In ancient times, the land lay covered in forests, wherefrom ages long past dwelt the spirits of the Gods.
Untamed the forests were vast, growing wildly along the mountains. Below the tree line lay a veil of mist, so closed off that almost no light would pass through the leaves and vines to illuminate the shadows, leaving the forest dark and mysterious.
Back then man and beast lived in harmony. But as time went by most of the great forests were destroyed. Those that remained were guarded by gigantic beasts, who owed their allegiance to the Great Forest Spirit.
For those were the days of Gods...and Demons.
Path of Fate
The midday sun hung high in the sky with not a cloud in sight, as expected amid the warm grip of the summer season. It's harsh, golden rays bore down on the land, leaving the day hot and dry, with only a light breeze for relief. The only sounds to be heard were the soft chatter of birds and murmurings of other animals going about their daily business.
Then all fell unnaturally quiet.
The sharp sound of branches snapped in the stillness. Then out of the forest emerged a magnificent elk-like creature, its body covered in soft red fur, all except for a tan-coloured marking's adorning its forehead and running along the underside of its jaw down its thick muscled neck and underbelly. Long, elegant, ridged horns protruded from on top of its head. Its build was lithe yet sturdy with muscle and deceivingly thin but powerful legs that could send it flying through the air in a split second, with incredible speed and agility.
Although this was not a wild beast of the native wood, clear by the presence of the human figure sat astride on its back. The young animal trotted down a heavily used path with a stone wall running along one side, allowing the person to quickly dismount and stand upon it. The young woman turned her face skyward, her long wave of black hair pulled up high into a ponytail, the loose tendrils catching lightly in the gentle breeze. Her deep brown eyes squinted at the overbearing light, as much as she tried to shield them with a cupped hand at her brow.
She carefully scanned her surroundings with a focused gaze, taking in everything around her with extreme interest whilst making her way along the wall cautiously.
It had gotten far too quiet for her liking. She'd not recently ventured out for her daily patrol from her home village before her gut feeling started to tighten itself. Her senses automatically rose on high alert, she couldn't ignore the increasing uneasiness that began to rise within her. She hadn't managed to shake it off the entire ride up if anything it had only gotten harder to ignore.
"Yakul!" She called softly over her shoulder to the elk– "c' mon boy!"
The animal came to her side, responding instantly not breaking a stride as she set about mounting his back again, before continuing to gallop onwards.
They travelled further up the well-worn path, suddenly spotting three small figures heading their way at a brisk pace. As she closed in the girl could see they were, in fact, children from her village, with straw hats on their heads and baskets strapped over their shoulders an easily recognizable feature. They were most likely sent out foraging that morning…but they shouldn't be on their way back yet.
One of them, a young boy having spotted her approach ran straight for her.
He yelled as he came to a halt in front of her. "Big Sis your here!"
"Sota!" She answered back as she brought Yakul up beside them. "Glad I found you." Her voice was full of fondness as she smiled down at the boy who was none other than her kid brother. Though it quickly morphed into one of pressing concern "You have to head back quickly, the high priestess is calling everyone back to the village!"
"We just came from the Old Man," Sota exclaimed, quickly pointing back in the direction they had just come. "He said the same thing!"
The young woman furrowed her brow at that. "Did he see anything?"
"Yes in the f-forest." Sota's voice wavered. "Something's wrong!"
"The birds are all gone!" One of the other boys chimed in.
"The animals too!" The third added and all three boys looked visibly confused and nervous.
This in turn only further invoked the young woman's feeling of uneasiness. A part of her would have preferred her instincts were wrong, that she was just being paranoid…but at the same time, she was thankful she had taken them seriously now. Unfortunately, her gut feeling had yet to fail her.
'I have to find out what's going on here!' She thought inwardly.
"Kagome…" The unstable note in her brother's voice snatched from her thoughts. Looking down at his face it was clear to her despite his valiant efforts to appear unaffected, he was slowly being consumed by anxiousness.
"Don't worry…" Her smile was everpresent as she spoke, trying to make her voice soothing to the boys' and they visibly appeared calmer at her reassurance. "…I'll go to the watchtower and check on him." Her hands clenched on the reins, steeling her determination. "You three go straight back home, don't stop until you get there!"
She waited long enough to get an affirming nod from all three boys before she took off.
