"The man who has everything" or so they call him, but truly deep down… he has nothing. Clark Kent is just a man finding his purpose in life.
Clark: Hey mom
Clark's mother gives him a hug as he stands outside her door.*
Martha: Oh Clark, it's been such a while.
Clark: It's only been two weeks mom haha
Martha: Well I miss you even when you're only gone for one day.
Clark: I missed you too, Ma.
People often see The Man of Steel soaring through the air and wish they could be him, and honestly, who wouldn't? Who wouldn't want to lift an entire building, run faster than a speeding train, be able to breathe in space, shoot lasers out of their eyes, the list goes on and on… but all Clark Kent wants is to live a normal life with a family, he'd give away all those amazing gifts just to live a life of peace with the ones he loves, but as long as he has these gifts, he knows he can't and must do the right thing and help others instead.
Clark and his mother sit on the table as they eat dinner*
Clark: Can you believe it's been 10 years since you made that suit for me?
Martha: Oh, time really does go by in a blink, doesn't it, dear? I always see you on the news, making the headlines, that must feel pretty cool
Clark: Actually, it doesn't, sure I like that people see me as a symbol of hope, but the moments in my life I truly enjoy the most are the moments like these, where I spent time with you and the other people I love.
Martha: Oh honey, come give your mother a hug
Clark's mom gives him a warm hug*
Martha: I love you too sweetie, but I think you should go now, you might be late for work.
Clark: Oh, oh right, see you soon again, Ma.
What makes Superman who he truly is? you may ask. Well, you are about to see.
As Clark walks to work, he spots a young girl named Michelle on the top of a building, getting ready to end it all.*
Michelle: I'm done with everything.
As Michelle prepares to jump off the building, someone calls out to her, and that someone is no other than Superman*
Superman: Hey
Michelle: Please… i know you're going to try and stop me, please just let me do this, i'm tired of suffering.
Superman: I know… I know life is hard sometimes.
Michelle: Do you? You have everything, everyone wishes they were you.
Superman: I'm not perfect by any means… sure I have gifts, but I suffer, I feel emotion, I go through difficult times just like anybody, I know what it feels like to feel like there's no hope left. I know how you feel right now. You feel lost, like nobody cares about you, but I care about you.
Michelle: Why do you even care, you can do anything you want with your powers, you could have billions, rule the world, nobody would be able to stop you, why help someone who doesn't matter, like me?
Superman: You do matter. Everyone matters. These powers I have don't make me better than anybody, at the end of the day it doesn't matter what kind've things I can do with my abilities, but the goodness in my heart, I believe that's my- no, I believe that's anyone's real super power. I'm just here to let you know that… Everything's going to be okay.
Tears start running down Michelle's eyes as she turns around and reaches her hero for a hug*
As you see, what truly makes Superman is his heart and compassion, and we all can be superman
Clark arrives to work at the Daily Planet.*
Lois: Hey Clark, you're late, Mr. White won't be happy
Clark: I was uh… a little preoccupied.
Perry White appears*
Perry: And with what might that have been Mr. Kent?
Clark: Oh, hey Mr. White… um, i was just uh… busy with-
Perry: Listen Kent, I don't care… you've been coming late these past few weeks way too often, you keep this up and you are fired!
Perry walks away*
Lois: You knew it was bound to catch up to you Clark.
Clark: Yeah…
No matter what, everytime Superman saves a life, it always results in a worse one for Clark Kent. Being Superman is not all it's hyped up to be.
Jimmy: Hey Clark, you saw what Superman did yesterday? All over the front pages
Jimmy hands clark a newspaper*
Jimmy: see, 'Superman punches unknown being from different species into outer space' man… this guy is nuts, i wish and dream i could be him, i bet he doesn't deal with all the dumb everyday problems us regular people go through.
Clark: I'm sure underneath it all, Superman is just a regular person like the rest of us, Jimmy.
Jimmy: Regular? You call knocking dudes into outer space regular? Ha. you got jokes CK.
He was right, underneath it all, Superman… is just a man. Nothing more. A man who struggles with issues like we all do. You see, they'd always report his amazing feats of strength on the papers everyday, but never his amazing feats of compassion like he did earlier that day.
We go to later that evening, and see a young boy, a boy who loves Superman, who looks up to The Man Of Steel, his name is John.*
John: I know someday… we'll meet Superman.
