Shinji woke from his sleep and whilst he awoke he couldn't help but dread the day ahead. He went to the kitchen and fashioned what he needed to make breakfast for Misato
and Asuka. Asuka came into the kitchen and sat down in the chair and she started to get impatient. Just before Asuka spat insults at Shinji, Misato came into the room and sat down half asleep. Shinji finished the food which consisted of eggs and toast, he put the plates on the table and Shinji sat down.
They began eating and Shinji asked apprehensively "how is it?", Misato answered with a groan and thumbs up while Asuka said, "who knew that an idiot like you can cook". Shinji replied with an "mhm" and then Misato sat up from her chair and went into her room for a while and came out dressed and took a sip of her beer and said "you two have synchronization tests at 10 today" but Shinji was confused and asked "which 10?" In reply, Asuka smacked him on the back of the head and said, "you big idiot, what time do you think?".
Misato sighed and said " in an hour Shinji" after all was said Misato left and it was time for Shinji and Asuka to start walking to NERV. The two pilots exited the door and started the walk which Asuka went ahead of Shinji and said "I want to stay away as much a possible from you" which Shinji sighed and replied with "ok" but as he saw her walk a few feet in front of him but something was off this time because after she said that he felt a slight pang in his chest (why does my chest feel weird) shinji said to himself but he brushed it off.
They arrived at NERV and walked in and met up with Rei. They scanned their cards and went down the elevator and stopped at the sync room. They got into the sync pods and Ritsuko counted down and it started but Shinji couldn't stop thinking (why did my chest hurt when she said that? Maybe I upset my stomach or a past injury came back up?) ritsuko spoke to Shinji "your sync ratio is low, try to calm yourself" she said. In the glass window Maya was calling out the calculations which were "Rei is 31.1%, Shinji is 42.6%, and Asuka is 49.8%!?" she exclaimed and Ritsuko looked surprised.
The pilots exited the plugs and heard the percentages and Rei simply stood there while Asuka said "HAHA I beat wondergirl AND the great Shinji, looks like I'm truly the best pilot" she said smugly, Shinji awkwardly replied with "you sure are Asuka" then Asuka replied with "I don't need your approval stupid Shinji" which in turn Shinji replied with "well I guess not" then Asuka got irritated saying "oh so now the great Shinji wants to get snippy" but just before shinji could reply Misato came in and stopped the heated argument saying " there's no need for two of you to argue, let's just head home okay?" The two of them replied with an "ok" and started the walk back home while Misato drove. The two pilots walked home but Shinji couldn't help but feel crestfallen but they entered the home and Asuka immediately went to her room while Shinji decided he better get rest as well due to having to go to school.
Shinji awoke the same as the day before and got up to make food as always but Asuka wasn't at the table which was unusual so Misato asked him to wake her. He opened her door and saw her sleeping but in the moment of silence he felt different about her, a feeling he couldn't describe for the life of him. "asuka asuka hey wake up" she got up and groaned at Shinji and rolled her eyes, they ate breakfast and headed for school. They arrived at their class and Shinji sat and looked out the window just as Rei was doing. He wondered why Rei looked out the window for so long.
Kensuke and Toji came up to shinji and they talked for a while about whatever they pleased but then Toji brought them outside and wrapped them into a huddle and said "ok guys I got a secret and you can't say nothin' alright?" which Kensuke and shinji replied with an "ok?" then Toji said, "I like Hikari and I want to tell her but how?" Kensuke and Shinji chuckled thinking that Toji was joking but Toji got red and got angry with them saying "you two can shut your mouth because at least I have a better shot than you two!"
Kensuke put a hand on his shoulder and said "you gotta be smooth, man" with a sliding hand motion while Shinji said "I wouldn't know much about that'' Toji sighed and said "thanks anyways" as he walked off which Kensuke laughed and asked Shinji "are you gonna ditch me and get a girl too?" which Shinji said "don't worry it's not like that'd happen anyway" nearby Asuka was eavesdropping and came in and said, "don't worry Kensuke it's not like Shinji could ever find love anyway". They both had a surprised look on their faces and Shinji awkwardly chuckled while Kensuke laughed but just then the bell rang. Shinji headed home by himself and thought about his current situation and he finally reached home and went to sleep.
