It was mid December, the leaves were gone and the Castle of Carona was filled with the whitest snow this year.. The princess sat at her vanity as her maid brushed her hair, she smiled at herself as the brush stroked down her long beautiful chestnut colored hair, every stroke the brush did carefully hugged each stand making it softer than it was before.
"I can't wait till Mary gets here, so I can show her the new paint set father got me for my birthday!" The princess said with joy to her maid as she was getting her ready for her majesty's friend's arrival. Mary was a long time friend of the family and a Royal as well.
The maid laughed at the princesses' excitement for she knew something she didn't but she enjoyed her enthusiasm, always.
"I'm sure it will be a good day my princess. Now, all done." The maid said as she set down the brush on the vanity made of marble.
The princess stood up quickly as she heard a carriage arrive.
"Ekkk!! Mel ! It's Mary, she's here!!" The princess jumped for joy.
Mel, short for Melissa, was the princesses personal maid and like a second mother, she had seen her grow up since she was born.
"Rapunzel !" Mel said laughing. "We still need to add your crown!"
"Oh, I'm so sorry Mel, I'm just too excited. I'm going to ruin all your hard work" She replied with an embarrassed smile.
"Haha no you won't, you look beautiful no matter what" Mel said, adding Rapunzel's crown.
The princess was wearing a beautiful off the shoulders red gown that had beading all around which shimmered in the sunlight. It was one of her favorites, not too extravagant but not too simple a gown she could move around in, along with black short heels with the same beading as her dress.
"Come on ! Let's go!" Rapunzel said, pulling her maids hand as she quickly.
"Rapunzel wait! Before we go I need to tell you something!" Mel said as she was swept away.
Rapunzel couldn't hear anything, only to feel her excitement she ran to the stairs that lead down into the front hallway when she stopped in her tracks. Her friend's parents were there "The Overlands-Frost's" but her friend was nowhere to be found, instead there was a talk boy next to them laughing along with her friends parents and her own parents. It took a minute before they realized she was up there but for the boy it was the moment she got there. No one else saw her but him. He was suddenly mesmerized, all that mattered in the room was her. They both couldn't take their eyes off of each other until Mel brought Rapunzel out of thought.
"Go on" she said, smiling at Rapunzel encouraging her to go down to meet the boy.
Rapunzel looked at her nervously and indecisive. Then back down at the direction of the boy, she suddenly felt shy. She put her left hand on the rail while the other lifted her dress as she walked down the stairs carefully. The boy hadn't realized the soft smile that grew on his face.
"Honey!" Her mom yelled out to her.
Rapunzel gave her a nervous smile.
"You remember our daughter." Rapunzel's father said to the Overlands.
"Ah yes ! Mary's faithful friend" Queen Overland replied back as Rapunzel joined them next to her parents giving everyone a smile.
Rapunzel could feel the boy staring at her but she avoided his gaze, she felt nervous but with butterflies now that she was closer to him. Why was she so unsettled? She had been meeting suitors all month. Why was he any different?
"How are you dear?" Queen Overland said, giving Rapunzel a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
"I'm well your highness, thank you for asking." She said with a smile.
"Oh how good, I would like to introduce you to someone, this is our son" She said quickly going over to the boy that was next to her as she gave him a gentle push forward. The boy stopped a few feet away from Rapunzel and both felt their heart race. Rapunzel looked at him finally making eye contact as his voice swept her off her feet.
"Hi there Princess, I'm... Jackson Overland Frost. Prince of...The North Polian" He said taking her hand softly which made her heart race even faster at his touch then it was like a hundred butterflies fluttered in her stomach as kissed her hand softly.
"P-Princess Rapunzel of Corona..." Jackson's heart skipped a beat at her reply, not expecting her to reply like every other princess who thought highly of themselves, instead she gave him a sweet smile at his gesture, which threw him off for a second. He had hoped she hadn't noticed how badly he did his introduction, he almost forgot where he was from! She was definitely the reason for it, her beauty was breathtaking and she had the sweetest smile, how was he going to concentrate? He thought to himself. He had got there ready to get over with the courtship but now he was hoping it would never end. He finally let go of her hand and composed himself, clearing his throat.
