Writer's Note:
A fellow Spider-Man and Sonic fan online asked me to write a short story serving as a prequel to my Spider-Amy story, detailing Amy getting bit and gaining her powers.
So here we go, lets dive on into Spider-Amy land again.
Disclaimer; Spider Man and Amy Rose belong to Marvel and SEGA respectively...
It was a sunny springtime afternoon and sixteen-year-old Amy Rose was enjoying the peace as she sat in a school bus with her boyfriend Sonic the Hedgehog. They and their fellow high school students were on a field trip together and it involved science as the students of Mobius Valley School were going to the Mobo-Science Hall downtown.
Both Amy and Sonic had been great science study partners in science class as much as they'd been at the top of almost every class in their school, as a matter of fact, science was pretty much their number one favorite school subject next to history and math. As long as they knew their science, everything was just fine.
"Mobo-Science Hall..." The bus driver announced, "Have fun, kids." The bus stopped next to the large building that was the famed science hall. People were walking in to take tours or going to work in there while people walked out to get fresh air or go home. The bus doors opened and the students filed out with Sonic and Amy following suit.
"How are ya feelin', Ames?" Sonic asked casually, he was wearing his best school uniform.
"Perfectly comfortable." Amy replied, she was wearing her trademark red-white sundress.
"Way past cool. Besides, it's science time and we gotta focus."
Both hedgehogs followed their class partners inside the museum where the tour guide, a monkey man in a science coat, was there to greet them. "My name is Doctor Chimp." He said in a wizened voice, "And I am your guide, thank you for coming to the Mobo-Science Hall. We have so much to show you in the lab, but watch your step."
"I thought the lab was safe for the tour." A fox asked.
"What's your name, lad?" Doctor Chimp asked, noticing the fox.
"Tim, Tim Furfluff."
"Can you repeat what you said, Tim?"
"I said, 'I thought the lab was safe for the tour'."
"The lab is safe, it's just that we're working and we have machinery online. We don't want any accidents or lab explosions. Now follow me please."
Everyone followed Doctor Chimp through the entrance hall and into a large room, seeing many scientists at work, operating machinery as lights flashed and shadows seemed to dance along the walls. Amy noticed a green-eyed hamster running in a wheel, generating an electrical generator that provided light and power to the entire lab.
Nearby chirping sounds caught Amy and Sonic's attention and they saw a pack of birds sitting in a cage, fluttering around and tweeting to each other while their fur color rapidly changed from blue to white and to grey. It was clear that the scientists were conducting experiments on living animals without badly hurting them, how very nice...
Up above on the ceiling, a black spider had formed a web and was observing the activity from the scientists and the visiting high-school students. This was no ordinary spider, it was a radiated spider. As it observed the people in the room, the bug's eyes fixed on the sundress-clad pink hedgehog with the blue hedgehog.
"As you can see," Doctor Chimp said as he showed the students some glass containers that contained various creatures and bugs that seemed to have been genetically experimented on by the scientists, "We have experimented on genetically enhancing or creating various creatures of different species from reptiles to bugs and insects."
"Reptiles like that brown lizard that looks like some kind of mini-dragon?" Mina Mongoose asked. She was observing a brown scaly lizard in a glass container as it stuck it's tongue out to catch a fly.
"Yes, Ms. Mongoose." Doctor Chimp chuckled, "That's the Byl-Lizard, very ferocious."
"What about that big spider gnashing its teeth at me?" Barry the Koala inquired nervously as he looked at a container that held a large spider-y creature with six eyes as it snarled in a ferocious manner while bearing its sharp teeth at Barry.
"I believe you're talking about the Razor Spider; it was a normal black widow until we mixed it with a tarantula during an experiment. We make sure it's contained so our friend doesn't break out and start biting off heads. We have a lot of different bugs here."
"Hey, Ames." Sonic whispered, "There's an empty container, I think a spider was in it."
