Mid-March Jane is sitting on her sofa in her apartment drinking a beer and realizes that St. Patrick's Day is next week. She thinks to herself, oh my God my best friend is Irish I must do something to help her celebrate the day. Maura has never celebrated St. Patrick's Day because until recently she did not know that she was Irish. I mean sure she has worn green and gone out with Jane to celebrate but she was never celebrating as a person on Irish decent. Jane loves when she can share firsts with Maura. Their life experiences have been so different and Jane loves to see the smile on Maura's face when she does something for the first time, it is priceless. It makes Jane want to smile also. Maura is often unsure of what Jane has planned on any given day but she is a good sport and goes along with what she wants to do for the most part.
Jane breaks out her laptop to do a little research so she can plan the best first St. Patrick's Day for Maura. Normally when she needs to know something she would simply ask Maura but for this she must research it herself. She must use the computer version of Google instead of her own personal Google. She has just seven days to plan. The first thing she looks for is a "Kiss Me I'm Irish" button. She needs a magnetic one though as she knows that Maura would not be comfortable sticking a pin through her clothes. Once she has found that and purchases it she sets out to learn about the history of St. Patrick's Day so she can do a Googlemouth spiel for Maura. She wants to impress Maura and let her know that she can Googlemouth also. Jane thinks 'Oh this is going to be a fun experience for Maura. I am going to make sure of it.'
Jane spends the next three days researching in her spare time. She learns everything she can about St. Patrick's Day and the history of it in Boston. She purchases various green shamrocks and other related items and a little box to put the "Kiss Me I'm Irish" button in so she can present it to Maura
during morning coffee on St. Patrick's Day and maybe even snag the first kiss once Maura puts the button on if she is willing to play along and put the button on. Nervousness all of sudden takes over Jane's thoughts as she thinks of kissing Maura. She has dreamed of what it would be like to kiss Maura. She has recently discovered that she likes her best friend as more than a friend and it scares her a little, no a lot. Sure they have flirted for years but Jane never really thought anything about it until recently. She does not know what changed that made her feelings comes to the surface. She and Maura have been friends for years.
The morning of March 17th Jane wakes up early and figures she might as well get up and get ready. She makes sure she wears a green shirt. Actually, she purchased a green undershirt and a very nice green button up oxford shirt to wear. Afterall, she wanted the day to be special for Maura so she needed to step it up a little and dress nice. She arrived at Maura's for morning coffee thanking the powers to be that they did not get called to a murder earlier in the morning. That would have ruined her plans and it has happened plenty of times in the past. Morning coffee at Maura's is not a given when the murderers of Boston have other plans.
Jane arrived at Maura's a few minutes early and was surprised at how beautiful Maura looks when she saw her at the island preparing their coffee. Maura was wearing a stunning green dress which really brought out the green in her beautiful hazel eyes. Jane was speechless. Maura just smiled, she loves seeing Jane speechless. She just loves having that effect on her detective. Maura goes out of way to do things to pull out Jane's feelings. She is in love with her detective and always does little things to try and figure out if Jane has similar feelings hence the flirting and gentle touches that they have shared during their friendship.
Jane finally offers her morning greetings and hands Maura the box. Maura is a little shocked. She takes the box wondering what Jane is doing. Jane just simply instructs her to open it. Maura does and just smiles when she sees the button. She takes it out of the box and Jane asks if she would wear it today. Maura smiles and put is on over her heart and gives Jane a hug of thanks. When the embrace breaks Jane plants a small kiss on her cheek and Maura blushes a little. Jane just smiles with a slight blush displayed on her face as they grab their respective to go cups and head to the car.
When they arrive at the station and Maura removes her coat she is surprised when several uniformed officers place a quick kiss on her check and smile. Maura smiles back and looks to her button laughing a little realizing why she is being afforded kisses this morning. She looks over at Jane who just smiles back as they push the button on the elevator to go to their respective offices with tentative plans to meet for lunch if a case does not come in. Maura is backlogged in paperwork for several cases for other detectives and asks Jane if they can eat lunch in her office and Jane agreed and went to pick up lunch for them at the local deli that they both like.
Jane informs Maura that she has made dinner plans for them so as long as they do not have a new case they should be okay for dinner at 5 PM. Jane wants to eat early and beat the rush that is expected later in the evening. Jane has arranged with the Dirty Robber to ensure that they are not sold out of their special corned beef and cabbage dinner that they are preparing for that night. Jane knows that Maura does not eat red meat that often but she hopes that Maura will be willing to try the meal as it is a tradition for the day.
They arrive at the Dirty Robber promptly at 5 PM and are able to sit at their usual table. Sometimes their table is taken but tonight things are going right for a change and Jane in pleased. Aside from lunch Jane has not had the opportunity to see Maura much as she and her team were working a cold case with some promising new leads. Maura agreed to try the corned beef and cabbage dinner and even went along with having a green beer. Jane was all smiles.
During dinner Jane wowed Maura with her five-minute googlemouth talk about the history of St. Patrick's Day and when the traditions started in Boston. Maura was very impressed she has always known that Jane was intelligent, more then Jane would want anyone to believe, but she was happy that Jane did this for her to celebrate her first St. Patrick's Day as an Irish woman. Maura had always wondered what nationality she was and after discovering that Paddy Doyle was her birth father that answered that, well part of it anyways. She still did not know what nationality her birth mother was. She figured in time she would learn the truth about her birth mother and hopefully that will give her the answers to all the questions she has had since learning she was adopted.
At lunch Maura asked Jane if they could have a movie night after dinner and Jane thought that would be great. They arrived at Maura's around 7 PM and Jane pulled out a bottle of Irish Whiskey that she had placed at Maura's earlier in the week. They both had a shot of whiskey before settling in for the movie. Jane was surprised to learn that Maura had chosen an animated film about magical fairies in Ireland to watch. Maura never ceases to amaze her. She does not know if she is ever going to figure out this woman but she is willing to spend the rest of life trying.
After the movie Jane felt brave and she reached over and tapped Maura's button a few times and planted a big kiss right on Maura's lips. Maura responded back deepening the kiss. When they broke the kiss to breathe Jane told Maura she has been wanting to do that for quite some time. Maura smiled and reached over to her purse and pulled out a small bag and handed it to Jane. She told Jane to open it and Jane pulled out a "Kiss Me I'm Italian" button. Maura had ordered the button when she arrived in her office and had it delivered that afternoon. Jane put it on and Maura kissed her. The rest of the evening was spent complying with the depends of what the buttons say. Both women were flush and enjoying themselves. Maura decided right then that maybe they do not need to go to work tomorrow, maybe they could just continue to enjoy the company of one another. Jane agreed. Afterall it is not like they were saving lives they were solving murders and murder could wait another day.
