RICHARD KIMBLE MEETS THE TWILIGHT ZONE
BY
KELLY BATTEN
SCENE 1. A MOTEL ROOM IN ANYWHERE USA
Richard Kimble is lying on his bed in a motel room. He came into some extra money recently on a job so he decided to stay in a better hotel. He stays in one that has cable TV. He is channel surfing. He comes across the movie "The Godfather" as it's starting. He sees Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone talking to people on the day of his daughter's wedding. No Sicilian can refuse a request on the day his daughter gets married.
Kimble starts to doze off. His last words are, "If only I had a godfather like Vito Corleone." He falls into a deep sleep.
Rod Serling steps into the room and says, "Meet Richard Kimble, a man who has been wrongly convicted of murdering his wife. He escaped from custody on the way to death row. He now searches in vain for the mysterious One Armed Man who actually killed his wife and for the evidence that will ultimately clear his name. He has been relentlessly pursued by an obsessed cop named Phillip Gerard. Everywhere Richard Kimble turns seems to lead to a dead end. However, all of that is about to change because, Richard Kimble is about to wake up in the Twilight Zone."
SCENE 2 IN THE CORLEONE HOME
Kimble finds himself waking up to the sound of someone knocking on his door. He looks around and sees that's not in the hotel room. The door opens and it's…"Sonny Corleone?"
"Hi Richard, Mom sad that you arrived really late last night and were tired but, I wanted to come in and introduce myself. You guessed right. I'm Michael's brother Sonny. It's so nice to meet you." Kimble stands up as they shake hands.
"It's nice to meet you Sonny." Kimble looks around and is very confused and then says, "Sonny, maybe I should leave. I have a feeling that I shouldn't be here." He looks out the window and sees there are people decorating the yard for a wedding.
"What are you talking about Richard? Michael told me what a great roommate you two were in college before he got this crazy notion of joining the Army. Anyway, Michael will be here later and he told to tell you to make yourself at home in the meantime."
"Sonny, you don't understand. There's a cop looking for me."
"Richard, we know all about Gerard. Let me tell you something. He's out of his jurisdiction here! If he dares to show his face here, he won't make it through the gate. I promise. Now you just get ready to attend a good old fashioned Sicilian wedding and have fun. If anyone asks, you're our cousin Vincent Corleone." He turns and walks out but, briefly stops and says, "You know, that name has a nice ring to it." He exits.
Kimble very confused says, "What is going on?"
SCENE 3 AT THE WEDDING RECEPTION
The wedding reception is in full swing. Kimble is surprised to see he is actually enjoying himself. He looks over at Connie who is hugging one of the bridesmaids. It's a woman with short dark brown hair. Kimble can't help but look at her and feel a bit thunderstruck. She looks back at him as though she knew he was looking at her and as their eyes meet, the feeling appears to be mutual. Kimble wants to approach her but then, Michael arrives with his girlfriend Kay Adams and sees Kimble. They approach him. "Richard! How's my favorite roommate doing? Kay this is the guy who got me through chemistry class."
Kay says, "It's nice to meet you Richard."
"Thank you both. Michael, I don't think it's a good idea for me to be here."
"Kay, why don't you go sit down and let me briefly catch up with Richard."
"All right!" She leaves the two of them alone.
"Richard, I told you to come here for a reason. I called my father and I explained everything to him about you. All you need to do is go in and ask."
Kimble very confused says, "Ask him what?"
"Richard, today is my sister Connie's wedding. No Sicilian can turn down a request on the day of his daughter's wedding."
"Michael, I'm still confused. What is it that I'm supposed to ask your father?"
"It's simple Richard. You go in and ask him to fix everything so you can have your life back. I spent two years living with you in a small dorm room. You're about as capable of cold blooded murder as I am."
"Well that is true but, can he really fix it?"
"He'll just make everyone an offer they can't refuse."
"You don't know Gerard, Michael."
"Hey, everyone's vulnerable Richard. You just have to find it. Now go talk to Pop."
Sonny approaches and says, "Michael, get Richard into the house. Gerard just arrived at the gate."
"I should leave."
"No Richard, you'll be safe. I promise, now go into the house and talk to Pop."
