Asami glanced out of the enormous windows of the freshly constructed Future Industries' office. Steady fall rain continued to pelt the building. The heavy grey morning sky made it seem much later in the day than it was.
She stifled a yawn and with some effort turned her attention back to the meeting. The conference room was packed with board members, representatives from two Earth Kingdom cities and, just for good measure, a few lawyers. Arguments shot across the table and little headway had been made since the obscenely early start time of the meeting. Asami inwardly groaned. This was devolving into a colossal waste of time. She had hoped that this Saturday morning meeting would be short and light. Something that allowed everyone to meet before the real negotiations took place about Republic City expansion efforts and maybe get some positive momentum moving forward.
This was not proving to be the case. It was like everyone woke up this morning, saw it was raining and decided to be as difficult as possible because what else did they have to do on a stormy weekend? Asami couldn't help but smile at this. A year or two ago she might have been right there with them. With absolutely nothing to look forward to when she got home except for cold silence, she would have spent all of Saturday and Sunday arguing everyone into submission.
But not now.
It had been ridiculously difficult dragging herself out of bed when her alarm had gone off that morning. It was still pitch black outside and she could hear the rain was already falling in full force. Korra had rolled over toward her, snuggling in close while pulling the blankets tightly around them and began fondling her breast, still half asleep. She had mentally kicked herself repeatedly for agreeing to this meeting, the multi-million yuan contract for city expansion be damned.
The only thing that had persuaded her to pull away from her girlfriend and climb out of their warm bed was the knowledge that thousands of families relied on her to keep the company healthy and not throw away multi-million yuan contracts. Republic City had made considerable strides toward recovery since Kuvira's attack but there were still a lot of citizens that needed steady employment in order to recuperate their losses.
But it was becoming clear that as wonderful as this expansion project would be for the economy, it was not going to happen today.
"Shall we take a break for breakfast and resume in, say, one hour?" one of the board members asked during a lull in the arguments. "Seems like everyone could use a chance to clear their heads."
"No," Asami said flatly.
The entire room turned to look at her.
"This meeting is over. We've been at this for three hours and not a single productive idea has been brought to this table and we all know it. This expansion project isn't some political power flex. It would benefit everyone with more jobs and desperately needed affordable housing. Clearly no one wants to talk about that today. So the meeting is done. You can submit any proposals you come up with to Future Industries at a later date when you all have had time to think things over."
With that, Asami walked out of the conference room. It was a bit of a risk but she doubted the representatives would back down from the project. There was way too much to gain. But she wasn't going to waste another second listening to them bicker when she had more important things waiting for her at home.
The short drive back to the penthouse apartment took a little longer than usual thanks to traffic snarls caused by the rain. Asami didn't mind. She was just glad to finally be out of the office and heading home.
Home.
Just thinking the word now left her with a contented feeling. She and Korra had decided to move in together a few months ago after returning from Gaoling. Even though Asami had fully recovered from Guan's brainwashing, the experience had left both of them acutely aware of how precious and fragile the thing was between them. It no longer felt right to be bouncing back and forth between the estate and Air Temple Island. Besides, Korra had been practically living at the mansion full-time anyway.
Asami had been elated when Korra agreed to live with her. And, being Asami Sato, wanted to do things right and not cut any corners. The estate was beautiful and spacious but for Asami it was nothing more than a large shell that harbored difficult memories. Any happy childhood moments she had at that house were overshadowed by the ghosts of her mother dying, her father nearly trying to kill her and her time spent in miserable isolation, not knowing if the woman she loved was ever going to recover.
She had wanted a fresh beginning. One where she and Korra could make their own memories together.
And so she had spared no expense purchasing the two upper floors of a freshly constructed apartment tower complex. She had poured her heart and soul into remodeling the place, wanting it to be perfect for them. Korra had gently teased her a few times about the obsessive level of detail she was pouring into the project. "Don't think you're going to get any extra favors just because you're trying to spoil me," she had said with a wink when Asami was walking her through the construction.
Asami didn't mind. On some level she had found the process to be oddly therapeutic. The last time she had obsessed that much over a project had been during the design and construction of Korra's park statue. Spending entire nights working on Korra's likeness had made Asami feel close to her. It had given her the rare glimmers of hope when thinking about what a future could be like for them if Korra ever returned. And she did return. So their first shared living space needed to be a testament to the future that Asami had desperately dreamed about for so long.
