A/N I know I am pushing it, but this one keeps coming back into my head. It is of course a sequel to A Football Escapade. Although I would suggest you read the first story, I suppose it is not mandatory.
For those who don't, the two teams for the first game were:
Pasadena
Sammy "Ghost" Jackson – Wide Receiver
Harry "Bulldog" Brown – Center
Larry "The Leopard" Warner -Wide Receiver
Stanley "The Snake" Bailey – Quarterback
Bill "The Bulldozer" Mason – Running back
Barb "Acne" Bailey - Cheerleader
Caltech
Howard "HOWAD" Wolowitz – Wide Receiver
Bert "Dog Food" Kibbler – Center
Raj (no nickname) Kootherpalli – Wide Receiver
Sheldon "Throws like a girl" Cooper – Quarterback
Leonard "Len-NERD" Hofstadter – Running back
Penny – Cheerleader
Bernadette Rostenkowski – Cheerleader
I still own nothing.
It had been a year since the football game. Penny was stunned when she learned that the guys had received a challenge for a rematch between them and the Pasadena guys. She was even more shocked when she heard they had accepted, Sheldon going on about not being able to refuse a challenge.
The request stipulated that the same seven people participate. Evidently they didn't want any ringers and they wanted to see Penny and Bernadette again.
All this was bad enough, but when Sheldon insisted on being quarterback again, Penny lost it. "Damn it, Sheldon. Didn't you learn anything? Your only pass was a complete fiasco." She smirked, "On the other hand, maybe you should, it was really funny."
Leonard and the other guys smiled, but then Leonard said, "Let's face it. He might as well, none of us can do any better."
Penny sighed as she had to agree. She loved Leonard and had recently had him move in with her, but he would look almost as bad. And even if any of them could throw, none of them could catch.
After a few moments, she said, "Since you got yourselves into this, why don't you at least try to improve. There is a high school field a few blocks away. There shouldn't be anyone there. Let's go have you practice. Who knows, maybe it will do some good."
Everyone was highly doubtful but admitted they had got themselves into this they could at least give it a shot.
Grabbing a couple footballs that Penny's father had sent her before finally admitting she was not his "Slugger" any more, they set out for the field. Howard called Bernadette and she joined them.
They had been "practicing" for about an hour and Penny was in pain from trying not to laugh. She loved them, but they were pathetic.
When one of the balls got away from them and rolled some distance away, Penny picked it up and without thinking, tossed it back down field. It was about to land by Bernadette when she moved forward and caught it.
At that moment, all the guys froze as they looked on in amazement.
When Penny noticed the staring, she said, "What?"
Leonard managed to get out, "You threw it…" Howard finished, "And Bernadette caught it."
Penny was about to say, 'So what?' when she realized what they were thinking, "Oh no. Don't even go there. I am not about to have those guys pawing me and calling it touching. Besides, they said we had to use the same team."
Sheldon spoke up, "Actually, they said the same seven individuals needed to be there."
Leonard smiled, "He's right."
Seeing where this was going, Penny turned desperately to Leonard, "Honey, you don't want those guys touching me, do you?"
She was stunned and was getting a little angry when he hesitated. Putting her hands on her hips, "Well?"
"No, of course I don't; but I also know you will let them know if they go too far." He looked at her, "Couldn't you at least try it? You can stop any time."
She was about to continue to argue when Bernadette stepped in, "I don't want them touching me anymore that you do, Penny. But… I would just love to see the look on those guys faces when we show them what girls can do."
Penny was stunned but then thought about what she was saying. "I still think you are all crazy, but I am willing to give it a shot. I still think they will not allow it."
Sheldon spoke up, "If they complain, we will just call them cowards and leave."
Raj broke in, smiling broadly, "If Penny and Bernadette are going to play, I claim dibs on being a cheerleader."
Penny smiled, "Okay, Raj, you…" She looked around, "And Sheldon can be cheerleaders."
Before he could say anything, "Remember, Sheldon, how you rooted us on to victory last time."
Sheldon, who was about to object, pondered what she said. It was his leadership and advice that had proved to be the difference.
"Ghost" returned to the practice huddle after catching a pass from "The Snake."
"Okay, Guys, listen up. They will be arriving any minute. You know what we need to do. I know those girls are gorgeous but we cannot be embarrassed again. So keep it in your pants when you are playing."
"We know the only guy that can hurt us is that little Leonard runt. Let's get after him from the start. "Sloth" will probably still be looking at the cheerleaders so we don't need to be gentle."
"We not only need to beat these bums but humiliate them." He looked around, "Do we all agree?"
Receiving vigorous support, he smiled in satisfaction.
