Title: Memos in Crayon

Summary: Drabble. Based on a Maryse quote in 02x14 The Fair Folk. She talks to Alec about his promotion to Head and she recalls him sitting at the desk writing his own memos in crayon.

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Maryse searched everywhere for her son. He was late for his politics lesson. He had missed his history of runes lesson earlier today and she was worried. Alec never went missing for this long. She pushed opened the door to her husband's office ready to ask if Robert had seen his son when she paused. Alec was there, sitting up on his knees in his father's chair scribbling on pieces of paper with his crayons. He was using blue crayons, as if he were using a pen – like his father would use. She watched as he didn't notice her standing there and kept on going. She had no idea if he was actually writing words or just doing scribbles. But he was very focused on what he was doing.

"Alec? What are you doing?" Maryse asked quietly, startling her son slightly.

"I'm practicing, Mommy." He told her turning back to the piece of paper in front of him.

"Practicing?" She asked, stepping closer to her son.

"I'm writing memos! I have to practice if I'm gonna be head of the Institute one day." He told her earnestly. His little face frowning at her as if he didn't understand why she had asked.

"Oh, Alec. What kind of memos does a 6-year-old have to write?" She asked.

"Come and see!" He said pointing at the pile of papers he had already written. They had all sorts of things on them.

Always have candy for the Alec and Izzy (who was only 4 at this time).

Let Alec and Izzy stay up as late as they want.

Treat Alec and Izzy like grown-ups – all the time.

"Alec…these are…" Maryse paused to find the right words her son staring up at her for approval, "very well done. And I think we can do these things. I'll have to talk to your father, but I think we can do this."

"Really, Mommy?" Alec asked, his eyes wide and she could tell all he needed was approval.

"I think so. But it's time for politics. Come on, now." She urged, Alec ran back to the desk and grabbed up his crayon again, "Alec…"

"One more, Mommy." Alec said he quickly scribbled it down and handed it to Maryse as he walked out. Always put Izzy first.