"Be careful!" Sota called after her, turning away to obey her command.
The tall log structure of the watchtower, bound together with ropes and twine complete with a heavy straw roof, soon came into her view as Yakul crested the rise of the hill. Kagome could see the Old Man, also known as her grandfather, perched high up in the bird's nest overlooking the forest, seemingly safe and sound.
As Yakul approached she readjusted the bow and quiver she carried to a more comfortable position, before steering him near one of the supporting pillars. Once within her reach, she wasted no time in ascending the log stairs.
Mid-way up she halted catching movement in the corner of her eye, turning sharply towards the trees below. At first glance nothing seemed out of place, everything was surprisingly still, even the wind had died down. That's what bothered her…it seemed too still…
"Something's there." She murmured under breath, before resuming her climb till she reached the top.
"Grandpa, did you see that?" She asked hauling herself up in and coming up beside the elderly man, her gaze never leaving the greenery.
"Yes," His hoarse voice replied, his eyes also remained forward. "But whatever it is…I don't think it's human."
Looking back over her shoulder from this height Kagome could now see the village in the distance. She could make out distant figures of the villagers rushing around heading for the entranceway, retreating to the safety of their homes.
Her grandfather's urgent tone drew her back instantly. "Look there!"
Facing the forest once again she couldn't see anything, but her instincts screamed at her as to otherwise. She angled her body further forward, her gaze narrowed as she stared harder determined not to miss a thing.
It paid off. This time she watched as branches began moving, parting in the wake of something making its way along the forest edge towards them.
On impulse she readied her bow with practised ease, grasping and lining up her arrow and aiming for the treeline with a steady hand.
Something was there alright. She could feel it. Heading their way…and it was dangerous.
The silence was almost deafening, the atmosphere thick with anticipation as the two people in the watchtower remained unmoving, watching and waiting. Around them, nothing stirred…no birds, no animals calls…no faint breeze whistling through the leaves. Though very much on edge Kagome stood primed and ready to strike, posed with bated breath.
Then it happened.
Amidst the shadows, the trees began to rapidly wither and die, their vibrant verdant leaves shrivelled into a horrid, rust-brown crumbling away into mere dust between one breath and the next. Once rich mossy trunks dissolved to pitch-black leaving only deformed, hollow shells behind. It was as if the life was being sucked clean out of them!
Kagome let out a deep breath she didn't realize she was holding; she would never have believed what was happening if she wasn't seeing it with her own eyes. Yet astonishingly that wasn't what caught her attention the most.
The stone wall marking the border of their land to the forest appeared to take on an animated life of its own. She stared, grossly mesmerized as strange worm-like creatures emerged and danced about on its surface, turning the large white stones to stain a distasteful red.
'What is that?' She couldn't help but wonder in horror.
Without warning the wall exploded altogether, massive stones sent flying whichever way…giving way to an even more horrific sight. A gigantic twisted…creature…of some sort was the only way she could describe it. The being appeared to be made up of the same black worm-like essence, with multiple legs protruding from the main body and a pair of fiery red, eyes glowing at the forefront. Almost spider-like.
Having broken through the wall, whatever it was, charged head-on across the lush field of the valley.
"It's a demon!" Her grandfather cried in horror.
Kagome whipped her head round to him in shock. "A demon?" She repeated, slightly dumbfounded as if that word alone could make sense of the events unfolding in front of them.
It did offer some clarity; the lack of animals, the dying trees, and the ominous aura that she had been sensing this whole time. Without a doubt, this was the source of it.
'So…this is a demon' She wondered idly.
She'd never seen one in the flesh before. Sure she like the rest of the young people in the village had been told terrible, foreboding stories about them.
"Now got to sleep or the ghouls will get you!"
"Do as your mother says or you'll turn into a demon!"
A clever tactic meant to frighten and keep them in line as children. But as she took in the sight of the beast below, the dark trail of decay and destruction it left in its wake, dead grass and earth now the colour of a deep rich crimson almost like fresh blood. She couldn't help but think those stories were nothing compared to the real thing…and not in a good way.
It made straight for the tower breaking from the line of shadows from the treeline. Yet the instant it stepped forth into the light, the beast halted, the worm-like creatures manically flying skyward to reveal what was underneath. In the shape of a massive brown wolf.
