hold onto the wall inside the ghost portal so he could stand up.
*CLICK* this was the sound that accompanied what would change Izuku Midoriya's life forever, just before the light from the portal enveloped him he thought to himself "What kind of idiot puts the ON button inside the machine." and with that Izuku was blinded by the light and energy from the ghost portal.
