It seemed for a while like nothing would change, Remus forgave his friends, of course he did. He apologized profusely on their behalf to Severus, who didn't want to hear a thing about them. Remus didn't blame him. His friends were off on some bender, and Remus had spotted Severus in his usual spot in the library. Remus breathed in deeply and walked over to him, he had started to notice small changes in Severus' behavior, things that made him wonder if he wasn't being pushed into something he didn't really want.

Despite Lucius and the gang making it seem like Severus was "in", Remus could tell Severus was just as much one of them as Peter was a Marauder, if Remus was being fully honest with himself.

"Um, Snape?" Remus asked, holding his books in front of his chest as both to show he meant no harm, and also, well, just in case Severus wanted to curse him.

Severus looked at him, and wordlessly moved some of the stacks of potions books aside to clear an area for Remus to take a seat.

"Thank you," Remus said softly.

The two of them studied in silence, but it seemed easy, comfortable. Remus reached for one of the Potions books Severus had been using, and his hand brushed Severus' pale hand. Remus felt a spark, but tried not to yank his hand away, making it obvious.

It went slowly at first. It started with quiet study sessions, they hardly spoke. But they sat and worked together at least once a week.

"Remus?" Severus asked one day, but when he saw Lucius walk past, he clammed up immediately.

Remus' eyes followed the blonde Slytherin until they were out of sight.

"Have you ever wanted to be more powerful? For people to take you seriously?" Severus was whispering so softly it was hard to hear him. Remus had to lean in even closer to hear Severus' words.

Remus was sure his face looked puzzled. Perhaps he had been right after all. Perhaps the allure of those who appear to respect him had gotten under his skin.

"Power comes with responsibility," Remus said quietly. "I think we should talk somewhere else, don't you?"

They met that night, in the Room of Requirement, and as soon as Severus saw the two of them were truly alone, he broke down.

"They would never have kept me if they found out," he cried. "How am I supposed to go on living like this?"

He opened his shirt, and Remus saw the mark on his chest—the scratch of a werewolf.

"I didn't know," Remus gasped, his hand reaching for the offensive mark that he knew had changed the course of Severus' life, whether he knew it or not.

"Well, I can't live like this, the Dark Lord…" he whimpered.

"You became one of them," Remus said, keeping his features blank.

Severus nodded.

"We can still get you out, I…." Remus stopped. "I mean, if you wanted."

"I've never been one of them, and if they find out about my new little affliction," Remus couldn't help but see the bitterness from Severus' eyes.

Throwing caution to the wind, Remus advanced on the scared snake, pulling him into his arms and holding him.

"Is this okay?" Remus asked, listening as Severus' cries became quieter.

"Thank you," Severus said, shocking Remus.

"Thank you?" Remus repeated in disbelief. "I ruined your life! I made you an outcast forever! You should hate me."

"But, I think I love you for it," Severus said softly.

"Sev, um, I love you too," Remus grinned, and their mouths met in a passionate battle. Turns out, Remus and Severus now had each other, and that would make the process a little more comfortable.
