He doesn't really like going outside nor hanging out with people but there were exceptions. Normally, on a sunny day like this, you wouldn't see Sasuke Uchiha strolling at the park, carrying a bag of sandwiches and two cups of coffee. That would be the case on normal days but today was his girlfriend's day off.
Sasuke watched as Sakura walked in front of him, looking for a spot for them to sit. Her pink hair shined brightly underneath the afternoon sun. He'd hold her hand if he wasn't holding anything right now. He'd probably kiss her right here and right now. Besides he was planning on doing something later that would forward their relationship.
They have been in a relationship for the last 2 years and Sasuke believed it was the right time to propose. He would've proposed last year but Sakura was busy with her last year of residency, so Sasuke decided to move the proposal. He was planning on inviting her for some travel together, he already has the tickets and the hotels booked, all accommodating Sakura's schedule. Then, when they reached the end of their travels, he'll propose. The ring has been in Sasuke's pocket for a year now and it was itching to reveal itself.
"There's a good spot," Sakura said and grabbed Sasuke's arm to pull him.
It was a bench under a tree, so they would be shielded from the sun. It was a plus for Sasuke that it was in a secluded part of the park. He gently placed the bag and coffees between them. Sakura was busy taking pictures of the surroundings and of Sasuke. He would occasionally smile or throw a lame peace sign to which made Sakura giggle.
For Sasuke, Sakura's laugh was the most amazing thing he had ever heard. It would make him feel light and comfortable. A happy Sakura made a happy Sasuke. Some would say it was alarming that Sasuke was depending on his happiness on Sakura but screw them. They didn't know them. They don't know how Sakura saved Sasuke. For Sasuke, he owed his life to Sakura.
"Thinking of something?" Sakura asked while munching on her sandwich. Sasuke smiled and shook his head before sipping on his coffee. Sakura finished her sandwich and spritzed her hand with some alcohol. Sasuke was about to finish his own sandwich when his eyes started to stung. Sasuke closed his eyes to relieve the stinging. He'd forgotten to put some eye drops on his eyes earlier.
When Sasuke opened his eyes, Sakura was in front of him holding his drops. She'd always bring a spare of his drops every time.
"Head's Up" she softly told Sasuke so she could apply some eye drops. Sasuke obliged and Sakura went on and placed a few drops on his eyes.
"Thanks," Sasuke told Sakura. She handed him her sunglasses so Sasuke's eyes wouldn't be strained. Sasuke smiled and wore the sunglasses.
"You always come prepared" he commented as he continued finishing his sandwich.
"I am a doctor, I'm always prepared for things like this" Sakura said as she sat back down and turned to look at Sasuke, "Besides, you're my favorite patient so I have to make sure you are well cared" Sakura added.
Sasuke finished his sandwich and coffee and placed them besides. He scooted closer to Sakura and gently kissed her forehead. Sakura smiled and leaned her head on Sasuke's shoulder as they silently watched the park in front of them.
"I had a patient yesterday who tried to hit on me" Sakura suddenly spoke. Sasuke looked down at her head and noticed she was closing her eyes. Sasuke just tightened his hold on Sakura on which made her laugh.
"But he stopped once I answered your call" she continued. Sasuke scoffed and shook his head.
"So that's why you suddenly called me "Babe" despite being on your shift" Sasuke laughed as he remembered the phone call earlier. The two of them only called each other endearments when they were alone or when they were with each other. Sasuke knew she was still on duty when he called yesterday so he was caught off guard when she called him that.
"Shizune heard it and teased me afterward that and started teasing me when we'd hit it off," Sakura said, still closing her eyes and leaning on Sasuke.
Sasuke bit the inside of his cheek and just leaned his head on Sakura's head. He was debating whether to do it now or go with his plan. The ring on his pocket suddenly became heavier. He could do it now and they could travel around as an engaged couple and probably get married along the way.
No, Sakura doesn't deserve a shotgun proposal. She deserves a well-planned proposal. Sasuke would wait until their travel before asking her the big question.
"Tell her, we'll hit it off when she's not around" Sasuke joked. Sakura raised her head and playfully punched Sasuke's arm. He just looked shrug his shoulders and leaned his head on the bench.
