Fifteen minutes to midnight at a nightclub in Muskoka, Ontario.
Loud music pumping through the air, it was damn near impossible to hear anything that anyone was saying. Even two girls seated at the same table would have a hard time hearing each other, but when you and the other girl basically had the exact same thought process, it wasn't as difficult. Sadie Marsh and Katie Mallow, two girls that had essentially been inseparable from birth, found themselves seated at one such table together, giggling as they checked out the scene around them.
"Oh my gosh," Sadie placed her hands on her face in shock as she spotted a cute boy off in the distance, "Katie, Katie! Look at that boy, he's super duper cute!"
"Oh my gosh, you are so right!" Katie squealed excitedly along with her best friend, "Who would've known that these nightclubs could be this fun and full of cute boys?"
"Not me! Eee, I'm so happy you thought to come here, this is so much fun!"
"It is so much fun, but let's be honest, there's no way we would've gotten in if it wasn't for how pretty you look!"
"Aw, you're way prettier than me!"
"Get out, I am not!"
The two girls couldn't help but giggle, each expecting the other to insist upon their own beauty. They reached for matching martini glasses, both pink and full of a red liquid, perhaps something of a strawberry flavor, and tapped them together before taking a sip from said glasses. Sadie found it a little hard to swallow at first, but nonetheless, she did it, causing Katie to applaud her excitedly.
"You did so good for your first real drink! Some people just spit it out after having a sip, but not you! You're the toughest girl I know, Sadie!"
"Oh, please. I wouldn't even have this drink if it weren't for you, you know that. You're so strong that your strong-ness rubs off on me!"
"OMG, like, shut up! You totally did it on your own, and you know it!"
They giggled again before they took another sip of their martinis, Sadie even enjoyed the flavor a little more than before. She didn't make the face that she had made before, at least. As they sat together, they heard the doors to the club swing open, and an intense girl forced her way in. They recognized her from high school, though that was quite some time ago now. Eva Barron, the school's top athlete, well, when she was in school at least. Word had it that she spent some time doing professional deadlift competitions for a while after graduation, but an injury to the back had taken her out of commission.
"Out of my way!" the club's intruder shouted louder than the music at a crowd of people before her, shoving through them and approaching the bar, where she was met by the gaze of all the current patrons seated there. "What the hell are you idiots looking at!? Get lost!"
Her snarls scared the people away well enough, and she took one of the seats, demanding a drink from the bartender with the very same ruthlessness that she showed before. Sadie shot a glare towards the girl from her own table while Katie just stared blankly at her, a little uncertain about how to react to the sudden outburst.
"Ugh, what's her deal?" Sadie asked her friend, nudging her arm lightly to get her attention, "She was always like that in school, too. I seriously have no idea what her problem is."
"Oh, um," Katie tapped her finger against her chin for a moment, thinking about it, but eventually coming up with nothing, "I don't knew either, maybe she had a bad day?"
"A bad day every single day since ninth grade? I don't think so, I think she's just an angry girl who wants to take everything out on everyone else. A typical brute."
The last two words that left Sadie's mouth caused Katie's lips to sink into a slight frown, though she didn't let her friend see it. She hurried to take another sip of her martini, but she found it completely empty.
"Oh, no! I'm all out!"
"No way, me too!"
The girls giggled for a moment, realizing that their odd string of having the exact same thing happen to them at the exact same time continued. Suddenly, Sadie's face changed expressions from giggly to a little nervous, catching Katie's eye.
"What's a matter, Sadie?"
"I have to tinkle really, really bad!"
"Oh, okay! You can go do that, and I'll get us two more martinis, sound good?"
Sadie was confused by those words. It wasn't like Katie to want to do something else when she had to use the restroom, typically, they went together and waited for two stalls next to each other to be open and available.
"Um...okay, I guess that's fine. I'll be right back, though! Don't miss me too much!"
Katie giggled as she watched her friend rise from the table and start off into the crowd of people on the way to the restrooms. She was alone at the table now, and the night was young. She definitely could've gotten more drinks for her and her best friend, but she found herself more intrigued with something else. Her eyes landed on Eva, who was hunched over the bar, looking almost upset if you could get past the anger in her expression. She blushed a little bit as she looked at her, and soon enough, her feet started to pull her away from the table and towards the bar.