The large carnivore was covered in blood and deep, gaping wounds, it snarled viciously, the sound echoing through the air, rumbling right through her. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end, an involuntary shiver zipped down her spine with the ferocity of it. As levelheaded as she was she would be a fool not to be shaken by it even a little. Yet despite that, she still fought to gulp down past her growing fear and gather her courage to the forefront. She had to be strong right now!
The great wolf howled as the flurry of worms all at once descended, returning to envelop the animal in the black ball once again, morphing back into the spider-like creature. Just as quickly it resumed its manic charge.
As the proximity of the beast rapidly grew closer the young woman's heartbeat hammered in her ears as she looked down to Yakul below…who was still standing steadfast in its path.
"Run, Yakul! Run!" She shrieked down frantically.
One look and she could see it was no use, the poor creature was frozen with terror, trembling violently hackles raised, very much aware of the danger that advanced towards him but powerless to do a thing about it.
Without a second thought, she aimed and shot an arrow at the pillar closest to him, jerking him from the fear-driven state, he managed to get clear just in time as the demon collided with the base of the tower. The log structure gave way with the force and started to crumble beneath their feet. Kagome wasted no time in grabbing her grandfather to jump clear, landing in the safety of a nearby tree canopy to break their fall.
Having laid waste to the tower, it didn't take long for the demon to catch sight of the village in the distance and proceed with the unbridled fury of speed in its direction.
"It's heading for the village! I need to stop it before it's too late!" The young girl exclaimed in a panic, clambering down from a branch to jump to the forest floor.
"Kagome, wait!" The Old Man tried to protest, all the while knowing full well it was a futile effort.
His granddaughter was a strong-willed girl with a big heart, which normally meant she put other's needs in front of her own. This was a prime example. The entire village was at stake and all the lives within it. As it's princess how could she do any less at that moment than risk her life to protect it?
Resigning himself to that truth, he called after her with a warning instead.
"Be careful, that creature is cursed, don't let it touch you!"
Taking note of his words, Kagome ran towards the cliff top where the tower once stood, whistling for Yakul, whilst reading her bow with a new string. The old one had snapped off in the fall. As Yakul galloped on past her she reached out, skilfully latching onto his nearest horn as leverage to haul herself up.
They made their way down the steep side of the cliff at top speed, hopping on rocks, sprinting through the trees and bushes with the young elk's great agility. They came to a rugged path that led down the hillside towards the village. Suddenly the great demon burst from the shrubbery behind them.
"Please calm yourself!" Kagome pleaded with a strong voice turning to face the ragging beast hot on their tail. "Whatever you are, God or demon please, leave us in peace!"
Unfortunately, her desperate cries did nothing to appease the rampaging creature.
Breaking the treeline into a large field at first the beast was focused on the girl in its path. However, Sota and his friends were still in their retreat back to the village, and the boys could only watch helplessly as the creature pivoted in their direction slowly…before resuming its charge. Sota hurried his friends to start running.
"Please! Stop! Go back! Leave our village alone! Please!" Kagome begged. "Stop please! STOP!"
Whilst fleeing one of the young boys suddenly tripped and fell. Sota yelled for their other friend to help him up whilst drawing the short blade at his hip, turning to face the demon head-on. He tried to put on a brave front in the face of what was inevitable death, even with the slight shake to his shoulders.
"Sota!" Kagome cried as the fear overwhelmed her all at once. Without thinking she drew and shot an arrow straight into one of the beasts blazing red eyes.
The creature screeched in horrific pain focusing its rage once again on the dark-haired girl as she swerved out of the path of the boys, allowing them time to escape.
As it gave chase its worm-like essence gathered together to form black tendrils that shot forth from its body like a gigantic snake towards her. She spurred Yakul on faster, trying to keep ahead of the beast.
Sadly, it wasn't far enough.
The writhing appendage of black mass reached out and wrapped around her right arm, burning through her clothes and skin. Somehow Kagome managed to push through the indescribable pain that shot through her at that moment, using all her remaining strength to succeed in ripping her arm free from its grasp.
Turning Yakul in a sharp arc she charged full-on back at the beast, aiming once again. Paying no mind to the agonizing sensation coursing through her entire body, keeping her aim as steady as possible, she shot another arrow.
