Dana Scully couldn't believe it. Couldn't believe that the very child she had been wanting for so long was nestled in loving arms. The loving arms of a man she thought was lost forever but was standing in front of her; breathing in out, in out.
Her partner in crime, best friend, and someone she trusted so deeply.
"I trust him with my life" she once told that woman all those years ago.
The one person she would gladly allow to hold the oh-so delicate miracle of life in his strong, loving arms.
She had spent all of those restless nights when he was abducted waiting, hoping, wishing, and praying for his return. That he would return to her doorstep without a scratch on him, and she would take him in her arms. To hold him tight and never let go.
When she found his grey, cold lifeless body in the field, she felt as if all of the air had been knocked out of her lungs. Tears stung her eyes like pricking needles and she felt all of the leverage in her body suddenly grow weak as she fell to her knees, taking his scarred face in hand.
Looking up at the stars as Jeremiah Smith was taken away and standing in the freezing snow as her partner's casket lingered in her gaze, she couldn't help but question that higher power why this was happening.
Why would the person she couldn't live without be taken from her?
But right at this very moment he was here.
A warm, radiant smile had spread across his face as he slowly rocked the child in his arms while gazing down at his tiny features.
Fox Mulder was standing in front of her holding their beautiful son in his arms.
"The truth we both know"
These were the words he spoke before he lowered his gaze to her eyes and bore into them with utter adoration and affection.
Before she felt the warm, soft sensation of his lips finally upon hers- stealing her breath away.
She finally understood the truth. What he had meant.
They were in love.
Deeply, madly, passionately in love.
Time was lost as they explored the electric current that seemed to fuse their beings into one. Tasting what the other felt against their tongue as her hand found leverage on his elbow.
Seconds or maybe even minutes could have gone by, but they couldn't care less. All that mattered was this moment that they shared and how long they were willing to let it carry on.
It wasn't until William began to fuss that they were brought out of that wonderful spell that lingered in the air as they reluctantly parted.
Tears were streaming down her face and he seems to notice this as he bent his head to kiss the trails running down her cheeks.
The emotion stirring within her began to unleash and she didn't know she said the words until they left her mouth.
"I love you."
He had first spoken the words to her once in the throes of passion; but she had not returned them. It was too soon.
Instead, she locked eyes with him and squeezed her legs around him harder in such a way that words were inadequate. It was their way of speaking that they had mastered over the years- their own secret language.
Now, she finally said those words to him as if they had been saying the phrase regularly for years.
It felt right.
Mulder leaned his head against hers until they were nose-to-nose and forehead-to-forehead and he smiled that gorgeous smile she had come to know and adore.
"And I love you"
The words came out of his mouth gruff and he held her gaze with all the affection in the world. At this, she feels those barriers she held up begin to crumble. Those barriers that kept people out in fear of losing them.
Mulder handed William back into her arms for her to put him to bed and she gently tucked him in tight.
Scully walked back over to him folded her bathrobe tighter around her waist. She spoke so quietly he could barely make out what she was saying.
"Stay hereā¦and hold me?"
He smiled and walked over to wrap his arms around her small frame.
"Sure, there's nothing good on t.v at my place anyway."
Her body trembled with a laugh before guiding him over to the bed. They both reclined onto her decorative pillows and she burrowed close to his chest while his arms wrapped tightly around her; never willing to let go.
Mulder placed a gentle kiss to her cheek and Scully took a deep breath- feeling happy and content.
No words were spoken from this point on as no words could describe what either of them were feeling.
The only thing that remained was this unspoken affection that they felt for another and their child.
Their child.
God, it all still felt so surreal.
Listening to the gentle, soft breathing coming from the bassinet and the steady rise and fall of their chests- they both drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
Together at last and together as one.
