A Late Dinner….

Since we did not get to see the late dinner that Kim and Adam had, I decided to write my own! Amazing how Burzek can give us crumbs and we just melt!

"Speaking of time." Adam looked at his phone. "Mine is up. I got a late dinner with Kim."

"Aww, that explains the shirt then." Kev teased him.

Adam chuckled as he looked down at his shirt. "I'll see you later. Be safe."

Adam quickly headed to his jeep. Once he cranked it up he sent a quick text to Kim to let her know he was on the way. Kim replied almost immediately and it made Adam smile. She sent, "Can't wait!" And added a heart emoji.

Kim was doing better everyday and Adam wanted to think that he was helping her. She still struggled with some trauma, rightly so. She was working a crime scene the other day where the victim had two gun shot wounds to the abdomen. Kim just stared then quickly turned away and excused herself. Adam caught up to her and she jumped when he touched her arm and called her name.

"I'm sorry. I need to get a better grip. I don't want to let the team down."

Adam assured her that she wasn't. Voight, Platt, and Adam kept telling her that it was okay to still work through this. She was seeing the counselor for CPD and was actually enjoying the sessions. It was protocol for her to see one but she was planning on continuing even though she had been cleared for work. She still wrestled with the fact that she almost made MaKayla an orphan again.

But now, Adam could notice a change in her once she started seeing the counselor. He was thrilled when she asked him to eat dinner with her. Before, he was always asking. So he took this as a good sign that for once she was the one asking him. He had a bit of butterflies in his stomach and didn't know why. He had eaten a 1000 times with Kim. This one just seemed special.

She had told him she wanted it to be later than normal so MaKayla would already be in bed and it could be just the two of them.

Adam used his key to open the door announcing his entrance by calling out to Kim.

"I'll be right out!" She yelled back.

Adam stopped by the desk inside the front door and picked up the picture he had not noticed before. It was a picture of them taken probably six years ago. He was carrying her on his back and he had turned his face towards her as they kissed. It was the perfect day and it made his emotions soar to see she kept it and had it sitting out in her living room. Surely that was a good sign that she wanted him and more importantly a relationship with him again.

"Alright, sorry about that. Just finished putting MaKayla down and had to freshen up." Kim looked as beautiful as ever.

"Is she already asleep?" He asked as he looked towards her bedroom door. As much as he wanted Kim all to himself he missed MaKayla and had not seen her in a few days. He had been working late and crashing at his apartment so he didn't wake them up.

"Not yet. She's hoping you will come in to see her. She was not happy to be missing out on our dinner. I told her we would have family dinner tomorrow night."

Adam smiled and nodded as he walked to her door. He stopped right before opening it. "You know, I like what you just said."

"What was that?" Kim asked as she walked into her kitchen.

"Family dinner." He waited until she looked at him and then winked at her. He opened the bedroom door to see MaKayla cuddled up with her platypus and smiling the instant she saw him.

"Adam!" She shrieked!

"Hey Mak!" Adam went and sat down on the edge of her bed. "I've missed you. How was your day at school?"

MaKayla grabbed him around the neck as she started to speak. "It was great. I got to be the helper today and do all the errands in the class. I fed the goldfish and watered both plants!" Adam chuckled. "Well that was cool! Did you play outside?"

"Uh huh. I got to play with my friends. Kim is letting me have a play date with Brea next week!" She laid back down and yawned.

"Kim said we will go to the park and maybe to the skating rink. She said you would go too."

"Well of course I will!" Adam ruffled her hair and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "You need to go to sleep so you can get up early for school ok?"

"I'm tired. You can go eat with Kim. I don't mind." MaKayla yawned again then turned over in the bed hugging her platypus tightly.

"Nite MaKayla, I'll see you tomorrow." He turned off the lamp by her bed and quietly shut the door.

"She going to sleep?" Kim handed him a beer and then turned back to the stove and started dishing up their plates.

"Yeah. She is." He rubbed her back. "Mmm, smells good."

"New recipe I'm trying. It's chicken enchiladas." She handed him his plate as she grabbed hers.

"I was talking about you but yes, the food smells good to."

Kim blushed as they both sat down.

"So how's Kev. What project is he working on?"

Adam started eating. "Wants to buy some property in Burnside, turn it around and rent the building for affordable apartments. Seems awfully expensive and a lot it time." He shrugged. "Kev is just wanting to give back to a community he feels is neglected and under privileged."

"Sounds very noble. Just like our Kev. Is he going to pull the trigger? Buy the property?"

"Not sure. But he's contemplating it pretty hard."

Kim smiled. "Are you going to breath between bites or not?" She laughed.

"I'm starved! This is a late dinner for us. Besides, I'm ready to be done with dinner so I can snuggle on the couch with you."

Adam always had a way to flirt with her and she loved every minute of it.

"Do you want to watch a movie after supper? Play cards? Talk?" Kim asked.

"Neither of those are on my mind. But as long as I am with you I can wait for what I want."

"So…. I saw my counselor today." Kim paused as Adam raised his head.

"And. How was it?"

"It was good. I really like Dr. Ingram. She is kind and very direct."

"Direct about what?" Adam didn't want to push Kim but lately she kept wanting to share more about her sessions and he didn't want her to shut him out so he listened.

"Oh, you know… she was just giving me some advice on where she thinks my head is at and what I need to think about doing next." Adam stopped eating and stared at her, wiling her to continue.

"Dr. Ingram thinks that part of the reason I am having feelings of fear is not because of what happened to me. She thinks I am scared of losing something."

"MaKayla?" Adam cocked his head to the side.

"No, you. She thinks I am scared of losing you."

"Me? How are you losing me?"

"She says that I want a commitment but I'm not committing and that I need to completely close that circle to heal. So that's what I want to do. I don't want you to have your own place. I want you here with us every night. I don't want to be undefined. I want to be defined. I want you and I to be together, to be a family. A family that includes MaKayla."

Adam stood up and walked towards Kim.

"Oh darling, I want that to."

"Well then, Welcome Home!" She reached up and grabbed his cheeks and pulled him in for a kiss.

Home never sounded so good.
