(A/N: I have had the incredible privilege of reading the new "Frozen II: Dangerous Secrets, a Iduna and Agnarr story" and I thought it was amazing. The interaction between the two was perfect. There may have been a couple of different things I wish they answered, but the book was incredible nonetheless. I would love to see a movie of them before revisiting Elsa and the others after Frozen II. I've had this idea for quite a long while, but I held off since we were getting a book on the two. I may take some inspiration from the book with this story. To avoid the typical Northuldra origin for Iduna, I am going to attempt something brand new for her and Agnarr. Let me know if you are an Agduna shipper. They are definitely one of my top three ships in the franchise. This story is also inspired by the Twisted Tales series, which explores darker versions of iconic Disney characters. I personally didn't think "Conceal, Don't Feel" was dark enough compared to others I've read like "A Whole New World" or "As Old As Time.")
CHAPTER ONE: A BROKEN PROMISE
(IDUNA'S POV)
I'd like to say this was a beautiful story where everyone got a happy ending, but unfortunately, it's not. You may have grown up hearing stories of how the world is a beautiful and magical place, where creatures of myths secretly roamed amongst us and people would eventually end up in a castle and live happily ever after with royalty. I regret telling you that's not how the real-world works. At least, not mine. In my world, there is no magic. There are no mythical creatures. There are no magical wishes. Innocent and pure dreams never come true. Promises in my world are only as good as stale, dry bread. I used to believe in the world you believe in and often I close my eyes and pretend I was that ignorant little girl who was sheltered from the cruelty that is life. Then, I would wake up and realize all over again that it was all a lie. A beautiful lie replaced with the cold, ugly truth. My parents both joined Arendelle's military forces, as a soldier and shield maiden, pledging their lives and loyalty to King Runeard, all so that I could live the life I always dreamed of and in peace.
"You can't come with us, Iduna," my father, Tora, laughed. "You're just a child."
Just a child. Those words angered me. "I'm strong. I can fight," I insisted. I hated being treated like a helpless, fragile girl that couldn't take care of herself.
"I know you are," my father smiled with pride as he stroked my small cheeks in hopes of calming me, "You are only twelve years old. Arendelle's military will still be there when you turn twenty-one. Then and only then will your mother and I allow you. Until then, mind your manners and listen to Lord Peterssen. If you understand, say yes."
I ignored him and just stared down at the ground with anger and shaking fists. "Iduna," my father called, but I remained silent. My frustration and disappointment turned to tears that I struggled to keep from flowing down my cheeks. I suddenly couldn't hold back my tears when I felt my father's warm arms embrace me. "Your day will come. You'll be a great leader, Iduna, because your strong and fearless. What did I ever do to earn such an amazing daughter?"
I smiled, still crying, and looked up at him, "Okay, Papa."
My father ruffled my hair, making me laugh before planting a peck on my forehead and walking away. "Your father and I will return with King Runeard in two weeks. We'll drive the enemy forces invading Arendelle away and will be back before you know it," my mother, Greta said after entering the room for her father.
I ran to my mother, who too was dressed for war and wielding her large circular shield, hugging her firmly, "Promise?"
"Yes, my little Iduna. I promise," my mother spoke with a maternal smile and kissing my cheek. She looked over at my father and said, "It's time. Halden, Halima, Mattias and the others are waiting for us at the Royal Palace."
My father gave her a nod and I followed them out to the door where they introduced me to a man dressed with medals. He was obviously someone important. "This Lord Peterssen, Iduna. He's the advisor of King Runeard and a good friend of ours. He's going to look after you while we're away. Do as you he tells you."
I nodded and stood beside Lord Peterssen as we watched my parents join the gathered forces that filled the street. King Runeard led the forces out of Arendelle. Behind him were six Royal Guard and behind them were the rest of the forty thousand of soldiers and shield maidens while twenty thousand of the remaining forces remained behind to protect Arendelle. The ground shook as the army marched off and the eyes of the people of Arendelle watched the large army march off to war.
I walked out into the streets and watched as the army disappeared from my sight. Lord Peterssen came up behind me and patted my shoulder. "Come with me. It's time I took you to your home for the next two weeks."
"Yeah, two weeks," I repeated. I have never been apart from my parents longer than a day before. How am I going to survive two weeks without them?
Lord Peterssen must've felt my nervousness and dread, because he quickly spoke up, "Two weeks will be nothing, Iduna. Some friends of mine have children. I'll introduce them and they can provide some company while your parents are away. It'll be good to have friends your age to socialize with."
Nearly two passed, more quickly than I imagined in would. Lord Peterssen was right. It was good to have friends to be with while my parents were away. When two weeks nearly reached its end, I would often go out to where I watched the army disappear and watch the end of the road for anyone to come back. The more she waited, the more anxious and antsy she got, clenching her fists and unclenching anxiously. Where are you? You promised. You promise.
She became more alert when Lord Peterssen came by her side, "They'll come. You'll see." Just then they heard a horse and a wagon full of wounded Arendellean soldiers. Iduna's eyes quickly searched for her parents as Lord Peterssen halted the wagon and asked, "What happened?!"
Captain Halden, Lieutenant Mattias, Shield Maiden Halima and a few more all looked down. Mattias spoke up, "The forces of Arendelle successfully drove the enemy forces away from Arendelle, but…everyone else…King Runeard…they're all-"
"NO!" Iduna yelled, refusing to accept her parents were dead. Lord Peterssen quickly hugged her to comfort her, holding her firmly close as she trashed in his arms and screaming, "THEY'RE NOT DEAD! THEY'RE NOT DEAD!"
The survivors all looked down in shame, feeling her pain themselves. News quickly spread of the crippling loss Arendelle suffered. No amount of mourning was going to help the people heal, because that day, the spirit of Arendelle was torn in half as it descended into Hell.