And despite what Korra said, Asami thought with a smug grin as she pulled into her parking space, I got a lot of extra favors that first night we spent here.
The penthouse elevator doors opened into a spacious entryway and living room. When it was sunny, natural light would pour in from every direction from the windows that lined almost the entire outside of the first floor of their living space. Comfortable furniture and wall decorations hailing from all four world nations that had been given to the Avatar as gifts of goodwill made the room feel interesting and inviting. Every time Asami was greeted by the charming ambiance she couldn't help but think that all her obsessing had been worthwhile.
The alluring smell of breakfast pulled Asami out of her reverie and toward the kitchen.
As proud as she was of her architectural prowess, absolutely nothing compared to what she privately thought was the best view in the house. Korra stood there in her robe while whistling slightly off-tune as she flipped whatever it was she was making in the pan. The small kitchen radio was blasting out the play-by-play of the pro bending weekend match that was taking place that day. Asami crossed her arms as she leaned on the entryway frame, smiling as Korra stopped whistling to argue with the radio. "Oh come ON, ref! That was a cheap shot! Boooooo!"
She turned toward two plates that she had set out and began dividing the contents of the pan into two equal portions. "You're back!" she beamed, finally noticing Asami standing there. "I wasn't sure if you were coming back for breakfast but I made you some anyway."
Asami arched an eyebrow. "Oh? So you're saying if I wasn't here you would have had leftovers?"
"Erm… maybe... I mean… anything is possible when it comes to avatar powers..."
Asami laughed as she closed the distance between. They both knew that Korra was the undisputed queen of the clean plate club.
She backed Korra into the kitchen counter and lowered her head to claim her lips in a deep kiss. Korra reached up and ran her fingers through Asami's hair, pulling her in closer and enthusiastically returned the embrace. Asami felt her body sigh with contentment. This was what she had been wanting all morning. She reached up and slid her hands under the lapels of Korra's robe and made the titillating discovery that her girlfriend was wearing a robe… and nothing else. Asami moaned and intensified the kiss as her hands massaged the soft flesh, teasing the nipples into hard peaks. She was never again scheduling another weekend meeting. Ever.
Korra broke away from the kiss. "Breakfast."
Asami's lust-fogged brain didn't understand. "Wha… What?"
"Let's eat breakfast. Before it gets cold. I think you'll like what I made."
Asami glanced down at her hands, still cupping Korra's breasts, and then back up at Korra. "What if I'm cold and need to warm up?"
"Nuh uh." She flashed Asami her most charming crooked smile that she knew made Asami weak at the knees. "You and I both know that we are probably going to go at it for hours. We need our strength and I'm hungry."
Quelling her simmering urges, Asami slowly pulled her hands away with a groan. Breakfast did smell good.
"Here," Korra handed Asami the two steaming plates of food. "If you grab the food, I'll get the tea and chopsticks. You wanna eat on the roof?"
Asami nodded and headed for the private access stairway. "The roof" could be more accurately termed "a conservatory." Besides a gym, it had been Korra's only special request during construction. The request had made Asami do a mental double take about what she thought she knew about her girlfriend. They knew each other so well yet there were still new facets to each other's personalities that managed to reveal themselves. When she had asked Korra about the sudden interest Korra had merely shrugged and said that she thought it might do her some good to make things grow rather than thinking about all the things she had destroyed.
Korra had asked for a small greenhouse but naturally Asami had gone over-the-top in designing a top-of-the line temperature controlled dome made entirely out of industrial grade, reinforced glass. The result was probably several orders of magnitude beyond what Korra had envisioned but she was still quite happy working in the space. In just a few short months Korra had already acquired a number of interesting species and built a raised bed with the apparent intention of starting some vegetables. With the addition of a small table and chairs, the roof had quickly become a favorite spot for both of them, especially when it rained. There was something indescribably peaceful about watching the raindrops fall and slide across the dome.
Asami set down the plates and heaved a sigh of relief as she sagged into her chair. "I missed you."
Korra giggled as she joined her and poured them both some tea. "You were only gone for a few hours."
"I know but it was a really long couple of hours."
"Rough meeting?"
"The worst. Mmmm! This is really good."