Kimble leaves. Sonny says, "Don't worry Michael. I'll handle the cop."
SCENE 4 OUTSIDE THE CORLEONE HOUSE
Sonny walks outside of the gates and meets Gerard and Eve Hilliard as they are getting out of the car.
"You people aren't on the guest list. You have no right to be here."
Gerard shows him a pictures and says, "We're looking for this man, Dr. Richard Kimble. We have reason to believe that he would show up here because he was your brother's roommate in college. He's wanted for murder."
"Yeah, well over half the guests here are wanted for murder! You have no jurisdiction here. Don't bother coming back unless you have a search warrant. Good luck getting a judge in New York to give you one." He turns and walks back in.
Eve says, "He's got a point Phillip."
Gerard looks at Eve and says, "Well Eve, Kimble may have found Sanctuary but, it won't last. He's got to leave sooner or later."
SCENE 5 VITO CORLEONE'S STUDY
Kimble is sitting with Vito Corleone who is holding a cat. Tom Hagen is in the room as well. "Michael has told me much about you Richard. He believes in you and I do too. A person who saves lives for a living is not a killer. What is it that I can do for you today Richard Kimble?"
"Mr. Corleone…"
"Please call me Godfather. You should call me Godfather."
"Godfather, I had a great life. My wife Helen was the best thing that ever happened to me. I wanted to grow old with her and have children with her."
"Ah yes, that's very important. Family is everything Richard. I have been greatly blessed."
"Godfather, the man who killed my wife is a man by name of Ben Charnquist and he's missing his right arm. Here's what he looks like." He shows them the passport photo and they look at it with interest. "He's somehow involved in a diamond smuggling operation that my father in law Matthew Ross is involved in and I'm sure he helped set me up to take this fall. Becca, his other daughter was the intended target of a kidnapping but, then they decided to go after Helen instead."
Vito and Tom look at each other with interest. Vito says, "Richard, are you sure that Matthew Ross is involved in the diamond smuggling operation?"
"Yes, I'm very sure."
"Do you know who is above Matthew Ross?"
"No, that's the most frustrating thing about this."
"What is it that you ask of me Richard Kimble?"
"Can you fix it so that I'm exonerated, the One Armed Man pays for killing Helen, and Matthew Ross also pays for setting me up and setting his daughters up for being harmed? Lastly, can you get this cop Gerard off of my tail once and for all?"
Vito nods his head as though he was in deep though and then says, "Yes, Richard I can do this and somewhere down the road, you can do me a favor or two."
"Thank you Godfather." He shakes Vito's hand and Vito gives him a look that says he's not satisfied with a handshake. Kimble then leans down and kisses Vito's hand.
"Now Richard, go outside and enjoy yourself!"
Kimble exits. Tom Hagen says, "You think this is the link with Palazzolo that we've been wondering about?"
"I have no doubt Tom. Palazzolo has been able to take that business right out from under all of us and it was because he had a middle man that no one knew about. Well now we know. Tom, I think it's time you paid Matthew Ross a visit and make him an offer he can't refuse! Do the same thing with Gerard as well. Let's make it a priority to find Ben Charnquist. Who is my next guest to see me?"
Tom opens the door and the bridesmaid that Kimble locked eyes with walks in. Vito smiles and says, "Kari! How are you today?"
Kari walks up and takes Vito's hand and kisses it. "Uncle Vito…I mean Godfather…"
"It's all right Kari, I am your uncle and your godfather so either one works."
"Thank you Godfather. I have a request."
"Then ask my dear."
"I finally have a name…it's Ben Charnquist…"
Vito and Tom looked at each other and before Kari can say anything else, Vito said, "Kari, consider it done. Give me all of the information."
SCENE 6 OUTSIDE AT THE RECEPTION
Kari walks out and sees Kimble standing by the food table. She walks up and says, "The lasagna is really good."
Kimble smiles and said, "I know, this is my second helping."
"I saw you earlier talking with Cousin Michael. Who are you?"
"I'm their cousin, Vincent Corleone."
Kari laughed slightly and said, "Sure you are. I know when someone's telling me a good lie."