He awoke once again and thought about how everyday seemed the same anymore but Asuka and he had to do more sync tests but on their way a but suddenly a blackout in which Rei, Shinji, and Asuka found an angel named Matarael was secreting acid down onto the Geofront which the 3 went through the vents to get to the EVA units which Misato was surprised by. They reached their units and devised a plan to kill the angel in which unit 02 would hold the acid off while unit 00 got a gun and gave it to unit 01 so he could shoot the angel.
Asuka traveled up the hole and latched onto the edge so she could hold off the acid in which rei retrieve a gun for Shinji to shoot but then the angel secreted from a different spot which hit Shinji making him slip down the hole forcing rei to shoot in which was successful with the angel exploding into a giant cross. Shinji's unit was injured so when they all came back his unit had to rest. Asuka said, "you big IDIOT you could have gotten me killed back there due to your incompetence" which made Shinji just walked away already feeling guilty Misato stopped him to lecture him on how he wasn't careful enough. Shinji just felt like a pit growing inside him but on his way out his father stopped him and they locked eyes, father and son but Gendo simply said "you caused compilations that could have had casualties, don't fail again" Shinji wanted to break down but he passed him and walked home when he arrived home he went into his room and listened to his SDAT.
He heard Asuka speaking on the phone like always but this time he eavesdropped "well we could meet tonight, I don't mind, sure!" Shinji, being confused, looked out and Asuka was dressed up and was getting ready to leave but before she could Shinji asked "who was that on the phone?" she said, "you'd like to know wouldn't you" she turned towards the door but Shinji said "where are you going?" she replied in an irritated tone "out" she groaned and went out the door.
Shinji entered the living room and asked Misato "where is she going?" Misato said "on a date with a boy from school" shinji became downcast and he went into his room and slumped onto the bed and he sat there unmoving but his eyelids eventually closed and he fell asleep. He awoke early but a bit too early to a laughing asuka and a boy's voice before it was quiet again.
He awoke again being tired, this time made breakfast but at the table, Misato said "asuka when can we meet this boyfriend of yours?" in turn asuka turned red and said "soon". Shinji felt a tinge of jealousy but said to himself he was getting irrational because Asuka can do what she pleases. They went to school and the day passed and Asuka went home early and the bell rang and Shinji took his walk home. He talked to himself (why am I getting jealous? I don't even like her so why would I care, huh weird) he shook his head but as soon as he was about to open the door he heard laughter Misato, Asuka, and a boy?! Shinji's jealousy immediately came flooding back. He swung the door open and found the boy sitting with Asuka and Misato. He sat up and asked Asuka who he was. She said he's just a "roommate" which made Shinji feel deeply hurt.
Misato patted Shinji on the shoulder and headed to bed while the boy went up to Shinji and shook his hand saying "my name is Hiroto". Shinji sat near them and asked "how long have you two been together?" which made asuka chuckle and look into hiroto's eyes "7 months" they began to kiss which made Shinji leave the room and head into the bathroom. He stood there staring at himself then he splashed cold water on his face and looked back up feeling like he couldn't recognize himself anymore, he felt like he was on the brink. He went back into the room only to find Hiroto getting a little racy with Asuka. Shinji felt something he hadn't really felt before, was it jealousy? No, it was deeper than that it was indescribable and in that moment of adrenaline-filled rage he stormed over and began to yell "YOU STUPID JERK" as he pushed Hiroto off he got up and punched Shinji in the nose and knocked him down and threw a few more punches and stopped and said, "I'm not going to waste my time on someone as worthless as you" as he stormed out the door and Asuka tried to stop him but he said "we're through" as he slammed the door Asuka began to cry yelling at Shinji "YOU RUINED MY ONLY CHANCE AT LOVE, NOW ILL ALWAYS BE ALONE" Shinji tried to explain but he only stuttered and she yelled again "YOU ARE A STUPID INCOMPETENT SPINLESS WIMP, A COWARD" she stormed into her room and slammed the door. Just then misato came out only to see shinji, she looked sympathetic and shinji brushed past her and went into his room.
