I'd like to start by saying hello, to new readers and to readers that have come over from my other fic, Find my place. So, lets get on with the story and I will talk more at the end.
Melinda was 16. A trained Hydra assassin. She lived on the base, had since she was born. Every corner she turned had octopus embellished walls and was set-in tones of Black and grey, but she didn't mind. It was all she had ever known. All she would probably ever know. She hadn't minded till she was 14- when they had started sending her on missions. They had been training her since she was four years old, but she had always thought she would have a choice. She had never thought about it until her mother was killed on a mission. On her birthday. This is what her family did. Her mother. Her grandmother. Both killed on Hydra missions. And they hadn't had a choice, but she was better- had more black belts, more training and had never been off-base except for missions. Hydra was her life until several months ago. She was eavesdropping on a meeting. She found out two things- they were conditioning her for leadership, and they were trying to kill people. The words rang in her head. "Leave no survivors. Kill women and Children. Use the weapon." Now she wanted out. Away. But she had Nowhere to go. No money. No information. That's why she was still here, months later.
"Call an emergency meeting. We found Hydra."
"We need all available agents here immediately."
"All agents are on duty, ma'am."
"Bring in the Academy students. Everyone year two and above.
"Ma'am, they're not fully trained."
"This is too big of an opportunity to miss. The heart of Hydra has been found. We have to cut it out."
"You have to warn them about the girl."
"The girl. You mean we have to tell them that they are all about to lose their lives to a small 16-year-old, female assassin. I don't think so."
"They have a right to know that Hydra's cavalry is on base."
Phil Coulson was in year two at the Comms and was doing one-to-one field training with Nick Fury himself. The last thing he thought would happen on Friday night was to be presented with a level 1 SHIELD badge and be told. "Welcome to SHIELD, you have a mission." Everyone year two and above was sitting in their SO's office, being told that they were about to risk their lives to take over the biggest base in Hydra's possession. It stretched underneath the English channel and was home to thousands of Hydra agents. The only ways in or out were a heavily guarded stairwell that led out onto a small Dock in the middle of the channel and an aircraft hangar, that could only open from the inside. They were going to gain access by sneaking in on a stolen Hydra plane and then letting the other teams in. He was. Part of the first contact team. "Wheels up in 5," he was told.
Melinda was lying on her bed at 11'oclock at night, when she heard the voice on the comms. "Agent May, report to conference room 084 at once. Repeat. Agent May, report to conference room 084 at once." Her stomach filled with dread. No-one knew what happened in that room. It was reserved for only the highest-ranking agents like Mallick and Whitehall. Despite this fear, she headed straight there, because the only thing she feared more than conference room 084, was what happened when she disobeyed orders. "Brocken ribs. One for each second you disobey Hydra. Hold you under water for 2 minutes, if you survive, we will forget what you did. If you fail a mission, you will keep doing it using a simulation without break until you succeed." These started to happen after they caught her listening into that conference. That conference about death, held in room 084.
Coulson boarded the plane, and they took off. The first contact team. Him-Phil Coulson, Isabel Hartley, Victoria Hand, John Garret, Maria Hill, Anne Weaver and Clint Barton. He was usually optimistic, but right now he didn't bother. They would probably lose somebody, if not everybody on this mission. They weren't ready. The plane landed anyway- at least they weren't shot out of the sky, and they headed to the door of the hangar. The base was eerily empty, maybe they had evacuated, he thought hopefully. This hope was squashed when the alarms started blaring.
Melinda had just opened the door to room 084, when the alarms went off. Invaders.
"Agent May, go to the hangar and kill them. Kill them all. No survivors."
She couldn't do it. She Couldn't kill them, but she didn't know what she was going to do. She would be killed. It was a kill or be killed situation. She only had one option: leave. That's when she formulated her plan. Her eyes scanned the corridors, missing no details. She would not forget this place. Her home. Despite the last two years being filled with horrible memories of torture and pain, It also held so many good memories. Memories of her Mom and Grandma, Memories of learning to fight-something she had loved until it had been forced into practical use, memories of growing up. These walls held her life, and she was about to break them down.
The alarms pierced his brain with terror. They knew they were here. They had no hope. He didn't want to see his friends die. The death bells only started ringing once they were standing in the corridor outside control. Victoria was opening the doors when he saw her. Walking down the corridor alone, without backup. A 16-year-old girl. Small with beautiful dark hair that flowed down her shoulders. Deadly. She was Hydra's cavalry. From what he had seen, she could take them all down without sustaining a scratch. She had been involved in nearly every Hydra communication they had intercepted. The Cavalry. The future of Hydra. She held a tablet, which allowed her to seal all the doors behind her. In one fluid movement, she pulled a gun out of her jacket and shot. He looked around to see which of his friends was on the other end of the gun- none of them. The bullet pierced the security camera and several more shattered the rest. Walking strait up to the control board, the very girl that he thought would kill him, entered all the passwords, and opened the door.
