Chapter 1
"Trick or treat!" chirp munks and ettes as they surround the front porch when an old elderly munk, (that's well in his late 90's,) all dressed up in a red devil costume for the occasion. He lets out a croaky laugh at the beaming faces of the young munks and ettes.
"Hi kids!" Answered the old munk to the fourth generation of grate grand kids. "Great looking costumes, everyone. I just love the vampire look, Joey. That goes for you to Jenny all dressed up as a witch that must've came from your grandma. How's it going Ralph in your monster costume? Are you being nice to your brothers, sisters and cousins at home...and at school?" said the elderly munk, giving his great grand nephew the evil eye.
"Stop interrogating Ralph, you old devil you and if I remember right...you were just like him at his age. Ralph-y...pay no attention to your great uncle! After all, he's just trying to scare you to death on a full moon."
"Well, Great Auntie," said Ralph as he took a big gulp from being so nervous of his great uncle. "He's doing a very good job of it and I think my great uncle...literally wrote the book himself on how to intimidate us chipmunks and people."
"Okay, okay Miss Pink Princess Power, I get the hint and I'll quiet," said the old munk as he took a quick look over his right shoulder to the love of his life and handed out treats to all six chipmunks that were at his door.
"Thanks Great Aunties," said Ralph shyly as he went inside for a few minutes to give one of his great aunts a hug, not realizing that the other four were there in the same house.
"But seriously, Ralph, please be a little nicer to your brothers, sisters, and cousins. And Wally...you definitely look good in that werewolf costume that you have on and you definitely are my little brother's grandson after all; with your green eyes. You look just like him at your age."
"I'd listen to him if I were you, Ralph-y and Wally...you really do look just like me when I was your age," giggled Theodore who was wearing a cute bunny costume as he walked from the bathroom.
"Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble," said Jeanette wearing her witches costume as she came into the room with her broom. "Boy, we have some trouble among us tonight...right sisters?"
"Oh absolutely, we sure do and are in big trouble ourselves as well," said Eleanor wearing her mummy costume.
"I still can't believe everyone believed us when we told everyone that we had a singing gig in another state on Halloween night," said Simon wearing a mad scientist costume as he came into the living room with everyone else..
"What?!" cried Gadget, wearing her mechanic costume, being surprised because of her grandma being there as well.
"No way," said Jenny being all surprised like her sister.
"And all six of you are here...in the same house. Because I thought...or had some...never mind. You guys are always playing tricks on all of us and you do it every year convincingly to us all. It's so not FAIR, you know...Grands," said Ashley wearing her skeleton costume that came from her great grandpa Simon with her arms being folded up and not happy being tricked by her six grands.
"Okay, okay little ones, I guess we had our little fun with our little trick and we did trick you kids very well this year. Right guys?" Spoke Alvin when he heard murmurs of agreement from everyone, including his grand kids.
"Yep," said Brittany. "That's right your grandma is here and I just love your mechanic costume Gadget.
"Yep," said Brittany. "That's right! Your grandma is here! And I just love your mechanic costume, Gadget...Oh you look so cute wearing it! That goes for the rest of you kids to and wait a minute kids. I wanna get my phone and take your guy's pictures right now."
"Thanks Gram. At least you see me as a mechanic. Everyone else sees me as a white lab rat wearing a jumpsuit." Gadget sighed. "Oh, I just knew I should have left my bush tail alone and not have it trimmed down from my counterpart...stupid bet and dear that he mad me do. At least my counterpart who bailed on me this year; to go trick or treating with another group, did the same thing and felt bad because of his bet and dare that he made me do. I'll thank Ian later and after I use permanent super glue and glue a sky-blue bow to his tail at night while he is sleeping in bed."
"While you're at it Gadget," said the all black ette with her bright blue eyes. "You should just take his glasses and clothes...and leave him with some of your dresses and make him wear eye contacts. So that way, Ian will look just like you. That's two albino's lab rats wearing sky-blue dresses and sky-blue bows while going to school on Monday morning...with a sky-blue bow that's stuck on Ian's tail for a while," said Ashley, halfway joking.
"Can you help me do that tonight with Ian and if you do, I'll help you with do up Chip. So that way chip-y will look exactly like you on Monday morning. And besides...us girls have to stick together. I can see it now...Ian and Chippy looking like girls and getting mistaken as girls...then have to use the girls bathrooms," said Gadget giggling.
"You know what, Gadget, I already love the idea of Chippy looking just like me come Monday. After all, we both are black chipmunks and it will be so much fun going shopping tomorrow at the mall...with our counterparts looking just like us. And Besides that, this will be my payback for Chippy for not wanting to go trick or treating with me this year and wanting to go with another group instead."
"Okay, albino's and blackie's," said Brittany. Which was her most common phrase to the four of them when they were together. "If you wanna do this right, girls, do it right the first time. I'd make them come with me and get all done up and groomed like an ette. That's getting nails painted, long hair put in curls with ribbon and bows, getting ears triple pierced. And maybe have them wear a locking dog collar with tags that has a girls name on them. Then if you really want to, I'd also make them try on all the dresses that you want to see at the mall and do that all day long as punishment for bailing out on a night of fun, especially for not coming to see their Grands and Grams tonight."
"Ooh! Great idea, Graham," said Gadget as her face lit up like a light bulb.
"Oh yes, what a great idea and just think of all the fun that we can have with them tomorrow as girls," said Ashley, getting excited about their grandma's idea of revenge.
"Just make sure you stop by in the morning and I'll give you some money so the four of you can play all day long. And I want lots of pictures after getting all done up and wearing dresses," said Brittney smiling at her grand-kids.