John, everyday… he'd look out his window, hoping to get the attention of his hero. Well tonight, his wish is about to come into reality.
As John prepares to go to sleep, a voice calls out to him*
Superman: Hey, heard you'd hope we meet.
John looks in disbelief
John: Su- Super-
Superman: Hey, no need to be so in shock kiddo, i'm not some sort of GOD or anything, i'm just a normal person, like you
John: But… but you can knock bad guys into outer space, fly, you can stop a train with your bare hands, you can shoot lasers out your eyes, you're… you're so awesome!! I wish I could do everything you could… how does… how does it feel to not have to worry about everyday things like being late to catch the bus or your car running out of gas, or being late for work..
Superman: woah, slow it down a little, what's your name kiddo?
John: My.. My name is John.
Clark grows a big smile on his face*
Superman: John, you say?
John: Yeah, why?
Superman: oh nothing it's just… you have my father's name basically.
John: Wow…
Clark: My name is Clark by the way, but you promise not to tell anybody?
John: Oh my… of course, wow-
Clark: You see John… you can be like me.
John: Yeah, I wish.
Clark: no, you really can. You see, you don't need to run faster than any living thing on earth, or be able to punch bad guys into space, or… be able to fly, you get the picture. All you need and ever will need is a good heart, and help others when they're in need, even if it's just as simple as letting them know everything is going to be okay. That alone can beat any superpower I have. You can be a hero to John, you don't need all of my abilities, you already have something greater than that, in here.
Clark points to John's heart.*
John: So, I can be Superman as well?
Clark: Yes, you too can be Superman.
John gives Clark a hug*
People often seem to forget The Man of Steel goes through pain like any of us, we see him as this perfect GOD-like being, but we forget the man.
Later on that night, as Clark sits on his sofa, he spots an old picture of him and his father, he grabs it.*
Clark: Miss you, pa.
A tear begins to run down Clark's face*
The night before his father died, Clark got into a big argument with him. You see, no matter how many abilities he may have, they could never take away that guilt and pain inside him, everyday he wishes he could go back in time and erase that argument, but he can't. Superman… with all his extraordinary gifts, makes mistakes like the rest of us, nobody is perfect not even "The Man Who Has Everything"
We go to a flashback of Clark and his father*
Jonathan: How was school today, son?
Clark: I don't wanna talk about it, dad.
Clark storms into his room*
Martha: I should… probably go talk to him.
Jonathan: No Martha, it's ok. I'll go talk to him.
Jonathan makes his way to Clark's room
Jonathan: Clark…
He knocks on the door*
Clark (Crying): I- i don't… I don't wanna talk right now, please leave me alone dad.
Jonathan: Clark, I know those kids at school probably treat you badly, but you'll always be treated with kindness in this house, that I promise you.
Clark: Why can't I just… shut them up, teach them a lesson… you've seen everything I can do.
Jonathan: Clark, we both know that isn't the right thing to do. You're not like that.
Clark: I'm just… I'm sick of them toying around with me, knowing I could do something to them…
Jonathan: But you're not that kind've person Clark, we know that. Son, listen… I know life must be hard for you right now, you have a lot to deal with, but… no matter what, I will always be there for you, you're my son, and I love you. If you ever need to talk to someone, I'm always here Clark.
Clark opens the door and gives his father a hug while tears run down his face*
Jonathan: Everything's going to be ok kiddo, I promise you.
We go back to the present as Clark wipes tears from his eyes*
People often think Superman doesn't have emotions, but he has more heart and emotion than a lot of people, people like… Lex Luthor.
Lex Luthor's office at LexCorp*
Lex: I see him everyday, flying around this city, he could have it all. But he chooses to "Care" for others. How weak, you think I got to where I am right now by "Caring" for other people? Caring won't get you anywhere. I want him at my side… but he'll never have the guts to push people to the side if he had to. So now… it's time I go against him, I will show this city I'm better than him.
Mercy: What are you trying to say, Mr. Luthor?
Lex: Doomsday. We release him to the public, Superman will struggle against that creature, then that's when i come in, and take that beast down, then the public will see who the true hero is.
Mercy: How will you take down Doomsday?
Lex: Remember that suit I made? I think it's time we put it to good use.
End of Chapter 1*