With one last glance at her home, Melinda took the handcuffs from her small backpack and cuffed herself.
"Please. Take me."
The team looked back at her in shock. The seven agents looked only two or three years older than her, but by their shocked expressions, had expected her to follow Hydra's order and kill them.
"Stop staring at me like that. I can't kill you. Yes, I have lived in Hydra my whole life. Yes, I have only ever left the base for missions, but I couldn't follow an order that told me to kill seven people, barely older than myself. If you don't take me, they will kill me. They have almost done before. I was 14 and I failed a mission. I took two in the gut for it. If they don't kill me, they will continue making me kill for them and that is worse, so please. Either put a bullet in my head or take me," she told them, pressing a gun into the agent referred to as Coulson's hand.
"What kind of place has 14-year-old trained assassins?" she heard the girl with the red streak in her hair mutter, before leading her towards the Quinn jet. As they took off from the hangar, Coulson radioed someone.
"We have the Cavalry. She came willingly. She is not a hostile."
Please don't call me that. That is Hydra's name. I am done with Hydra.
"Do you have a name?"
"Melinda. Melinda May."
"As in daughter of Lian May," he asked, eyes widening.
"That's me," she sighed
"Sorry, My name is Phil. Agent Phil Coulson."
"How do you know my mother?"
"You have no idea!" he gasped, realization coating his face. "Did you know your grandma?"
"Killed in action when I was four. 2 days before I started my training."
"In 1952, Agent Margret May went completely off charts. She was one of the top agents in the SSR at the time and had been working for Peggy Carter."
"Are you saying that my Grandmother was SHIELD."
"Not just an ordinary SHIED Agent. Director Carte was her SO. She was meant for leadership."
Melinda noticeably flinched when he mentioned leadership.
"Why did you...?"
"Before I was sent to kill you, I was called to conference room 084," She said as if that would explain everything but when he seemed confused, she continued. "Room 084 is the boss room. Everything of any importance happened there. It is where I first discovered the truth about Hydra. I was eavesdropping and found out that they were conditioning me for leadership."
After a few moments of silence, he continued to explain her connection to SHIELD. After 20 years, still nothing was heard about Margret, but In 1980 a women called Lian May came onto radar and had a DNA match with Margret. We were completely unable to trace her, until we found her dead body in '84. 2 years later, you came onto radar as 'The Cavalry' when 2 SHIELD teams were taken down in under an hour by a 14-year-old, but we had no idea that you were involved in Carter's only unsolved case.
As the plane landed, Coulson's radio crackled. "Please bring the Cavalry straight up to Agent Fury."
As he led her up to Fury's office, he realized how Young she was. It was amazing how you overlook a factor like that when the person in front of you makes you worry for your life, the thought as he walked away from the office.
"So, Hydra's Cavalry," Agent Fury said, gesturing for her to sit down.
"Melinda May, Sir."
"May? There's a name you don't hear every day. You don't happen to be..."
"Yes, Melinda May, Daughter of Lian May, Granddaughter of Margret May and Hydra's pet project. Happy?" she said in an annoyed tone.
"I'm sorry Miss May, I know you've been through a lot with me, but I need some answers."
"Don't play that card with me. Get to the point. What do you want?"
"I want to know how you were so untraceable, how did you knock out 2 shield teams on your won in less that an hour, and why the hell Hydra had a sixteen-year-old working as their top agent!"
"I started my training at the age of four and have trained six hours a day without a rest day since. They used me because I have no family, friends, or outside contact, so they could torture me as much as they wanted without anyone caring and I have never known anything better, so I just assumed that everyone's life was like mine, until I turned fourteen when they sent me out to kill your teams and I saw the world for the first time. Hope that answers your questions because that's pretty much all I know."
After a few moments, she added "Sir, I completely understand if you want to put a bullet through my head right now. I have done terrible things and killed more people than I wish to remember, so if you come to that decision, know that I won't fight you."
"Melinda May, the fact that you understand that is exactly the reason why I don't have to put you six feet underground. You have shown that you worked with Hydra against your will and understand that what you did was wrong, and Coulson trusts you. I would like to offer you an opportunity because of Your skillset and heritage. You cannot walk free, so either you spend 3 years at SHIELD Academy, Operations, or you live out the rest of your days in the fridge. Please consider my offer Melinda, you would be a valuable asset to SHIELD."
I hope you enjoyed, please let me know what you thought and if you think I should make it a multichapter. If I do choose to make It a multichapter fic, I won't update regularly, as I have to fit it around my schedule for writing my other fic (which is updated once a week). Depending on how much time I have, I might update it more or less frequently :)
