Adrien looked out at the rain blanketing Paris that afternoon. School had ended for the day and most of the students had gone home already. The only reason Adrien was still there was because his driver had suddenly come down with a fever and couldn't drive adrien back to the mansion, and he had forgotten to bring an umbrella that day. Adrien didn't mind walking in the rain. In fact, he enjoyed feeling the cold droplets falling on his face. But his Father didn't like it as much when Adrien got wet. Adrien's phone buzzed in his pocket.
Natalie: No other drivers are available. Please walk home today.
Adrien glanced up, the only other person still here was Marinette. He didn't know much about Marinette, she seemed nice, but he hadn't gotten the chance to talk with her very much. She was looking in her pink and white polka-dot bag for something, and talking in a hushed voice. Huh, it's pretty cute when she talks to herself.
Marinette stepped over to Adrien, pink blush dusted her cheeks. "Umm…" She started, "Er, I mean. I-Is your driver late?" She sounded nervous.
Adrien gave a friendly smile, "The Gorilla is out sick today, Natalie didn't have time to find someone to drive me back. I'd walk home in the rain, but my father won't like it if I come back soaked." The two stood underneath an awning at the front doors of the highschool, just out of reach from the downpour.
"Well, umm. I have an umbrella if you'd like it." Marinette said. She reached into her bag and pulled out a pocket sized Ladybug umbrella and opened it over their heads. She offered it to Adrien, who pushed it back towards her.
"No, wait. If I take it, you'll get soaked on your way home. I can't take it." Adrien said. He thought for a moment. "Why don't we walk together so we're both dry?"
The pink on Marinette's cheeks deepened as she stared at the ground for a few moments. "O-okay! I'd like that. Let's go!" She opened the red and black umbrella and the two set off into the rain towards Adrien's house.
About halfway there, Adrien thought he heard a meowing sound from behind them.
"Wait, Marinette did you hear that?" they both stopped,
"What? I don't think I heard anyth-" She was cut off by another meow.
"Ok, I definitely heard something that time." Adrien said as he turned around, behind him on the pavement was a sopping wet black kitten. "Oh… Oh my goodness."
Marinette turned as well and saw the tiny cat, she crouched down. Forgetting that she was holding the umbrella, she accidentally hit Adrien on the head. "Oh! I'm so sorry Adrien, I just… I-" she was cut off by a lighthearted laugh.
"It's alright, Marinette. I'm fine. Not so sure about this little guy, though." He tried to pet the cat, but it hissed and swiped at him, scratching the tip of one of Adrien's fingers. He pulled his hand away, "You're a feisty one, aren't you?" he asked.
"I wonder if it lives around here somewhere?" Marinette said, she reached out her hand just out of the cat's reach. It cautiously stepped closer and nuzzled her hand. She checked for a collar of some kind but there wasn't anything around the cat's neck. "It doesn't look like you have a home, I'd hate to leave you out here." She carefully picked up the cat, handing the umbrella to Adrien in the process, she turned to him. "There's no way I'm letting it stay out here, is there any chance your dad might let you take it?" Marinette asked.
Adrien sighed, "Sorry to disappoint, Marinette. But my father would never agree to something like that. Could you take it in for now?" He asked.
"Maybe," Marinette said. "I'd have to let my parents know. I can call them on the way to your house, we should keep going."
Adrien agreed and they continued to his house, Marinette called her parents and got the go ahead from them. When Adrien heard this, he smiled so brightly that Marinette thought she was dreaming
When they got to Adrien's house, Natalie let the both of them inside, then walked up to Marinette. "Thank you for accompanying Adrien back home." Natalie leaned in closer, "between you and me, he very much enjoys having you as a friend. Thank you again, but personally from me." Marinette's cheeks flushed a little.
"Um.. you're welcome! I like being around him too." she blushed even more. At that point, Adrien walked up to them,
"I'm sorry you couldn't stay longer, but I'm guessing you should get home." He said "Do you want a towel or something for the cat?" The black kitten had fallen asleep in Marinette's arms, but was still wet and shivering.
Marinette smiled gratefully, "That's a great idea, thank you!" she said. A few moments later, the kitten was bundled in a fluffy white and grey towel and Marinette had adjusted the ketten in her arms well enough to be able to hold her umbrella. She said thank you's and goodbye's to Adrien and Natalie then set off down the road to her family's bakery.
Marinette walked in through the side entrance and up into her bedroom to get the kitten situated in the new environment. Piling pillows and blankets to make a bed, and grabbing food and water. She started absentmindedly talking to the kitten as she got everything set up. "I hope you like all of this, it's going to be awesome once I'm finished!" The cat settled into the mass of blankets and Marinette sat at her desk to finish some homework.
By the time Marinette was in her pajamas, the black cat had decided that Marinette's pillow was more comfortable than the impromptu cat bed. She shrugged and climbed into her bed, being careful so as to not wake the kitten. As Marinette settled in her bed, the cat started to purr, she patted its head. "I promise I'll take good care of you, chaton." she whispered, quickly falling asleep.
