AN: This is my very first Star Trek FanFiction; this is my version of Season 5 ep6 of Deep Space Nine. I love Star Trek and it's got me through some tough times. It will be from Dax's PoV. To all my fellow Trek fans, I hope you like this.

Ch1 - The Mission

We had been tasked with retrieving an orb from Cardassia Prime, Captain Sisko, Dr Bashir, Chief O'Brien, Worf, Odo and I; we boarded the Defiant.

We left the station, and we headed to our destination; everything had gone according to plan, we arrived at Cardassia Prime right on time. We then retrieved the Orb from them, we weren't completely sure which orb we had collected.

The details were sketchy to say the least. We knew, as starfleet officers; we had a duty to complete missions, and we also had deal with various species.

The Cardassians aren't exactly known for being hospitable.

Once we had the orb in our custody, Captain Sisko thought it would be best if security placed the orb in unused crew quarters on board.

The reason for this was so we could safely return it to be authenticated on Bajor. Before we left Cardassia Prime we were joined by another passenger.

Commander Worf brought the new passenger to the Defiant's mess hall who, while unusual; he seemed to change upon seeing Chief O'Brien and Dr Bashir.

Worf introduced the man as Barry Waddle, a Human merchant who had been trapped on Cardassia when the Klingons attacked.

His appearance while elderly, didn't surprise me; as he had been on Cardassia Prime for years.

I thought he was harmless. Waddle explained to us that he deals in gemstones, mostly kevas and trillium.

However I was quite stunned when he ordered a raktajino from the replicator. It's a Klingon coffee, humans don't drink it; it's an acquired taste.

I tried not to show my concern. It was rather strange to see someone other than a Klingon drinking it.

He then had to explain to the chief and Dr Bashir about how Cardassians drink hot fish juice in the morning and that after being on Cardassia for a time; he was hoping for a Klingon invasion, as they know how to make a good cup of coffee, even if they are foul-smelling barbarians.

He must have forgotten that Worf was right there, he then apologised to him, Chief O'Brien and Julian decided it would be good to tease Worf about his aroma.

I could hear the humour in their tones, as they told him he has a rather earthy, peaty aroma with a touch of lilac. You know Klingons, they do not like to be made fun of.

It's not in their nature. I hope that the journey back to the station would be quick and then we could hand over the Orb and not have to worry about it again.
