Happy reading,
D.H Caldwell and HAS5245
Andy looked at her sleeping husband lying next to her. Last night had been a long night where they stayed up talking, talking about anything and everything. These talks had become some sort of a weekly tradition a month ago when Robert came home from rehab. The late night talks were recommended by their marriage counselor that they started seeing when he came back. She smiled at him as she watched him sleep; she was so proud of him and everything he had accomplished over the past few months. They were able to work through the road bumps in their marriage with their love for eachother becoming even stronger than ever, and he was fully committed to staying clean and sober. After a few months of having Battalion Chief Richard Squires in charge, the board was ready to promote Robert to that position in gratitude for his honesty during everything that happened with Chief Dixon. Andy was ecstatic that he was going to become the Fire Chief of Seattle in a few short weeks, she knew he deserved it. She had to admit though that some of her excitement stemmed from her and Maya's promotions. Maya was going to be the new battalion chief while Andy was going to take over as Captain of 19. Jack had been giving her crap about Robert picking her over him, but was nonetheless supportive of her. He was her best friend of course, her person, the one she told everything besides Robert. Andy reached over and kissed her husband before getting up to get ready for work. She decided to make him breakfast that morning and quietly slipped into the kitchen without him noticing.
Robert woke up about twenty minutes after Andy had gone to make breakfast and turned to her side of the bed, surprised not to see her there. He stretched as he got up and walked into the kitchen, figuring that's where she would be. "Mmmm, something smells good in here. Bacon?", he asked as he stole a piece from the plate on the island.
Andy chuckled as she playfully slapped his hand out of the way of the plate, "It's not done yet. I still have to make the omelette", she chuckled as he came up behind her and put his hands around her waist, kissing her.
"It looks done to me. And you look absolutely gorgeous", he smiled as she put her hand on his chest and kissed him back, passionately.
"You know I do. Now, I made you breakfast and coffee because I have to go to work and watch my husband get sworn in as the new fire chief tonight", Andy smiled as she reached over and grabbed his coffee mug for him, handing it to him. "A drop of milk and a Stevia, just like you like it"
"You have to watch your husband? Huh, that's funny because I have to get my wife settled in as the new captain of 19 tomorrow", he smirked as he sipped his coffee.
"Maybe we should tell them about us?"Andy chuckled as she sipped her coffee.
Robert laughed, "They are us. In a few short hours, I will be chief of the city and you will be captain, finally. Do you have everything ready for tonight?"
Andy nodded affirmatively as she chewed a piece of bacon, "Your dress uniform and my dress are all dry cleaned and ready to go in my car so we can just get ready at the station. Now, let's go to work so that tonight, you and I can come home and celebrate, if you know what I mean"
"I like the sound of that", Robert answered, smiling, as they left his apartment and went to work, blissfully unaware that the night would be anything but celebratory and that life as they knew it would change in an instant. Both looked forward to being able to spend their night together, but neither knew that it would in a strange turn of events be their last day together.
When they got to the station, Robert went to his office while Andy went to Maya's and plopped herself down in a chair. She spun around in it while Maya finished signing off on a stack of papers the chief had given her. "You didn't call me back last night. Gibson was blowing up your phone with texts, what did he want now?", Maya asked, looking up from the stack and setting it aside. She needed to give herself a break to talk to her friend. She was trying her best to make up for all the lost time where they were fighting, but it wasn't easy and they still weren't all the way back yet.
Andy let out a loud laugh, "Oh nothing, Jack texted me last night about his date with that Grey Sloan nurse I set him up with. And boy is he pissed"
"And how was it? Is there going to be a second date?" Maya asked
"God no, apparently she has 10 cats. And get this, they're all named after patients" Andy laughed, shaking her head.
"And you didn't know that before you set him up? Andy!" Maya scolded, shaking her head at Andy.
"Hey, don't blame me. Talk to your girlfriend, because she's the one who told me about her. I honestly had no clue until I got like a million texts about how he always gets the weird people", Andy laughed as they heard the alarm blaring. "19, all units, 568 Neilson Rd, Nielsen Trash Facility fire, 5 alarms, multiple wounded"
Andy raced into the locker room to get ready as the rest of the crew started putting on their gear. "We haven't had a five alarm sinceā¦.", she started, only for Travis to cut her off.
"Pac North, I know. Luckily this once isn't the result of a bomb. Probably negligence, I mean we are called here three times a year because someone doesn't dispose of their hazards properly. I think Neilsen finally did it now", Travis answered as he shut his locker and raced down behind Andy.