He fell down to his knees shaking, crying and he began to talk to himself (i have nothing left, I'm worthless, spinless, cowardly, incompetent,) words rang in his head as he fell over he thought about what Asuka said a few days ago "don't worry Kensuke it's not like Shinji could ever find love anyway" he ran it over in his head, (love, love, love heh do I really love her?) He looked at his hands and clenched them and punched the ground. "Maybe things would be better if I just faded away," he cried. Shinji sat in his room encapsulated by the darkness, wrapped up in his sorrow as his inner demons pried him open, he fell deep into a sad slumber.
Today was a free day with no school or NERV-related business but Misato still had work. That left shinji and asuka home alone and when shinji got up asuka was already awake. He was hesitant but he sat next to Asuka and said "look I'm sorr-" but Asuka butted in "OH I'M SO SORRY, IS THAT WHAT YOU WERE GOING TO SAY" Shinji just let his head hang low and Asuka began again "YOU ARE SO SELFISH BECAUSE YOU CAN'T STAND SOMEONE BEING HAPPY" Shinji snapped "PLEASE ASUKA STAY WITH ME, YOUR ALL I HAVE LEFT!" he said with tears in his eyes, her eyes widened. Shinji started again "I know I'm pathetic to you and I'm broken and i-" Asuka stopped him and said "we can be broken together" as she began to break down as well and they held each other tightly, they both pulled away and Shinji locked eyes with Asuka peering into her blue eyes and he felt happy and comforted by her warmness and liked the smell of her hair and for once he didn't feel outcasted and alone, suddenly Asuka looked away flustered "ugh, you are still an idiot" and Shinji looked slightly disappointed at the comment but Asuka quickly corrected herself and brushed her hand across his cheek and said "but your still my idiot" and Shinji chuckled slightly.
Shinji started "do we need to hide this relationship?" Asuka replied, "most likely due to NERV, they probably don't want two of their pilots being distracted by each other". Then asuka started "since we have the place to ourselves, did you want to watch something…. together?" Shinji looked happy and he laid on his back on the couch while Asuka lay on top of him and they began to watch a movie. Shinji was extremely uncomfortable in this situation (it's comfy and nice but she's making me feel a bit uncomfortable) he thought and Asuka looked up at him "ugh, are all boys the same, stupid pervert Shinji" she turned back to watch the movie. They continued into the late hours of the night until they couldn't hold out any longer, they fell asleep together but then someone opened the front door.
"Ugh, work sucks" Misato groaned and Kaji simply chuckled and nodded as he opened the door for Misato but Misato saw the tv was still on "Did one of them leave the tv on? Ugh" Kaji watched from the doorway, and as Misato went around the arm of the couch and was not surprised to see neither of the pilots there and she sighed and turned the tv off before returning to Kaji. "I'm going to give those two a piece of my mind" which Kaji chuckled in reply but then Kaji started "it was nice… to do this again with you" as he awkwardly scratched the back of his neck. Misato got red and slightly groaned and suddenly grabbed his face and gave him a kiss before pushing him out the door and closing and with that, she let out a breath of relief and went to bed. Shinji laid there staring at the ceiling due to him being slightly disappointed because Asuka left him on the couch. He thought that maybe he offended her or was moving too fast? He fell asleep wondering why as the thoughts ran circles around him. Asuka awoke sad and guilty about last night but she had her reasons and she got out of bed to eat breakfast, needless to say, it was awkward at the table but then Misato started "why are the two of you so quiet?" Neither of them spoke, they ate and left as fast as possible. They went separate paths to school while Shinji felt a deep hurt of anxiety, Asuka felt a dark pit growing filled with bitter guilt.
