Sonic and Shadow go on separate adventures. Shadow goes to Earth to find Specimen X, and Sonic finds a Dark energy creature preying on his family. Can Sonic save them without succumbing to the creature himself?
This is my continuing Sonic Dark Energy Arc which began with "To Catch a Bluebird" Please feel free to read and review all of them. Please review this too!
Prologue
"So," Sonic said eyeing the aged kitsune warily, "your wise and all-knowing and stuff, right?"
Cobbler chuckled and offered him some bread and cheese. "Don't know about all knowing lad. Nobody knows all things, but I do have some experience at living. What's on yer mind?"
Sonic blushed a little nibbling at the offered food. What was it about her that made him always feel like he should have paid more attention when the elders tried to warn him about the world outside of South Island? Sonic shook the uneasy feeling off swallowed and asked his question. "Well, I was wondering if you might know why I'm so fast. Not the energy thing mind you, my family figured that out when I was little. I know I absorb energy from everywhere like it's going out of style. I mean the big why. Why am I like this? Why am I like the only hedgehog in the whole world with these powers?"
The blind kitsune smiled and shook her head. "Are ye asking for easy answered then lad? Ye should know I never give easy answers."
Riddles, an excuse for not giving him a straight answer. Sonic hated riddles. "Come on Cobbler. You have to know something!"
Cobbler used her staff to give Sonic a few pokes on his chest to punctuate her words. "I know that the answers that yer seeking are best left to find on yer own. If yer told the easy answer it won't mean a thing to ye."
"Fine," Sonic said with annoyance, "it's just that I'd love an instruction booklet for these powers I have. Every now and then I'll do something completely new, and I don't have a clue how I did it."
Cobbler shook her head firmly, yet she still looked amused. "If ye, did it lad, a part of ye know how. It's just not a place ye can find in yer head. Listen to yer gifts. They know what ye can do and listen to yer heart as well. A warrior's pure heart will never steer them wrong."
Amy sat in the bed and felt Sonic's dreams shift to his all-familiar running dreams. With a sigh she leaned over, kissed his forehead and relaxed slightly feeling Sonic fall into a deeper sleep. Amy got out of the bed covered Sonic up again and went downstairs to make herself a cup of tea. When she passed her living room, she noticed a soft orange light. She saw her Chaos lamp a gift from Knuckles and his ancestors glowing a color that told Amy that Eli, the spirit Echidna Shaman, wanted to let her know his presence. She walked over to the lamp and placed her hands on it. "Eli?" She called softly, "is everything all right?"
Ever cheerful the Spirit answered. She couldn't see him, but near the Chaos lamp she could hear him clearly. I was just making my predawn look around to make sure everything here is fine. I felt you worrying about Sonic though.
"Sonic had another dream about Tails' grandmother," she told him worried, "that's the third one this month, and the last one was only three days ago."
But he stayed with you right? Eli asked. He didn't go flitting off into the Realm of Dreams?
"He stayed with me," Amy affirmed, "it sort of felt like a memory if that makes any sense."
It might have been just that a memory. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It might be that Sonic is trying to remember something she told him a long time ago.
There was something in Eli's tone that warned Amy that he might have another theory. "Or?" Amy asked suspiciously.
With a sigh Eli added, sometimes I get the feeling Amu gave you increased insight too. It could be that Cobbler is trying to remind Sonic of something she told him years ago. Like Sonic said, nine tailed kitsune don't die. They can choose to be in the physical world or the spirit world. Now giving what she's guarding she wouldn't call Sonic into The Realm of Dreams to talk to him, but the geis she put on Sonic is powerful enough that if she commanded him to remember something he probably will eventually.
"So, what should I do about it?" Amy asked uneasily.
Eli laughed. When a nine tailed kitsune wants something, you stay out of her way. Keep watching his dreams though. You might figure out what she wants Sonic to remember before he does.
That at least was something she could do. "Thanks Eli."
Now go have your tea and relax. Cobbler would never hurt Sonic, and like I said before, it could be just Sonic trying to remember stuff on his own. Don't worry so much.
With that the light on the Chaos lamp flickered and changed back to its normal soft white glow signaling Eli's departure. Amy sighed and went to make her tea.
Eli was right of course. Cobbler would never hurt Sonic and would try, even from the spirit world, to help him. Amy resolved not to worry about it. Later she would ask Sonic about the dream. Making him talk about it might help him remember. In the meantime, Amy decided to make Sonic a special breakfast. Keeping Sonic happy and contented was something she knew she could do.