Rapunzel admired him for a minute as their parents began to converse again, Jackson avoided Rapunzel's gaze feeling so embarrassed about earlier that it gave Rapunzel some time to look at him carefully. He was dressed in formal prince attire but unique from all the others, it was black/dark blue suit with his chest wrapped with a gold strap that held a sword on his left hip he was slim and super tall and he wore his prince crown that shimmered in the bright lighting that beamed in the castle from the glass windows in the ceilings. Jackson then finally couldn't resist avoiding looking over at Rapunzel and turned to steal a quick glance but instead locked eyes with her as she was about to look at his features. He gave her a soft smile not knowing the joy he had inside catching her staring at him. Rapunzel blushed lightly then turned her attention to Jackson's parents.
"Um padorn, sorry for interrupting but is Mary coming?" She said in a soft voice.
"My sister still had a month of school so she couldn't make it sadly but hopefully she can next time." Replied a heart throbbing voice.
Rapunzel looked over at him not knowing what to say.
"Oh uh, I see." She was only able to make out.
"Well, this is a different occasion dear, so I don't think you and Mary could have caught up too much" Rapunzel's mother chimed in.
"Oh, what do you mean?" Rapunzel said confusedly.
"We come to introduce our son as a suitor for you princess! I just think you both would be splendid" Queen Overland said with excitement.
Jackson squinted with a tiny bit of embarrassment as she said that sentence, he would have wished he didn't come as a suitor, they were more for an arranged marriage and pressure someone into marriage as well, he was doing it for his parents but now that he had met a girl he was truly interested in he would have wanted it to be different with her.
Rapunzel had a feeling he had come as a suitor, she wasn't surprised but she wasn't disappointed either, just thrown off.
"Ah well, that's definitely a surprise." Rapunzel replied with a big confused smile.
Jackson felt he had to say something at her response feeling bad now that she was ambushed into this.
"I'm sorry, this was just a thought my parents thought of. You really don't have to go through with this. I don't want you to feel any pressure to do so"
" Jackson!" his mom said in a stern voice.
"Um no it's okay, I want to go through with it. That's if you want to also..." Rapunzel replied not losing eye contact with Jackson and gave him a warm genuine smile.
"Um no yeah, I mean yes! I'm sorry that was um, I would love to...also" He said fumbling with his words.
Jackson's heart felt like it was doing somersaults, did she really just say that? He tried not to show how happy he was and gave her a smile back. They were so into each other they hadn't noticed their parents smiling at them knowing this was the perfect match.
"Honey, why don't you show the prince around," Rapunzel's mother insisted.
"Oh yes, come, I'll show you my favorite place of the castle" Rapunzel said with excitement. Forgetting this was a courtship.
Jackson gave out a small laugh at her excitement he knew was going to be one of his many favorite things about her.
Rapunzel took Jackson to the back garden. The snow covered every inch of their surroundings in a white blanket. As they walked out Jackson suddenly stopped in his tracks confused.
"Wait! Princess?"
"Yes?" She turned around to face him.
"Don't you need your coat?" Jackson asked, confused.
Rapunzel smiled at him realizing how sweet he was remembering her coat and seeing his puzzled look made her feel a certain way.
"I'm okay Jackson...I love the snow, now come on!" She said, smiling at him. Then turning around to continue walking.
'I love the snow' that sentence made Jackson feel warm inside. And then went to catch up to her.
"Jack," He said.
"Huh?" Rapunzel looked over at him confused.
"You can call me Jack, Jackson is my birth name but everyone knows me by Jack"
"Oh okay, Jack," Rapunzel said with a smile.
That sent shivers down Jack's spine, her saying his name sent him over the moon.
"So Rapunzel, you said you liked the snow."