"What?" Amy asked. The blue hedgehog pointed to the glass container next to the Byl Lizard's container. Sure enough, while it had spider-webs in it, the container was empty. But little did Sonic and his girlfriend know that the creature that had been inside was right above them and was slowly descending towards Amy.
"Don't worry." The pink hedgehog whispered, "It's probably just hiding somewhere, the spider will turn up eventually. A lot of missing people and things always turn up, I once put a pencil in a drawer instead of a pencil holder and thought I lost it until I looked in the drawer and found it. Then again, maybe you worry too much."
"Let's worry about that detail later, Amy. We're gonna miss the rest of the tour."
Both hedgehogs became silent and followed their fellow students as Doctor Chimp continued showing the group the various other mutated or enhanced creatures and bugs in their holding containers. However, it did not stop the nearby spider that had its eyes on Amy. It got lower and lower, then it swung from its web-line and landed on Amy's back.
Feeling the spider make its landing made a chill go up Amy's spine. At first, she thought someone had probed her and hunched with a shiver until deciding that it was just her mind attempting to play some kind of joke on her. Amy needed to relax; she was on a field trip. Even school was important, this field trip was a part of her education.
Very slowly, the spider crawled up the unsuspecting pink hedgehog's shoulder and towards her arm with Amy not even paying attention to it as she, Sonic and the other students followed Doctor Chimp. Not even stopping as its body coursed with energizing radioactivity, the spider crawled along Amy's arm towards her wrist.
'Why am I feeling goosebumps and fleas?' The pink hedgehog frowned, thinking that a flea was attacking her. The spider inched closer and closer, nearing her hand. Only then did Amy look at her arm to see what was going on. But by then, it was too late to see it coming. The spider's jaws clicked and the arachnid sunk its fangs into Amy's wrist.
As its fangs sank in, the radiated venom that was inside the spider began coursing through the pink hedgehog's veins and infiltrated her bloodstream, slowly initiating a rewrite of Amy's DNA without even changing her physically. "Ow..." Amy groaned softly, gritting her teeth while sweat beaded her forehead.
The spider leaped off the pink hedgehog's arm and scurried away into a container behind a spider web where it would cease to exist as the remnants of radiation would affect the mind and heart. The spider rolled onto its back, its eyes spinning while its legs curled up. But today, its legacy would live on and never be forgotten.
"You ok, Amy?" Sonic asked with concern, he heard his girlfriend groan in agony. Hopefully, in his eyes, she hadn't stubbed her toe or suddenly gotten a headache. If Amy was having a headache, perhaps she was doing too much stuff and just needed to relax.
Amy wiped some sweat off her forehead. "I-I'm fine, Sonic." She said with uncertainty, "A spider just bit me, that's all. I-I just need to lay down and rest after the tour." The blue hedgehog took Amy's hand and comforted her as they participated in the rest of the tour while Sonic tried to help Amy remain focused instead of worrying about the spider bite...
-Later-
That night, after returning home from her school field-trip and after eating dinner, Amy headed up to her bedroom. She was feeling more feverish by the second, if she didn't take it easy, the pink hedgehog would probably come down with a nasty bug in a day or so. No, she would be ok. All she had to do was rest and ride out her spider bite-induced fever.
A slightly disoriented Amy changed out of her clothes and took a warm shower to wash up, the teenage hedgehog rinsed herself and let the water massage her body for a while before turning off the shower. Then she dried herself off and put on a new pink dress, Amy grabbed a cloth and put it on her throbbing and sweating forehead.
Feeling more tired by the second, she lay down upon her warm bed and pulled back the covers. Amy closed her eyes and settled in for the night. In a matter of seconds, the young hedgehog was asleep. Within her veins, her blood seemed to adjust to the presence of the spider venom while her Mobian DNA strands shifted to make room for spider DNA.
While she slept, Amy dreamed that she was on a spider-web somewhere unknown. She could move, but the web felt wobbly. The unsure female hedgehog looked up and saw a spider coming down, a spider with hedgehog-like quills. The spider approached Amy, its legs moving slowly while the creature clicked its pinchers.