"Sakura" Sasuke called. Sakura just hummed in response since she was strolling on her phone.
"Let's go and travel on your vacation," Sasuke said now looking at her. Sakura put her phone back in her bag and stared back at him. It always amazed Sasuke how much her green eyes shined like they were crystals. Her eyes made him feel warm and sometimes he was afraid of it since he feels like she could see through him.
"Where are we traveling then?" she asked.
"Anywhere, and don't worry I got the tickets already," Sasuke said as he stood up and offered his hand to Sakura.
"Well, if you have the tickets then it should be fair that I go" Sakura answered as she took Sasuke's hand. She stood up and tip-toed to peck Sasuke's lips. Sasuke's free hand cupped her face and kissed her.
"I love you" Sasuke whispered, it was loud enough for Sakura to hear. Sakura's ears were getting flushed, and she smiled.
"I know, and I love you too" Sakura responded before they headed out the park holding hands.
"Can we head to my apartment? I have to get some things" Sasuke asked Sakura. He was going to sleepover at Sakura's apartment for tonight and Sasuke needed to leave the ring behind, or she'll see it.
"Sure" Sakura replied. They were about to cross the road and the sign was telling them it was ok to cross.
Sakura's hand left Sasuke's and jogged a little to cross the road. Sasuke couldn't explain it but something inside him told him to run after her. His legs felt like they were frozen still on the pavement.
It was a big road
But they've crossed this road plenty of times
Then why…
Then Sasuke saw a speeding car heading towards Sakura.
"SAKURA!"
Everything went slow-mo, Sasuke's legs broke free from the pavement, and he was running towards Sakura. Everything was still except for the moving car that was now coming dangerously near Sakura. Sasuke's hand extended to her, trying to grab her away from the incoming car. The car was now inches away from Sakura and Sasuke could see the fear on her face.
And all of the sudden, Sasuke's consciousness went black-
There were beeping sounds… and there was that smell that was familiar to Sasuke. The smell of disinfectant and alcohol invaded Sasuke's nose, and his eyes slowly adjusted to the room. Sasuke's vision was blurry, but he could make out the silhouette of his brother sitting on his side.
"Sasuke" Itachi called out to him and held his hand. Sasuke was still feeling dizzy. He tried remembering what happened and what caused him to be in the hospital.
Park… Car… Sakura…
Sakura!
"Sakura?" he weakly asked his brother, but nurses and doctors came in and immediately checked his vitals. Sasuke couldn't keep his consciousness for long and he was once again dragged in the cold darkness.
Sasuke woke up feeling better, he looked around and saw Sakura on his bedside looking at him.
"Sakura" he called out. He was met with her smile and Sasuke noticed she was still wearing the clothes she had earlier.
"You're not hurt, thank God," Sasuke said as Sakura held his hand. A few seconds later, Sakura started sobbing.
"It's my fault, you wouldn't be here if I didn't run away," she said in between sobs. Sasuke wiped away her tears with his other hand.
"Shh, it wasn't your fault" Sasuke comforted her, "What's important is that you're not hurt," he said as he caressed her head. Sakura nodded sadly and kept holding his hand.
"Don't worry Sakura, we'll find that bastard and make him pay" Sasuke promised. Sakura kissed his hand and his forehead. Sasuke suddenly felt sleepy again. He still wasn't that well but at least he was sure Sakura was fine now.
"I'm getting a bit tired," Sasuke said as he could feel the darkness swallowing his consciousness.
"Don't worry, I'll stay here till you're fine" Sakura said. Sasuke hummed in response as the darkness slowly swallowed his consciousness. Before he could finally sleep he heard Sakura silently whisper, "I love you".
Sasuke's eyes fluttered open, and he noticed that Itachi was there together with Naruto. He groaned as he tried to move. Itachi instantly came over to help him sit up. Naruto also helped to adjust his pillow.
"I'm glad you're fine" Naruto spoke first. Sasuke whispered a small thanks at him then he noticed his eyes were red and puffy.
"Were you crying?" Sasuke asked his best friend. Naruto bit his lip, something he would do to stop himself from crying.
"Cut Naruto some slack Sasuke" Itachi said. Naruto just looked away to calm himself before looking back at Sasuke.