Just then Barb came up to him, "I just saw their Van turn off thirteenth."
"Thanks, Barb." He smiled at her; she was actually a cute girl now that she had finally got rid of her acne.
When he saw them alight from the Van, he was surprised and in a way disappointed when the girls were wearing sweatshirts and jeans. He wondered what they were up to. Well, whatever it was, they were ready. They had spent the previous day looking at Playboy magazines.
"Ghost" made his way over to them, "Hi guys, ready to get going?"
Sheldon spoke up, "We're ready. I hope you all are ready to be touched like you have never been touched before."
Everyone on both teams stared at him but he just nodded in satisfaction.
Penny and Bernadette had warmed up back at the apartment, so it was only when they had flipped a coin and the teams took the field that it was revealed Penny and Bernadette were planning to play.
"Ghost" rushed forward, "Stop, Stop." Reaching the other team with his team right behind him, he got out, "What the Hell is this?"
Leonard stepped forward, "What? This is our team."
"The Snake" pointed at Penny and Bernadette, "They can't play."
Sheldon stepped forward, "I remember nothing in our communications that would preclude them from participating."
"Ghost" stammered and then finally got out, "But they're girls."
Leonard smiled, "Very good. Yes, they are." He went on, "So, are we ready to go or do you forfeit?"
"Ghost" led his team away from the others. "What do you guys think?"
"The Leopard" spoke up, "I say we let them play." When the others stared at him, he smirked, "This is a touch football game, right. So, let's do some 'touching'."
The others considered that. Finally, "Ghost" said, "Okay. Besides, how much of an effect can they have? I know she can't be worst than that Sheldon idiot, but after we bump them around a bit, they will likely quit."
After telling Caltech their decision, Caltech took the ball at the goal line. On the first play, "The Leopard" reached out to grab Bernadette as she left the line, but she ducked under his arms and sped down the field. Before anyone could reach Penny, she tossed a perfect spiral and Bernadette caught it and went in to score.
"The Bulldog" charged up to Penny and reached out for her, but she sidestepped and stuck out her foot. He stumbled over it and landed on the cement. Leonard and the others crowded around Penny before anyone else could reach her. "Sloth" finally blew his whistle and the Pasadena team was left stunned at what had happened.
Recovering from the shock, they settled down to play football. When they did go too far with the touching, Penny and Bernadette quickly put a stop to that by Penny kicking one of them in the balls while Bernadette accomplished the same with a punch.
On defense, Penny quickly realized "Ghost" was their really only big threat and she and Leonard took it on themselves to defend him.
Penny ended up throwing three touchdown passes to Bernadette and Leonard scored one on the ground. Leonard also spent most of his time protecting Penny.
Ironically, the game came down to the same situation as the year before. With the score 24-24, Caltech had the ball at midfield. During the game, Howard had injured his pinky and Sheldon had been forced to play when Raj refused to quit cheerleading. It was also true he and Barb were spending a lot of time together.
The other team had quickly ignored Sheldon realizing he was no threat.
When Penny got the last snap, she looked around but everyone was covered. She thought of running but two of their players were coming at her. Just then, she saw Sheldon had wandered past the goal line. Knowing the situation was hopeless, she decided, 'What the Hell.'
Calling out, "Sheldon!" she launched the ball in his direction.
As they drove back to the apartment, bearing another tiny trophy, Penny and Bernadette were feeling the effects of having been touched by the other team on too many occasions. Penny was looking forward to a shower and thought she would ask Leonard to give her one of his full body massages. She squirmed a little in her seat thinking about it.
The next day, everyone met in 4A to celebrate. With everyone fortified with a drink, Leonard raised his glass, "To Sheldon Cooper, the hero of the day."
As everyone raised their glasses and took a drink, Sheldon accepted their accolades with rare humility.
Penny smiled, "It's too bad more people will never get to see it. It was a catch for all time."
Howard smiled broadly, "Actually, anyone can see it on You Tube."
When they all stared at him, he went on, "Someone managed to record it."
Leonard spoke up, "Who would do that?"
Howard smirked, "That would be me."
With everyone but Sheldon urging him on, he brought it up the video. Everyone but Sheldon, who stared in horror, marveled again.
Sheldon heard Penny shout. As he turned, he saw the football in the air heading his way. In a panic, he froze where he was. As fortune would have it, it came down and hit him on the top of his head, bouncing up in the air. Startled and stunned, he fell on his butt, his feet rising as his hands helped break his fall. The ball caromed off one of his feet and went back up in the air. It finally came down, hitting Sheldon in a particularly vulnerable spot. Giving a small scream, he instinctively grabbed at the offended area, coincidentally trapping the ball.