'It's your destiny, Amy Rose.' A voice said, 'Embrace it, you are different from what you used to be. Your life is changing, accept your calling now.' The voice sounded comforting and Amy could feel confidence swelling within her, she took a step forward and held out her hand to take the spider. The bug looked big, big enough to hold without squishing it.
Gleaming stars appeared in the sky, twinkling with beauty. A light broke through the darkness and enveloped the world, surrounding Amy while the web seemed to vanish beneath her feet. She clung to the spider, hoping not to fall. Then the arachnid disappeared in a poof, leaving Amy with her hand held out while she blinked with confusion...
-The next morning-
Amy awoke in her bed and sat up, holding the covers over herself. She looked outside her bedroom window, it was morning and she could feel much better now. However, one look at her arm made Amy raise an eyebrow, had she gotten leaner or muscular? She climbed out of bed and looked at herself in the mirror, Amy looked... just fine.
Feeling suspicious and hoping this wasn't a dream within a dream, Amy removed her dress and stood in front of the mirror, wearing nothing other than a pink bra and white panties. The pink teenager struck a few poses in front of her reflection and turned her back to the mirror before placing a hand on her hip, this was remarkable.
'I feel like I've been given a make-over.' Amy thought, she put on a pink tank top and crimson shorts, followed by fluffy socks and black boots. Then the pink hedgehog donned her gold wrist bracelets, but just before she could put on her white gloves, Amy realized that her fingers felt a bit prickly and looked at her fingers to see tiny barbs emerging.
Then, she looked at her wrist and saw a white spot on it. How peculiar? Finally, Amy looked at her bed under the covers and gasped quietly when she saw a spider web under the sheet. She took a look at her wrist, confused and shocked. 'What the chili?' Amy thought.
Deciding not to think too much, the pink hedgehog put her gloves on and headed downstairs to get breakfast. She sat down at the table and ate her soft-served ice cream and eggs while drinking plenty of milk to wash down the meal. Once breakfast had been eaten, Amy cleaned up and headed outside to get some fresh air.
Luckily for Amy, it was a Saturday and there wasn't any school this weekend. Since she didn't have to worry about catching a bus or being late today, the pink hedgehog had all weekend to relax while processing her own changes. Amy sat down on the nearby bench and looked up at the sky, thinking hard about what last night's dream meant.
ZOOM! "Hey, Ames."
Amy looked up, Sonic had just arrived in the vicinity, sporting sunglasses and blue jeans that matched his fur color. "Oh, good morning, Sonic." The pink hedgehog greeted with optimism, "And how've you been?"
"Way past cool." Sonic remarked, "I had this dream last night and it was about us. Can you tell me what your dream from last night was about?"
"Spiders, that's all I dreamed of. I guess that's what you get when you have a spider bite induced fever after a field-trip where you got bit."
"Nice to see you're feelin' better. So, since we don't have any school today except for maybe some homework, how about we hang out together?"
"Do you mean something like going out on a date?"
"Sure, why not. C'mon, Amy. Are ya up for a hang out?"
"Well, I don't see why not."
"Ah yeah, this is happenin'. Thanks, Ames."
Amy got up off the bench and approached Sonic. She kissed the speedy hedgehog teen on the cheek and put her arms around him while he swept the pink hedgehog off her feet into his arms, princess style. Then Sonic dashed off at light speed across the street, leaving the neighborhood behind for now while he and Amy went off on their little date.
'Ok, Amy girl. Take it easy.' The slightly nervous pink hedgehog told herself mentally, 'Just don't let Sonic find out that you probably have spider powers somehow. Don't tell him about the spider web under your sheet or the barbs coming out of your fingers.'
Sonic carried the lovely female hedgehog through the suburbs and through the town streets, passing by cars and avoiding traffic lights. No hidden cameras turned on and caught the hedgehog racing around town with his girlfriend in his arms. Sonic took a right on Graff Street and stopped in Pachacamac Park, one of his and Amy's favorite places in the city.
