Elizabeth Thornton had yet to get used to the idea of having a new mountie around town, even if it was temporarily. the Constable, Gabriel Kinslow, was posted at Brookfield, the home for the orphanage run by Elizabeth's two friends, Lillian and Grace. It wasn't the new Mountie that bothered her, it was the fact that Nathan had left town without saying goodbye. What had happened between them, she wondered. They had used to be close, confided in each other. Now it seemed like he was pushing her away. She was waiting at the gazebo, today was the day that Nathan was supposed to return and she was determined that she was going to get her answers. Then she saw him, turning a corner into the main square. She stood up from her seat and ran to meet him.

"Nathan, Nathan Grant".

"Well, finally talking to me now"?

"What are you talking about? you're the one who's been ignoring me "?

"You mean you don't like being ignored"?

"Oh I see...is this your childish idea of recompense"?

"Look, I've got business to take care of with Constable Kinslow, so if you don't mind"...

"I do mind, do you know how hard it was for me to find out you left town...two days after the fact. Did you for once think how it would affect me"?

"You? let me tell you something princess, the world doesn't revolve around you. This isn't about you. So get off your high horse and mingle with some of us common folk. Maybe it'll help you see things clearly".

With that, Nathan took off his campaign hat and left Elizabeth alone to think things over.