"Whatever it is, I'm sure we'll handle it", Andy assured as they climbed into the engines and set off to the scene. Once there they found the entire building engulfed and multiple crews working to slow the spread of the flames that tore viciously through the building. Andy looked to the side of her and noticed a few of the workers being loaded onto backboards with varying degrees of injury. She noticed other workers, scurrying out of different crevices and doors in the building like mice. Her eyes fell on Captains Rose and Everett, trying hard to bring some stability to an otherwise chaotic scene. The bullhorns were ignored, all sense of rationality was ignored, and there were ltertally people running everywhere to the point where it became hard to tell who was a civilian and who was a first responder as well as who was injured and who wasn't. All Andy could do was stare at the scene in shock for a total of thirty seconds, her team standing right behind her. Her team, God that felt good to say.
"This is, woah", Vic started, breaking the silence that hung in the air amongst the team.
"A monster", Dean added
"You can say that again", Travis answered as he moved out of the way for an obviously injured worker.
"Jeez, are you sure this is only 5 alarms?", Andy asked
"At least you've had five alarms before. This is my first", Teddy answered, taking off after the guy that ran past them. Andy could hear Teddy yelling "Sir, stop, you need help" as she tried to catch the man who was bleeding from his arm.
The rest of the team's thoughts were broken as Maya walked towards them with assignments. She sighed heavily and shakily as her gaze shifted between the fire and the team. She cleared her throat before speaking, "Alright, Hughes and Miller, you're outside on the ladder. Warren, Altman, have the PRT ready. Herrera and Montgomery, search and rescue, God knows how many people are still in there. 40, 6, and 24 have the main building, I need you two the sweep the office area. I'm getting word that someone might be in that office over there", Maya ordered as she pointed towards a dilapidated brick building with a sign for demolition hanging precariously above the door.
"Are you crazy? That building is slated for demolition, no one's in there", Travis argued.
Maya looked at him seriously and gestured towards the building, "Yes, I know, that building has been condemned since 2003 but that wouldn't stop Neilsen from making employees go in there. We have to make sure every civilian is accounted for. Now go".
"You got it cap", Andy answered as she raced towards the building, followed by Travis. Once they were inside, Maya spotted Robert's chief car pull into the scene. He got out of the car and stormed towards Maya. He did not look happy, not one bit. "Shit", Maya grumbled as he stood in front of her waiting for an explanation.
Robert's eyes locked on Maya, very briefly turning towards the office building with the metal door that Andy had just axed her way through like a wild woman. "You sent Andy into the building?", he roared as Maya looked at him, not even blinking. She could be just as scary as he could when she needed to be, and frankly he chose not to argue with her when she was like that, knowing arguing would do more harm than good.
"With all due respect sir, she is perfectly capable of being in there. I'm not holding her back from saving lives. She's a captain, leading the search and rescue in there is good practice for her", Maya answered, not giving in, as Robert rolled his eyes.
"Very well then. I want updates, Bishop. You hear me? I want her out of there alive. Where the hell is Gibson?" Robert wondered looking for their only lieutenant who was nowhere to be found.
"Off today at some appointment", Maya answered. Robert nodded affirmatively and walked past her to go and get an update from Rose.
Meanwhile, in the building, Andy was calling out to anyone that needed her. She watched as three people darted out the way that she came. She sighed with relief, thankful she was able to evacuate them safely. The smoke was getting thick between her and Travis as they checked every other crevice of the office. Andy looked behind her as a wave of orange flames swept across the floor separating them. She was thankful that there were two exits, one in the back and the one up front where they had come from. "Alright, that ends that exit for me. You leave that way I'll leave this way", she ordered.
"And leave you? No way", Travis asked
Andy shook her head and locked eyes with him, speaking seriously, "Leave the way we came. I'll get out the back door over there. I'll be fine'
Travis did as he was asked while Andy went forward yelling for any more survivors. She turned her attention to her radio as she heard Maya talk.
"All civilians are accounted for. All units exit the building", she announced through the radio.
"Copy that Captain. Montgomery and I got separated but both of us are on our way out now", Andy answered as a beam cracked and fell from above, grazing her ankle and landing on her foot.
"Shit", she yelled, gritting her teeth to stop from screaming when she saw the beam covered in red, her blood. "Never mind, I'm trapped", she yelled forgetting that the radio was still very much on.
Outside, Maya heard Andy over her radio. She immediately radioed back, a look of concern spread across her face. She hoped she had misheard Andy even though part of her knew she heard her just right. Andy was in trouble.
"Herrera? Do you copy? You said you were trapped?" Maya radioed back, her breath quickening and her voice shaken. "She better not die on me", she thought as she heard the crackle of the radio again. As long as she had Andy talking, all was well right?
"Yeah, kind of. This beam fell on my ankle and I can't move. I can't get out" Andy stated as Robert overhead her voice and what she was telling Maya. Robert tapped Maya on the shoulder, catching her by surprise.