"How do you know that?"
"I've got a PHD in Criminal Psychology and I'm a profiler. I've done enough interrogations to know when someone is giving me a line."
Kimble looks a little worried and said, "So what do you think I'm lying about?"
"Everything at the moment. However, today is Cousin Connie's wedding. I'm off duty and I really don't care what your story is because I saw Godfather after you did so I'm guessing you need help with a problem just as I do."
Kimble is intrigued by Kari and says, "Would you like to dance?"
"Sure and maybe you can tell who you really are or aren't."
They walk to the dance area, Kimble pulls her close and feels a certain stiffness to her as though she's not sure if she wants this type of intimacy but, then she relaxes, smiles and says, "We're on a very public dance floor. I don't think you'll try anything. Besides, I'd like to know who you really are."
Kimble smiles and says, "Who exactly are you?"
"I'm Kari Holmes and I'm a profiler with the FBI. My specialty is cold cases."
Kimble can't help but change his composure and Kari notices. "Is there something about the FBI that makes you nervous?"
"I'm surprised you're affiliated with the Corleone family. Your last name doesn't exactly sound Italian."
Kari smiles and said, "My mother's maiden name is Moultesani. That's Auntie Corleone's maiden name as well."
"You're in an odd line of business when you have relatives who are in the business that they are in."
"I don't work organized crime. I work cold cases that have nothing to do with organized crime."
"You work cold cases. I certainly could have used your assistance before now."
Kari raises her eyebrows and says, "What can I help you with…Vincent Corleone?"
"Nothing at this point. If Godfather Vito Corleone can come through, I'll be OK."
"I'll be OK too if Godfather can come through for me as well."
Michael comes over and says, "Kari, I see you've met my roommate from college, Richard."
Kari raises her eyebrows and says, "Roommate? Richard?" Michael then realizes he's said something wrong but before he or Richard can say anything else Kari says, "I like the name Richard much better." She breaks off of the dance and says, "Well, Richard, Michael, I need to be going." She turns to Richard and says, "Richard, I hope we meet again some time. I have a feeling you and I have much in common."
Michael says, "More than you realize Cousin…but, all in good time."
SCENE 7 CHICAGO ILL. MATTHEW ROSS'S STUDY
Tom Hagen is sitting in Ross's study. Ross comes in and sits down. "So Mr. Hagen, what can I do for you today?"
"Mr. Ross, I represent my client Vito Corleone. To make a long story short, we know about your little diamond smuggling operation with Palazzolo. The only plausible explanation is that you are his middle man here in Chicago. Now there was obviously some bad blood that transpired between the two of you, which we really don't care about. However, we do care about the operation and about Richard Kimble. There are things in this business you just don't do Mr. Ross. No one is supposed to get killed who hasn't done anything to deserve it. To hide behind the State of Illinois as your resident hit man is about as low as anyone can stoop. So here's the offer on the table. You let us take over your part of the operation and give us everything on Palazzolo and you tell us how Kimble was set up so he can be properly exonerated. That entails you telling us where to find Ben Charnquist and in return, you won't go to jail."
Matthew Ross is infuriated and says, "Mr. Hagen, I don't know who you think you are coming in here like this but you have nothing on me other than my loser son in law's accusations. I will not make any deals with you and you can tell Corleone that's my final answer!"
"All right then." Tom Hagen walks out.
SCENE 8 CHICAGO FUGITIVE TASK FORCE
Tom Hagen is sitting across from Gerard. Tom says to Gerard, "Capt. Gerard, this relentless pursuit of one man is a little ridiculous don't you think?"
"I don't think I have to justify my job to you Mr. Hagen…I know you and the Corleone's were harboring Richard Kimble at that wedding."
"Capt. Gerard, if you were to subpoena a guest list, you would know that there was no one by that name in attendance. As for justifying your job, I think you do." He leans in and says, "I know about what happened in Atlanta. They say revenge is a powerful motivator. I believe guilt is as well."
"What are you talking about? I have nothing to feel guilty about."
"You're responsible for your wife Lenore's death aren't you?"
"I take offense at that Mr. Hagen! I was run off the road by Jackson Menzies III and my wife's seatbelt jammed so she couldn't get out."
