King Endymion sighed.
Usually, he and his wife wiggled out of formal engagements whenever they could. Unfortunately, it'd grown steadily more difficult to convince their subjects that they'd taken ill just before this banquet or that masquerade; after all, sickness was fairly minimal in Crystal Tokyo. As such, the royal couple had endured an achingly boring evening of small talk and rigidly enforced manners. Eventually he'd taken pity on his wife and had Venus feign some sort of urgent matter that required the queen's attention. For the last three hours he'd juggled the remaining guests alone until it'd mercifully been time for everyone to retire.
Now, as he entered his chambers, he was sorely tempted to forget all 'royal dignity' and flop straight onto the bed. His fatigue was soon forgotten though when he spotted a rather odd sight. His wife, in her full royal regalia, was standing alert by the window.
What was more baffling was that the curtains were drawn so she couldn't have been looking at anything in particular. As he edged closer though he soon saw that she was peeking through a tiny gap she'd made in the fabric
"Usako? What're you doing?"
Neo-Queen Serenity turned towards her husband, the dimmed lights of the bedroom shimmering off her crown.
"Shhh." She put a finger to her lips then waved him over.
Eyebrow raised, Endymion approached the curtain and leaned down. Peering through the gap he could just about see the courtyard far below. Despite the late hour, the courtyard glistened with light, as though it were the Tokyo of old during the festive season. The sight was beautiful to be sure, but it was nothing Endymion hadn't seen before.
"What am I supposed to be looking at?"
" Them, " whispered Serenity.
Endymion squinted slightly and soon found the source of Serenity's interest.
Two people stood alone in the deserted courtyard. At face value they seemed to be teenagers, the girl around fourteen and the boy a few years older. The young man sported elegant white robes and had soft silver locks topped with a shining golden horn. The young woman on the other hand wore a flowing white dress that by rights should've looked at odds with her stark pink hair. And yet, somehow, she looked nothing short of enchanting.
Then again, Endymion admitted, he was rather biased.
"How long have they been out there?" He asked.
"Not sure," replied Serenity.
"Well, how long have you been watching them?"
"Not long. Only for the past ten minutes or so."
"Hmmm, it's pretty late. Maybe we should send someone down to fetch her?"
"Oh, don't be such a spoil sport!" she chided, "Besides, unless I'm mistaken, they'll be saying goodbye any minute now."
"How'd you know?"
"Over the years I've learned a thing or two about body language."
"Oh really?" Endymion raised his eyebrow again.
Serenity blushed slightly. "Well… I know her body language."
Endymion smirked. "In any case, I think you're right. I know a thing or two about body language myself."
"Ah, is that due to your 'royal wisdom' or your med school training?" She teased.
Endymion let out a tiny laugh. "Nothing like that," he nodded towards the silver haired boy, "just memories of being young once upon…"
As they watched, the young man leant towards the girl who soon closed the gap between their lips.
"…a time," he finished with a sigh.
Endymion glanced towards his wife who was clearly trying very hard not to giggle with delight.
Soon enough, the youngsters parted. The silver haired boy bowed politely before making his move to leave. The young woman meanwhile remained in the courtyard and watched him as he left. After he'd disappeared from sight, she took a seat by one of the rose bushes and stared up at the night sky. Despite the distance, Endymion could clearly detect the dreamy look in her eyes.
"Aww," cooed Serenity. She continued to watch the girl for a moment before turning to her husband. "Do you remember our first kiss?" she asked, somewhat slyly.
"Which one?" He replied
Serenity's sly expression gently morphed into confusion. "What do you mean ' which one '?"
Endymion gave Serenity a small smile as he took her hands in his. "The one at the masquerade under the Moon?" He moved closer to her . "Or the one at the masquerade on the Moon?" he whispered.
He leant towards his wife, the queen soon closing the gap between them. But just before their lips met, Endymion had just enough time to observe Serenity's eyes.
To his pleasure, they bore a similarly dreamy look to their daughter's.