"I was sad that you won't be able to pay back what you owe me" Naruto joked. Sasuke scoffed before responding, "As far as I know, you're the one who owes me something"
"Itachi, did you get the bastard?" Sasuke asked his brother. He wanted to see that bastard rot in jail. It almost got Sakura harmed and Sasuke wouldn't let it.
"The investigation is still ongoing but we've already found the man," Itachi told his brother. It progressed, Sasuke was relieved a bit when the man was found, if he weren't he'd get out of his hospital bed and find the bastard himself.
"Don't worry Sasuke, my dad's taking the case. We won't let the bastard getaway!" Naruto spoke. Minato was a great lawyer, Sasuke was sure they'd win it and place him in jail for a long time.
"Thanks," Sasuke said, "By the way, have you seen Sakura? She was here last night" Sasuke continued. Before anyone could answer, the door to his room opened and came inside was his mom, dad, and Minato.
Sasuke was met with his mother's hug that he returned. Minato and his father were talking about court meetings.
"Thank God, you're alright Sasuke. God forbid anything bad that happens to you" Sasuke's mom said as she cupped his face.
"I'm fine mom, don't worry about me" Sasuke assured his mother. When his mother let go of him. Sasuke focused his attention on Minato.
"It's nice to see you're fine Sasuke although I would prefer meeting you in different circumstances" Minato greeted him. Sasuke just nodded and went straight to the point.
"So, what's the update about the case?" Sasuke asked.
"Well, we've got him, but his attorney pleads he isn't guilty so we're settling this on-court" Minato explained. Sasuke was furious, what's not guilty about overspeeding and almost killing someone.
"Not guilty?! That fucker almost killed Sakura!" Sasuke roared. His breaths started to become labored and his heart was beating fast. There was silence in the room, and no one dared to utter a sound.
"Sasuke, calm down. We'll get that man behind bars as soon as possible. I promise" Minato promised Sasuke. Sasuke calmed down and leaned on his bed. Sasuke kept in mind that at least Sakura was fine then everything will be ok.
"When will the trial start?" Sasuke asked.
"Tomorrow afternoon" Minato answered.
"I want to go," Sasuke said.
"No, you can't" Fugaku interrupted. Sasuke glared at his father and tried to calm himself before saying something bad.
"Look at your condition" Fugaku pointed out, "Do you think you can attend a court trial looking like that?" he continued.
Sasuke gripped his bedsheets and breathed slowly.
"At least wait until your discharge, I'll even send you a driver to drive you to court as soon as the hospital permits you to leave" Fugaku added. Then Fugaku walked out of the door, in which Minato followed suit.
"Sasuke, do you want anything?" his mother asked. Sasuke gulped down whatever he was about to say to his father earlier and shook his head.
"Just leave me, for now, please, I want to rest" Sasuke requested and adjusted his pillow. Their mother was about to protest but Itachi held her shoulder. He was about to adjust Sasuke's bed, but Sasuke didn't want to get any help. He adjusted his own and laid down.
The last thing Sasuke heard was the door closing.
Sasuke woke up with some shuffling. He opened his eyes and saw Sakura arranging his in his room. He smiled and tried to sit up. Sakura noticed it and helped him. She took his pillow and positioned it on his back.
"I didn't see you earlier," Sasuke said as Sakura sat on his bed. Sakura just smiled and took his hand and caressed it.
"Mom and Dad went to see me" she answered, "They wanted to see you too but you were sleeping and they didn't want to disturb" she added.
There was silence but it was comfortable. As long as Sakura was there everything would be fine.
"I heard what happened earlier" Sakura suddenly said. Sasuke cast down his head and avoided Sakura's eyes. She always told him that he should let his family help him and not just keep them out of his life.
"Sasuke-" before Sakura could say what she wanted to say Sasuke interrupted her.
"Sakura, I know what you're about to say and I get it, but I don't really need them. As long as you're here then I'll be fine" Sasuke said and tightened his grip on her. Sakura just smiled sadly gripped back his hands.
"When this whole ordeal is over, promise me you'll move on from this, ok?" Sakura said to Sasuke. He immediately raised his head and looked at her. Sakura's eyes were serious. Sasuke nodded and said, "I promise"
"You better be," Sakura said before kissing his hand. Sasuke pulled her closer to him and kissed her forehead.