It hit home with a sickening crack - directly between the creature's eyes. The demon wailed yet again, but this time it stilled its movements. The black worms encompassing it becoming nothing but lifeless dark sludge between one breath and the next, that fell from the wounded body of the giant wolf beneath.
All stood still for a moment, till the deafening crash as the creature fell to the ground on its side echoed across the land.
Yakul slowed to a stop, sensing his master's pain. The young woman on his back whimpered as the tendrils on her arm also turned to sludge. The searing heat was beyond unbearable, the dark matter suddenly began to bubble and spit with a sickening sound, melting away the material of her sleeve as it dripped to the floor. There was so much pain she feared it would overwhelm her as she gritted her teeth tightly. But at least she managed to stop the demon.
"She did it, she killed it!"
"Big sis!"
"Someone fetch the priestess!"
Men from the village, having heard the demon's body colliding with the earth were now running towards the site. Sota was the first to reach his sister carefully helping to ease her off her mounts back.
"Kagome, you're hurt…" Sota murmured slowly reaching for her.
"Sota, don't touch it!" Kagome stressed weakly, but made it no less imperative, "This is no ordinary wound…" Hastily she began piling on dirt over it, trying to take some of the burning sensation away, which Sota assisted her with.
"The princess has been hurt!"
"Where's the priestess?"
A few of the men called out, some crowded in around the siblings whilst others cautiously approached the fallen wolf's body.
"All of you! You must keep away from her now! Stay back!"
The crowd turned to spot a man running up the hill towards them, an elderly woman on his back shouting the warning. Dressed in the typical attire of her profession, a white haori, and red hakama, her lengthy grey hair tied at the base of her neck and an eyepatch covered her right eye.
"Lady Kaede!" Sota cried, standing up to meet her.
The elderly priestess slid to stand on the ground handing the boy a brown vase, removing the cap with haste.
"Take this water and pour it over her wound child slowly!" She instructed calmly as Sota proceeded to do just that.
As the water ran over Kagome's wound there was a loud hiss at the contact, steam even emanated from her skin. Clenching her teeth fiercely unable to stop the pained groan that grated her throat, as she tried to withstand the terrible sensation.
Meanwhile, Lady Kaede made her way over the great wolf's wounded body, it's deep heavy pants of breath were all that could be heard as she graciously bowed hands clasped in prayer.
"Oh nameless God of rage and hate, I bow before you." She bowed once more to show her respect. "A mound will be raised and funeral rites performed on this ground where you have fallen. Pass on in peace and bear us no hatred." She asked humbly, bowing one last time.
The wolf, however, snarled viciously despite his state. He was not as appeased or as near respectful with his words that followed.
"Keh disgusting little creatures…" He spat, remnants of the black ooze spilling from his great jaws as his deep, in-human growl of a voice rumbled within his chest as he spoke, "…soon all of you will feel my hate…and suffer as I have suffered…" Those were the first and last words he spoke before the flesh of the wolf's body began to melt away, leaving nothing but a massive charred skeleton and a dark puddle of blood in its wake.
Nighttime soon fell upon the land, the clear blue sky having transformed to a deep mauve colour now decorated with the thousand, tiny, shimmering lights of stars. All was quiet throughout the Higurashi village, several villagers anxiously looking up at the hut situated at the highest point in the complex.
The warm glow of the candle lights filled the room as the council of the small clan gathered together in Lady Kaede's home. Kagome sat as the centrepiece, crossed-legged in the middle of the room facing the old priestess, waiting patiently. Her arm was now clean and bandaged, the pain non-existent compared to what it had been but still a dull ache in her bones.
An assortment of pebbles, bones, and the odd branch laid out on a mat in front of Lady Kaede. Tentatively and without a word she picked up a couple of stones rolling them within her palm, before gently throwing them back to the mat, pausing to examine what she saw.
She was seeking answers, answers that would foretell the path that the young woman before her would have to take.
When she finally spoke, her voice was resolute yet with a hint of something that sounded like defeat, making Kagome's back straighten slightly. That was never a good sign from the wise woman.
"I'm afraid it is very bad news."
Kagome would be lying if she said she hadn't expected this, but she would also be a liar to say that she wasn't anxious about it either.