"Well, evidence is a curious thing Capt. Gerard. It can mean so many things. For example, in the case of Richard Kimble, there wasn't any DNA from anyone else in the apartment so therefore, the One Armed Man doesn't exist and since Kimble stood to gain $20 million, well it must be true."
"Of course it is. Why are we having this conversation? Are you now representing Richard Kimble?"
"I represent an interested party."
"The Corleone Family?"
"I'm not at liberty to say at the moment but, getting back to you and your wife Capt. Gerard, what about the $250 thousand you got from Lenore's life insurance policy because, there was a double indemnity clause in case of death not by natural causes…such as an accident. I have also been led to believe that you regularly carry a pocketknife. Why didn't you just cut the seatbelt off of Lenore? You were the one driving. Perhaps you could have driven better? Why did you happen to get a call from the babysitter that night just when it started to rain very badly?"
"Mr. Hagen, what is your point because I am this close to throwing you out of my office…literally."
"My point is this, lay off the Kimble case. There's an old saying I'm sure you've heard. Revenge is bittersweet."
"Get out!"
"As you wish." Tom Hagen leaves.
SCENE 9 NEW YORK CITY THREE DAYS LATER
Ben Charnquist is sitting in a sleazy strip club waiting for a contact to show up. Three men walk in dressed as police officers. One of them says, "Mr. Charnquist?"
Ben looks up and cautiously says, "Yes?"
"Come with us. You're under arrest." They grab Charnquist and shove out the door and against the back of a police car.
"What's the charge?"
The remove his gun. "Carrying a weapon without a permit, diamond smuggling, life insurance fraud, assault, murder, being a disgusting excuse for a human being. Take your pick."
They shove him into the back of the police car and Ben rolls his eyes and says, "Officers, would you mind putting a code into your computer?"
"Yes we do mind Ben because, you see, we're not really cops!" They start to laugh slightly.
Ben's eyes get wide and he says, "What?"
"Rule number one Ben, when a cop wants to arrest you, make sure you see his badge first. We're not going to the police station."
They pull up to an old abandoned warehouse. They get out of the car and walk in. Tom Hagen is there with Sonny and Michael. There is a table set up and a TV set. They shove Charnquist into the chair.
Michael looks at him with disgust and says, "You picked the wrong guy to set up for a murder charge. I consider Richard Kimble family and nobody messes with my family."
Ben looks at Michael defiantly and says, "Screw you!"
At that point Sonny walks up and smacks Ben across the face, punches him in the gut for good measure and says, "Man you are the lowest of the low. Beating an innocent woman to death, is about as low as it gets and then letting someone else take the rap. You're not even human."
"Who are you people?"
Tom Hagen says, "Hello Ben. I'm an attorney and we're here to do some business with you." He throws a safety deposit key on the table. "Do you know what this is for?"
"It's obviously for a safety deposit box."
"Yes it is. It's where your wife Renee hid all of the money that you and she scammed from the life insurance company."
Ben raises his eyebrows. "You don't say? She told me that the money was all spent."
"Well, she lied. Is that so hard to believe?"
Ben is silent for a second and then says, "Actually, no that's not hard to believe at all. Where is she?"
"Ah your timing's perfect." He turns on the TV and news reporter says, "And this just in, the body of a woman by the name of Renee Charnquist was found in the river just 90 minutes ago. The victim was strangled. The police believe that the motive for the crime was robbery." Tom shuts off the TV set.
Ben looks confused and says, "You guys offed my wife? Why? Because if you did…I'm not sure how to react."
"Well Ben, we made her an offer she wasn't supposed to refuse. Unfortunately for her, she did."
"OK, so what do you want from me?"
"It's simple really. We've already drawn up the paperwork. Just sign this confession saying that you killed Helen Kimble and the money is yours."
"Do you really think I'm that stupid? Why would I sign a confession so I can go to death row?"
"You won't go to death row. I've looked at the evidence. You can easily plea bargain it down to Manslaughter One. If you read the confession, it's clearly stating that you didn't mean to kill her. You were just trying to kidnap her and she wasn't a willing participant and it just got out of hand."