"Oh, we will," said the white one.
"For sure we will," said the black one, finishing off her sentence.
"You know, kids," said Alvin. "This night is kinda special for me, for my brothers and my sisters. So if you want and would like to hear a true story that really happened to me with the rest of us on this very night and how I..." Alvin hesitated. He wasn't sure if he should tell them that he almost died on the table that night when his appendix exploded open while going to the hospital several decades ago. "I got very sick and missed out on the best night of the year many, many decades ago. To be precise, kids...ninety-one Halloweens have passed to be exact. But I'm sure you kids want to go trick or treating instead of hearing an old story about me and the rest of us anyways."
"What?!" Cried Wally, who was wearing his werewolf costume.
"No way!" Said Jenny being all surprised like every one else.
"I gotta hear what happened and how you missed out on trick or treating. I mean...I never have seen you sick before in my life and...you are like that pink energizer bunny that never stops. It just keeps going and going, no matter what." Ralph whispered with sparks of tears in his eyes.
"Ralph's right," said Ashley. "We do wanna hear what happened, but we don't wanna miss out on Trick or treating either."
"Don't worry kids," said Alvin. "It won't be that long of a story and you all will have a good time afterwards. But I can't exactly tell the story either. So I'll let Simon and the others tell my story. The only thing I can show you is my big scar on my belly. See kids..." (site of a four inch long scar)..." As he lifts up his shirt to show them where it was at.
"Wait a minute, Grandpa, you didn't just get sick...did you? Because I believe that's the spot where the a...a-ppends..." Joey struggled as he was trying to think real hard for the right word.
"That's appendicitis," said Simon, correcting his great-nephew. "I see you've been studying science very hard Joey. And I'm very proud of you!"
"Grandpa..." Joey said, looking concerned all of a sudden.
"Oh, come here, Joey, and give me a hug. I'm not going anywhere yet and...I got the feeling that I still have a few more years left in me to live." Alvin laughed as he wrapped the skeptical munk into a tight embrace.
'Well...I have passed the age of sixty, seventy-two, eighty-six and the only number left is hundred and twenty. I wonder if Mr. Old Clemmie Clam-oh, wait, isn't it Mr. Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud- is being nice to me and the rest of us.' thought Alvin as he wondered just how many years left he had to live when his brothers and sisters all gave up one year of their lives to save their best friend and a family member. It simply just didn't feel equal.
"Grand," asked Jenny to Alvin "How did you ever manage to get the coolest and biggest house in the whole town? And what's with your dog collar with tags that you and Great Auntie wear all the time?"
"You know, kids," said Simon. "My brother and Brittany… they couldn't actually live with the rest of us, when we lived with Dave."
"Simon's right. My dog collar with tags actually saved me from being taken away from my brothers and my adopted sisters. At the time when I got fitted for my dog collar and tags… I was around four years old or so. I had to be fitted because a relative of my brothers tried…and not only did he try, he did succeed in taking me away. But did get caught a few days later because of how he took me and that he didn't have any legal guardianship over me."
Alvin continued. "And so after getting back home, my relative started the process of guardianship through court and he found a few loopholes of how to win. And so Dave was trying his best to win in court and keep all six of us in one house. But unfortunately, Dave was on the losing end and damn near did lose me and Brittany for good, if it wasn't for Mr. Talbot and his money…and having a big house also helped a lot. So when court was over, the judge ruled in favor for Mr. Talbot and for Miss Miller. The judge even told us as long as we wore our dog collar with tags, no one could take us away no matter what. But we had to go live with the person that took us home. So now I belong to Mr. Talbot and Miss Miller took Brittany as hers. Talbot even found a way to put my relative in jail for a very long long time. In fact, he died in prison."
"But don't feel bad for us either," said Brittany. "Because in a way, it actually helped us be that much closer to each other. But I must say...it was hard at first to have to live in a different house than your siblings and have your siblings live next to you. But good old Mr Talbot found a way to help us feel better. You see, kids, he put up a few zip lines going from one house to another house. So I would use the zip line and see my sisters and give them a hug before bedtime. As for Alvin... It was more like Simon and Theodore would sneak over and see him and help Alvin fall asleep first before going back to Dave. As time went by, I finally understood the real reason why I had to stay with Miss Miller. It was because she was getting older and becoming forgetful about things. So she needed more help."
"As for me," said Alvin. "While I grew older, I started to... let's just say, I needed more attention than Dave could give. And I had a slight learning disability and I needed more time spent with than my brothers and sisters. So it worked out better for me because Talbot could spend more time helping me and he helped me understand history much better in his own way. He took me to places that I could see...feel and touch. Anyways...we could always see our siblings and do stuff together all the time and it was like the three houses became one big house for us. As for Mr. Talbot's house -which is now my house- we really played in his the most because of how big it was. We did everything from playing hide and go seek to play card games."
"Wow Grand," said Ralph. "I bet you have lots of stories to tell us and could keep telling us stories about what you did."
With a slight chuckle coming from Simon, he spoke up. "Yeah, my brother could and we have all the letters that he did to prove it with lots of pictures to show everyone. So do you wanna hear about our greatest adventure of all time and how my brother missed out going 'trick or treating.'?"
"...Uh-huh, you betcha, sure do, yeah, yep, Mm-hmm..." Spoke the kids slightly independently.
'A simple yes would have worked, guys,' thought Simon. 'Now I know how Dave felt when we did that to him.' Thought Simon. "It all began in the year 1928 when we…."