"Yeah ever since I was little, my favorite memories are in the snow. Playing snowball fights, hide and go seek. I can't remember a day where I haven't been that happy."
"Most people would say they hate the snow cause it's too 'cold'" He teased.
"Well not me, I love it!" Rapunzel said picking up a bit of snow.
"What about you? Mary never told me of a brother..." she said shyly
Jack laughed and shook his head as they walked beside each other down a path.
"I'm not really around much. So it's probably like she doesn't have a brother at all."
"What do you mean?" Rapunzel asked
"My parents sent me away when she was about 6, I've been studying since then at a very fancy and very boring school" He said in a mocking way.
Rapunzel laughed at his statement.
"That's why you haven't met me..." Jack said sadly trying not to look over at Rapunzel who was staring at him trying to read him.
"Well, I met you now." Rapunzel said in a comforting voice. Which made them stop in their tracks.
Jack looked over at Rapunzel looking at him with happiness in her eyes.
"Yeah, that's true." He said, giving her a smile back as he took her hand.
When suddenly it started snowing lightly.
Rapunzel's face lit up as she looked up into the sky and a big smile grew on her face. Jack's smile didn't disappear; he simply admired her taking in the moment.
"Oh my goodness! It wasn't supposed to snow for a week!" Rapunzel said. But didn't let go of Jack's hand.
"Rapunzel..." He asked her.
"Yeah?" She turned to him still smiling.
"Nothing," Jack replied, not wanting to ruin the moment.
They continued to walk without untangling their hands.
After a few hours which seemed like only minutes they still had so much to talk about.
"So his name is pascal? Like the color 'pastel' because you love painting?"
"Yeah! I thought it would be cute." Rapunzel replied.
Jack smiled at her reply and just the way she said it.
"It's perfect," He replied.
She beamed with joy then looked forward taking a deep breath in of cold air when they were suddenly below a tree and Jack thought of an idea. Without Rapunzel seeing he made snow fall down onto her.
Rapunzel gasped at the cold snow falling on her and looked over at Jack.
"You're it." Jack said mischievously, backing slowly with a smirk before he began to run.
Rapunzel gave him a 'Oh your on!' Look and shook the snow off before grabbing her dress to not step on and running after the prince. They both laughed and screamed at one another as they threw snow at each other.
"Haha Jack, get over here!" Rapunzel laughed with joy.
"Nah I kinda like it over here." He teased
"You're going to regret it!!" She replied.
They began running again when Jack accidently tripped and fell yelling in pain.
"JACK!!" Rapunzel yelled in worry.
As Jack sat up Rapunzel had ran to his side checking him for injuries.
"Are you okay?! Are you hurt?!"
Jack winced in pain but then saw how Rapunzel was so worried about him, and he was surprised, it made him smile thinking she already cared so much about him to be this worried, maybe she even felt the same thing he was feeling for her.
His crown had fallen off so she was able to stroke the strands back of his hair that fell perfectly on his forehead. Rapunzel had never felt too scared/worried for someone who she had just met, especially a suitor but Jack wasn't just a suitor he was something more than that to her.
"I'm okay punzie" He said softly with a soft smile trying to calm her down as he put his hand on her cheek to caress it with his thumb.
She flinched at his touch but quickly relaxed, even though his hands were so cold they were comforting and warm to her. When she realized his other hand was bleeding. And gasped.
"Jack ! You're bleeding!" She exclaimed in worry.
Jack looked over at his hand without a worry in the world.
"I'm okay, don't worry. It's just a scratch" He said laughing.
Rapunzel was so confused, why wasn't he freaking out?! Jack looked at his hand and thought to himself for a minute, then stood up with Rapunzel.
"Come on," He said, taking her hand with his good hand.
They continued to walk deeper farther away from the castle. Rapunzel hadn't even noticed she was too worried about his wound.
"Rapunzel. Did your mom ever read you stories about magic?" Jack asked joyfully.
Rapunzel's suden worry turned into joy.
"Yes, mother always read them before bed time! Now I have millions of books." she said, smiling at him.
