Just an silly idea to connect the first game with Dark Legend. I don't own Overlord.
Godric walked through the Dark Tower, wary of every shadow and corner as he gripped his staff tightly while he heard the faint sound of his allies battling the minions throughout the rest of the Tower. However this has given him the time needed to sneak through the secret passageways of the Tower, using his magic to disrupt as much of the spells protecting the Tower and the minions as he could. So far their plan was going perfectly as the others distracted the minions so Godric could complete his role, and he couldn't stop himself from feeling excited as he realised that he was almost done. That soon he would do battle against the Overlord alongside his seven allies and free the land from evil, and he could retire to be the father he should have been to Rose and Velvet.
However this excitement faded when he was working on destroying and he heard the heavy steps of someone wearing armour behind him, and he span around to see his foe watching him with a sword in hand. He was dressed completely in black armour, a dark red cape coming down to his feet and his eyes glowed with malevolence and bloodlust. They locked eyes and neither one moved, both clearly not as prepared for this confrontation as they had believed they were, until finally Godric put a finger to his temple.
"Everyone, the Overlord is in the throne room. I'll try to keep him contained until he gets here."
"Interesting group you have with you brother. Shame they'll have to die." the Overlord's deep voice spoke inside Godric's mind, forcing the Wizard to aim his staff and fire a stream of glowing blue energy.
"Don't call me that. We haven't been brother's for a long time Graydon."
"I suppose we haven't. Not since you betrayed me that is." Graydon didn't seem to feel the blast and instead charged through it, swinging his blade with Godric only barely leaping out of the way while turning the ground where he had been standing.
"Betrayed you!? You were the one who broke the agreement, you were the one who turned your back on me for some mad quest for even more power." Godric thought as he started casting a spell once he saw the ice did little to distract Graydon who simply broke it when he landed on it heavily.
"You're childish ideas about balance were ridiculous, they were even when we made the deal. But I needed your help to kill father and I hoped that with time you could come to see things my way."
As Godric threw several fireballs at Graydon his mind drifted back to when he was barely a full grown man, when he and his twin brother came to the realisation that their father would bring nothing but destruction to the land. That his empire would fall because he ultimately had no ability to maintain it, ignoring Gnarl's warnings for as long as Godric could remember and simply indulging in every desire he had. So the twins, knowing that only together could they defeat the infamous Lord Gromgard, united their powers to kill their father and made their agreement. Graydon would take on the title of Overlord and the empire their father had built, in return for limiting it to a more controllable level while Godric embraced his destiny as a sorcerer for Good instead of Evil.
Somehow this agreement worked as the towns and cities their father had enslaved quickly adapted to life without Overlord control, having only been a few months away from rebellion. Now that his father was gone they had no interest in helping those who were now under Graydon's rule and without that support they had no way of rebelling and reluctantly accepted their fates. Godric meanwhile spent the next few decades harnessing his magical potential to help the newly freed areas that had suffered the most under his father's rule, which is how he had met his wife who had been a former princess hunting down the werewolves that murdered her family under his father's orders. Naturally he never told her his father had been the Overlord, though by that point it had been so long since anyone knew his father as Lord Gromgard it didn't matter when he told her his name nor were many aware that the Overlord even had children or was even killed. In fact many somehow created this entire narrative where Godric had battled and forced the Overlord into retreating, causing them to look up to him as a hero and their greatest protector.
"They weren't ridiculous Graydon. They worked, they allowed Good and Evil to coexist without causing complete chaos. You had your dark domain while everyone else lived their lives and whenever you moved to claim new territory you allowed me to free the areas that you had almost destroyed to they could rebuild."
"Yes, you truly were a hero. I wonder, are your allies aware of this little secret? Or have you kept them in the dark like you did with Eve and your children? Oh, how are Velvet and Rose by the way?"
"Shut up." Godric thought as the fireballs ended and Graydon stood unharmed, the two slowly circling each other as their telepathic conversation continued.
"You know, as terrible as he was at least our father was there. When was the last time you spent anytime with your daughters? Two years? More? Or how about this, how long did you spend with them the last time you did. If it's more than four hours I'll surrender right now."
"I said shut up!" Godric yelled as he threw lighting from his staff, only for Graydon to strike them with his sword which somehow had no effect on him.
"We're here! Godric, are you alright?" asked the familiar voice of Oberon, and the wizard looked around to see his seven allies have arrived while nodding. They all clutched their weapons tightly as they watched Graydon, everybody waiting for either him or their leader to make the first move. Finally Godric raised his staff and fired a beam of light, his allies following his lead as they attacked their foe.
It was hard, almost impossible, to go through with what must be done. He never wanted to fight Graydon, never wanted to be forced to kill his brother and certainly didn't want to embrace the ruthless and callous side to his nature that told him it was fine to sacrifice his allies and anyone else to stop Graydon. But despite this he did all those things, he ignored Gallant when he fell and when the opportunity arose he cast one final spell that was sent straight through his brother's heart. Godric shut his eyes once he knew he had struck his target, wanting to spare himself the pain of truly witnessing his brother's life being extinguished, but when he opened them he was somewhere else. He looked around in panic only to see nothing but an empty void, with no solid ground beneath his feet and yet he knew he was somehow standing on something.
"You know what your problem always was Godric?" Graydon's voice echoed throughout the void as Godric slowly came to realise what had happened. "You were always so arrogant, so confident in your abilities as a child and never losing that pride in yourself even when you grew up. You were convinced that no matter what you always knew more and could do more than anyone else, and that I was somehow your inferior simply because I preferred a good sword instead of complicated and dramatic spells. But as you can see, just because I prefer a sword doesn't mean I can't do magic. Though I have to admit I am actually disappointed that you didn't prepare for this, I was expecting you to feel me poking around in your mind the second I tried."
"Give me back my body!" Godric screamed but no matter how much he threw his arms about and yelled nothing changed.
"I'm afraid I can't do that seeing as you rudely broke my body, so I think taking yours is reasonable. Besides how else am I going to get the trust of your little band of misfits? They are definitely going to need some advice on how to enjoy the fame and gratitude they will receive for being heroes. And your daughters are going to need a good father figure after you've been good for long and as for Eve...well, she is rather beautiful and I think I would enjoy some company for a few years."
You know what, this might be exactly what I need." Graydon's voice continued as Godric suddenly found his body was gone. "A nice break from being an Overlord, set things up for my return naturally, but a few years away should be good for me. The job was actually becoming pretty stressful and it's not a good idea to just let work consume someone's entire life."
"Please Graydon, please don't do this."Godric begged but his voice only grew weaker until he couldn't make a sound as his brother kept talking.
"Now I'm going to keep you around for awhile Godric, just so I can have your memories and because that way you can see what I will do. And then eventually I will destroy your soul once I have turned everything you have built into a shadow of the future you had dreamed for it."
"Godric? Are you alright?" Melvin asked, making the wizard blink and look around to see that except for the halfling the other heroes were approaching the dead body with some surprise and wariness, as if expecting it to spring back to life the second they let their guard down.
"I'm fine my friend." Graydon replied with a grin. "After all, we've defeated the greatest evil in this land. We've won."
