PROLOGUE

"They're not real!" a golden tabby she-cat with black speckles hissed in another cat's face. "This cat is only going to cause trouble!" She pinned down a silver she-cat.

The silver she-cat flinched and struggled underneath her opponent's weight. "Leopardstar, calm down! RiverClan is fully out of the danger. The cat is alone, remember?"

Leopardstar sighed and rested on her haunches, releasing her grip. "I'm sorry, Willowshine," she apologized. "But I'm sure the stories she tells are only tall tales."

Willowshine looked away. "If she even tells them."

A blue-furred she-cat with ocean-blue eyes padded out from behind a clump of reeds. "What's the commotion going on here about?" She scanned the nervous gazes of Leopardstar and Willowshine.

"We're talking about the new cat," Leopardstar meowed. "Do you think she can be trusted, Mistystar?"

Mistystar flicked her tail anxiously. "Frankly, I'm more concerned about the safety of RiverClan. According to the legends-"

"'According to the legends' isn't going to help much," Willowshine corrected. "We have to focus on what really happened. Was there any danger?" She stared firmly at the two former RiverClan leaders.

Mistystar and Leopardstar exchanged glances. "I suppose it would be worth seeing the past," Mistystar finally decided.

The area around the cats blurred until it became so mixed up it was impossible to tell where they were. Then the mixture subsided and Willowshine stood up, heading away in a brisk trot. The other two she-cats followed her closely.

Willowshine stopped at a beach and motioned to Mistystar and Leopardstar to follow. She scaled a rock and sat down in a comfortable position. Her companions did the same.

A ripple in the water alerted the she-cats. Willowshine let a faint smile loose. A glimpse of the past was all the leaders needed to see that there was no danger to be feared.

The she-cat winced as a rumble of thunder erupted over her head. The storm wouldn't be impossible to navigate through, surely?

Maybe I should have stayed with them, she thought. She flicked her ears. Whatever had happened in the past wasn't important now. Now which way was it…?

As she bounded through the forest, she began to realize that she was winding up in circles. She recognized a rock she passed only minutes earlier. The she-cat began contemplating trying to retrace her steps back to the town. Then she could locate the water and swim the rest of the way. But at this point, it might not even be worth it to try.

I'm so sorry, you three, she thought sadly. I don't know if I can find my way back. Please try to find me, at least.

Suddenly, a tail tapped her shoulder. For a heartbeat, hope rose in the she-cat's chest, but as she turned around, it faded. Before her stood a white she-cat with black speckles and blue eyes.

"Greetings," the she-cat meowed.

The cat hissed. "I don't have time for this! Have you seen three-"

The she-cat purred. "I know what you're looking for, and no, I haven't. My name is Brambleberry. Come with me. You have a task."

"I don't have time for this," the she-cat snarled. She turned her back on Brambleberry defiantly. "I have to find my friends."

Brambleberry sighed. "You have to. I promise, in the end, you will be reunited with them. But first, you must complete my job. Or you can stay here lost in the rain…" She smirked.

The she-cat paused. "Alright."

Brambleberry looked her in the eyes. "Here is your task. I will take you somewhere, but I cannot go everywhere with you. As soon as I leave you, follow the river. You will find a group of cats who share the same interest in water as you do. No matter how they treat you, stay with them. Help them, for a great storm, even worse than this, is coming. Guide them through it. After all, during one storm many things were revealed to you, correct?" She gazed at the she-cat expectantly.

The she-cat looked at her paws. "Yes."

Brambleberry continued. "Then, as soon as your task is completed, you will be able to return and be reunited."

The she-cat's head was swimming with the instructions, but she nodded. "I will do this, if it means I can return."

Brambleberry purred again and swished her tail, then took off into the undergrowth. The she-cat quickly followed, her paws skimming easily over the ground.

Eventually, the surroundings around her grew hazy and once the blur lifted, she didn't recognize where she was. But Brambleberry continued on so she did the same.

The speckled she-cat stopped and whisked around. "This is where we part ways. Remember my directions and whatever you do, do not give up."

The she-cat recognized her own words she had once said in the ending of Brambleberry's farewell. She dipped her head and watched as the cat's shape faded into an outline, which smiled before disappearing completely.

The she-cat faced the river and flexed her claws anxiously.

I am so sorry. But as soon as I complete this task, I promise, I will come back.