Sakura just smiled at him and laid down beside him. Sasuke's arms wrapped around her. He kissed her head and took in her scent. True to her name, Sakura smelled of cherry blossoms and it always made Sasuke calm. He was slowly falling asleep, but he managed to say to her,
"I love you" then sleep took over Sasuke.
Sasuke woke up the next day and Sakura was no longer by his side. Naruto came in to accompany him today since it was the first day of trial. He wanted to watch some news or ask anyone what was currently happening.
"You shouldn't be stressing yourself too much Sasuke" Naruto reprimanded him. Sasuke became frustrated, he was being treated like a kid and he hated it.
"Naruto, I am not some child that needs to be told what to do. So, give me my phone or at least turn on the television" Sasuke demanded. Naruto didn't budge and stayed seated.
"Naruto, I swear, don't make ma come there and beat you up" Sasuke threatened. Naruto just stood up and went to the door and before going out he said,
"You want to be discharged as soon as possible right? Then keep your ass down there and focus on getting yourself fixed" Naruto said before slamming the door. Sasuke took the vase on his bedside and threw it away.
A few minutes passed and Shizune came in. She saw the broken vase and glared at Sasuke. He didn't care he was just there reading some book. At least Naruto had the decency to leave him some books to read. Shizune silently cleaned the mess Sasuke made. After cleaning it up she checked Sasuke's vitals and giving him his medicine before heading out.
"Shizune, do you know where Sakura is?" Sasuke asked. Shizune stopped on her tracks and without turning she answered, "She's handling some things, you don't need to worry about it"
"You know, I was about to propose to her but I didn't because I had a plan on how to do it" Sasuke blurted out, and without a word, Shizune went out of Sasuke's room.
"Where are you. Sakura?" Sasuke asked and a lone tear escaped from his eye before sleep took over him again.
Sasuke woke up and saw Itachi was in his room, reading one of the books Naruto bought for him. He slowly sat up and Itachi went to help him. He was about to stop Itachi but he remembered what Sakura said to him, so he let him.
"How was the trial?" Sasuke asked as soon as he was sitting comfortably. Itachi sat on a chair that was beside his bed and propped the book on the bedside table.
"Looking favorable on our side but still ongoing," Itachi said and handed Sasuke a glass of water. Sasuke accepted it and sipped from the glass.
"What are they doing? It's obvious that he's guilty why aren't they giving the verdict" Sasuke said and handed the glass back to Itachi.
"They're pulling everything to keep the man out of jail but don't worry Minato's got it covered" Itachi assured Sasuke.
"I've talked to the hospital; you can be discharged the day after tomorrow" Itachi added. Sasuke looked at Itachi and contemplated.
"I know you want to be out by tomorrow but at least rest for one day before going out, you'll need it" Itachi convinced Sasuke.
There were a few moments of silence before Sasuke decided to break it.
"Thank you… nii-chan" Sasuke whispered and Itachi just smiled and poked him in his forehead.
"Anything for you little brother"
Sasuke slept through the night and woke up the next morning. Sasuke then realized he didn't see Sakura. He tried to rationalize with himself and reasoned maybe she was still resting, and she'll visit as soon as he can call her. The problem was he didn't have his phone and that he had no idea where they placed it.
Sasuke noticed a telephone on the side table beside the sofa. He slowly worked his way down his bed and towards the phone. He dialed Sakura's number with memorized movements and placed the phone on his ear.
To no avail, Sakura's phone number can't be reached. He tried calling her house, but no one answered. Sasuke went back to his head and started thinking. Where could Sakura be? Then his head started to hurt. He was remembering the day of the accident, there were flashes of memory that Sasuke saw but his head felt like it was about to crack open. He managed to push the call button. He wanted to slam his head and make himself go unconscious to get rid of the pain. A few moments passed and Shizune frantically came in. As soon as she saw Sasuke she helped him lay back on his bed and injected some pain reliever on him.
The pain slowly faded away and Sasuke could swear he saw Sakura standing beside him.
"Sakura, you're here… " Sasuke managed to say before he got unconscious.
