Throughout her adult life, she had questioned her decision to leave everything and everyone behind. Now, ten years later, she is forced by fate to face those who once were family to her, especially him.
Ten years ago
She was sorting through her books to check those she'd take with her and those that'd go to storage. She had already done the same with her clothes and other stuff - no use keeping a bedroom full of her things if she intended never to come back.
She was so absorbed by the task she never heard the light knock, or notice the boy standing by the door, staring at her.
"I can't believe you're actually doing that"
Startled, she looked for the source of the voice, finding her long-term boyfriend, who looked as though had been crying.
"You know that's my dream, I can't miss this opportunity," she replied. He knew she'd always dreamed of studying Ancient Languages in Oxford, and now the chance was here, she could not miss it. "Besides, you are also moving away to go to college."
"Sure, to NY, not across the damn ocean."
They had had that argument before. Actually, it was the only reason they'd ever argued. She was sad he couldn't understand her choice, but he was sad she was gladly throwing away their relationship, for she didn't believe it'd survive the distance.
"I still don't see why we have to break up. We can survive this. I'll never love anyone as I love you. Please, give us a chance," he wispered brokenly, with tears in his eyes.
"I wish I could believe that, but as you said yourself, I'll be across the ocean. I have no idea when I'll be able to come visit. It'll just get harder as time passes, you know that. It's better we live our own lives from now on, no strings. I don't want you to resent later."
She was trying to be strong, for both of them. She would not cry, though her heart was breaking. Because she knew that was for the best.
"You know I'd never..."
"Sorry, I gotta go now."
"Please."
"Good bye."