"We came here for a picnic last month." Amy said as Sonic put her down, she couldn't resist taking in the view as a very happy memory flooded her mind, the memory of when she and Sonic had a picnic date in this park. While the memory felt like a recent one, at least it was still a memory that Amy felt very fond of.
Holding the pink hedgehog's hand gently, Sonic led Amy over to a bench and they sat down together, watching Flickies nest together in freedom in the tree branches above while various humans and Mobians talked, played and had picnics together. Bushes rustled and a couple Rickys came out, chattering in animal speak while eating an acorn.
"Seeing nature never gets old, huh?" Sonic quipped happily. A white bird landed on his shoulder and tweeted something to him, the blue hedgehog scratched its chin and gave the bird a warm hug. Amy smiled and a blue Flicky, a pink Flicky and a cream-colored Flicky fluttered up to her, it seemed she and her boyfriend had a special connection to birds.
The Flickies chirped, saying something to Amy and her boyfriend. They'd met before and both hedgehogs were good friends with the birds. When it came to Mobians and regular animals, they were fondly connected since anthropomorphic animals had evolved from regular animals just as humans had evolved from monkeys.
Amy felt her hand touching the bench, then she felt Sonic's hand and turned to look into his eyes while the birds perched behind both hedgehogs. Nobody minded the presence of the two lovehogs. With nothing to disrupt this romantic scene, Amy and Sonic leaned in for another one of their romantic kisses. Everything felt so perfect, but then...
Her eyes widened, the furs on her neck perked up and a new side of her mind awakened. Amy could sense it; she could hear someone in danger. A window shattered, somebody laughed demonically. Without wasting a heartbeat, the pink hedgehog shot to her feet and Sonic looked at her with confusion. "Ames, what's goin' on?" He asked.
"I... I just realized I forgot something and I have to take care of it." Amy replied, she couldn't tell her boyfriend the full story. Energy was rushing through her legs and her arms, the pink hedgehog had to protect somebody. Amy dashed off across the park towards a building while Sonic watched, wondering why his girlfriend was acting so strangely.
Nobody observed as Amy dashed towards the side of a general store, she couldn't believe what was going on. But at this point, it was clear the spider bite was changing Amy. She reached the building nearby and went around to the side of it, Amy put her hands on the wall and started climbing up, her feet left the ground and she was now a spider.
'A spider hedgehog.' Amy thought with surprise, maybe she could be a superhero. Perhaps she could fight bad guys as a hero. She could wear an outfit, a mask too. Amy could swing around on webs and flick webs from her wrists at bad guys. Today wasn't just any regular new day now, this was going to be... the dawn of the Spider-Hog Girl aka Spider Rose.
Amy climbed on top of the building and another idea came to her, she felt something on her back and reached into hammer-space. The pink hedgehog pulled out a rubber mask, pink with a web-like rose on it. Amy placed the mask on her head, it fit perfectly. But she would have to create her own outfit at some point, something less revealing of herself.
She heard the sound of someone in distress again while a villain laughed, her spider-y instincts went crazy and Amy ran across the rooftops. She leaped from building to building, filled with confidence and energy. The pink high-schooler couldn't believe where this was going, she never thought she had the potential to be a superhero. But she did, she really did.
WOOSH! Amy looked up and saw someone on a hoverboard fly off, someone in a green outfit and a mask. The hawk-looking guy laughed deviously, he was carrying a handbag and a struggling old monkey man. 'My first enemy.' Amy thought, she looked at her wrist and flicked it. Sticky webbing flew out and hit the hoverboard's engines.
Instantly, the hoverboard shorted out and the hawk crashed onto a nearby roof, dropping the bag and the man right before he hit the ground. Amy raced over just in time, thankfully the monkey or the bag were safe and unharmed. As for the green guy, he rose to his feet and glared at Amy with his creepy hawk eyes.
"You got a lot of guts, missy." The villain growled, "Especially if you're gonna fall the Green Hawkblin while he's pulling off a dastardly act of villainy."