"That's it, I'm going in for her", he yelled as he threw on his mask and checked how much was left in his tank. "You're in charge out here Bishop"
"What, no, you can't. It's not protocol. The last time you did this you almost..." Maya started as Robert cut her off.
"Yeah, and she almost died too. I'm not letting that happen this time. Bishop, you're going to be chief anyways soon so you'll be fine. You're in charge", he repeated as he ran into the building leaving Maya standing there dumbfounded and angry. The chief was running into yet another building for Andy. Putting himself at risk and Maya in the tough position of letting him take that risk yet again. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, silently praying to a God she didn't believe in, that her friend as well as her boss/friend's husband, would walk out of there together and alive.
Heading inside the front of the building, Robert made his way down a corridor and into a large office space where he found his wife standing there in visible pain but standing strong nonetheless. She stood there, emotionless, as the building burned around her. The flames lickedthe walls but hadn't yet spread to the area where she was, thank goodness. She looked unfazed by what was going on around her and calm too. That was exactly how he expected to find her. Nothing different. He shook his head and sighed as he looked at her, "Andy, honey, you got yourself into quite a mess here huh?", he smiled as she smiled back at him, letting him know that now he was here, everything was okay.
"I would say so. Please get me out of here. Get me out of here so you can go back to your job and help Maya", Andy pleaded as he made his way over to her. He didn't even get within 4 feet of her when he heard the ground beneath him crack. He grimaced at the sound of the floorboards beneath his feet. The entire wood floor reeked of mold and felt spongy as he walked across it. He was careful, considering the floor could give way at any minute. He wondered how anybody had been allowed to work in a building with this many structural issues.
"Don't worry about Maya, she has plenty of back-up. Now let's see about getting you out of here. Stay right there" he smiled as he neared closer to her.
"Where am I going to go?" she asked as she heard the wood of the floor crack again each time Robert stepped even closer to her. "Please be careful. That floor sounds incredibly unstable"
"Andy, you worry too much. Dixon probably gave this place a pass on the codes. Nothing's up to code here, structure or safety. I'm saving my wife-", he started as the floor gave way, sending him down with it. She winced as she heard him hit the concrete basement floor below. She looked over to see him lying there. There was too much blood. Too much for him to be alive. She put her hand to her mouth and locked eyes with the hole in the floor for a minute in silence. This was not happening to her. For a brief minute, she believed that he was going to climb up out of the hole and get both of them out of there.
Andy yelled for him until she was hoarse, hoping to wake him up. He didn't move. There was nothing. He wasn't coming for her. Now she was trapped and pretty sure that he was dead. Screaming wasn't doing her any good. She pulled out her radio and called Maya, hoping she could send in back up. She held back the tears as she heard Maya's worried voice on the other end. "Maya Bishop. We have a man down in the basement. I repeat we have a man down", Andy informed her, fighting back tears.
"Herrera?" Maya answered into the radio, her voice full of worry. Her face turned a ghostly white when she heard Andy's slightly panicked voice. "Herrera, what do you mean by a man down?"
"It's the chief. Robert fell through the floor in here, about four minutes ago. He's gone. I'm trapped, there's only 3% left in my tank, and there's no way out for me either. Do you copy?", Andy cried as she spoke into the radio, barely able to breathe. On the other end, Maya stared back at the office stone faced. She knew deep down she shouldn't have let him go in after her. Andy lost her father on the job, and now she was about to lose her husband in almost the same way. "If you can't send help that's okay. Don't let everyone see me when they recover us. Please", Andy begged .
"Andy, stop saying that. Take a breath and conserve your air. No one is getting recovered. Not today. I'm sending someone in for you right now. For both of you", Maya answered trying to give her hope. She yelled for Travis to go in and get the chief. Travis took a breath in as he nodded and silently obliged. Now was not the time for feelings. Those could come later.
She stood there, trying to come up with a plan to get Andy when she heard a voice behind her. She nearly jumped a mile out of her skin before turning around and glaring at none other than Jack Gibson. She closed her eyes and let out a sigh, breathing deeply "God Gibson, you can't just sneak up on people like that", she yelled, her voice ice cold.
"I was just in the neighborhood when I noticed the fire. I thought I could come help out somewhere", he excused as Maya shook her head.
"Well you can't help out here. I have enough on my plate with their chief possibly dead and Andy trapped", Maya mentioned as Jack dropped his phone, sending it crashing to the pavement, the screen shattering upon impact. Something happened to Andy?
Jack looked at her skeptically, talking slowly to make sure he understood exactly what Maya was saying , "What do you mean Andy's trapped?"