As soon as Sasuke woke up, Sakura was no longer there. He asked Shizune but she only said that Sakura left as soon as Sasuke fell back asleep. Sasuke wasn't satisfied with the answer, but he let it be. As soon as he was out of here he'll find Sakura and just propose to her. He almost lost her… and he won't let that happen again.
The rest of the day was spent reading books Naruto bought him. Naruto came in in the afternoon and accompanied him.
"Naruto" Sasuke called out to him. Naruto looked up from his phone and looked at Sasuke.
"I'm planning on proposing to Sakura," Sasuke said in a serious voice.
"I know" Naruto answered. Sasuke looked at him confused. Naruto just laughed at him.
"I know you're planning on proposing to Sakura ever since last year, idiot," Naruto said. Sasuke was now thinking how the hell did Naruto know; he was sure he never told anyone about it.
"How do you that? I made sure not to tell anyone" Sasuke exclaimed. Naruto just looked at him amused.
"Remember when we were drinking last year? I invited you for some drinks and for some weird miracle you got drunk first and spilled everything to me" Naruto explained. Sasuke's face palmed himself and couldn't even remember telling him it.
"Stop worrying about it," Naruto told him, "Rest for now, you'll need it tomorrow" he added before bringing his attention back to his phone. Sasuke noticed the sad tone in his voice but just let it go.
Sasuke did rest and tried not to worry about things. He had to make sure he had enough energy for tomorrow. After the trial, he'll go straight to Sakura. So Sasuke rested and slept throughout the day.
By nighttime, Sasuke managed to wake up and to his relief, he saw Sakura. He reached out his hands and Sakura took it. Sasuke was still feeling sleepy but he forced himself to be awake just so he could spend time with her.
"I'm still amazed how they let you visit outside visiting hours" he joked as he held her hand. Sakura just smiled at him and squeezed his hand.
"I'm the doctor here, remember" she responded, "Besides, you're my favorite patient so I have to make sure you are well cared" she continued. Sasuke laughed and just felt her presence.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" Sasuke asked. He was now fighting so hard with his sleep. He didn't want to close his eyes, he wanted to spend time with Sakura but his eyelids were getting heavier by the second.
"I'll see you tomorrow, my love," Sakura said before kissing Sasuke's lips and the last thing that Sasuke felt was wetness in his face.
Sasuke was now dressed in his black suit. He still had bruises, but it was slowly healing. His thing was, now packed and he was just waiting for the hospital to give the go signal. Naruto was with him, also wearing a black suit.
"I can't believe the trial went on until today," Sasuke said as he rubbed his hands. Naruto just stayed silent. As soon as Shizune came in and nodded her head, Sasuke was out of the room. He walked fast to the exit and as soon as he saw the car and the driver his father left for him, he immediately entered. Naruto followed suit and they were on their way.
Sasuke's heart was beating fast, and it felt like something was constricting his throat. The car ride felt slow and painful for Sasuke. He knows that the trial has already started and if they arrived later than it was probably by the time they arrived, it would be over. To his luck, they got stuck on a red light. Sasuke looked outside and noticed cherry blossoms starting to blossom.
"They're blooming early this year…" Sasuke said to himself. Then the light turned green, and the car started moving again but Sasuke couldn't take his eye off the trees.
As soon as they arrived Sasuke head outside without a minute to spare. He looked around and looked for the room where the trial was being held. He quickly found it and ran. He stopped in front, there was it again, the sinking feeling inside of him. Sasuke's feet started to freeze, and he felt dizzy. His breathing became labored, and he didn't know what to do.
"Sasuke"
Naruto called out to him and snapped Sasuke out of his trance. Naruto's hand was on his shoulder. He looked at Naruto and he just nodded at him. Sasuke's hand reached for the door.
"GUILTY"
As soon as Sasuke opened the door the verdict was given. The man was being escorted by police officers. They passed by Sasuke, and Sasuke never felt this intense feeling of wanting to kill someone. Naruto held his shoulder to stop him from assaulting the man. Sasuke noticed how Naruto's hand trembled and witnessed that even Naruto was stopping himself from beating up the man.
Sasuke was about to walk towards Minato and his father when he saw Sakura outside. He instantly ran towards her. Sakura was walking ahead of him and no matter how fast he runs he couldn't catch up to her.
