It was nighttime in Adventure Bay. Ryder and the PAW Patrol were camping out under the stars. As the 7 friends roasted marshmallows, Ryder's phone rang. Taking it out, he saw that the Earl of Barkingburg was calling. He answered without hesitation. "Ood evening, your Earlness. What's the emergency?"
"Ah, well, it's not so much an emergency, Ryder. More like a favor." The Earl pointed his phone towards the pillar in the center of the throne room upon which the royal crown sat on a purple pillow. At the foot of the pillar, an Irish Wolfhound pup sat at attention, his fur a dark red. His eyes were a cloudy grey. "This is our new guard pup, Setanta. He's done a bang-up job so far, but I feel like he could benefit from some pointers. Do you think you could spare Chase for a day?"
Ryder smiled. "No crown is too guarded, no pup is too small! Chase, follow me to the Air Patroller! The rest of you… save some marshmallows for later."
The pups barked happily. Chase followed Ryder to the Air Patroller. The duo took off towards Barkingburg. As they flew towards their destination, Ryder explained the mission, bringing up a still from his conversation with the Earl. Chase studied Setanta.
"His eyes are so cloudy… is he blind?"
Ryder nodded. "It seems so. But the Earl says he's been doing a good job."
"Then with my help, he'll do a great job!" Chase exclaimed.
When the duo reached the castle, the Earl greeted them warmly. "Welcome, Ryder and Chase! Setenta is very excited to meet you. This way." The Earl led them through the castle until they reached the throne room. Setanta stood guard in front of the crown. As the trio neared he raised an ear. "Hmm…. the Earl… but also a new human and a pup… a German Shepard… they both smell of the shores of Adventure Bay… Dean Trocaire, it's Ryder and Chase of the PAW Patrol!" the stoic facade broke as he grinned, his great tail wagging.
Chase smiled as he padded up to Setanta. "Pleasure to meet you, Setanta. Ready to get guard dog pointers?"
Setanta stood straight again. "Reporting for duty, Chase, sir!"
Ryder chuckled. "Looks like you've got this, Chase. Call if you need anything."
Chase did his best to teach Setanta how to be a guard pup. For a pup who couldn't see, Setanta was a fast learner. "Chase, the Earl set up lasers to warn if anyone tries to steal the crown, right?" Setanta asked.
Chase looked behind him at the laser grid. "Uh-uh. We're about two tail-lengths from it. I tripped it by accident my first time. Not fun. Loud sirens, flashing lights… the whole shebang."
Setanta frowned and lowered his head. "I can't stand loud noises. My ears are really sensitive."
Chase padded his new friend's paw. "Don't worry about that. Just focus on keeping the crown safe. 10-4?"
Setanta nodded. "Copy that, Chase, sir." The two stood guard for a while until Setanta suddenly raised his nose in the air and took a big sniff. "I smell someone coming… small… light-footed…"
"I've never been described as light-footed before. I'll take that as a compliment." Sweetie, the Princess' Royal Pup smiled as she descended the steps.
Chase was immediately on the defensive. "Careful, Setanta. Sweetie stole the crown once before and framed me for it."
Sweetie giggled. "Silly Chase, I would never repeat the same scheme twice. Besides, I have no intention of stealing the crown."
Chase frowned, still crouched defensively. "So what are you doing down here so late?"
Sweetie blushed. "I, um… want to meet Setanta. I've heard he's a fantastic guard dog."
"A likely story," Chase growled.
Setanta turned his head towards Chase and Sweetie. "Chase… she's telling the truth."
"What? How can you be sure?" Chase asked.
"Being born blind allowed my other senses to develop stronger than normal to make up for it. I can hear heartbeats… feel them underneath my paws… when someone lies, their heartbeat speeds up. Sweetie's little heart is beating along at normal speed. She's telling the truth." Setanta stood at attention. "Setanta, part-time guard dog, at your service."
"Very pleased to meet you, Setanta," Sweetie smiled. "I assume Chase here is giving you some tips. Let's test them. She jumped towards the two pups as if to leap past them to steal the crown. But Setanta was too quick. He quickly got up on his hind legs and blocked Sweetie's path. The little white Terrier rolled off o his underbelly and onto the floor, unhurt, but surprised. "My word… however did you…?"
Setanta smiled. "I heard you leap off the tiled floor… I could tell where you were heading based on the change in the wind."
Chase smiled. "Wow, Setanta… you really are an amazing guard dog. We could use a pup like you on the PAW Patrol."
Setanta frowned and shook his head. "Thanks, but no thanks, Chase. Your vehicles have sirens," Setanta covered his ears. "I hate sirens."
Just then, an unfamiliar scent hit his nostrils. He stood ready. "Sweetie, get somewhere safe. Chase, be ready. There's an intruder."
"How can you be sure?" Chase asked.
"The nose knows."
Sweetie looked around at the darkened castle. "What does your nose know?"
"I smell a human and… a bird."
"CAAAWWW!" An eagle dove straight for Sweetie from the darkness. But Setanta leaped into the air and pinned it down, growling.
"There is only room for one hunter in this castle."
"Jean-Claude!... Oops!" a voice just ahead of them.
"Arf! Net!" Chase called out. His trusty net launcher popped out of his Pup Pack and shot a net into the darkness. Chase's aim rang true, as there was an impact and an "Oof!"
"What's all the ruckus?" the Earl demanded as he and the Princess came down the stairs.
The eagle in Setanta's clutches squawked, but the wolfhound didn't let up. "You're no good. My nose can tell that much."
The earl turned on the lights, revealing not only an eagle in an aviator's cap but also a young boy in an aviator's jacket trapped by Chase's net.
Sweetie gasped. "The Duke of Flappington! And his mangy bird, Jean-Claude!"
Jean-Claude squawked indignantly.
The Princess crossed her arms. "Planning to steal the crown, cousin? And however would you manage to do that?"
The Duke grinned sheepishly. "Pin it on Sweetie to distract you until I made it back to Flappington?"
Sweetie gasped. "The nerve! Though…." her ears drooped. "It most likely would've worked."
Setanta, after allowing the Earl and the Princess to apprehend Jean-Claude, gently nudged Sweetie. "No matter your past, focus on a better future."
Chase nodded. "You did good tonight. You didn't try to steal the crown and you even helped test Setanta's training."
Sweetie looked at the two pups. "I did… didn't I?" she smiled and turned to the Princess. "Crown secure, your Highness. Thanks to Chase and Setanta."
The Princess smiled as she scooped Sweetie up and rubbed her belly. "And you, my dearest Sweetie."
The next morning, Ryder came to pick up Chase, who told him all about what had happened. "Sweetie even helped us. I mean, really helped us!"
Ryder chuckled. "Sounds like you had a successful mission."
Chase howled happily in response.
Setanta walked up to him and extended a paw. "It's been an honor, Chase. I hope we meet again soon."
Chase smiled and placed a paw on Setanta's. "Count on it, Setanta. We're in the same business of protection detail."
At the top of the grand staircase, Sweetie watched the scene unfold, her squeaky toy, Busby in her paws. "Today, Busby, Setanta protected the crown. But someday…" she sighed lovingly. "Someday, he'll protect my heart."