Jack laughed a little then stopped and took her hands. Rapunzel suddenly felt butterflies again as Jack looked down at her hands then back at her with a smile, his light brown hair had a orange tint to it as the sun hit it and his features were more defined now, Rapunzel suddenly felt weak to her knees, he was so handsome, every strand on hair fell perfectly on his forehead and all she could think about was being closer to him.
"I want to show you...something... close your eyes." Jack said.
"Okay" Rapunzel whispered and did as he asked.
She felt Jack let go and she felt a sudden fear.
"Jack?" She said worried but kept her eyes closed then felt someone behind her that made her jump.
But a certain voice made her quickly relax.
"I'm right here, don't worry I'm not going anywhere." Jack whispered and wrapped his arms around her pressing her against him.
His heart was racing from being so close to her he could smell her soft beautiful smell that was intoxicating yet comforting.
While Rapunzel felt so safe with him as she smiled to herself thinking how sweet he was and the bliss she felt in his arms.
"Jack...what do you want to show me?"
She heard him chuckle a bit then he replied.
"Okay open your eyes."
Rapunzel did as he asked and a gasp escaped her lips, then a big smile grew on her face at what she saw in front of her. She took it all in at once, joy, confusion, excitement and worry.
Jack had his good hand out infront of her with snowflakes glowing in his palm as they floated in place, it was magic.
Jack's face lit up with joy and relief seeing Rapunzel's face glow up, it was the best thing he had ever seen. He was scared to show her his gift but just the little time he spent with her felt like he knew her for eternity.
"Jack, what-but how?" She turned to look at him.
"I don't know, I've had it since I was very little." He said
As he made some light snowflakes fall above rapunzel.
She looked in awe as they fell, then at Jack, he smiled at first but then looked down at his hurt palm, he used the same power to heal it.
"I was worried you'd be scared of me if I showed you, that you would run away or maybe even look at me differently," Jack said.
Rapunzel became sad at what he said and got closer to him and took his now healed hand looking at the wonders he did to it. Then she looked at him who was looking down as she touched his hand then looked at her finally.
"Jack I could never. You're already incredible, this just makes you even more special." Rapunzel resumed him.
Jack's feelings grew even bigger for her than they were before.
"My parents always feared about society seeing me different so no one knows I have this but them, not even Mary."
"What do you think?" She asked him
He smiled at her and said.
"I love it. It's one of my favorite things, since I can remember I always loved to play with it and see what I can do, it makes me so happy." He said as he made a snowflake fly around Rapunzel's head then land on her nose, dissolving once it touched her nose.
Rapunzel giggled at the tickle. Then Jack continued.
"And with time It got stronger and I learned to control it and see what I really could really do." He added as he began to make it snow around them.
Rapunzel looked in shock.
"Was that...you? You made it snow earlier?" She asked.
Jack answered with a smile and rapunzel glowed up in happiness and started to twirl around as the snow sprinkled down upon them.
"That's amazing! I only thought this was real in books and-"
She looked over at Jack who was also enjoying the snow falling too and she came to realize he did this for her. But why?
Jack then realized she was staring at him and was confused.
"You okay punzie?"
"You said your parents don't want anyone to know...why did you show me?" She said feeling touched.
She began to walk towards him as he replied.
"I don't know, I just feel happy with you, like...I can be myself. I just never felt like..."
Jack said blushing then a bit nervous toward the end.
"This.."
Jack heart began to race hearing Rapunzel say that last word and got closer to her.
"Remember when I said I loved the snow." Rapunzel whispered to him both now an inch away from each other.
"Yeah"
"Now I have another reason to love it"
She said before their lips crashed into each other, their kiss was soft and gentle but with a little storm of snowflakes filled the air showing how happy Jack was. Rapunzel smiled into the kiss knowing it was Jack and once the kiss broke.
She whispered to him.
"Like I said, all my favorite memories are in the snow. "
And that filled Jack with so much happiness, the same way Rapunzel was also feeling at that moment.