Amy crossed her arms in a heroic pose. "Well, maybe you should treat your elders with respect before you try to abduct a guy while stealing his belongings, Green Hawkblin." The pink hedgehog said in a street girl accent, her best attempt at a superhero voice, "In fact, maybe you should start rethinking your life before webs start flying."
Green Hawkblin drew a knife, "NEVER!" He charged at Amy and tried to slit her, the pink hedgehog ducked and kicked him in the knee, knocking Hawkblin off his feet. The knife fell from its wielder's hand and slid across the roof before vanishing somewhere inside an air duct. Amy flicked her wrist and shot webs in Hawkblin's face, blinding him.
"AHH! My eyes!" Green Hawkblin cried, "I'm blind!" He tore off the webbing and lunged for the pink hedgehog, hands out like claws as he sought to strangle her. Amy grabbed his wrists and held back the Hawkblin before tossing him over the roof onto another roof. "Thank you, miss." The old monkey said as he reclaimed his bag, "Thank you so much."
Amy instructed the monkey to get to safety and pointed to a ladder that led down from the roof. As the monkey nodded and got to the ladder, Amy pursued Green Hawkblin, who pulled out another glider from thin air. The villain laughed again, he sounded deranged and seemed to have no sense of reality at all. How did he come to be like this anyway?
"If you think you can thwart my villainy, you got another thing coming, hedgehog!" Hawkblin declared evilly, he pressed a button and an orb popped out of the glider. The villain picked up the orb, which turned out to be a bomb, and chucked it at Amy. She flicked a web from her wrist and caught the Hawkblin Bomb before swinging it back at Hawkblin.
KA-POOF! The bomb exploded like a flash grenade and Hawkblin dropped his glider, he stumbled around and tripped over his own fallen glider. FWIP-FWIP-FWIP! Amy flicked her wrists and pinned Hawkblin to the ground with enough web to keep him there for a while. "NO! Curse you, spider-slinger!" The hawk shouted angrily, "I'll get my vengeance!"
Helicopter engines from nearby attracted Amy's attention and she looked up to see a police chopper coming. 'And that's my cue to leave and find Sonic.' The pink hedgehog thought. She ran to the edge of a building and jumped before shooting out a web and swung away to places unknown so she could take off her mask in secret and put on a headband.
Meanwhile, Sonic was still at the park and sitting on a bench as he fed a bird some bread while listening to music on his I-Pod. As far as he was concerned, Amy was just taking care of something she hadn't done earlier and was doing so. Sonic wasn't worried about the pink hedgehog; he knew that she could take care of herself if something came up.
"Sorry about that, I had to get my special headband."
With his heart fluttering happily, Sonic looked up and saw Amy walking towards him. She was sporting a pink headband on her head with a feather on it. One of the Flickies chirped and flew over to Amy and started sniffing the bird-like feather on her headband. "Y'know, Ames, you almost had me concerned." Sonic quipped, "Are you sure you're ok?"
'Thank goodness he didn't figure it out.' Amy thought, 'Let's keep it that way for now, we'll talk about Spider Hog Girl later.' The pink hedgehog shook her head and held Sonic's hand with a smile. "I'm fine, Sonic." She replied, "It's just that I had to get my special hairband, I didn't mean to worry my boyfriend. Also, I... I love you, Sonic the Hedgehog."
"And I love you, Amy Rose." Sonic said as he put his arms around Amy. Both hedgehogs locked eyes again and they leaned in for a kiss with nothing to interfere this time. Sonic grasped Amy's hips and held her closer to him. Amy joined her boyfriend on the bench and the two started making out while the Flickies flew away to give the hedgehogs some space.
Sonic lay on his back and Amy lay atop him, French-kissing and enjoying one another's company. Amy licked Sonic on the cheek and he kissed her softly on the neck. 'After my first battle with a bad guy as a superhero, this is rewarding.' Amy thought, she and Sonic continued making out happily, all while Amy began to think about her superhero costume...
The End