"What happens if I don't sign?"
"Then you'll be leaving this warehouse in a body bag."
"That wouldn't help Richard Kimble."
"Well Ben that really wouldn't be your problem. That would be mine. Now if there's any part of you that believes in a Higher Deity, are you ready to face Him today?
Ben sighs in frustration and says, "Do I get the money when I get out?"
"Of course Ben, you need that money to take care of yourself."
Ben lifts up the pen and signs his name to the confession. He puts the pen down and says, "Now what?" He feels a needle being injected into his neck and starts to fall to the floor. He manages to say, "You said you wouldn't kill me."
Tom replies, "We're not….but if you think you're going to prison, only to get out on parole in a few years so you can come after everybody who put you there….think again. Don't worry, that money of yours will come in handy! You'll need it to pay for your medical expenses!" Ben loses consciousness.
SCENE 10 PALAZZOLO'S HOUSE
Palazzolo sits in his study talking to Matthew Ross on the phone. "Matthew don't worry. Vito Corleone can't take over my operation as long as I'm alive. He wouldn't dare take me out. I'm too well liked by the other families. Relax." He hangs up the phone.
He gets up, grabs his coat and says to his butler, "Is my car out front? You know, I like to drive myself to the theater."
"Yes it is Sir. Have a good evening."
"I will." He walks out to the car, gets in and turns on the ignition. The car blows up.
The butler replies as he looks at the burning car. "You weren't as well liked as you think Sir!"
SCENE 11 MATTHEW ROSS'S HOUSE TWO DAYS LATER
Becca Ross walks into Ross's study with Tom Hagen, Richard Kimble and the police. Ross is shocked to see Kimble and says, "What are you doing here and why don't they have you in handcuffs?"
Kimble says, "I'm afraid the handcuffs are for you Matthew." He shows Ross a legal document.
Ross says, "This can't be happening."
"Oh it is. This will be hitting the newspapers in the morning and will probably hit the 11:00 PM news. How could you do it?"
"Becca, why is everyone here?"
Becca says, "Did you really think you could get away with it Daddy? Taking part in the diamond smuggling and then trying to skim a portion off the top for yourself. Did you really think Palazzolo wouldn't find out and do something about it? If Helen were here, I think we both know what she would be saying. I found my way into your very private computer files Daddy. You left an electronic paper trail for who you paid off to frame Richard for Helen's murder just so you could save your backside. Once I found that, it wasn't too difficult to make some calls to figure out where Charnquist could be found. You make me sick. I hope you rot in prison!"
"Becca, I had no choice. How can you turn on me like this? I'm your father."
"Helen was my sister and besides, Tom Hagen here gave me an offer I just couldn't possibly refuse. With you in jail, I've got it all!"
A police officer approaches Ross and cuffs him and says, "Mr. Ross, you're under arrest for obstruction of justice, perjury, diamond smuggling and conspiracy to commit the murder of Richard Kimble."
"You have no proof of that last charge."
"Please Daddy, Mr. Hagen also paid a visit to Karl Vasick in prison who sang like a bird in exchange for possibly getting an early parole. Cut the innocent routine once and for all." Ross is taken out as the cop is reading him his rights.
Gerard then comes running in with Eve Hilliard and Eddie Miles. "Well, Ms. Ross and Mr. Hagen, I don't know how you two lured Kimble here but I'm glad you did. Eve cuff him as he's going to Joliet. By the way, why was Ross just take out of here?"
Kimble replies, "Gerard, before you put cuffs on me, why don't you look at this." He hands him a sheet of paper.
Gerard looks dumbfounded and says, "How could the Governor of Illinois just grant you a full pardon in the blink of an eye?"
Tom Hagen replies, "Ben Charnquist signed a full confession explaining that he really was in the Kimble apartment and he killed Helen Kimble."
"Ben Charnquist is dead."
"No Capt. Gerard, he's very much alive and in a nursing home. You see, I think the guilt was just too much for him because after he signed the confession, he suffered a terrible stroke on his left side. It was so bad, he'll never be normal again."
"This can't be happening."
