1. The Blind Side
As the engagement party of Chloe and Jimmy came to a close, Clark couldn't help but keep Lois in his sights. She had been drinking throughout the night, needing to be saved once from a speech she was making and another time as a guest sidled up to her, coaxing her to a dimly lit section of the venue. Clark was about to pull the guy back when Lois twisted the man's arm and pushed him against the wall. The mystery man then whimpered away. Wide-eyed, Clark was impressed she could do that in her inebriated state and also, if the curves of his lips had given any indication,...proud? He was only looking out for her, but her even entertaining the mystery man's attention made his stomach tighten. He brushed it off. It was just bad vibes. He wanted to make sure she was safe. That was all.
And that's also where he got himself into his current predicament.
On his way toward the alleyway, he watched as Lois stumbled out the back exit door. He had been counting the glasses of champagne she drank since he met her at the bar. It had stopped at six. Mainly it stopped because he told the bar tender and waiters to stop serving her. He tried to get her some coffee, but with his back turned she had slipped away. That was until a little help from his superhearing and x-ray vision pinpointed her trying to get back to the apartment.
Lois took a deep breath and tried her best to sober herself up enough to get home. She was an ace at containing her liquor, a real MVP. She could do this. It was only champagne. Hell, add some orange juice and you could have it for breakfast, that's how soft it was. She just need some music to pump her up and clear the cobwebs. She went through the anthologies that her mind could conjure up, especially with the theme of love and wedded bliss that she still didn't see.
Managing not to slur her words she sang, "There were times I almost let you go. When I thought I needed to break free, but you were there to whisper in my ear-why don't you share my dreams with me?"
Clark grimaced as she the words that tumbled out of her mouth held emotion. He wondered if she was thinking about Oliver and if Chloe and Jimmy's happiness had triggered something inside of her. He couldn't lie and say he hadn't had one crossing thought about Lana during the evening. Though, Lois had certainly occupied his time and what he thought would have been harder to get through turned out to be more bearable than imagined.
Lois spotted Clark as he walked toward her. The six foot blur started to affect her tone and pitch. Her voice got louder as she sang, "So when the sun goes down. An those nights are growing colder. I will be there, Looking over your shoulder" She looked over her shoulder and laughed as she turned back to him. "No one's there. Why?" She pointed at him. "Because Lois Lane can watch over her own shoulder!"
She started to stumble back around, away from him, when the heel of her right shoe got caught in a crack of the asphalt.
"Whoo!" She called out as her arms flailed in the air. She was heading down and suddenly understood the crooning about chasing pavements she heard on the radio, or so she thought.
Watching the scene unfold, Clark shifted into superspeed and reached Lois as she fell. His arms wrapped around her, for a second time that evening, and held her before she touched the ground.
Lois looked up at him. She was surprised by his ultra quick reflexes, but also her eyes were not as focused she would like. Before her were two Clarks.
'Two Clarks?' she thought. 'One is bumbling and the other my hero.'
She started to giggle, which caught Clark off guard.
She whispered as she sang, looking deep into his eyes, "I don't mind, what you're doing to me. I don't mind, 'cause you're all I can see. I don't mind, baby, you mean the world to me."
The lyrics danced around his brain. He felt like he had heard them before. He soon connected the dots realizing they were from the mixed CD Lois had made him while under the influence of red kryptonite lip stick years ago.
There was partial relief that she was just singing Whitesnake. Yet, why did it feel like the song was directed at him?