"The runes tell me the creature was once a wolf god that came from far to the West. He had some kind of an evil poison inside him." The priestess continued her brow furrowed with displeasure. "A poisonous hatred that consumed his heart, corrupting his body and soul; inevitably turning him into a raging demon." She sighed briefly before turning her gaze up. "Princess Kagome."
The girl came to attention. "Yes?"
"Please show everyone your right arm."
Without hesitation, Kagome unravelled the bandage and extended her arm forward to everyone's view. The village council, including her grandfather, let out a small gasp of horror at what they saw. Clear as a day against her pale flesh was a blotchy, dark purple mark spiralling around her forearm…where the demon had touched her.
"What does it mean?" One of the elder men asked.
Instead of responding Lady Kaede kept her gave fixed on Kagome. "My child, are ready to hear the fate that has been foretold for you?"
Kagome nodded affirmatively, though her nerves increased. "Yes, I was prepared the moment I shot my arrow."
And she had been. Letting that arrow fly she had known there would be consequences, whether or not she had been thinking clearly or if it was in defence of her village. She was the only one that had made that choice and therefore she would bear the burden of it.
Lady Kaede nodded in return, taking a short breath before speaking.
"The infection will continue to spread throughout your entire being, through bone and flesh alike. It will cause you great pain and suffering…then eventually kill you."
A moment passed as those words sunk in, Kagome turning her eyes slightly downcast and tipping her head forward in understanding. It didn't mean it was an easy thing to accept. The elders felt the same.
"Is there no way to stop it?!" One protested.
"The princess got that whilst protecting our village and saving all of our lives."
"Do we just sit here and watch her suffer and die!"
Kaede closed her eye. "You can not alter your fate, my dear…" She spoke softly. "…but you may rise to meet it if you so choose, look at this."
Kagome lifted her gaze as the old priestess rummaged through her haori sleeve to retrieve something.
"This iron ball was found deep within the wolf's body." She gently placed a deformed sphere down on the mat. "This is what caused the wolf's torment, wounded him so deeply, shattering his bones and festering in his flesh driving him mad."
Kagome couldn't help the new pain that built within her – resting in her heart. What a horrible thing to have to endure, all that prolonged agony and rage eating away at you. She couldn't help but feel sorrow for the wolf demon, whereas any other more rational being would have thought her the mad one. He had attempted to wipe out her entire village, even cursed her to her death!
But it hadn't been his fault…he hadn't chosen to become a monster, how could she blame him.
Lady Kaede's soothing voice broke her from her thoughts. "I fear that there is great evil occurring in the land of the West Kagome, I believe it is your fate to go there and see what you can see through eyes unclouded by anger or hate. You may even be able to lift the curse that inflicts you…do you understand?"
She did…and it was a harsh truth to accept. Yet Kagome responded as assuredly as she could.
"I do."
Her grandfather looked on at her sadly from across the room. His beautiful, strong granddaughter, one of the kindest and fairest people he knew now had to undergo such an ordeal? What was worse she would have to do it alone. The twisted seeds of fate were too cruel!
Meanwhile, Kagome turned to a small altar to her right, reaching forward she unsheathed a small dagger resting there. Clutching her high ponytail in one hand she brought the short blade beneath her hair tie. She hesitated for all but a second…then cut through. Her hair fell to lightly brush the tops of her shoulders. Throughout the whole process, she kept herself composed and calm, though secretly she would miss her long hair.
She heard a thump behind her, most likely a fist hitting the wooden floor, as well as a couple of sniffles, the hardest one she knew without having to look to be her grandfather's.
"Our laws forbid us from seeing you off Kagome," Kaede spoke, her voice steady but low with a sombre tone. "Whatever should come to pass from now on…I'm afraid you must face alone."
The young woman placed the remnants of her hair upon the altar, replacing the knife and bowing once before moving to stand. She exited the hut and made her way down to the village without a word.
No heartfelt or meaningful goodbyes, no comforting hugs or warm smiles...just the haunting silence of her departure. She had always considered herself to be a strong person, but that was more than she could bear. She silently praised herself for being able to walk out with steady strides.
Her composure faltered however as the tail end of a 'good luck' from the old priestess reached her ears.