He was not outside the courthouse and there was a little garden outside that had a cherry blossom tree in the center. The tree was in full bloom and Sakura stood under it. Sasuke ran towards her and hugged her tightly.
"I feel like if I let you go, you'll disappear," Sasuke said while holding Sakura near to him.
"Sasuke" Sakura called out to him. She gently untangled herself from Sasuke's hold and cupped his face.
"The man got in jail, Sakura. We won" he said smiling at her. Sakura smiled sadly and tiptoed to kiss his lips. Sasuke was about to kiss back but Sakura pulled away. There were tears in her eyes and Sasuke wiped them.
"Remember our promise?" Sakura asked. Sasuke nodded and just stared at her. Her green eyes still shone like crystals but now were wet with tears.
"Sasuke, you have to let me go now," Sakura said and flashes of memory started to appear on Sasuke's mind.
"It wasn't your fault, ok?' Sakura was now sobbing, and she was slowly disappearing from Sasuke's eyes. "I love you, very, very much," Sakura said, and more memories started to come back.
"It's time to let go," she said then Sasuke remembered everything.
"He remembered he was able to grab Sakura's hand, but it was too late. He remembered how the car slammed into Sakura's body. He remembered how he got dragged and thrown out. He remembered letting go of Sakura's hands once more. He remembered her bloodied body. He remembered trying to reach her. He remembered the ambulance sirens blaring. He remembers how the paramedics tried to revive Sakura. He remembered how they covered her body with a white cloth.
Sasuke remembers yelling her name as they drove them away from her

Sasuke couldn't help but drop down on his knees and scream how much pain he was in. He couldn't stop his tears from falling. Sasuke wasn't in a garden, he was on barren land with a dead tree. Sasuke just kept crying and punched the ground below him.
"I shouldn't have let go of her hand" he cried and kept his head below. A hand touched his back, and he couldn't help but lean on him. Naruto kept his composure and tried not to cry but soon failed.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Sasuke asked as he was controlling his tears.
"I'm sorry" was the only thing Naruto was able to say as he comforted his best friend.
Fugaku, Mikoto, and Itachi all were standing beside their car waiting for Sasuke. Then Sasuke appeared together with Naruto, eyes red and tears were still fresh from their face.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Sasuke asked.
"Because we wanted to protect you" Itachi spoke and Sasuke looked at him, eyes full of anger and sorrow.
"How the hell was that protecting me?! You didn't protect me, you made me look like a fool! I was at my hospital bed, thinking everything was going to be the same, that by the time I get out of that hellspace Sakura will be there waiting for me!" he cried and almost punched Itachi but his punch didn't land anywhere.
"You didn't remember, the doctors said it was because of the trauma. We didn't want you to know cause if you did, you wouldn't want to live anymore" Itachi explained. He was trying his best not to cry.
"Sasuke" Fugaku called to him and to his surprised his father hugged him. Sasuke couldn't stop his tears from falling.
"We're sorry for hiding it from you but that was the best we could come up to protect you," Fugaku said to him.
Sasuke struggled to get free from his father's hold. He didn't want there comfort. They were liars, they were monsters. Sasuke felt betrayed and that the word has fallen on him. He pushed himself out of his father's hug and aggressively dried his tears with his sleeves.
"I don't need your protecting and I don't need you" he coldly said to his family, "Come on, Naruto" Sasuke continued. Naruto was about to stop Sasuke but Mikoto looked at him and urged Naruto to follow Sasuke.
Sasuke walked towards a grave he didn't expect to see so soon. He sat down and touched the engraved letters of her name. Sasuke tried to stop himself from crying. He didn't want her seeing him like this.
"Sakura" he called her name. Sasuke's shakily grabbed something from his pocket. It was the ring he was going to use to propose to her. He pulled out the ring and kneeled on one knee looking at her grave.
"Sakura Haruno, will you marry me?" he asked and dropped on his knees again.
"I don't think I'll be able to keep my promise" Sasuke whispered at his dead lover's grave.
Sasuke was alone and the sun was hidden behind the clouds, on normal days Sasuke Uchiha would have appreciated this but not today. Normally, you wouldn't see Sasuke Uchiha kneeling on both knees, with a ring in hand, and a grave in front but this would soon become a picture Sasuke will paint for the rest of his days.
