Floating in this Sea

Chapter 1

Gray clouds rolled across the sky as the lone alpha pressed forward against the harsh wind. He picked the wrong time to go check on the outskirts of the city. The weather had taken a turn for the worst over the past few hours. It was also bad luck that he happened to run into a rabid bear demon who got a clear swipe at his arm, nearing cutting it completely off.

Obviously, the bear demon died with just one cut of his sword, swiftly bringing it down upon the demon's head, slicing it completely clean from his body.

'Damn bear….' The alpha thought to himself as he sheathed his sword.

Now the proud alpha yôkai of the western lands Sesshômaru stood trying to see where best to take shelter for the night. He had wrapped his arm but knew it would take a few hours for his arm to heal. With the way the clouds were looking, Sesshômaru knew it was only a matter of a short time before it would start snowing.

With his demon eyes, he was able to see off in the distance what appeared to be the remains of a former skyscraper. The top half of the building was completely exposed. How it managed not to be completely obliterated was beyond Sesshômaru's comprehension.

"Hm," A small smirk formed on Sesshômaru's face.

A skyscraper….

Sesshômaru remembered how the cities used to be filled with them, they were everywhere. Tokyo Tower was once the shining beacon of Tokyo…..

Now it was nothing but pieces along with all the other skyscrapers.

The…..humans had seen to that.

The once lush, beautiful Tokyo was now no more.

All that remained was ash and ruble.

A strong gust of wind whipped the alpha's hair forward, moko-moko wrapping tighter around himself to fight off the cold. He pulled his long fur coat tighter around his body. Deciding that he would save his energy for healing his arm, he placed one foot in front of the other setting off to the deserted building.

After walking for almost two hours, Sesshômaru finally came to the old building. Walking around to where he was able to look in, he could see straight down into the old remains. It looked like the old building went several stories below street level. With nowhere else to go and the storm mere minutes away, the inuyôkai alpha jumped down, careful not to fall on anything that appeared to be weak or old.

Once on the secured ground, Sesshômaru took in the environment around him. The skyscraper was falling apart in some areas, there were wires hanging loose far off the corners of the remains. Overall, the old building would be sufficient for one evening while he waited out the storm.

Deciding to take a deeper look, the alpha started off to his right. Walking further ahead there was a large hole in the floor. He was just about to peer further down into the large crater when his eye caught sight of something unusual off to the corner. Taking small silent steps, he reached the object of his destination.

Squatting down, the alpha inspected a hanging rope. It was tied and knotted to a large cement pillar. The rope wasn't old but wasn't new either. Someone placed this here for climbing. With his curiosity now peaked, Sesshômaru followed the rope back to the large crater.

'There couldn't be someone living here…..' The alpha thought to himself.

The city was completely abandoned, nothing grew here. Signs of life were completely scarce.

Staring down into the large crater, Sesshômaru knew he needed to see if there was actually somebody living here. Silently Sesshômaru leaped down a hundred feet, landing on a slab of broken tile floor. The floor had given way, most likely when the upper part of the skyscraper collapsed in on itself. Sesshômaru had about 10 feet of room to make himself comfortable while waiting to see if anyone appeared.

Sniffing, Sesshômaru couldn't pick anything up. The air was still sick from the ash and chemicals that fell over 100 years ago. The alpha remembered his mother telling him that strong smells of poison would linger for a long time before they would finally clear up.

So Sesshômaru waited.

Looking up towards the night sky, Sesshômaru realized how much time has passed by. He was just about to sit down when he heard a noise. Crouching down, the alpha looked down to see a figure emerge from the shadows. They had a torch in one hand and a large bag in the other. They were completely covered in fur; it was impossible to see who or what it was.

Sesshômaru continued to watch as the figure moved about laying down their large bag and then lighting a bundle of tinder before throwing the tinder into a large metal crate. The lower level soon lit up in a glowing orange firelight. From where he was sitting, he could hear the fire crackling.

The alpha's attention soon turned back to the hooded figure waiting to see what would happen next.

He watched in rapt attention as they started to uncover themselves, revealing a head of dark brown curls with large feminine chocolate eyes.

"Impossible…" Sesshômaru gasped.

A human.

A human woman.

Sesshômaru continued to stare in disbelief as the woman started pulling objects from her large bag.

'How…..all the humans died…..how can this be?' Sesshômaru thought to himself as the air grew silent around him. The alpha sat in stunned silence as he watched the human bustle about completely oblivious to the fact that she now had a visitor.
