Authors note - Hi everyone, I have adjusted some ages, so please roll with me if Paul's age doesn't match up with his age in the books :)

Prologue

4 Years Earlier

Paul huffed and threw his textbook on Colette's bedroom floor. He felt Colette sigh and he met her eyes as his head lay in her lap.

"I just don't see the point in this, I am never going to be good at biology Cole"

"You have to try Paul" Colette sighed, closing her own book "You can do whatever you want after graduation, but it would be smart to have good grades to fall back on"

Paul closed his eyes as Colette began to run her fingers through his hair.

"We're only 15 Cole, I have loads of time to study later. Right now I just want to enjoy my life, with my friends, with you. I'm better with my hands anyway" Paul grinned and sat up, but Colette refused to meet his eye and reopened her textbook.

"Okay what is going on! You've been like this for weeks now, anytime I mention us or the future you become distant and change ths subject"

Colette blinked "I don't know what you mean"

"Yes you do"

"No I don't"

"Yes you do, the other day at the beach when I mentioned the start of year dance you got all shifty and began talking about the life cycle of seaweed. It wasn't even seaweed on the beach it was an old shoelace. Give me a break Cole and just tell me what's wrong"

Colette's eyes began to fill with tears and she put her textbook down once more.

"I'm moving Paul"

"You're.. you're what"

"Moving"

"When? Where?"

"In a few weeks, before the school year starts. Mom got a job in Toronto and we're moving up there. I'm sorry I didn't say anything before now, I didn't know how to tell you"

Colette was crying now. Paul sat back, deflated. After a period of silence, apart from the odd sniff from Colette as she dried her tears, Paul fianlly spoke.

"Do you have to move? Can't you stay here with your grandparents? It's not like your mother is a joy to be around, you could stay here couldn't you? With your friends? With me?"

Colette shook her head "Don't you think I've tried Paul? I've begged, cried, screamed but she won't let me stay here. Gran and Grandad are crushed. She's getting what she always wanted since my dad died, a way out of La Push and a way to get away from her In Laws"

"Well maybe you haven't tried hard enough!" Paul exploded, jumping from Colettes bed "I mean for gods sake Cole, this is your home, and you're not even going to put up more of a fight? You always argue with her anyway so what's one more argument to add to the pile"

"I.."

"Or maybe you don't really want to stay here" Paul ranted "Maybe you've grown tired of me, of your friends, of your grandparents and maybe you just can't wait to leave!"

"That is completely untrue and unfair" Colette fumed, standing from her own position "and for you to suggest otherwise shows you don't really know me!"

"Oh forget this and forget you" Paul raged, grabbing his jacket from the back of Colettes door and storming out of her house. He heard Colette call his name but he didn't look back.

That was the last time Paul Lahote saw Colette Collingwood.

4 Years Later

"Dude please, I didn't bring my car and it's pretty much torrential rain out there. The store is like a five minute drive. What happened to helping a brother out?"

Paul groaned as Embry continued begging for a ride. He was too tired for this, he'd just come back from a ten hour patrol and had only a few hours available to catch up on some sleep before his actual day job started.

"Come on man, there's some chips and dip in it for you. I mean I shouldn't even have to bribe you, we're brothers -"

Paul held up his hand to cut Embry off "Will you please shut up if I take you"

"Oh man you're the best, my favourite brother, although don't tell Quil because he'd -"

Paul sighed as he followed Embry out of Sam's house, completely ignoring whatever he was saying. The rain came down fast, thundering against Paul's truck as he and Embry - who was still talking - made their way to the store.

Paul stood looking at the chips, wondering how much he could extort from Embry for this, when he turned and crashed into someone behind him.

Whatever they were holding fell to the floor and Paul bent down to help retrieve the items. As he did, he met the other persons eyes and felt his whole world shift. Flashes of his future danced across his mind and Paul recoiled slightly as the imprint overwhelmed him. A small gasp left the lips of the woman across from him

"Paul?"

As the shock wore off, Paul realised who's groceries he was actually holding.

Colette Colingwood.