Having gathered the necessary supplies for her journey, Kagome fetched herself a hooded cloak that also included a face covering, before making her way over to the stables to collect her faithful friend. Lowering the bar she strapped Yakul up with a bridle and saddle before ushering him out gently with a pull of the reins. Once mounted she began making her way towards the front gates…though she certainly didn't rush.
Something moved within the darkness, then suddenly a figure ran to catch her.
"Kagome!"
Kagome turned towards the voice having known it her whole life.
"Sota what are you doing here? It's forbidden!" She reprimanded though it lacked any kind of bite.
He frowned up at her as if it was a stupid question. "You think I care about that! I came to give you this..." He reached up to her with both hands clenched.
He opened them to reveal a necklace of rounded purple beads with larger white magatama ones spaced out between them "…so you won't forget me." He added jokingly smiling, but his large brown eyes, so similar to her own shimmered.
Kagome reached out tentatively to pluck the necklace from his palms, running her fingers over the smooth surface of the beads. She recognized it instantly.
"Your rosary…Sota I can't-"
"Please take it with you sis, to protect you! Keep it with you for good luck…" His voice began to crack, "…and so that you...always remember." He exclaimed in a rush of breath finished with a whimper.
It was only then that it truly hit Kagome that this was without question the hardest thing she had ever had to do in her young life…maybe even for the rest of it.
For a while now it had only been the two of them. Their father had passed away shortly after Sota was born. Years later their mother lost her battle with sickness before he was but a teenager. Lady Kaede had been kind to them, taking on the main duty of raising them both.
However, Kagome being the oldest had stepped up to be strong for her brother. And now she would most likely never see him again.
Even as heartache and sorrow gripped her, she knew she wouldn't have to worry. Sota was a kind, fair boy among his generation and she had no doubt he would become an even greater man in the future. It was just a cruel tact of fate that she would not be able to witness it.
She could feel her tears threatening to spill, but she didn't want that to be their last goodbye. Instead, she gathered herself smiling sweetly at her brother, placing her hand on his head to ruffle his dark hair soothingly. He sniffled again, then let out a surprised noise as she pinched and pulled his cheek playfully.
"Sota…" She leaned down placing a light kiss on his forehead as she rubbed the hurt on his face "…you know I will never forget you."
Then she left. Off into the night, clutching the rosary in her hand, her tears flying into the wind unseen.
Haori/Hakama - The traditional attire of a Miko would be a pair of red hakama (long, divided trousers) or a long, red, slightly pleated skirt tied with a bow, a white haori (kimono jacket), and some white or red hair ribbons.
Magatama - Curved, comma-shaped beads. They are in the official description of Inuyasha's necklace/prayer beads. It has various names in the story 'Beads of Subjugation' the most common in the English dub, and the actual translation is 'Language Power Rosary'…didn't dig that. So I just referred to it like a rosary.
First things first…
I DO NOT OWN INUYASHA OR PRINCESS MONONOKE! I CLAIM NO CREDIT FOR THEM OR ANY OF THE CHARACTERS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM!
THEY ARE AMAZING PIECES OF ART AND IMAGINATION THAT RESPECTFULLY BELONG TO THEIR RIGHTFUL INGENIOUS OWNERS!
I PROFIT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FORM THIS APART FROM HOPEFULLY WRITING AN INTERESTING STORY THAT PEOPLE WILL LIKE!
*Phew* Now that that's out of the way (and will be present for each chapter as to have no doubt ^^)
So here we are the first chapter of this AU/crossover. Honestly, it's more difficult than you'd think, obviously you have the storyline all done for you but it's all the emotion, internal thinking, and description going on behind that that is a mystery. But it's fun to come up with all that at the same time.
Anyway, hope you guys like it so far!~ ^^
And yes I did change up some details to make it more compatible with the Inuyasha series. I changed the boars to wolves…primarily because when I depict the scene later in the movie with all the dead boars coming back from the dead, I couldn't help but think of what happened with Koga and his wolf demons – that's my reasoning anyway. I know it's kinda altering Princess Mononoke but it's more taking its story and putting Inuyasha characters in it May even add some extra scenes of my own, maybe a few points of view scenes…we'll see~
If you have any questions, of course, let me know I'll do my best to answer. And of course, reviews are appreciated…good and bad (within reason) ^-^ gotta take everything with a pinch of salt as they say.
~Please stay tuned for more~
Till next time guys! Bye! CIPHER x ;)