Eve says, "Phillip, it is. The pardon has gone through, Charnquist confessed and it looks like Matthew Ross was somehow involved the whole time. It's over. Dr. Kimble, speaking for myself, I'm sorry and for what it's worth, I did have a few doubts about your guilt. I'm glad those doubts turned out to be well placed."
"Thank you Agent Hilliard."
Two Federal Marshalls walk in and say, "We're looking for Phillip Gerard."
"I'm Phillip Gerard."
"What a coincidence." The one marshall says, "My name is Sam Gerard and we've been instructed to escort you back to Atlanta."
"Why do I have to be escorted back to Atlanta?"
"Capt. Gerard, I hate to be the one to do this but, you're under arrest for the murder of Lenore Gerard. We have a signed statement by Jackson Menzies III stating that you would look the other way on any illegal dealings he had in his business if he'd help you stage an accident for your wife. It's all in here about how her seatbelt was tampered with. Unfortunately, he can't be prosecuted for the crime because the double jeopardy law applies here since he already beat the rap."
"No, this is crazy. Don't do this. Please, Lenore was my life."
Kimble pipes up and says, "Now where have I heard that line before? Oh yeah, I think I said it the day you arrested me Gerard! I'm sorry about gloating but, you really have to appreciate the irony here."
Gerard pulls out his gun, points it at everyone and says, "I'm not going to prison today!"
Kimble says, "Now Gerard, think about this. You don't want to do this."
"I don't want any of this. I didn't kill my wife!"
"Well, the evidence says differently and your gun in your hand isn't going to make any difference…is it my imagination Gerard, or are we having some kind of déjà vu experience here?"
Eve then says, "Dr. Kimble, this isn't helping. Phillip put the gun down. Go to Atlanta and work this out!"
"NO! I'll clear my name! I didn't kill my wife!" He jumps through the glass, lands in the yard and escapes out the back.
Sam Gerard says, "Where's the back up?"
Tom says, "I think it all left with Ross. I'm sorry Marshall Gerard, I had no idea you guys were going to show up tonight."
Sam Gerard says, "All right, put out an APB on Capt. Phillip Gerard." He walks out with the other marshall.
Eddie comments to Eve, "Eve this is really messed up. Phillip kills Lenore and is obviously in some kind of denial about it but, feels guilty and so he transfers all of that guilt onto Kimble."
"I know Eddie. It is really messed up and that's why I won't rest until Phillip Gerard is brought to justice. Let's go." Eve and Eddie exit leaving Kimble, Becca and Tom in the study.
Kimble says, "Tom, I don't know how to thank you other than to say that if there's ever anything I can do for Godfather Vito, let me know."
Becca says, "Ditto for me too!"
"Your loyalty is much appreciated. Until we meet again, have a good life both of you." He exits.
Kimble says, "Becca, I'm really sorry about Matthew. He was your father and you lost him tonight."
"Well Richard, he was a lot of things. As for losing him, that happened the day he testified against you in court." She hugs him and he hugs her. "Take care of yourself Richard."
"You too, Becca."
SCENE 12 KIMBLE'S APARTMENT IN NEW YORK
Kimble is awakened to the sound of his beeper going off. He picks up the beeper and sees that it's the hospital. He calls and the nurse says, "Dr. Kimble, Vito Corleone has been shot five times and the family is insisting that you do the surgery."
Kimble looks in the mirror and sees his hair is back to being its natural sandy blond color and says, "I'll be there as fast as I can." He hangs up the phone.
There is a knock at the door. Kimble opens it and it's Sonny Corleone. "Sonny, I was just on my way."
"Come in our limousine Richard. You've got to help Pop!"
"I'll do my best. I promise!"
They arrive at the hospital and Kimble saves Vito's life.
SCENE 13 LATER THAT NIGHT
Kimble is doing his rounds and finds that no one is guarding Vito Corleone. There isn't even a nurse close by. All of a sudden he hears a woman's voice behind him. "Where are Uncle Vito's bodyguards?"
He turns around to see the woman who caught his eye at Connie's wedding…FBI Agent Kari Holmes. "I've got to call someone. You should leave, this could be dangerous."