"Thanks! I seasoned the eggs with some new herbs I picked up when I went to the Fire Nation two weeks ago. I'm trying to grow some more."
"You should. This is fantastic."
"So what happened at the meeting?"
"Ugh. Mostly just arguing. No one wanted to agree on anything or even come to some sort of basic common ground. It put listening to Tenzin and Pema's kids to shame."
"Ouch. That is rough."
"They wanted to reconvene after a break but I called it off. Nothing was going to get done today."
"And you wanted your snazzy and awesome girlfriend to pamper you with breakfast?"
"Basically."
"Oh! Speaking of awesome girlfriend things, I had an idea for the mansion."
Asami raised both eyebrows, silently urging Korra to continue. Mako and Bolin's family had moved back to Ba Sing Se after the government had stabilized (their grandma wanting to follow King Wu may or may not have had anything to do with the decision). And since Asami and Korra had moved out the place was vacant other than a skeleton crew kept there to maintain the grounds.
"Well since you still aren't sure about selling it since both of your parents are buried there, I was thinking that it might make a pretty neat museum location. You could have exhibits about automotive history or the history of Future Industries or whatever! I'm sure you could easily sell tickets for a chance to whirl around the infamous private Sato racetrack."
"That is… actually a really good idea." Asami sat stunned for a moment trying to process all the new possibilities.
"Uh oh."
This snapped Asami out of her calculations. "What? What's wrong?"
"I know that look. Whenever you have that look, I won't see you for days sometimes because you've holed yourself up in your workshop. Does this mean we're not going to go at it for hours?"
"Oh you are definitely still on the hook. Don't think I've forgotten that you're not wearing anything under that robe. I am not about to let this perfectly good rainy day go to waste."
xXxXxXx
"Oh spirits, YES!" Korra gripped the headboard with bruising force with one hand while clutching Asami's head with the other, desperately trying to keep her tongue locked into place. "Don't stop! PLEASE don't stop!"
Asami smiled with a twinge of pride as she heard the avatar become more and more unraveled above her. She had been teasing Korra for nearly an hour now. She had patiently coaxed her body until it was almost at the breaking point before stopping, denying her the release. The teasing had continued over and over again until Korra finally couldn't take it any longer. She flipped Asami over onto her back and positioned herself directly over Asami's face. The message was clear.
"GAHHHH! ASAMIIII!"
Korra's hips were rocking and bucking in erratic patterns. Asami intensified the flicking of her tongue while finally finishing Korra off with a strong thrust of two fingers into her soaking wet channel. Korra threw her head back and came with a strangled scream. Moisture gushed around Asami's fingers as she felt the inner muscles clutch at her in intense waves. She didn't stop until every last ripple had subsided and Korra collapsed in a heap on the bed.
Asami snuggled up closer to Korra as she attempted to catch her breath. She heard the wind start to howl through the city buildings and the rain intensified. The sound of Korra's heartbeat grounded her in the moment. It was always amazing to Asami how just simply being in Korra's presence made her stresses and worries and grief lessen. It was a quality that her employees were probably grateful for. She inwardly grimaced when she thought about how she had acted during Korra's absence. To say she had become a workaholic would have been putting it nicely. It was a wonder that none of her executive assistants had quit.
Korra ran lazy fingers up and down Asami's back. As promised, they had been going at it for hours. What had started as slow lovemaking turned into several more rounds of something far more wild and uninhibited. Their first night together had been mind-blowing. It had been a release from past hurt and pain. A new beginning. But what they had now… words couldn't accurately describe. Now free of its bonds, the passion that burned between them had forged a deep, almost spiritual connection.
"I don't think I ever said 'thank you,'" Korra said, breaking the comfortable silence between them.
"For what?"
"For building us this place. And for just… I dunno… building a life with me. I've had so much bad stuff happen to me but when I think about our life together I think that I'm the luckiest person alive. You make everything in my life better."
"Funny you mention that. I was just thinking the same thing."
Korra chuckled. "We're such saps."
"You never have to thank me, Korra. You should know by now that I would do anything for you."
"And I'd do anything for you."
Asami raised an eyebrow. "Anything?"
Korra nodded earnestly.
"What about that firebending thing you did to me earlier where you superheated your fingertips? That felt amazing."
Korra grinned. "Flameo, hotman."