"What do you think I mean? Andy's stuck in there under a beam and I think the chief is probably dead. If you want to make yourself useful, you can stand out here while I go in and get her", Maya suggested flatly, refusing to show any emotion, like she usually did during a crisis. Jack noticed her hands were shaking as she tried to put on her mask. Jack shook his head at her and ran towards the office, without even so much as a turnout jacket. Maya glared at him, her face contorted in anger. She was furious at him. "Where do you think you're going? You have no gear Gibson. Jack Gibson!", she shouted, tears forming in her eyes. She couldn't lose a third one of them too. She ran towards him and grabbed him by the shirt, yanking him back. "Jack, Stop", she begged as he freed himself from her grasp and locked eyes with her.
"I'm going to get her. We will both come out alive, I promise", he yelled back as Maya pursed her lips and watched him enter the building.
In the building, Jack couldn't see much without a flashlight but he eventually caught the glint of the reflective band on a jacket, Andy's jacket. A lump formed in his throat and he could barely breathe. He wondered what he was going to find, if he was even going to find her alive. He ran towards her, nearly falling into the hole himself. "Andy?" he shouted as he caught his balance, nearly falling into the hole as he followed the sound of staggered breathing and sobbing.
"Jack?", Andy called out, surprised to see him there. He had been at an appointment with Diane and wasn't supposed to work today. "Jack, I'm over here", she called him, as he side-stepped around the hole. He peered down inside and noticed Travis carrying their chief out over his shoulder.
"I'm coming. I'm going to get you out of there", he assured as he reached her. The orange glow from the flames on the other side of the room illuminated her face, and he could see the emotional pain written all over it.
"Thank you. Now, I'm probably in like a lot of shock but I think I'm a widow", Andy answered, too hoarse to talk, as Jack side stepped around the hole and lifted the beam allowing her enough room to get out.
"You're not a widow. Travis has Robert. Can you walk on that?" he asked
"Not particularly", Andy answered as Jack helped her walk out of the building. A wave of numbness filled her as she turned her head and saw Robert being loaded by Ben into the PRT. Robert was a mess and just by looking at him, Jack figured that there was no way he could have survived the fall. Ben shook his head as Teddy walked over to Jack.
"Not now Altman. Just go to the hospital with him", Jack expressed as nodded affirmatively, laying a hand on Andy's shoulder in support, before walking back to the PRT and jumping in the back. Once Teddy was gone, Maya came running over to him and punched him in the shoulder; hard. She punched him again, and went for a third time, this time Jack, blocked her fist. "Enough Bishop", he warned with an even tone as he looked around at the other members of other stations. The fire was burning itself out now with nothing to do but watch, and instead of having eyes on the fire, people's eyes were starting to fall on Maya.
Maya didn't seem to care about the very public scene she was making however and continued on yelling, "Of all the reckless, stupid things you've ever done, I can't even look at you I'm so pissed. You could have gotten yourself killed in there. Running in there without gear? You broke like 15 different protocols. I should fire you on the spot. I should...", Maya yelled as Jack interrupted her. He had been trying to be civil and act respectfully for the sake of his job, his teammates, and Andy especially, but he couldn't hold back any longer.
"Reckless and stupid? That's just great, excuse me for saving my best friend Bishop", Jack yelled as Andy put her hand on his shoulder to temporarily calm him, as much as she kind of enjoyed him digging into Maya.
"Jack, stop..." she warned before as she passed out, Jack catching her before she could hit the ground. He immediately called over to Dean who ran over with a gurney from the Aid Car. Vic took over for Jack and helped Dean load her into the aid car.
"Come on Jack, let's go", Vic called as she hopped in the back of their Aid Car to be with Andy while Dean drove. Jack expressed that he wanted to ride in the back with her to be by Andy's side for every part of this. Jack, Maya, and Travis stood before the open doors of the aid car. Travis shifted his gaze uncomfortably between the two as he felt the tension in the air.
"I'm done with the bullshit Maya. Andy needs me so I'm going to go be there for her. Do you have a problem with that?", Jack questioned as he stepped on the edge of the car.
"You saw Warren's face. Sullivan is dead. What are going to do, give her a hug and tell her that everything will be okay when her life just came crashing to pieces? When her husband sacrificed his life for her? I don't think so", Maya answered coldly
"I think there's plenty you can do when you're done here. You can come to the hospital and be there for your so-called "best friend" even though I don't think you actually know what being a real friend even means, or you can sit here and be an ass about it", he answered with a fake smile across his lips.
"Don't you tell me what being a real friend is. Like you were a real friend to Rigo. You slept with his wife a few months ago", Maya spat back.
"This really isn't the place guys", Vic yelled from the back of the Aid Car as Jack walked towards them, turning around to look back at Maya.
"I'm going to go with her. You can yell at me or fire me, or do whatever the hell you want to do later, but right now, I need to be there for her", he added as he jumped in the back of the Aid Car behind Vic.