She then pulls out her gun and says, "If Uncle Vito is in danger, then I've got to be here. I owe him. He took care of a certain One Armed Man for me."
Kimble raises his eyebrows and says, "Ben Charnquist?"
"How did you know? Wait a minute, I'm sorry. I didn't recognize you with your natural hair color. You're the Richard that I met at Cousin Connie's wedding and I later found out you were Richard Kimble. It looks like we had similar requests for Uncle Vito. Anyway, let's move Uncle Vito out of his room."
Just then Michael walks in. "Richard, Kari, thank God you two are with him. I just called Sonny and he's bringing the troops over."
Kimble says, "Michael, we were going to move him out of here."
"You must have been reading my mind. Let's go." They move Vito into another room.
Michael says, "I'm going to go out front."
Kimble says, "Maybe we should go too."
"No, you two can't get mixed up in this. I don't want either of you in danger."
"That's unacceptable Michael." Kari says while holding her gun.
"Cousin Kari, you have done much to protect our family at the FBI and you're above reproach. If the wrong person sees you here, it could ruin that and Pop wouldn't want that. Hey, now that Ben Charnquist has been take care of for both of you. Why don't you two go somewhere and get better acquainted?"
Richard says, "Are you sure you don't need our help here Michael?"
At that moment, Sonny, Tom and bodyguards come running in. Sonny says, "They're all out front Michael. We've got to go out and confront them." He looks at Kari and Kimble and says, "You two go out the back. Don't get mixed up in this. Richard, we can't thank you enough. I think Pop will conclude that your favor has been repaid."
Michael replies, "I agree Richard. I don't think anyone else in the family will be getting shot!" Michael, Tom and Sonny run out the front. Kimble and Kari go out the back.
SCENE 14 ON THE STREET BEHIND THE HOSPITAL
The two are walking along the street when Kimble says, "Michael said we should get better acquainted. Are you game for that?"
"I think I'd like that."
"You know at the wedding, I felt like we sort of had a connection and I wanted to ask you out but, since I was wanted at the time, it didn't seem like a good idea with you being a federal agent and all."
She smiles and says, "Well, I meant what I said at the wedding that I hoped we would meet again. I had no idea it would be under these circumstances. So now that we're here together, why don't we go to a Starbuck's and have a latte and talk."
"OK and can I ask why you wanted Ben Charnquist taken care of?"
"I'm going to tell you this because Ben Charnquist took something from you. He took something from me. When I was in college I was sexually assaulted and he was the guy who did it."
"Oh my God! Kari that should have never happened to you."
"It shouldn't have happened to either of us or to Helen. I lived to tell the tale. It's more than what Helen got."
"Are you all right?"
"It was a long time ago. No, one is ever all right after something like that but, we can feel better and knowing that Ben Charnquist is in a nursing home paralyzed for the rest of his life on the one side of his body that still has an arm is vindication. He has to lay there every day and think about all of the horrible things he's done. Do you feel better knowing that?"
"Yeah, I do feel much better knowing that."
They smile at each other and Kimble then sees a newspaper with Phillip Gerard's picture on the front page. The headline reads "Fugitive Cop Still At Large." Kimble raises his eyebrows at the irony and then decides to give Gerard no further thought.
Kimble looks at Kari and says, "So what kind of latte or mocha do you like?" She smiles at him as he opens the door to the Starbucks and they walk in.
SCENE 15
Rod Serling comes out again and says, "There is an old saying that says, What goes around comes around. When justice cannot be found through proper channels, justice will always be found one way or another in…The Twilight Zone."

I hope you all enjoyed this story. I wrote this years ago when I was doing team writing for the Fugitive 2000 which starred Tim Daly as Richard Kimble. I thought it would be fun to explore Richard Kimble stepping through the Twilight Zone, meeting the Corleone Family and seeing if he could find justice.
Kari Holmes is a made up character that I created as a love interest as I thought that was something that the series was lacking. Anyone familiar with the show knows that the other characters were on the TV series with the exception of Palazzolo which was a character invented by another team writer.
I also thought that since this was the Twilight Zone that it would be fun to incorporate Sam Gerard from the movie "The Fugitive" that starred Harrison Ford as Richard Kimble.
